Great hors d'oevres. Eggplant, burrata and grilled octopus were stellar.
Salmon excellent, white fish good. Homemade pasta delicious with tangy sausage.

"My wife and I were looking for a restaurant that we had never been to before and we came upon Trattoria Gianni. We went on a Friday night and were pleasantly surprised by our experience. It's close proximity to the Steppenwolf Theater area makes it an obvious choice for dinner before the theater or dessert after the theater. However, Gianni's should be considered for more than just a night at the theater. The food was great and a good value."

"This Italian Restaurant is consistently good. It's the perfect restaurant location if you are going to the Steppenwolf or Royal George Theater. The food is always good, as is the service. They are very aware of the time constraints of dinner before the show. Also, valet park your car here as they will keep it until after the show."

"I keep coming back! Gianni continues to run a fine and reasonably priced operation with delicious found, fine service and nice ambiance. If you come after the theater crowd departs, it calms down greatly taking on a more sedate atmosphere. Be sure to save room for the fabulous desserts!!"

"I think we were here on a not-so-good day.The waiter was clearly doing his best, but there were too many diners for him to do his job well.The food was adequate, and enjoyable, but not stellar. Wine list is alright, in a price range suitable for the dishes on the menu. We were able to get through our meal before the theater in good order. Panna cotta was not good, too much like thick pudding.Caprese salad needed balsamic vinegar. Cannoli was OK, but skippable. Loved the decor, though. Overall, it's a good, comfortable place, but not brilliant. I would go again but probably skip dessert."

"Visited Trattoria Gianni for the first time last Saturday, sooo glad I was able to reserve a table online at the last minute, viewed the menu, noiticed the gluten free choices and took the plunge. The service was great, we were seated right away, the food was outstanding, started with the caprese, cheese melted in your mouth, then came the carpaccio---it was delicious, for the main course I had the Conchiglie with rice noodles, my sister tried the dish and didn't notice the noodls were gluten free, I had to keep her fork from drifting my way, finally desert, 3 small scoops of sorbet that was delicious. Prices were very reasonable. Go, eat, you'll love it."

"I love this restaurant. We eat here every time we go to Steppenwolf and are never disappointed. The minestrone soup includes a range of interesting vegetables. I had veal marsala (not always on the menu, but available any time I've asked)--the veal is of high quality and the sauce is delicious. We usually order a 1/2 portion of pasta to share, which adds to the delightful meal."

"Greeted warmly. Appetizers were good, but the polenta w fungi, etc was superb - will definitely order again next time. Main dishes were good, with the cheese gnocchi best in the city. Desserts - flan ok, gelato trio skimpy. This restaurant is one of our favorite places when we come into the city because it is unpretentious and combines warmth, ambiance, good food and good service. On my open table reservation I said that we were celebrating a birthday. They brought a lit candle to the table and we joined in with happy birthday - we were happy that they paid attention to the reservation request, which we hadn't mentioned when we arrived."

"Dined on a Saturday pre theater, only about 3 tables filled when seated, but it took ove 40 minutes to get appetizer. Mussels were mushy, probably overcooked. Had the salmon special, also overcooked. Veal special was okay, but ordinary. This is our second time there, first time was very good, this was disappointing Perhaps there was a kitchen problem that night."

"Walking distance to Steppenwolf and Royal George. Nice little Italian spot with great food and service. Tables are close so a noisy group can impact dinner, but not a bad place to chat and dine. Our server was fabulous, gave us time to select our dinner and linger over coffee, but still get us out in time for our play."

"We've been to Gianni many times but our recent visit was such a disappointment. The food was adequate and the wines by the glass tasted like a fair jug wine. I actually sent the first choice back. The staff and management is very friendly and welcoming which is why we have returned many times over the years. Not so sure I'll be back now."

"We go to Trattoria Gianni often, and are always greeted warmly by the owners. We also look forward to some of our favorite servers. They know many people are going to the theater and make sure you are served in time so you do not have to rush."

"This is a terrific place for old world Italian food. We go here before every evening performance we attend at Steppenwolf which is just across the street. We discovered Gianni's because of our attendance at the theater, but it quickly became one of our favorites. An excellent menu with an extensive selection of antipasto, salad, seafood, pasta and meat dishes. A solid wine list and excellent, attentive service. Gianni has been doing this a long time and he does it very well."

"Great convenient location from the theaters in the area. The risotto I had was creamy and divine - loved it. My friend enjoyed the crumbled sausage with pasta. The atmosphere was perfect for after theatre dining, very conducive to great conversation because of the low noise volume. The waitstaff was knowledgeable and attentive. I definitely would return to for another good pasta dish. Appreciated that I could recognize dishes that I normally would eat."

"I hate giving poor reviews but it can't be helped. We waited about 5-6 minutes before a menu was brought to our table. Our waiter had 6 other tables besides ours. He tried his best..really. We ordered a salad and an entree. It took 18 minutes to get two salads...the runner delivering the food went from table to table hunting for the person who ordered the food. The communication between the staff was POOR. The food was ok..a large portion of the crowd was going to the play across the street..several people did not get their food in time and left upset!!! It is really sad..the restaurant is cute but lacking in basic restaurant 101 in serving and food preparation. We won't be dining there again before the play!!!"

"I dined at this restaurant with some friends on my 21st birthday. Although we were not seated at our table until 7:30 and we had 7:00 reservations, the food was phenomenal and our waiter was as friendly as can be. Definitely a neighborhood gem with a cozy atmosphere. I will be back! The mussels appetizer were out of this world along with the portifino pasta, the rigatoni, bolognese, and gnocchi!"
