Hayes Street Grill Reviews List

Hayes Street Grill

Hayes Street Grill is a neo-traditional fish house in San Francisco's Civic Center district, across the street from the Performing Arts Center, opposite Davies Symphony Hall and a block from both the Opera House and City Hall. We use an international mix of recipes, unified with a theme of fish and seafood. Above every other consideration, we want the freshness and pristine quality of the fish, produce, and naturally-raised meats to speak for themselves.

The Hayes Street Grill's walls are covered with autographed photos of the artists who consider the restaurant their club. Though we've remodeled since our opening 33 years ago, the original brass coat hooks along the walls remain, as does our founding philosophy of cooking only the food we would serve at home to our families, albeit dressed up a little, with a religious dedication to wholesomeness.

"We found that Hayes St Grill would take a post performance reservation at 10:15 pm when most restaurants are closed. I had eaten there years ago and remembered it as having good food and lots of choices.
The food was ok, but the menu was mostly seafood. Prices were high and presentation was basic. I think they are coasting on their laurels. My dining companion said, "at least their French fries are good." But you could say that about McDonalds for less money.

"I had my heart set on soft-shell crab but alas had to settle (:) for fresh king salmon. The waiter did say it's best to call the day of to check on the menu if you're interested in a specific item. Their fish is always fresh and delectable and I did enjoy very much my substitute meal!"

"We have had at least three unsatisfactory experiences at this restaurant in the last year and a half. Each time we say we aren't coming back and each time we want to give it one more chance because of its reputation and quality in the past, as well as its convenient location for dining before the opera or the symphony.. Sadly, we have been disappointed in the quality of the food for the last time. There are just too many other good places to eat in the area. We won't try again."

"I have eaten here for years but food portions and quality have declined. Chopped salad used to be robust..now smalerl portion for $12. Petrale sole no flavor and presentation dull for $29? Also smaller portions. Service always excelent. Other restaurant on block serves superb, creative food worth the price. Hayes has gone down hill and would not eat there again."

"I love the bustle and no nonsense attitude of the place. It's good, and it knows it. The food is fresh, innovative, delicious. The grilled asparagus salad w/ fava beans, chicory, and shaved Parmesan was perfect w/ a light olive oil dressing. Beautifully presented. Grilled halibut was light and lovely, though the temperature could have been hotter. That is my only criticism. I like my food hot, and this was just warm. The splurge of French fries is worth it: golden, crispy, hot and delicious. Chilled rose was perfect accompaniment. It is a classic gem."

"I was disappointed that the food was not served in a more appealing way, although my sole itself was delicious. The sauce seemed to have been glopped on and a piece of greens thrown on top. Less sauce, more art would have been better. The bread
provided was soft slices, not crusts from a well-baked loaf. Also, the noise was distracting for conversation. I looked forward to this first-time visit in what I kept reading as one of our best restaurants, but it didn't stand up to my expectations for its price range as a fine dining experience.

"Shrimp Louis uninspired and soft shell crabs oozing in butter. "wonderful" French fries ordinary. Were it not so convenient to the symphony and opera, and on a popular shipping street, one would wonder how it survived...tradition, I suppose. Not a tradition worth experiencing. Most interesting part of the meal was conversing with waiter who had worked there since its opening."

"My wife & I have enjoyed seafood in good restaurants in NY & SF and found the fish offerings on this menu both abundant and
well-defined. The food was perfectly cooked and came to the table hot. The service was on point and the waiter was very patient
about answering our questions about the entrees. My wife who is from NYC commented that the Hayes St. Grill reminded her of
the best seafood restaurants that she frequented in the 80's. My overall perspective of my visit was excellent food with professional
service which will bring me back for more.

"Went for lunch, seated immediately, given attentive friendly service from the very beginning. Presented the menu's with brief - not rushed - descriptions and then we were given ample time to review. As as soon as we indicated we had decided, our orders were taken quickly and efficiently. The food was excellent (soft shell crab, steak, and desserts) - their French fries are among the best in the entire city. Our waiter was outstanding - ideal model of always aware but never interrupting us. This is a refreshing break from the waiters who seem to need to interrupt every few minutes ( at their convenience as they pass by) to ask "How's everything?" as their mark of attentive service. Great waiters like the one we had watch their customers."

"Dined before a concert at SFJazz. Waiter made sure we were served promptly to make curtain call. Food was excellent. It is a popular place, so expect the noise level to be high. Great location for events around Civic Center."

"We had a great pre-lecture dinner....salads are fabulous, fish stew was excellent, lovely menu choices and presentation, wines were terrific and the service was attentive and friendly. It got a little noisy but everyone was happy and we left fully satisfied with our tasty meals. Thank you."

"Hayes St. Grill serves the freshest fish imaginable. The secret to quiet dining mid-week is to eat at 7:15 pm or later on nights when there are performances as SF Symphony, Ballet and/or Opera. The dining rooms are buzzing before then, but then the ambience becomes as quiet as your living room."

"The Hayes Street Grill is the perfect start for an evening at the ballet, opera and symphony. The service is always wonderful and if you like fresh ingredients for your meals, this is the place. A wonderful experience. This is a San Francisco institution which endures the test of time."

"Waiter was noisily chewing gum throughout service. Appetizers was not very good way too salty and mayonnaisey and made with old bread. My drink was made with cheap wine and was nearly undrinkable. Creamed vegetables tasted steamed. The bill was disproportionate to the experience and the amount of food we got (1 appetizer, 2 main courses, 1 drink and a dessert $120 before tip or taxes). The dessert was advertised as hot fudge sundae yet the fudge was ice cold. The only good thing was a salmon of excellent quality and outstanding freshness."

"hayes st grill is such a perfect, classic, san francisco restaurant. i love that it is low key, no fuss no muss, just perfectly prepared and delicious food. it is one of the those restaurants that has stayed true to itself over the years, and along with zuni, and a few others, it is one of the great places in san francisco that has survived through thick and thin. there are so many great restaurants in san francisco, but it's nice to have a few that have been around for so long that they feel like home."

"The restaurant has been there forever so I thought we would try a place with a great reputation. Well apparently that is all that it has. To begin with, although we had a reservation, we were taken from the cool main dining room to the over- heated, nearly empty back room. Our waiter was snobbish. He brought me a short pour of wine. I then watched him bring out 5 generous pours to two different tables. After we received our entree (six ounce piece of swordfish and fries for $28) he never returned. Fish was so-so. Caesar salty and the chocolate cake was not exceptional. The host was the best part of the experience. French fries with swordfish, salmon, etc.??? What is up with that?"

"An old friend was in from NYC to do a ballet, so we rendezvous'd at Hayes Street Grill just around the corner from her hotel. Open on a Monday, thank you, HSG! We had a brief wait at the bar with a delicious French rose from the small but choice list. Then to the table and an enjoyable, chatty, no-pressure meal. We ordered a bottle of the rose to go with our goat cheese salads. As entrees I enjoyed the Sole with mushrooms and my companions had the grilled Halibut with chips. All were delicious. We brought our own bottle for the entrees and no problem. Desert was a Gravenstein brandy, very nice. Service was attentive when wanted, hands-off when we were going down memory lane. A delightful experience once again at the Hayes Street Grill."

"A beautiful early evening in the city----the grill fills up very quickly once opened and then becomes very noisy. As always, the
food was spectacular, service terrific. We were just a party of two-----our table was very small and did require some juggling of
plates to keep everything on the table.
