The vibrant contemporary Hawaii regional cuisine of George “Chef Mavro” Mavrothatlassitis, winner of the prestigious James Beard Award, is influenced by his native Provence. AAA Five Diamond rating; Hawaii's only 18/20 Gayot and Top 40 U.S. Restaurants. Dining at Chef Mavro is truly a special & unique experience. Nothing is ala carte - rather choose between a three, four, or six course meal or treat yourself & your party to the Grand Degustation which features all of our dishes, served in tasting portions for the table. Instead of a wine list, every menu selection is presented with a wine pairing offered by the glass. This casually elegant dining room, accented in original Hawaii art and seating 68, is popular for romantic occasions, business gatherings and all celebrations. Lauded by Gourmet Magazine as “where we would eat if we had only one night” in Honolulu, the restaurant is also their top pick in the city for “conducting business.”

"Absolutely divine dining! Every item on the very fresh and beautiful four-course menu was exactly what I'd wanted, including every ingredient of every course, so I could not have been happier. My husband was immensely happy with the six-course menu. The wine pairings were fabulous. Timing was impeccable.

Some of the wait staff didn't seem quite so into their jobs, but the sommelier was very informative (if a little too formal, but all sommeliers seem to be), and everyone was very attentive. The very special complimentary birthday dessert was beautiful and delicious, too."

"We came to this restaurant with high expectations, however, we found it's atmosphere pretentious and while the quality and execution of the meal was good - it didn't warrant the high prices; there was no 'wow' factor to any of the plates. The wine was all $17.50 a glass and the variety of offerings was limited - one or two whites (chardonnay and white burgundy) and one or two reds. We had to try it based on all the write-ups... but would probably not return."

"The food was excellent. We had the six-course tasting menu. Most of the courses were stellar. Everything was at least pretty good. We had high expectations and they were pretty much met. Great wine pairings as well.

The decor needs to be more well-considered given how much effort goes into making the food great. There's no reason the place should look like that. Not nearly cool or stylish enough."

"Went to Chef Mavro after reading the rave reviews. Unfortunately, my meal did not meet those expectations. I had the 3 course "polynesian inspired" menu. The appetizer was the best part - an ahi poke in coconut dressing. The pork was just OK; the huge slab of skin was not toasted enough for my liking, and was just plain slimy/fatty (and I like a nice piece of "crisp" skin when done properly); the vanilla infused sweet potato puree was not a good idea. The dessert was the final disappointment - a taro "pudding" which was very dry even with the coconut cream. The upside - excellent service.

But, I will not return."

"Mavro's lived up to its reputation of being the premier restaurant in Hawaii. The food was delicious, presented well, and explained very well by our attentive staff. The menu at Mavro's is a tasting menu, and you have the option of a 3 course, 4 course, 6 course OR 15 course tasting menu. The 15 course menu featured every item on the menu, and we ordered it with wine pairings (about $250/ per person w/ wine). I found every dish to be good, with most dishes being well beyond good, aka excellent. Our waiter Sebastion was knowledgeable and attentive, and our sommelier presented us with some wonderful wines. This place aims to impress and they deliver. A little spendy, but worth it for a true foodie. 2 Thumbs up!"

"Wonderful in every aspect; don't let the price deter you from this exceptional restaurant. Although much more intimate than top rated New York restaurants, Mavro manages to fit a surprisingly large amount of flavor (both for the palate and the ambiance) into the small dining room. "Not kid-friendly at all. We have been to more prestigious and better restaurants who were very gracious with our one year old daughter - this place was rude and the workers were so snooty, it was ridiculous. Food was only okay, we will never return and never recommend this place to anyone. For this price, Chef Mavro needs to make sure his workers (especially female hostess) get re-trained in customer service. Truly disappointing!"

"Excellent quality food, good wine pairings, staff was attentive but somehow the ambience was too stuffy, especially for Hawaii. I've been to more formal, 5 star restaurants that somehow were more fun & less stuffy. Having said that I have had tastier meals elsewhere when I've paid this much for a meal ($400+ for 2 plus tip). Some courses far exceeded others in flavors so it seemed to be hit or miss. They have an upgraded wine pairing for $6.50 per pairing (above and beyond the $63 pairing) but we were never offered it which I found odd. However, we were happy with the quality and pairings made without the upgrade. The chef did an excellent job accommodating my partner's special dietary needs within the fixed menu."

