"We had a delicious dinner last Saturday night-as is always the case at Mon Ami Gabi. We had the hangar steak, steak frites with herb butter and the arctic char, all perfectly prepared. The frisee salad and the goat cheese salads were large and fresh and the profiteroles to end the meal were great-3 cream puffs with caramel, chocolate and vanilla ice cream fillings were the perfect ending to our meal."

"Bland Escargot.Sweet Boeuf Bourguignon, way too sweet. Missed the classical notes, of red wine, and Dijon mustard (although omitting it would be fine too),but it needed acidity. almost not eatable. Mousse au chocolat? someone needs to get back to basics.too soft, runny. egg whites where not either stiff enough, overdone, or keeping the finished mousse in the fridge killed it. pate: technically good, a bit weak in flavor. needs some oomph.the steak - likely choice meat quality, but not the best. change meat vendor? tasted quite ok, a bit tough. the fries interesting. so ok. summary: didn't hit the spot. for folks who know and/or lived in France. C'est non. For others, large groups, kid friendly, bistro with "diluted" french food,ok!"

"Excellent French bistro food, but the restaurant is way too small to accomodate the number of patrons it claims to handle. Our table for two was microscopic and cramped, and my ears were ringing from all the ambient noise after leaving.

The Las Vegas location in the Paris hotel/casino is much nicer than the Chicago restaurant."

"The most amazing girls night out! Our server was impeccable, he kept bringing us treats and making sure everyone was happy. We had lots of wine and our server was kind enough to bring the pregnant woman at the table a super fun 'mock-tail' with an umbrella!

"The food was fabulous and the waiter was attentive and knowledgeable. I ordered steak frites. The steak was cooked exactly how I wanted it to be, but the bourdelaise sauce may have been on the salty side. Someone else ordered the dijon sauce, and if I were to do it over again, I probably would have gone with that. The frites were thin and chip-like, but good. I would have preferred them fry-like. Porcini mushroom soup was not too creamy and quite mushroomy. Creme brulee was delicious! The chocolate mousse was also extremely good. The serving sizes were very generous and I left completely stuffed. Non-foodwise, my only comment is that the tables were a little too close together."

"I gave this five stars because not one of the four of us had an off dish AND everyone loved what they ate AND some of the items were stellar. Plus service was very attentive and the atmosphere was great . . . true French Bistro style where there are linens on the table, but patrons in casual clothes. I've been to many a bistro in France and loved that the wait staff here at MAG had to pull the table away from the long bench seat for us to be able to be seated . . . so authentic. The difference between this and a true French bistro is that the waiter came right away, lol. The potato leek soup was the best we'd had. The boeuf bourguignon was gorgeous and the noodles were absolutely perfect."

"We went to Mon Ami Gabi for a double date and because we heard the food was pretty good. That is an understatement. The Escargot was absolutely amazing. I had a friend who didnt want to touch it and after one bite he wanted more. The Scallops were fabulous and the steak frites and chicken my boyfriend had were amazing. David was a great server and the wine was delicious and the price was affordable. I would be happy to return very very soon as are my friends. Thanks David and Mon ami Gabi. The kitchen does a great job with food!"

"The food was very good. Service was good also. Had made reservations and we were seated as soon as we arrived! I was disappointed with the fact that no one new how to complete our check with some Visa gift cards (This dinner was a gift from our children). The manager came to our table and said "These cards are no good they are being declined." We were very embarassed as other partons could hear him. They also gave us a sample desert as we were first time customers and were told this is on the house. It was put on our bill and we were charged. Not sure if we will go back to this location."

"We love Mon Ami Gabi and go several times a year. It is romantic wihtout being too quiet, it's vibrant, without being loud...and well the food is delicious. "French bistro cuisine done well. Steak frites are very good choice but the pork tenderloin was less inspiring. Both appetisers were quite tasty. We had the mussels and the escargot.The wine (cotes du rhone) was a very good choice for the price and the restaurant's wine list includes a large selection of wines by the glass. The price here is not going to break the budget but still probably makes it a special occasion place. Valet parking is a must and is fairly expensive ($12)."

