The Hard Shell - Downtown
Located in downtown Richmond"s historic Shockoe Slip, The Hard Shell Restaurant is known to locals as one of the best seafood restaurants in town.
The Hard Shell has Richmond's widest variety of fresh and local seafood as well as an extensive raw menu featuring oysters, clams, shrimp, mussels, crab legs, lobster, and much more.
The Hard Shell also features such items as filet mignon, baby back ribs, and many vegetarian dishes.
The Hard Shell is open for lunch and dinner daily as well as Sunday brunch. Every Sunday is all you can eat crab legs and Monday is lobster night. Private dining reservations are available. Dress is casual.

"I got the recommendation from a friend for lunch with my dad, my aunt, and their spouses. They couldn't stop talking about how they liked the place. The salmon was tasty, the Dungeness crab was steamed to propriety; my only issue was the size of the dessert--too bloody big :)"

"Food was very good, as always. Perused a nice Sunday Brunch menu while awaiting our expertly assembled Bloody Marys. Hard Shell Benedict (two succulent crab cakes on muffins topped with perfectly poached eggs and hollandaise) was a fantastic choice (mine!). The more traditional steak and eggs, ham and cheese omelet, and Hard Shell burger (strongly endorsed by the teenager) were also hits. Repeat customers for a reason!"

"I've often dined at the Hard Shell downtown for a good seafood meal. The food is generally well prepared and very pleasing to the palate. However, this past Mother's day eve I ventured to the Hard Shell's downtown location (as opposed to the nearby Midlothian location) and I was disappointed. The nice thing was the availability of a table for four with only a day's notice (that should have been a hint). Beyond that, everything was either average or below. The food was unspectacular - tasting as though each meal was pre-prepared (can I say that?) and warmed to accommodate the pre Mother's Day rush. Not very flavorful and just plain ole bland. These tend to go in cycles - I'll wait for the "good" cycle before I return."

"I had head such good things about this restaurant and was thrilled to be able to go during Restaurant Week and sample different courses. The food was ok but nothing more. I had a salad - it was good with greens, pecans and goat cheese. My husband had the She Crab soup. He loves She Crab soup and this was not one of those great soup moments. I tasted it and it tasted like crab mixed with whipped cream. Very pale and almost frothy. We did not detect any sherry flavor. He had a crab cake. It was good but not one of those moments when you go "I could not make this at home!" It tasted much like ones I get at Fresh Market. My seafood plate was fine but again,not a meal that you said "I am glad I spend $100 for two of us to dine out this evening.""

However -My sole complaint was arriving for an early dinner reservation and requesting a booth, but being told they were full and being seated at a small corner table. And walking into the dining area past four empty booths, and afterwards walking out and seeing two of those booths still empty. It was a quiet Monday night, with little traffic. I felt second class. Doubt we will return here again for the good food. Too many alternatives to explore."

"Dined at Hardshell several times. As always the food was very good and everything was fresh and as expected. Preparation and presentation was excellent. Appetizers were also very good. Service, this time, was a little pushy. We had out of town clients in and had a lot to talk about. We were constantly interrupted by our server, which actually got worse as the food arrived. We had asked for some time earlier to review menus at our leisure, and allow us time to settle in and talk. I am sure the waiter had good intentions, but he would literally just come by and start talking or asking questions right in the middle of some of our conversations. You must strike a balance between being attentive and intrusive. It was a bit annoying."

"We went with my wife's parents who are from out of town. We have dined here on several occasions but it was their first visit. Walking through the door, my in-laws were immediately impressed with the decor. Drinks consisted of pints of various micro-brews on tap while and a bottle of Chardonnay based on our server's recommendation. Appetizers consisted of two dozen steamed little-neck clams - which were amazing. My wife and mother-in-law had lobster dishes - as it was Lobster Monday. My father-in-law had filet mignon and I had the sesame crusted tuna. All dinners were superb. My tuna portion seemed a little small compared to other restaurants - but the tuna I did have was amazing. Shared pies for dessert completed the evening."

Our food was good from the calamari -- not at all chewy, but a little too salty -- to the fish and salads.
