Cabezon is a bustling neighborhood seafood bistro and fish market. Opened in December 2009,
Cabezon is located near both Portland’s Hollywood and Rose City Park neighborhoods. Offering
“Coastal Cuisine with Passion” – elemental seasonal cooking driven by the offerings of the day
from local producers and the bounty of the Pacific Northwest. Owners, Chef David Farrell and

"The complex and subtle dishes are well-explained by the knowledgeable, enthusiastic staff, so please let them guide you. We started with a smoked sturgeon appetizer, and it was incredible; like fish bacon, which is a compliment! There was quite a bit of fork and spoon passing so we could all taste everything. My cioppino was brightened by fennel, saffron and fresh dill. Delicious! So was everything else on our table. The cocktails are fresh and as carefully prepared as the food. The profiteroles with bourbon ice cream, chocolate sauce and candied hazelnuts may be the best dessert I have ever had, anywhere. We enjoyed everything about our visit to Cabezon and will come again."

"Cabezon is one of our favorite restaurants. They have some of the best fish anywhere. They keep their prices reasonable. It's not fancy, that's for sure, but it's casual, pleasant and all about the food. They treat the fish with respect -- not overdoing it but great accompaniments. Excellent meat dishes as well -- our friends tell us, but we've only eaten the fish. I love the basil wrapped shrimp. Excellent desserts as well. And they are flexible with their cooking so my husband can enjoy their food without or with very very little salt. That's something that is difficult at a lot of Portland restaurants that seem to think you are insulting the chef if you ask for food without salt."

"We're a little ambivalent right now. Our first experience was on a weekend, with the owner/chef in charge of the kitchen. The restaurant was very busy, but our food and server were both amazing. After raving about it to our friends we took another couple back on a week night. Neither the food nor the service were as good on our second visit."

"People rave about the Cioppino with good reason. Really a new favorite. Just wish wait staff didn't always push chardonnay on the ladies. Other wine choices there were much better pairing. The old white wine with fish adage is not valid when the stew is tomato-based and spicy. Cote du Rhone really complemented the stew."

"First the good, the food was wonderful, I had the Pan Roasted Striped Bass, and it the quality was top notch, and you'll pay for that at $26 and the portion was on the small size. My wife had the Cioppino and found it to compare to that of what you would get in San Francisco at a tad bit cheaper and the portion was adequate enough for her to share.
Now, the not so good, this is a tough place to find and doesn't stand out as a restaurant, I had to drive around the block several times, and there is little to no parking as it borders Sandy Blvd and a residential area that has tons of "no parking" everywhere you looked.
And lastly, the restaurant is small, with bench/chair seating, no booths or any privacy to speak of."

"This was our first visit and was disappointed in that we chose the restaurant because of its claim as a fish market. My husband does not eat meat and there was nothing on the menu that did not include some form of meat. They did modify a dish for him that turned out to be just mediocre. I had the ciopinni and it also was just fair. There was no ambiance ... appeared to be more like a neighborhood diner than an upscale restaurant. Way overpriced!"

"From my review on TripAdvisorThe papardelle with ragu hits the spot. When I wasn't sneaking a bite off of the others' dishes, I was contending with a very enjoyable filo, feta and spinach tart with a serving of nicely prepared cod. The servings were deceiving, appearing to be too little at first and promising to be exactly the right portion for each in our party. The dining room was warm (a luxury in Portland during the winter months) and the service was very cordial and prompt. Wine pairings complemented each of our entrees perfectly. We were very pleased with this selection and will return. Also, the chef checked on us, which I really appreciated. He's a cool guy."

"The staff was wonderful to me. I was dining alone for my birthday and the staff made my experience a very pleasant one. They took care of me as if I were a group of 15. Nice, attentive and they even brought over a fabulous little Creme Brulee with a candle for me. Nice folks!

"Awesome Cioppino. Just the right balance of spice and the seafood was incredibly fresh. My wife had the steak which was perfectly cooked and well seasoned. Great atmosphere and extremely friendly staff. We can't wait to return."

"Small portions and not that great for the price. Soup was best thing we had. Mussels were good, seafood sparse in the Cioppino and salmon barely visible for $24! We had an $11 glass of wine and if it was a 3 oz pour I would be surprised. Service was not good. Overall Disappointing."

"Food was pretty good. Their main focus is seafood. The service was casual. I do like their ambiance, small, intimate restaurant. Even though I made a reservation, we ended up waiting 45 mins which to me seems kind of excessive. If they had comped me a drink, maybe I would be a happier."

"We loved it. Went for a birthday dinner. It was because of the size and one large group rather noisey but not so much that we could not have a converstation. Food and service was excellent and the price was right. We will go back."

"For years, bluehour and Couvron (now defunct, but the chef is thankfully back in town with Noisette) were my unflinching favorites. Now, officially Cabezon is my favorite restaurant for any occasion, bar none. Chef David, his gorgeous wife Jackie, and our favorite server Jill have created such a warm, yummy experience. I have never once had a bad dish - not even one that was just "okay". It might be kismet on our part, but even our 7 year old daughter loves the oysters, mussels, lamb, and cioppino. Very romantic Valentine's Day dinner with my lovely husband the night before the chaos of actual Valentine's Day!"

"We enjoyed our meal - loved the oysters. The service was a little slow and inattentive to drinks. However, the fish service more than makes up for the delay in meal service - definitely try the macaroni and cheese . Will be back for the food."

"After telling us that they were OUT of their duck leg dish but would substitute duck confit, I decided to order the duck confit. In ordering, I misspoke and said, "I'll take the duck leg" The server rudely corrected me: "You MEAN the duck CONFIT." So I said, "yes." Imagine my surprise, then, when the duck LEG was served to me! Not one dish had anyone saying, "Mmmmmm" in contentment. It was just OK.
We dined there two years ago, which I forgot until we pulled up to the restaurant. I had chosen it because my husband prefers shellfish and fish to anything else, but this place isn't the fish place one would expect. Neither the selection nor quality nor preparation makes it stand out."

"As always, the food at Cabezon was spectacular. In my opinion this is the best fish restaurant in Portland. I almost hate to say that, because it's hard enough to get a table there on a weekend, but they do deserve the praise. The freshest fish imaginable, lovingly prepared...who could ask for more?"

"First time visit - a very nice surprise - far surpassing my expectations. The food was truly superlative. The Hawaiian Malu with red cabbage and crispy fried oysters was the best seafood meal I have had in years and maybe ever. The flavors and textures were unbelievable. The beet and goat cheese tart (starter) was excellent. The Blue Squash soup was surprisingly light - the nutmeg and cinnamon spicing was a bit strong for me, but I think that was the point. The Belgian pot de crème dessert was 62,344 calories and worth every single one of them. The event was a dinner for two celebrating my mother's 75th birthday. The wait staff was patient, good-humored, and attentive. I will absolutely return and highly recommend Cabezon!"

"Our waitress was unaware of my request for birthday acknowledgement. When I told her she offered to bring our party of four a champagne toast. When we said, "no thanks", she comp'd us two desserts -- amazingly generous. We have always enjoyed Cabezón; but this service was wonderful!