"This is a very good restaurant and a real gem in Honolulu. We had a wonderful time.If you're from out of town, you do have to keep in mind that this is not New York or San Francisco, and while this is an excellent restaurant, it's not quite up to par with a place like Fleur de Lys in SF. The only downside to Chef Mavro is that the prices ARE as if it were Fleur de Lys."

"The Winter 2010 menu prompted us to dine at Chef Mavro for the first time. The 3 & 4-course dinners were lick-the-plates-clean delicious. Portions were perfectly sized (although leftovers to enjoy later would've also been nice). Service was attentive but not intrusive. It was not a very busy night when we were there, so the noise level was low. However the tables are close spaced, so exuberant tables could become bothersome. The wine charge is pricey, but assume that is due to the quality of restaurant's offerings (we are not knowledgeable). They tasted wonderful with their paired dish. Loved every bite!"

"Location: not what you would call a destination location as it is located on the ewa/makai corner of King and McCully streets. That said, what it lacks in ambience, it makes up in convenient location and availability of parking.
Ambiance: interior is tastefully done in muted colors and textures, more of a relaxing cocoon rather than a hub of activity, perfect for quiet converstaions.
Food: outstanding in every way. Chef Mavro uses organic, locally grown and provided ingredients and presents them in a fresh, delectable way. Add to that the pairing of various wines with the different courses enhances the dining experience.
Service: top notch in every way; attentive without being snobbish, informative without being over-bearing."

"As always our dining experience was exceptional from the food to the wine to the service. We always feel welcomed and the staff go out of their way to accommodate any requests. It is definitely on the pricey side but the quality of the food and the attention to detail with presentation and wine pairing make it one of our favorite restaurants for special occasions and sometimes just because we need a treat."

"We went to Allen Wong's the next night and Chef Mavro far surpassed Allen Wong's in service and ambiance. The food experience at each restaurant was different, with outstanding food at both. The food was outstanding at Chef Mavro (the best gaspacho and pork I have ever eaten). It was expensive but worth every bite."

"Overall, this is awesome place for any special occasion.
Service is perfect, not too much not too poor, or late.
They watch customer very carefully and meet upon their request.
Foods are tasty and right amount (maybe a bit small for men?).

If I could ask a bit my opinion, I would like to have a la carte, not only course menu as sometimes course is too much.
Also the course does not include salad, so it'd be great if it has salad.
As for Wine menu, I prefer having wine list separately so that we have more options."

"We had the six course tasting menu with wine pairings, and the food was very good with some of it being excellent and some of it being just ok. The wine pairings were excellent with each course and really complemented the food very well. The standout for us was the service. The entire staff was extremely friendly and knowledgeable. Overall, we enjoyed our meal and would return the next time we're in Honolulu."

"Sat at a small table extremely close to other diners. Every word from the table on either side could be heard by the next table. Chef Mavro came out to talk to a customer (friend?) behind our table and they spoke extremely loud to each other for over 20 minutes. It was quite disruptive. The food was adequate (I wasn't bowled over by anything in particular) and the service was excellent. Overall though, the ambiance was nowhere near what we had experienced on a previous visit. This was our third visit in a year and we probably won't be going back."

"Highly recommend this restaurant for memorable dining and a sparkling venue. Several selections were exactly what fine cuisine should be...culinary art delighting both the eye and the palate. Vivid watercolors, glass art, beautiful flowers and music completed the ambiance

From the moment the reservation was confirmed and pre-theater time concerns addressed, our needs were met and our expectations exceeded. Parking was accessible, well lit and hindrance free; we were warmly greeted and promptly seated; the menu and pricing were exactly as described; the wine selected expertly paired; and the food perfect in portion and presentation. Minimal delay course delivery, needs anticipation, and prompt request accomodation - we'll return."