"I live right around the corner, and of all the restaurants to have around the corner I love that Mon Ami Gabi is the place! They have affordable French food that does not taste affordable. They have done a great job with every dish I have tried. Whenever I have visitors in town I bring them here because they are bound to enjoy whatever they order. The staff is extremely friendly. Keep an eye out for events that they put on here, they are always a great time!"

"As lively and energetic as it is intimate, Mon Ami Gabi managed to dazzle our taste-buds with delicious french cuisine all at reasonable prices. "The experience, when we finally got seated, was very good. The waiter was nice and knowledgeable. The food was VERY good. We had reservations for 7:15 and were seated 30 minutes later. I inquired after a 15 min. wait and was treated curtly by the hostess. No apology for seating us late. All and all, the food was worth the wait. Hostess should have a lesson in manners."

"We were seated in a booth next to the entrance to the kitchen, so disappointing from the start. (Should've asked to be reseated, but it wasn't that bad.) Waiter was fun, extrememly knowledgeable and friendly (but not in an annoying way). Appetizers, soups were excellent (Mussels were great in a fennel broth, kids loved french onion soup), salads were excellent. The most expensive menu item (entree about $39) was disappointing; The bone-in ribeye steak was tough. It was also very salty. The skate-wing (recommended by waiter) was delicious, but quite salty too. Creme brulee was excellent."

"While the menu may not surprise you with innovations, the kitchen's excellent execution of French classics will definitely remind you why these dishes became classics. The great wine list and remarkable service delivered by a seasoned and dedicated staff that makes everyone feel like royalty round out a great dining experience. I was there on a weeknight with not a single empty seat in the house which included everyone from romantic couples to celebratory groups and the flattering lighting and acoustic absorbing decor made it perfect for everyone. "The filet with merlot butter was perfect! I had it medium rare and it was absolutely delicious! The merlot butter does add a slight sweetness. The fries are so crunchy and flavorful, especially when the juices from the steak and the melted merlot butter soak in. I practically licked my plate clean. My husband is a huge fan of the steak frites au poivre style. For dessert, the chocolate mousse was rich and light at the same time, with texture coming from the crunchy chocolate pearls on top. Excellent meal!!"

"Nice place by the park that had pretty good food for the price. Started with mussels and french onion soup that were good, but nothing amazing. Had entrees of steak roquefort and steak bernaise. Steaks were delicious and sauces were great compliments, especially for the price. Also brought out a special chocolate cake desert for a birthday that was incredibly rich, too much for us, but others might greatly enjoy it. The thought of it was very nice and the service was alright. Only downside was the close tables where we mine as well have been sharing tables with others, but that did not bother us much but could some others. Would go again and recommend to others for the quality of food for the price."

"Service was really lacking. It wasn't that busy when we went in, but our waiter was distracted and neglected to pay any attention to our table. Sent out the wrong entree for my friend, so we all had to wait while he went back to the kitchen to place the order correctly. We said we wanted to order dessert, but he waited 15 minutes to come back to take the order, and by then we had had enough. Seating was also very cramped--we had to shift the table and ask our neighbors to stand up from their meal just to get out of our table's nook."

Parking in Lincoln Park West is impossible so you must use the valet parking."

"What a fabulous spot! Due to a challenge with our reservation, the managers were very accomodating and went beyond expectations. Juan and Stephanie, the managers, and the bartendress Jamie, were exceptional. I do plan on going back and definitely in the summer to try the peach parfait!"

"Mon Ami Gabi was an affordable, outstanding restaurant that I had the pleasure of dining at. The food was phenomenal to say the least, and with entrees hovering around $20 a piece, extremely affordable. Mon Ami came highly recommended by an acclaimed Chicago chef and did not dissapoint. Our server was knowledgable on both the menu and the wine list and able to provide suggestions without hesitation. Overall great atmosphere, service, food and pricing. I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone from a first date to an anniversary."

