Cafe Berlin
Café Berlin has been serving authentic German and traditional cuisine on Capitol Hill since 1985. It occupies the ground floor of three townhouses whose front yards serve as patio for outdoor dining. The interior features a small bar and two cozy dining rooms. The restaurant is located within a short walking distance of Union Station and the U.S. Capitol. It draws politicians, congressional staffer, and tourists as well a loyal following of neighborhood residents. The traditional dishes are authentically prepared with lighter touch by chefs with extensive experience in German cuisine. In addition to the regular menu, the restaurant offer seasonally changing menus that feature fresh asparagus in the spring, salads and light fares in the summer, Bavarian dishes during Oktoberfest in the fall, and wild game in the winter. Desserts which are freshly made in-house include apple strudel, black forest cake, and luscious cream tortes. The bar offers a selection of imported German beers.

"We've been many times but brought 4 friends who had never been there. They will be returning next time in DC! They've been to DC many times and couldn't believe they missed Cafe Berlin. They won't any more. My ratings pretty much say it all. Everything was great! They even accommodated a late request to add the 4 friends to our reservation. That's service."

"My wife and I celebrated our anniversary at the Cafe Berlin and the staff went out of their way to make it a special evening!! I ordered flowers to be delivered and when we arrived for our dinner, the waiter gave me a knowing wink and after seating us bought over the flowers to our table and to my surprised wife. The staff was very attentive during our entire meal and the food was just spectacular. Will dine here again and again!!"

The food is consistently wonderful and the homemade deserts are just a delight; obviously house made and not from the pre-made-restaurant-frozen-desert-factory that churns out one cloyingly sweet confection after another. "If you like German food, it is definitely the place to go. However, if you don't, they also have other menu items like salmon and steak. Enjoyed the German wine and my husband enjoyed the German beer. It's lovely to eat out on the garden patio, weather permitting. The service was great. Thought the prices were better than most as far as DC goes."

"The specials are consistently excellent. The chef makes the German traditional dishes as one would expect them. No surprises there, but the specials are where the chef shines. I had the salmon special. The fish was cooked perfectly and the sauce was light and flavorful. Service is always consistent. The ambiance is dated, but the place is very clean...something important in restaurants. Cafe Berlin is a place to go for good food at a reasonable price."

"The decor is OLD and should be updated. In fact ,it is just BAD and does no justice to the general theme of D.C. and the city's preservation of their historic buildings. The food was pretty good. The red cabbage could have been fresher, I could tell it had been cooked and reheated a few times and was on its final days. The desserts were fair."

"We very much enjoyed our dinner at Café Berlin!I am of german origin and can attest that the menuis one of the most authentic of any german restaurants which I visited in the United States- and there are quite a few.Wiener Schnitzel,Jaeger Schnitzel, Deutsche Bratwurst& Wurstplatte ,Sauerbratenany many other german dishes which all taste like my grandmother's home recipies.The best of all was the Quark Kaesekuchen for desert- one of a kind- which you only find in Germany or here in Washington, DC at Café Berlin.All washed down with original Warsteiner german beer in an original mug made it a great evening in a restaurant which deserves revisiting.Guten Appetit und Prosit!"

"The name says it all - If you like German food, this is a fabulous visit to the taste and charm of the old country - a sampling: goulash soup, weiner schnitzel, sauerbraten, red cabbage, home made sausages, goosberries or poppyseed cake. Great German beer on tap, one pilsner, bock, and wheat beer. At lunch, one item in each category is Not heavily German - i.e.club sandwich, chicken cordon bleu, cheese cake etc. Be forewarned and ENJOY a lovely German experience."

"We went back to Cafe Berlin after many years of absence from DC to find that quality of food remains as good as it always was. It was quite a rewarding experience! While the decor has not change either and thus, is a bit dated, Cafe Berlin remains probably the best place in DC for good German food. And the beer? "Nothing memorable but if you want a German food fix, this will do the trick.
We were here during restaurant week and my friend likes all things German, so we thought, why not. Portions are ample, but food not too exciting, just fair in my opinion.

"Unfortunately our table was next to a large party of a dozen young people (I would say in their 30s.) We were in our early 70s and 60s. They were extremely noisy, and when we asked them to tone it down they were extremely rude. We asked the management to do something about it and they tried without success. Overall it was a lousy experience. When I surveyed the crowd on our way out, it was apparent that it had become a younger people's place. I was last there 28 years ago. I won't go back.

"I went with a group of coworkers for restaurant week and all 6 of us loved what we got. One person in our party who had spent time in Germany remarked that he would come here to eat every night if he could. The food was delicious and the service was great. Would definitely be making this my go to spot for German cooking."

"I've never had a bad meal here, and this time was no exception. Great place for sausage and Wienerschnitzel lovers as always, traditional dishes my friends enjoyed, but this time I tried a traditional but non-German dish--chicken cordon bleu. The shape was a little off, but otherwise it was prepared perfectly; the outside was golden brown, and the cheese and ham warm and well-balanced with the chicken.
The wine list is dense with Rieslings running the gamut between sweet and dry, and plenty of other German wines complementing the cuisine. The server was knowledgeable, something I appreciate because I am not, about German wines.
It was quiet enough to have a good conversation without having to raise one's voice or strain to hear."

"Not our first visit, but It was our first visit during the winter and although the food is always exceptional the wild game addition was fantastic. I enjoyed the Veal Medallions with a wild mushroom gravy a lot. Our server was very pleasant and professional, the restaurant was quite and has a very romantic atmosphere. Great place for dates and special occasions."
