Restaurant Reviews for The Richmond

The Richmond

615 Balboa
San Francisco, CA 94118

Message from John & Thu Ha: The Richmond is a small family owned restaurant. Our goal is to deliver upscale food and service at neighborhood prices. Since the Spring of 2005, we have created relationships with local farmers and ranchers. The entire Richmond Restaurant family would like to thank our suppliers, and most importantly, our loyal customers for your support. We are proud to have you as part of our small community. Wine Program: Our goal is to offer some of the cheapest "restaurant" wine prices in the Bay Area. We believe most local restaurants take advantage of customers with overly inflated wine prices. My wife and I are committed to selling wine at more than 30 percent below typical restaurant pricing. Our wine list has an emphasis on small local family wineries.

Dining Style: Casual Dining
Price: $30 and under
Parking: Street Parking
Cross Street: 7th & 8th Avenues

Review 3 for The Richmond

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"Small, quiet and romantic neighborhood gem. The waiters are very attentive and friendly. The chef comes out of the kitchen to greet his diners twice during the meal, and gave us a complimentary crabcake appetizer. The place is a tad boring, but romantic. The place also needs a more extensive wine list."

Review 5 for The Richmond

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"This is an outstanding neighborhood restaurant that people dream of finding. The food is excellent, worthy of most "downtown" establishments, the service is very professional and friendly, and the prices are more than fair. The fixed price menu is also of interest. Truly a great find and a wonderful resource for the neighborhood."

Review 6 for The Richmond

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"It is the first place we've been in a long time where you could hear your table conversation! Wonderful! (We were in a curtained alcove just off the entrance.)
Service was a little slow but not off-putting and certainly gracious.
To our surprise the chef/owner appeared at our table to "thank" us for visiting and to be sure we were enjoying our meal. A nice touch! As was the little cup of soup that welcomed us before the arrival of our appetizers.

Review 10 for The Richmond

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"What a lovely, versatile and affordable restaurant! The value is truly outstanding. The wine list is priced more fairly than any I've seen recently. We splurged on a bottle, because we couldn't pass up the deal. Our food was terrific, and the service was lovely. The chef was in the dining room several times, and it's obvious that everyone really cares about the experience. Get out to the Richmond soon! We'll definitely be back."

Review 14 for The Richmond

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"I’m not sure how it’s possible but The Richmond just keeps getting better and better. Took a friend there the other night as a “Thank You” for all the great things she’s done for me and we were blown away by the meal. I also appreciate the relaxed setting. Diners are encouraged to sit and enjoy. The wine list is absolutely amazing. The service is friendly, knowledgeable and attentive, even when the place is packed! Of course the host and hostess are as charming as it gets. They are both very down to earth and sweet. There is no arrogance at The Richmond."

Review 16 for The Richmond

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"It was a wonderful dining experience from the service (including the chef/owner welcoming us after we were seated) to the delicious and beautifully-presented dinner. After we ordered, they served a creamy potato leek amuse bouche followed by a small loaf of homemade crusty bread with three butters (olive, chive, & plain sprinkled with coarse sea salt). For appetizers we had a green salad (with cranberries, candied pecans, and blue cheese) and a very tasty ahi carpaccio (with shaved fennel and baby sprouts). For the main course we ordered the bass in a light, brothy tomato sauce, and the evening's special: a lovely, rack of lamb with potato hash and greens. The Richmond is definitely a restaurant we will return to in the future!"

Review 17 for The Richmond

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"We had a fantastic dinner two nights after Valentine's Day... We felt as if we had been invited to a friend's house for dinner. Each course was more delicious than the last; John (the chef and owner) visited our table more than once, and the service from Ian was second to none. We couldn't give a better recommendation than to advise anyone to check this neighborhood gem out!!"

"This was our second time at the restaurant; we will not go back. The service is VERY slow, and the food portions are very small. Review 31 for The Richmond

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"We love the Richmond - food and service was as always impeccable. The chef and staff really go out of their way to make your dining experience memorable. On our last visit we had reservations for 8:45 but the tables weren't moving so we waited until 9:30 for a table. We were offered wine and several times the chef came out to offer his apologies. When were were seated they comped up sparkling wine and dessert. Great hosts and we will return often.
Every dish was a tasting delight and cooked perfectly. Thank you!

Review 32 for The Richmond

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"This is truly a neighborhood "gem", something every food fan dreams about: a local restaurant with excellent food, fair prices, serious service, and an impressive wine list (particularly nice selection of reasonably priced half bottles). Everything we sampled at this restaurant was excellent. There is a nice variety of meats, fish, and vegetarian items. No entree is priced over $20. The starters and desserts were all impressive, and it is quite obvious that the staff is very professional and proud of their restaurant. Highly recommended. There is even a tasting menu, at less than half what the downtown palaces charge. A great find!"

