"The best of Hawaii's hidden treasures," claim food critics and locals alike. The menu features fresh local seafood, exotic pizzas, colorful eclectic salads and Asian inspired pastas and risottos.
The harbor settings, rich in Hawai'ian history, provide a backdrop of authenticity and charm to the award-winning restaurant. Visit the stone temple Heiau of Kawaihae harbor to view the ancient shark deities on their sunset vigils.
"Cafe pesto was recommended by friends and guide books, so we expected A good experience. However, the food did not quite live up to expectation. The Ono had a very distinct fishy flavor which I had not tasted in other Ono Dishes. Other than that, and maybe that is a normal flavor for ono, the meal Was very good. We would go back and recommend cafe pesto to friends."

"We had heard about Cafe Pesto from mainland friends who regularly come to the Big Island. It is their favorite restaurant here. We went there with the intention of getting leftovers for the next night, so we tried many things. The shrimp nachos were incredible - a most unusual and tasty combination. The Volcano salad was good and fresh. We also tried the chicken and mushroom risotto which was huge. But our favorite thing was the Southwest Pizza. What a combination of flavors! And oh-so good the next night as well. Great service too. Thanks Cafe Pesto! We will be back on our next trip... or maybe on this one!"

"Having had great lunch at Cafe Pesto last year, we decided to experience dinner this time. The atmosphere is casual--suitable for families-- although sometimes the noise level can be high because of it. The quality of the food and the friendly staff however, make up for it . The dinner entrees--especially the ribs, the seafood risotto, and the wok fried shrimp and scallops were all delicious. Portions are plentiful. We are looking forward to trying many of their other offerings when we return."

"Cafe Pesto is a good choice when your island touring or beach day put you near this end of the island- always consistent good quality food at a fair price. Been around for many years."

"Quite possibly the best calamari ever! Everything we ordered was fresh and delicious. Don't come hear if you want the typical American feeding trough of food piled unappetizingly high on your plate, but do come here if you want an excellent meal at a very reasonable price - especially for the islands."

"Great local place that lots of people seem to know about. Creative menu with lots of local ingredients. Pizzas are wonderful and the volcano mist salad is something to behold. It looks like a volcano with heirloom tomatoes forming the sides and crunchy dried onions perched on top. Wonderful combination of flavors, including a balsamic-reduction-with-hoisin-sauce dressing that's extraordinary. Only thing that our party of four considered an unforgivable slip-up was that the chef overcooked the local Ono."

"We enjoyed creative but not fancy local foods and seafood and they had good comfort food for the kids. The desserts were worth having first:) We went back twice during our stay and would go again. If only we knew about it early on in our stay!"

"I have been here on multiple occasions and unfortunately this last visit was very poor in terms of service and noise. They sat 8 unattended kids next to us and our server seemed like she wanted us to leave. Food was fine."

"Food is very good. Like most restaurants in Hawaii overpriced. Portion size was very small for the price. Price was expensive for a "simple pasta dish" with no meat or seafood. However we will return because it is the best that we have found for the money. Pizza is Very Good and is the most affordable thing on the menu with many choices. Wine selection was good and a price point for everyone."

"What a surprise! This is a little restaurant tucked away on the corner of a small shopping building. The view isn't great as it sits across from the harbor and tanks on the waterfront. However the menu and service were impeccable! Opt for a half-order which is more than generous but not overwhelming. This leaves you the option of trying one of the excellent desserts on the menu. We thoroughly enjoyed our dinner here. This truly is a gem!"

"Whenever we travel to the Big Island of Hawaii, we stop at Cafe Pesto for dinner. Their salad greens are very fresh (better than the mainland!), pasta is excellent and the pizza crust is thick but very light. Save room for vanilla ice cream with the coconut tart for dessert. It's our favorite restaurant on the island!"

"Cafe Pesto is a "GO to" place as it is always dependable and it is open all day from 11 a.m. on. They offer good pizza and have a variety of other food to choose from. It is a little pricey, especially if you have wine, but we would easily go again. The wait staff was very good as was the hostess. We asked for a substitute in the salad and they said "sure, no problem"."

"Mainly a pizza place but with some interesting island-type entrees that are pricey. Market-priced daily fresh catch is ~$30. My wife's was slightly over-cooked, but good. I had wok fried shrimp and scallops, which turned out to be a Thai disk. OK, but not great. Small shopping center location. No view, which is good because it overlooks an industrial harbor with big fuel tanks. Service was slow."

"We have been to Cafe Pesto several times over the years when visiting the big island. It is a nice respite from resort-style restaurants. The food is tasty and reasonably priced and our server was very friendly. The hostess, however, could use some coaching in customer service. We were running several minutes late and called from the car to say we would be there in five minutes, and the hostess, instead of saying "no problem, thanks for letting us know" curtly informed usmthat since we're were past the 15 minute grace period (which we weren't) that she would have to give out table away. That being said, our table was still there when we arrived. Otherwise, we had a lovely meal."

"Cafe Pesto is always reliably good with great pizzas, a blue cheese Caesar salad and generous portions of seafood dishes. Reservations are important during the busy tourist season. A table of very loud women unfortunately made dinner less than enjoyable. Not the fault of the restaurant."

"We go for the pizza! Wonderful tender, flavorful dough. Minimal but very tasty ,quality toppings! You don't need all that cheese to make a good pizza and Pestos proves it! Make reservations because this place is booked on week nights and weekends. Worth the drive!"

"Very disappointing from the minute we walked in to when we left! Service was very poor, waiting for an 1 hour and 45 minutes for our meals, when we questioned our server the response was "saute side got slammed". Menu prices were comparable to the hotels in the area, but the quality of the food or service didn't come close to what you would expect. Since we were seated next to an annoying screen door that squeaked and slammed every time someone came in or went out, we heard may comments similar to our experience. The staff simply didn't care, my suggestion, choose another restaurant!"

"The fish sandwiche at lunch is one of the best on the Big Island. There should be more fish specials offered at dinner and also more pasta dishes, ie, a past dish with seafood such as clams, mussels, shrimp, calamari."
