"At Piccolo, the tiny Italian spot in Venice, offers something more than standard fare.
It's an Indian summer night on the Venice boardwalk and a typically Fellini-esque scene with poncho-wearing retro hippies beating out tunes on battered guitars while skaters speed among joggers, bikers and beach lovers walking their pooches.
The crescent moon hangs above the palm trees ruffled by the salty breeze. And at 5 Dudley Ave., a block from the beach, bohemian bons vivants are sipping wine at tables in front of Piccolo Ristorante Italiano.

"One of the very nicest restaurants in Venice. From the moment you are inside you feel like you are having a professional food experience. Delicious, creative and flawless. The service is exceptional (I sneezed into my napkin and it was immediately removed and replaced). And the coffee is the best coffee I have in the United States. I'm not kidding. Get a cup of regular coffee and be prepared for disappointment at home going forward. All this said, suck up the $45 corkage fee. Everyone was really put off the cheapest bottle of wine was $65. We counted a total of 4 bottles of wine under $80. Really? That's offensive. Also, there were no fewer than 10 bums outside, haggling everyone shouting about being hungry. Sit inside! I'll go back."

"sweetbreads were ground & mixed with breadcrumbs to form a tasteless patty. The quail was also ground into a hamburger type meat served with a pasta. The kurobota was cooked through and very dry. The scallop appetizer was perfectly cooked and great flavors. Service was the high note, our waiter was kind enough to split all our dishes without us requesting it. The busboy never left our water glasses empty which is a feat for us as we drink a lot of water."

"The name of the restaurant should have warned us! The servings are 'piccolo' -- more like 'amuse-bouche' . Although no friend of the Great American Helpings, I'd like more than three tablespoons of risotto (no matter how many organic farmers hand-harvested it!), specially if it is dropped in the middle of a huge plate and slapped in front of me... Two scallops (small) for an appetizer that costs $18 ? Dessert menus were dropped on our table en passant, after our plates had been removed. I guess we weren't the in-crowd. How they knew, I don't know! the restaurant had been recommended to us, so we were willing to like it and came with high expectations."

"Absolutely the best Italian in LA. Simple preparation with extremely creative combinations -- like slightly seared Yellowtail on top of Burrata. The wine list, although not the largest in town, is well selected with many great Brunellos, Amarone, and Barolos.
As good as the food is, the service is equally as impressive.
A busy restaurant that deserves a loyal following.
I will be returning very soon!"

"The food was amazing. The hosts were very accomodating. Wine was fabulous. It is, though, a smaller place and depending on table availability, you might have to sit outside, which is not that great since there are a lot of "interesting" characters roaming in the area. But food is just wonderful."

"By far the best Italian restaurant I have been to on the West Coast. The dinner was absolutely amazing. Between the seared yellow tail appetizer to the tender wagyu beef, to the homemade raviolis with shaved truffles, everything was delicious. The staff is not only attentive but great to speak with as well. This is one restaurant I will be returning to for years to come."

"We had a 7 PM reservation for a party of 4 with drinks, appetizers, entrees, deserts and capuccinos, but before the coffee arrived (2 hours into our meal) we were told by an assistant waiter that people were waiting for our table.
Yes, we understand the restaurant was full on a Saturday night and wants to make as much money as possible, but this is hardly an inexpensive dinning experience, and spending several hundreds of dollars and being asked basically to leave was suprisingly rude.
We would have liked to have enjoyed a second coffee, but being polite and considerate we felt obligatged to leave.
None of us had ever had this experience before."

"While the food served was outstanding, as was the wine list, the corkage fee at $45 was excessive. And, the wine list while impressive has a price list that is equally impressive. Pretty much nothing in the $30-45 range. In addition, the tables are quite close to one another, and the noise level is very high making an intimate dinner or quiet celebration nearly impossible.
My overall impression is that while the food is excellent it ain't cheap and there are other restaurants in LA and local environs with equally good fare and ambiance for the price."

"Don't miss the tomato and fresh mozzarella dish. The watercress salad was delicious, but the tomato mozzarella was the appetizer course standout. The quail on pasta was good, although not very much quail. The zucchini soup was velvety and super tasty. The lamb was also tasty, although a tiny bit dry. In the happy surprises category, we loved the pineapple dessert. All in all, we'd definitely come back."

"Dishes were unique,well prepared and presented. European portions, so either order more than usual or don't go starving. Prices are on the high side. All Italian serving staff provides a distinct European flavor, but at times difficult to understand. Typical of authentic Italian, your choice of beverage for the night is limited to wine or water. Location is difficult to find and valet parking is 1/2 block away. Restaurant is small, so noise is a bit too "energetic" (i.e. noisy). Overall, a good dining experience with some drawbacks."

"We went to Piccolo for my boyfriends birthday and it was a great find. The food tasted great and the service was impeccable.
We did the 6 course tasting menu for $80 per person:
1. Duck prosciutto - fantastic, highly recommend
2. Seared scallop - flavors were great but my scallop was slightly under cooked.
3. Pasta - Not sure what it was but it was AMAZING!
4. Pasta 2 - Lovely, just wonderful
5. Pork - again, the flavors were wonderful but my pork was over cooked and dry
6. Dessert - delicious

I would recommend Piccolo to others but for $80 and fine dining, my food should be cooked perfectly. There should be no excuse for under or over cooked food. I would still give it 4-stars because despite the issues, the flavors were excell"

"Highly rated but in a goofy neighborhood (Venice?) Piccolo was outstanding on virtually every front. For the most part I detest tasting menus and we ordered a la carte but Piccolo offers a 4, 6 or 10 course tasting menu from "Bobo" (the chef) which were I to return I wouldn't hesitate to try. Menu is heavy on game (presumably for the winter) but offers unique and outstanding pastas. Salads were notable as well. An extra dessert and dessert wine were brought gratis (OK - we did spill $600)as a thank you. Truly as good as any Northern Italian I know of in the country."

"Overpriced, particularly on the Wine. We went as a group of four. I had the squab appetizer and the pork chop for an entrée. Both of these were lovely. I was far less than impressed with two of the three pasta dishes I tasted, and the portions were tiny. The couple we went with were less than impressed with their meals, as was I upon tasting them.
A simple bottle of a rather modest (and only) Pinot Grigio was $85......They are pretty proud of that grape juice.
The service was good. There are just so many great Itailian restaurants in this town, that I would have a hard time finding a reason to come back."

"The Valentine's Day $100 special was overly priced for the amount of food served.
Really, 5 plates of appetizers. I know foodies may enjoy this kind of dining, but not us.
We attended a theater performance after our six pm dining experience and found ourselves to hungry afterwards that we ended up at the deli in Marina del Rey.

"Came here for dineLA's Restaurant Week, which was a fantastic value and great find for the occasion. Parking was a bit of a pain and the meal was a bit more expensive than I was expecting, but the food and the service was great. I may return again if I'm in the area, but nothing I would go out of my way to visit. I would recommend this restaurant to friends."

"We were going to be 10 minutes late. So I phoned the restaurant to alert them. They said they could not hold the table. The hostess was very cold and rude. We decided we did not like this unpleasant introduction to this restaurant and despite the menu we decided to not go."