"I am a regular patron of Mon Ami. This night did not measure up to the usual standard. We had to wait about 30 minutes beyond our appointed reservation time. I had requested on of the better tables, given it was my spouse's birthday. We had an okay table, but a young couple (very early 20's) seated immediately after us and adjacent to us had a much better table. Service was just okay. The server seemed to have too many tables. Finally, the Petite Salad should be avoid. I had to send mine back and order the Caesar."

"Mon Ami Gabi is my favorite French restaurant, and one of my favorites overall. The food is consistently excellent and I LOVE the vibe there, it's very lively but not frenetic. I have never had a bad experience and I go at least four times a year. Our waitress made excellent suggestions, but the service is always great as well. The servers are unflappable. I LOVE LOVE LOVE Mon Ami Gabi. Also, thanks to OpenTable for the seamless reservation experience."

"Our soup was barely warm, but very good! Was expecting two lump crab cakes for the $15 price - quite surprised to find one on the plate. My biggest disappointment was our server. We asked her for her opinion as to what wine would go well with a scallop dish. She grasped the stem of the glass and sulked off. Coming back with the bottle, she poured it and left. No announcement of the reason for the selection of what type of wine it was. Her energy was quite different with other tables - more peppy and upbeat and endearing. I had no idea how influential service can be in the enjoyment or lack thereof of the meal. I am sure she thought our 13% tip was cheap. I have tipped barely anything, or 50% before. Not impressed."

"My wife and I have been going to this same restaurant for our anniversary for several years and they never let us down. The food and service continue at a 5star level. We even used to go here when the place was called Un Grande Cafe'. The wait staff was extraordinarily helpful and was very honest with what to order and more importantly what not to order. We had informed the restaurant that this was our anniversary and they served us a profiterole that was outstanding and did this gratis. We will continue to recommend Mon Ami Gabi in Lincoln Park and will return again next year."

"This restaurant is a favorite for us. We often come here for weeknight dinners and to celebrate special occasions. We prefer to be seated in the main dining room which offers views to the park while still feeling cozy - the other room feels a bit cramped and stale to us.

The food is always terrific and the staff are welcoming, intelligent and timely. The wine list always has something on it to suit our occastion and preference.

This is a wonderful place that consistantly provides great food, ambiance and service. We look forward to our next visit."

"Our first trip to Mon Ami Gabi was positive and memorable. The scene was very lively and energetic for a Tuesday night. We sipped some delicious Sidecars before being seated. We were greeted promptly by both of our waiters. I started with the frisee salad with poached egg and bacon. The lettuce didn't feel completely fresh and crisp but the remaining ingredients worked very well together. My husband ordered the escargot which he described as "good" and "traditional." For our entrees, we ordered steak frite with blue cheese sauce and the hangar steak. Both steaks were cookly perfectly. The frites are more like potato chips which I liked, but didn't love. The garlic spinach side dish was solid and tasted very fresh."

"I have never had the fish skate before and it was excellent. I don't like to order things two times but if I went back it would be hard not to order that selection again. Excellent!

We really like the Frisee Salad also.

Les Violettes Cote du Rhone wine was nice as well.

"Terrific experience, overall, but originally we were seated along the banquettes in the back of the restaurant. There are simply too many seats along the banquettes and everyone along there was crammed. We asked to be moved and we also saw other patrons requesting the same. Perhaps the restaurant can remove a two-top from the banquettes and provide more comfortable and releaxed seating for all."

"Wonderful dining experience! Our server was so friendly and knowledgable, and knew exactly what bottle of wine to recommend when we could not decide (i ordered salmon and my husband ordered steak). He was very on top of his game, and I think the wine we had was the best wine I have ever tasted. The food was OUTSTANDING, would highly recommend the baked brie! "We were amazed with the food! I can not explain it with one word. A gentleman served us the soup, a crab and biscut soup, and the did an outstanding introduction with the soup. We were amazed. I have to say that everytime we go out and eat I tend not to finish what is on my plate because a little woman that I am, I find it hard to eat the entire dish. This was an exception! I ate everything on my plate! It was so good! I ordered the Lemon Chicken P--? and the chicken was so tender, mouthwatering. It sertenly a good place to relax and share a night with our loved ones."

