Located in the heart of Bernal Heights, Liberty Café serves seasonal, ingredient-driven cuisine and carefully selected wines in an elegant, yet cozy neighborhood environment. Lunch and dinner menus change regularly but always feature only the freshest, highest quality ingredients from local suppliers and farms.
Our wine bar, located in our Cottage Bakery behind the restaurant, offers unique, award-winning Old World and New World wines, a full dinner menu, and live music on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evenings.
Liberty Café serves brunch on Saturday and Sunday, but we do not accept brunch reservations. We encourage you to walk-in and have brunch with us anytime between 9:00 am and 3:00 pm.
"I've been going to the Liberty Cafe for many years, and I remember that the food was once better. The wine list is long and varied; I ordered a glass of Argentinian Malbec that was wonderful. I had the salmon special with roasted potatoes and asparagus; my friends had the filet mignon with mashed potatoes and kale, and their legendary chicken pot pie. The food was good, perhaps very good, though the filet looked very thin and appeared to be a bit overdone. Overall, I was disappointed in the dinners, which seemed to have come down a level from years ago. The chocolate mousse cake, however, was to die for."

"We usually have their fantastic chicken pot pie, but decided to stray into other areas of the menu. We had their Cobb salad and pork sliders, and both were wonderful."

"Liberty cafe used to be a real gem but it just can't recover it's old glory. The service was nice, albeit a bit unprofessional, and the location is fantastic but the food is mediocre. We went for the chicken pot pie and it was very mediocre. The food wasn't bad. It just wasn't worth the price. Very sad. And this was under the new chef."

"Liberty Cafe is such a wonderful restaurant for a special occasion ~ out-of-town visitors, celebrating something important ~ or just feeling like excellent food in a pleasing environment. Service was excellent and non-invasive, attention paid without those annoying "how are we doing?" interruptions."

"Our server, NATALIE, provided excellent customer service at lunch on the patio. You could tell she really enjoys working with people. And her genuine enthusiasm helped make our lunch a delightful experience. Thank you!"

"This was a well intended meal that did not work. First off, the server did not understand Liberty Cafe's menu and was uninformed about preparation and serving. I don't understand why the management makes such a decision and I fault them for putting staff out there that are not a plus to the meal. Prep of food was good but tired. My fish was done as requested but cold. The chicken pot pie has too long been a speciality without care taken re: prep. It was soupy and lacked chicken. We like this restaurant, but now I get that we like the memory of it more then how it prepares and serves food these days. Perhaps everyone is bored there."

"The one thing I did not love is the chicken pot pie. I know that is sacrilegious but I do not like big chunks of onions in anything! If I had not encountered those onions it would have been perfect. The banana cream pie was amazing!"

"I'm a neighborhood local - having been to Liberty Cafe several times over the years, so it was my recommendation we choose Liberty . My two friends were new to this restaurant - and we all loved it. The food was excellent, service friendly and attentive but not intrusive and the price very reasonable for the beautifully presented high-quality fresh food. ALl our food was wonderful. I didn't order them myself but the french fries I tried were the BEST. we had a great time."

"This is quickly becoming my go-to restaurant when I host friends coming to visit me "way out" in Bernal Heights and I want to give them a fair representation of my awesome neighborhood. The service here is not fine dining spectacular, but I think it is just fine for a friendly local restaurant. I've been here during the busy brunch weekends, and appreciated how quickly they worked to get food turned out. I've also dined here late on a weeknight and they were thoughtful in letting us linger to enjoy coffee, without feeling pressured to leave as they closed up. Plus everything I've eaten here has made my belly happy."

"For a while, it seemed as though the overall quality of service and food was on the decline at Liberty Cafe, which is why I stopped dining there. However, on a whim, my partner and I decided to give the restaurant another try, and much to our surprise we found the quality and portions of the food to be a dramatic improvement from our previous time at the restaurant. The service wasn't bad, though the server could use a little bit of training."

"I've eaten here many times and loved it, but the other night was a huge disappointment. Scallops wrapped with pancetta: parts of pancetta were crisp, other parts soggy; served on a bed of leak puree which tasted only like butter; green beans: tough, either too old or needed a bit longer cook time; roasted vegetables: pretty good, nothing to write home about. We've had this dish before and it was fabulous, but not this time. We called ahead to ask about corkage fee but they didn't tell us and we didn't know until we got our check that Tuesdays were 1/2 off wine. Wish we had known. Man walking in and out of kitchen, poorly dressed, snubbed my friend when she asked him a question. New manager/chef? New opinion: don't want to come back."

"We've been coming to Liberty for years and I can't seem to get myself to order anything other than the Chicken Pot Pie. The flakey, buttery pastry and the creamy filling gets me every time."

"Though we have lived in the neighborhood for some time, I had not eaten here before, as my husband and I usually prefer ethnic places. I was pleasantly surprised to find everything of high caliber. My friend and I split lunch of a Cobb salad and pizza, and enjoyed the fresh-baked bread at the table. The pizza came with caramelized onions, which at a lesser place might have been strewn atop the two cheeses (goat and mozzarella) -- but here, were underneath, so that the separate tastes emerged with each bite. The Cobb salad was distinguished by a grainy mustard dressing that I felt elevated the tastes of this classic. I will definitely be back."

"Liberty has returned to it's former glory. The menu has even more offerings than before. The ceasar salad, chicken pot pie and banana cream pie are all perfect, just as I remember them. Several new fish dishes are on the menu. The arctic char and sole are particularly good. The pet friendly heated patio with nightly movies is a nice feature."
