Hy's Steakhouse Encore
One only needs to enter the cozy establishment to realize the extent to which Hy's adheres to tradition. The polished mahogany walls, ornate bar, solid furnishings, and art have been lovingly maintained since they were first installed in 1962. And, with minor exceptions, the menu remains unchanged, featuring the finest Canadian Prime beef and seafood, not to mention Hy's sublime cheese toast.

"My fiancée and I were celebrating our anniversary and decided to make reservations at Hy's. We were sat quickly and our server, Bonny, introduced himself and got us water right away. Wine was perfect...ordered appies, a salad, and two entrees. Everything tasted amazing. Their famous cheese toast is a must! Steaks were cooked perfectly...and sides were fantastic! Was provided with dessert menus...but Bonny surprised us with a slice of their famous cheesecake for our anniversary...on the house! Great experience...will definitely visit again!"

"Watch carefully or you will miss the old building housing a Canadian steakhouse classic. Hys remembers and celebrates the old dayswhen dining was classic elegant experience with grade A servicw. Table side made salads and deserts are as entertaining as the extensive menu. Hys shines on steak but has other foodie finds. Do get the cheese garlic bread and take some home for snacking later. Hys also has kept with the millennium; their wine bible is on iPads. Expensive but worth it. Hys has several other steakhouses in Canada. I've go to their Toronto Location every time I visit."

"Celebrated my father's birthday here in Vancouver, what a great little gem in the city! It was only about 3 blocks from to our hotel, so we all walked, however it is kind of unmarked from the outside so we had walked by it by mistake - If you're walking here keep an eye out! Our reservation was around 8pm on Friday and the noise level was pretty low but it was busy inside! We were seated right away, awesome hostesses, great menu, outstanding food/steak and great service. Everyone was very attentive! I will definitely be back when I'm in Vancouver again! Thanks again Hy's!"

"I have been to Hy's many times over the years and they do not disappoint. I have always gauged other steak houses to the quality of Hy's. I do like there food, but I think it is time for a little updating. I think the choice of sides is not very good, the garlic bread or cheese bread they serve is a joke. All in all it is a classy place for a meal. I recently went to Mastro's in Scottsdale, and was absolutely blown away, I now have a new gauge for my steak house experience."

"Hy's is an old favourite for my husband and I. We hadn't been in quite a while due to us both removing beef from our diet but we found a gift certificate from way back when and decided to go in and check it out. So glad we did. They have great seafood options (the lobster was fantastic)and their service is attentive yet not intrusive. When I made my reservation we advised that I was gluten intolerant and they were so accomodating to us. We'll definitely be going back, even if it's just for the seafood."

The service was amazing; my water was never less than 1/3 empty, my napkin was folded each time I left the table but the highlight of the evening was the Steak Tartar made fresh and to order right at your table!
Our server was personable and knowledgeable, a real asset to the evening.
The decor is fabulous, very high class but comfortable. The viewing window to the grill is a special treat and adds a lot to the experience.
I love Hy's and would gladly spend every special occasion there!"

"I am lucky enough to have eaten great steaks around the globe. In my opinion Hy's consistently serves some of the best available. It is an old school steakhouse in the very best of ways. None of the hi-jinks and kitchen accessorizing of the contemporary steak house. No convection grilling drawers that fire the meat at 5000 degrees on both sides while gently dousing it with butter. Just a straightforward charcoal burning grill, some fantastic cuts of wonderful beef and a few guys who actually know how important all these elements are to each other.
The starters and sides are no afterthought either. From the famous Cheese Toast to the tableside Caesar salad. Service from hostess to waiters to manager is always impeccable.
I'll be back!"

"Very old traditional dining. Our server was just ok. He mentioned that they are famous for their caesar salad and that they prepare it table side, but he didn't mention it till we finished our meal and paid for our dinner. I would've ordered it if that's what they are famous for. I had the steak neptune and my husband had prime rib. My steak was just ok, I've had better. My husband said he liked the flavour of his prime rib but it wasn't hot enough. We went there for my husband's 30th birthday and I mentioned it in the reservation on open table and when we ordered dessert they put a candle in it and took it off the bill, that was nice of them. Overall it was just ok."

"Our dinner at Hy's was wonderful. The food was excellent, with particular praise for the meat dishes which are of exceptionally high quality. Our steak and rack of lamb were cooked perfectly. Accompaniments to the entree and desserts also were excellent. Hy's is a traditional restaurant with added contemporary touches (e.g., the wine list on an iPad). This dinner was a celebration for us and Hy's was the perfect place for it."

"From the moment we walked in the door, the experience at Hy's Encore was incredible. The service, food, ambiance couldn't have been better. Blair (Our server) was so funny and knowledgeable, I could go back just to hear his stories. And Chris (the Sommelier)provided the most fantastic wine to have with our meal. We felt like royalty! "The steaks were the best we've ever had. They are what make the restaurant. My rice pilaf was poorly done but my husband's baked potato was excellent. The asparagus (an extra side - no veggies come with the very expensive dinner) were fine. The mussels included four that were definitely off but otherwise okay. We saw many people order the caesar salad and perhaps we should have too. The cheese cake we shared was small but actually enough after the big meal. The glass of wine we each had was great although the cost of one would have bought a whole bottle so more of a markup than other places. In other words, if you choose carefully, you will have a great dinner. Service was excellent."

After dinner drinks, we ordered single malt scotch and the amount the bar tender had poured was maybe a few drops and I thought that was a rip off. Other than that everything was reasonably good. By the way our attendent was John and his service was excellent. He is the reason our evening went well.
Between Gothams and Hy's, I would put Gothams slightly ahead of Hy's."

"Overall a great experience. Food and service were the best aspects. It was a busy night for restaurants, so it was pretty loud inside, but it wasn't that big of a deal. Seriously, though, the food is the best"

"My wife & I were celebrating and had heard good reviews about this steak house.
Once there we were greeted by friendly staff in an incredible looking restaurant. The wine list was perfect and was followed by delicious apetizers; we loved the cheese bread. The only dissapointment was the steak - it simply failed to impress. I'd ordered the New York Striploin (rare) and while it was properly cooked the flavour just wasn't there.
Everyone's allowed an off night, but when it's the entrée that fails you won't do better than good."

"Hy's is definitely one of the best steakhouses I've ever been to, if a bit on the expensive side.
This time around, for some reason the steak was not quite as tasty as usual (noted by myself and another person at the table who had been there before) - perhaps it was not aged quite as much? But it was still very good.
I definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone who likes a good steak. The wines and desserts are also very good. The one thing I do not recommend at Hy's is their espresso."