"It's nice to have a place like this in the neighborhood and the food is about as good as Bistro Margot's but not quite as good as Kiki's, for comparison. They do deserve praise for being responsive when there is a problem. We arrived early for our reservation and asked to be moved up, if possible (and we know that they don't reserve every table and do accept walk-ins). We paid our (by this time, substantial) bar bill and were seated 30 minutes after our reservation time. It's hard to imagine how a place that has been open this long can fail to know when they've overbooked or mis-timed their diners. One of us talked to them, they were nice and, to our surprise, the dinner was comp-ed. We will go back but avoid holiday-time Saturday nights."

"Perfect holiday spot. Great view of the zoo and the park (the lights at the zoo were an added bonus). But, the food stole the show. Everything was perfect. "Open Table reservations exactly like requested; we were seated at a window table. Wife went for the trout and was not disappointed; it was excellent as always. I had the pork shoulder special and was blown away; flavorful, tender and no fat or gristle. Special dessert was supposed to be a flourless chocolate cake. It was more like a valrhona chocolate cake without the molten sauce; spongy not dense. It was fabulous; just not described quite the way it appeared."

"Ugh. This was our second trip, as the first was horrible, and we decided on a second chance. Even worse this time. We had a reservation for 7:15 on a Saturday, confirmed via email, confirmed again via phone. We ended up not being seated till 8:00. After the wait, we were seated right AT the kitchen door, so I was hit every second by the waiters rushing by. We could hardly hear each other speak at the table, it was so loud. The food was definitely NOT up to par. I had the beef burgundy, which was flavorless meat, with a strange texture. Couldn't detect a hint of "burgundy" in the recipe. Dining partners had mushroom soup, which they both intensely disliked saying it was grainy, and horrible. We all decided we would never return."

"The ambiance was wonderful - tastefully decorated for the holidays. We indicated that we had concert tickets and our server was mindful of that - yet we did not feel rushed. Lots of moderately priced menu choices; skate wing (which is hard to find) was delicious. Everything about our evening, down to the perfectly tasting cappuccinos was terrific. We had not been there for more than 10 years; definitely won't wait that long to go back again!"

"We've been long time fans of Mon Ami and I'm certain we'll keep going back. That said, I was very disappointed in the Dover sole Friday night. "Food: prime rib was excellent, roasted chicken was a tad dry, fish entrees were good. Salad was fresh and nicely unpretentious unlike many other restaurants in this price bracket. Crème brûlée was authentic. Various forms of coffee were done well, though the Gabi Coffee with the Kahlua could have been served somewhat hotter."

"Well, I looked at four other restaurants from OpenTable's top restaurants in Chicago and after comparing the menu, prices and wine list...decided to go back to a known favorite...Mon Ami Gabi.

Thank God there really aren't a lot of people who consider personal service, exemplary menus, gracious hosts and a wine list to die for (without having to actually open an artery) as good restaurants. Yes... I am being funny. I love that Mon Ami is an undiscovered diamond...that way I can still get seating at the times I want...and they don't have to gouge on the prices or skimp on the menu like the other "popular" places do.

Mon Ami...you did it again!!! BRAVO!!!!"

"The food and wine was fantastic after we were finally seated. We had a reservation at 7:30 and were not seated until 8:15. We asked several times when our table would be ready and saw 3 groups seated before us even though they came in after us. The manager (I assume) made no attempts to placate our frustration and blamed the wait on an event they were having that night with no apology. They did in the end buy our desserts, but they should have told us that when we were waiting instead of when the check went down so we didn't sit through the meal annoyed."

"The food was only surpassed by the excellent service! The oysters were about as perfect as they could get. The wine was fantastic. The service and personality of our waitor added to the experience, yet let us enjoy our time together. And the rest of the meal was nothing short of excellent.
