Beast
Naomi Pomeroy, who was deservedly nominated for a James Beard award this year, runs a restaurant that’s both intimate and communal. You sit at long tables and the guests tend to be knowledgeable food mavens, so there's inevitably good conversation. Since everyone is eating the same food, the meal itself is the verbal centerpiece.
The set dinner menu changes weekly and is as responsive to the seasons as a robin and it's usually a 2 1/2-hour affair, beautifully paced with superb service. Pomeroy's cooking is inspired by French grandmothers, with touches rustic and elegant.
The six courses are well-thought-out, individually and collectively, but all of it done in down-home Portland style: no fuss, no white napery. At the end of the meal you have had the perfect amount of food, in exquisite balance. The wine list is small and carefully thought out...a pairing of a small pour for each course is available, and highly recommended! .

"We are from NJ and a foodie best friend recommended we "don't miss this experience". So we made a reservation weeks in advance and we were delighted with the entire evening the food, meticulously prepared and served....do the wine pairing option... The selections were wonderful and we thought each course was special.. The charcuterie course was very interesting....wish the tartare were a bit more seasoned. But the froisgras was memorable. As suggested save for the end of the course....The communal seating idea while a bit awkward at first, turned out to enrich the experience. the folks who shared our table were interesting and knowledgeable as well...about food, photography, This review written by Carol...."

"My husband and I loved our dining experience at Beast. This is not a place for finicky or meat & potatoes eaters or people who dont like communal dining. The food is divine, and we loved every bite of our 6 course prefix plates. We opted for the wine pairing as well and were glad we did. Portion size was perfect - we were quite satisfied but not stuffed. Wait staff was lovely - friendly, sweet, attentive, but not intrusive. The other couples at our table were lovely - our waitress often had to wait for a pause in the lively conversation to tell us about the next wine or course. A must foodies who enjoy meeting new people!"

"We loved the food, and the wine pairings. The print on the menu was far too small to read, and the lighting made that even more difficult, although the low lighting was nice other than wanting to read the menu and look at the wine bottle labels. The background music was at times loud and distracting, and at other times more relaxing. The staff members were very focused and professional. The chairs were very uncomfortable."

"We've traveled the World and have had opportunity to dine in some extraordinary places and eat some incredible meals. Yet this Portland treasure called Beast was able to surprise our palates, tantalize our taste buds and amply satisfy the gourmand in us. I took extreme pleasure and delight in every morsel served. "I have been waiting to eat here for over a year. I pined, saved and reviewed the ever changing weekly menu often. Unfortunately I walked away disappointment and let down. The presentation of food and service was beyond outstanding but the food was over-salted on at least 3 of 6 courses. I couldn't even eat more than 2 bites of my 4th course salad. The selection of cheeses was also a let down. I left a lot of it on the plate and that is saying something for me.
Now I understand completely other rave reviews and I am trying to chalk it up to an "off" night for them. I would recommend people try it because I know she is an amazing chef. It's just too bad my special night was a let down:("

"I had heard about this place from friends& wanted to try it, so i checked out the menu and saw that there was a shorter than normal selection, but still thought I would give it a shot. I had heard it was a bit pricey but had not seen the prices, as they were not listed in an obvious place on the menu. What didn't realize when i arrived was that you sat at a table with others and were served as many as six or more courses. As (an even) very loose vegan this was a bit hard on me. I had no choices and had to sit with strangers at the table the whole night. I had great company in my family and I managed to enjoy many of the portions and I loved the wine pairings. All in all the food was delcious and environment cozy. Unexpected surprise."

"The dining room's community table creates a relaxed atmosphere. (It appeared to be hit or miss depending on who your neighbors were; there would be "safety" in numbers for a "circle of friends" social evening.) The food is AMAZING! We were quite ignorant regarding the weekly menu ingredients, but that did not matter. The main course of strip-loin and the charcuterie plate stand out in my mind as the top two in the six courses. Be prepared for a food adventure. (FYI, picky eaters will not be happy). Chef Naomi and her staff are very hospitable and knowledgeable about the entire dining experience. I would definitely recommend the wine pairing with the meal. We had a wonderful evening and made some new friends too!"

"A dinner at Beast is an amazing experience. The flavors and textures are superb, and it is fun to sit at a communal table. If you're going alone or as a couple, I suggest arriving early and striking up a conversation with another couple as you wait, to find some congenial people to sit with. The charcuterie plate is always a highlight. Our first course, a green garlic and wild nettle veloute, was a delight. The main course featured at our meal was a perfect piece of braised pork belly. The meal was rounded off with a stunning rhubarb galette. The portions are generally not large, but it is rich and very filling. Still one of the top restaurants we have visited in the U.S. But don't go if you can't stomach their no substitutions policy."

"Famed Chef Nomi Pomeroy's intimate restaurant and her amazing staff gave me and my brother the meal of our lifetime. To be perfectly fair, it was Sous Chef Micah that was leading the team that fatefull night. I consider myself above average when it comes to being adventerous with my food. But I will be honest, I was intimidated by some of the items on the menu. The Blood Sausage, Squab Heart Turrine, and Fois Gras Bon-bon were at the top of the list. And after our meal was complete it was the items that I was scared by the most that were my favorites. From the friendly staff, to the talented chefs, to the life altering food it was a completely perfect meal. I would recommend it to any and all foodies."

"We were very disappointed with our meal. Most of the food was good, some pretty bland but we could not hear our server describe the food or the wine, the wine pairings were downright AWEFUL. We'd heard so much about BEAST that perhaps we expected too much. But for a $75 pre fixe meal, it wasn't worth 1/2 that. We won't be back."

"Beast exceeded my expectations... The food was inventive and delicious, while the suggested wine pairings were a perfect match. The communal tables may not be for everyone, but I found the experience to be great fun. By the end of the evening, your two-person reservation turns into a party of 8 or more. I am so glad that put Beast on our list for our recent trip to PDX."

"Beast was one of the best restaurants I've ever been to. The restaurant itself can only hold about 20 people, but you get the full dining experience. It was 6 courses, with optional wine pairing. You have to come here with an open mind though, and be prepared for your tongue to be blown away with new tastes, textures, and experiences."

"I have been wanting to eat at Beast for a long time and it did not disappoint. The food truly was amazing! Each course so expertly prepared and beautifully presented. It was fun to be able to watch as the dishes were plated. We felt some of the wine pairings weren't so great, but we were not there for the wine. Overall an exceptional dinning experience."

"Our experience was good, but not top notch. We certainly enjoyed the company at the "family style" tables, but our server didn't wait until a pause in the conversation about making her notes on our dishes. There didn't seem to be a good connection between service and patron. Our juice glasses were removed halfway through the meal even though we'd paid extra for the juice service. We were not "wow"ed by the food, though everything was very good and certainly fresh."

"Beast is not for everyone. Communal tables, two set seating times, and a fixed menu are all characteristics of dining at Beast that some people may not appreciate. But for everyone else, sit back, relax, and let the excellent food and drinks speak for themselves. The pace is nice and slow, so take your time and savor every bite. The 2nd course alone (charcuterie plate) is worth giving Beast a try. And please try the wine pairings--they really bring out flavors in the meal and make the entire experience more enjoyable. If you like watching the chefs work, sit at the larger table and face the kitchen."

"We loved the cauliflower veloute soup with trout roe, the charcuterie plate (especially the chicken liver mousse) and the scoop of cherry ice cream on top of chocolate souffle. The service was the perfect balance of friendly and professional. And we enjoyed not having to make any decisions about what to order. A lovely place. Extra points for Neko Case playing in the background. Highly recommended."