"The food was delicious. The salad with pears & cranberries was a treat for the taste buds. Two entrees were standouts, especially the ravioli with chicken and the hangar steak with crepe. Review 35 for The Richmond

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"Our first visit--group of 6. First rate food and wine. Service was perfect--not hovering but always there when needed. Sang and his helper seemed to enjoy working there, which is huge in making the clients feel comfortable. John, the chef, came around twice and actually seemed interested in how our experience was going! Although the setting was not fancy, it had a very comfortable feel that appealed to us. All that for a price that was modest. We will definitely go back many times."

Review 36 for The Richmond

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"I enjoyed a wonderful evening at the Richmond. The service and food were excellent; the waiter was attentive, knowledgable and friendly. The chef came to our table to welcome us.

The restaurant is intimate, the music was audible (jazz, Steely Dan!) but did not over-power conversation. The neighborhood is quiet and safe. On-street parking is not difficult if you drive (Note: I went on a week night). Prices are reasonable.

I rarely drink, so know little about wine. That said, they appear to have a good selection of wines.

Review 37 for The Richmond

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"We had a wonderful experience at this restaurant. The service was impeccable and the food was amazing. How they get away with serving food like this at these reasonable prices, I do not know. We both enjoyed the foie gras appetizer, along with the several small items they brought to the table before we ate, including some warm bread with several different flavors of butter, which was delicious. The short ribs and mashed potatoes were delicious, and the chicken and ravioli was wonderful and very rich. We will definitely return, we thoroughly enjoyed our dining experience here."

Review 38 for The Richmond

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"The food at The Richmond was sublime. We had the 5 course tasting menu, and each course was paired with wine selected by staff of The Richmond. The food was delicious, and the courses were crafted so that they progressed perfectly. One negative was the Amuse Bouche, a spiced cider with cream (not a part of the 5 courses). It was tasty for sure, but overpowered the wine and food of the first course; it would have been better later in the meal as a mezzo between a fish and beef course perhaps.

The service was also excellent. Our waiter provided timely, helfpul, friendly, efficient, humorous service, but he was not at all intrusive.

"Have been driving by this restaurant for years (we live in the neighborhood) but this was out first time actually eating there. Won't be our last, the food was excellent, the price fair and it's walkable from our house. The table next to us ordered a burger which looked great. We'll likely go have a burger at the bar next time we're in a burger mood."

Review 44 for The Richmond

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"This neighborhood emerald should be praised by all food critiques and local patrons! The chefs amuse was a delicous apple cider and bread with assorted flavored spreads. the pear salad and oxtail/scallop starters were perfectly portioned. the seabass and hanger steak were cooked to exact juicy temperatures. with all the proper seasonings and accompanyments. the sorbet cleased my palate and pecan truffle desserts were rich and scrumptous! The table was intimate with curtains and we never felt rushed with our late reservation. The server was laid back and let me engage with my date. the only regret was I was so too full to finish my brie pastry with my entree. the chef/owner was pleasant when greeted table. same experience a few years ago."

Review 46 for The Richmond

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"We had dinner here to celebrate our 1-yr. wedding anniversary. The service was excellent. We were seated immediately when we got there. The dishes were wonderfully executed, the flavors worked well together. The french bread with 3 butter spreads were delicious, and was quickly replenished when we finished with one plate. Our dessert was brought out to us with a candle to celebrate our anniversary. John came over to each table to thank the customers for their support. He also congratulated us on our anniversary. I appreciated the time and effort he took to thank each of our tables. The Richmond is a great gem in the neighborhood; with delicious well-executed meals at reasonable prices and a friendly and welcoming staff."

Review 50 for The Richmond

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"The food was fantastic. The service was excellent. But the decor -- it needs help. We dined in the curtained off window and it was nice and quiet/private. But the lighting was ghastly and the music was sooo cheesy. The chef's work deserves to be shown off in more aesthetically pleasing surroundings. But please, do go, for the food alone!"

Review 53 for The Richmond

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"Great food and very attentive service. We had:
1. pumpkin soup - very good - tasty and creamy
2. foie gras over bread with pear sauce - outstanding - reason to go back
3. beet salad - also outstanding - very tasty red and yellow beets artfully presented
4. sloppy joes - ok. better next day for lunch
5. wild mushroom in puff pastry - outstanding - savory, individual mushrooms, spinach puree, mmmmm!
6. bread with 3 butters - really good, we had 2 servings.

Note: we went on a monday night at 6pm during thanksgiving week, so we were the only guests there. we almost didn't go in because it was empty, but am really glad that we did! Very cozy atmosphere - an old house with several nooks and crannies - also had a bar where u can eat.

Review 54 for The Richmond

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"The food here is solid, though some might find the menu unremarkable. A few things, such as the chicken ravioli, are not as good as they should be and tend to make some people come away with a bad impression, but the appetizers are stellar, and the staple entrees like short ribs are perfectly executed. Add an extra point for impeccable presentation of the food, and a really nice cozy atmosphere where you can actually carry on a conversation and be heard. The best kept secret in the Inner Richmond."
