"Very good food and excellent service. The service was on par with that of much more expensive restaurants. Very, very noisy and small place. Definitely get a booth to shield yourself from some of the noise and hubbub and to give yourself a reasonable amount of personal space. The tables down the middle of the restaurant along a single banquette are way too close together to be enjoyable. Portions are large so skip the appetizers (small plates) or anticipate taking home a doggie bag. Had the soft shell crab. Wonderful, but one crab (not two) would have been plenty. Will certainly go back."

"This was my second visit to Evening Star. The food was very good. We started with the Fried Brie which is just decadent although they should serve it with a few more crostini than they do. They are excellent on their own but there is just too much brie and not enough of the toasts to put it on.
I had the fried chicken which was very good; crispy coating, juicy inside and a zesty red eye gravy on top. The mashed potatoes were mashed potatoes and the collard greens were meh. I like collards but these were uninspired. Mom had the rib-eye which was cook as ordered and Mom enjoyed it.
My complaints about the visit are two: the service was slow and it was just too loud. The music was loud and people had to raise their voices to be heard."

"Very impressed with our waitress. After we ordered our entrees, she asked if anyone had food allergies. This is the first time a waiter/waitress asked. Very impressed. I had the buttermilk fried chicken with mashed potatoes and collard greens. Excellent. Such and tasty. Hubby had the halibut. He said very good but was still hungry afterwards. Maybe the portion was too small. George also had the buttermilk fried chicken. We were celebrating George's birthday so the waitress brought his dessert with a candle."

"Were were nervous about tryin Evening Star again after our last visit on Valantine's Day 2012. Our dinner was simply awful. We did hear that there was a new chef and thank goodness for that. We all enjoyed our dinners, fish and tenderloin, and the fried brie was yummy-especially the sauce. It was not the most complicated dinner, but it was done well and we will be back. It's nice to have this place back on our dinner list in Delray."

"A few years ago this was one of my very favorite restaurants, but haven't been for several years as it is difficult to get into. We arrived at about 9:00, and it was very noisy..to the point that conversation across the table was difficult. "An excellent choice for a Saturday evening dinner for a couple. Well run restaurant from friendly greeting to seating and through the meal service. Had scallop appetizer, iceberg salad and tenderloin. All very well prepared and served. Good wine choices to complement the meal. Ordered the apple cobbler (house specialty) for dessert. Good choice though the single portion really feeds four. All in all- an excellent value for money and time spent. Will come back. "Evening Star Cafe was just okay. The service was good, and the decor is interesting, but overall everything was just okay. I feel like the cafe wants to be hip and fun, yet elegant and upscale. Really it is neither. It kind of has a hole in the wall feel, and the only things upscale about it are the prices. Poppers were pickled (weird) peppers stuffed and fried which were interesting but not that great, salmon was good but really small portion, and steak was cooked perfectly but lacked salt/pepper. If they lower their prices, expand their menu, and close the door to the extremely loud connecting bar it will be better. The best part about our meal was the free bread and honey butter."

"The good:
I love the ambiance of this neighborhood restaurant/bar, especially in the lounge area after dinner. It's cozy to have a few drinks and play games.
The staff was very prompt, kind and helpful with the menu, though we didn't like the wine they suggested.
The bad:
Our food was really inconsistent.
Short ribs = EXCELLENT
Rock fish = poor presentation (almost soup like), no flavor, bland
Shrimp fritter appetizer = doughy and bland. Order if you want a deep fried ball of bread with little filling.
Pinot Noir from Oregon - recommended by our waitress, but tasted rather watered down and flavorless.

"We had a wonderful evening at the Star, it reminded me what a superb neighborhood gem Del Ray has. The salmon was unlike anything I've ever had, there was a subtle flavor that I couldn't quite put my finger on, but it was so good. We had an excellent bottle of wine and our waiter Melanie was terrific."

"Above average interpretations of good old southern cooking. Innovative spicing in unexpected places. Cool retro decor. Homey feel. Quirky bar with a respectable selection of craft beer on tap (love the vintage fridges). Crowd looks like the neighborhood; comfortable and casual middle class on the front side of middle age. Will definitely return."

"Evening Star is one of my favorites!
Our favorite appetizer is the Brie... which we ALWAYS get even though I keep trying to try the other appetizers!
The fried chicken was AMAZING. My boyfriend said "This is how you always imagine that fried chicken should taste."
Their wine list is outstanding as well, due to their connection to Planet Wine next door.
Literally a connection - the wait staff walks through a door into the Wine shop to get your bottle!
I recommend Evening Star whole-heartedly and without reservation.
Awesome."

"Love the feel of this place, a sophisticated little bistro in the heart of the Del Ray charming neighborhood. Beef short ribs were outstanding, duck breast was quite nice. Best of all is the WINE LIST!!! The restaurant is attached to a retail shop, and all the wines on the wine list are the retail price plus $10 corkage -- this typically means a savings of 50% or more over typical restaurant wine prices -- and the selection is far better."

"Was interested to try Evening Star Cafe under the new Executive Chef. Was moderately disappointed overall. The new rendition of Evening Star appears to be going towards a Majestic Cafe type food, service level and price point, but is not yet there. Portion size seemed small for the price point. The salmon dish was overly salty and in contrast, the rockfish was served in a bland orzo and broth. Hoping for better."

"I took my 70-something parents. The food was worth the wait, but pricey for small portion sizes and my dad did not get enough to eat. A very limited and specialized menu so those expecting standard fare you will not see that here. They were out of regular coffee of all things and failed to mention it until asked (after waiting quite awhile). I doubt my dad would ever return. On the upside, the homemade pimento stuffed peppadews were divine!"

"Both I and my lunch partner had the same food so can't say it was a wide sampling. The Winter Salad was good, nothing exceptional, but good. The shrimp fritters were disappointing although the remoulade sauce saved them. The young woman who served us was quite nice and the ambiance was good. However the food doesn't make me want to return there anytime soon."

"This is one of the best restaurants in Alexandria, for foodies, and THE BEST for winos. We had the scallops and oyster stew appetizers, the filet and cod entrees, and the mac/cheese and brussels sprouts sides--all excellent. Sadly, too full for dessert! The wine list is the inventory of Planet Wine next door--and very reasonably priced; there's lots of interesting wines to choose from. Ask for the master wine list--the server didn't bring it until we asked. The down side of this wonderful restaurant is the deafening noise--we 50-somethings couldn't have a conversation until near closing, when the restaurant cleared out a little."

"We went for a romantic-post Valentine's dinner date. The food was fantastic...creative, yet simple. The atmosphere was a bit more casual than I expected. A sweater and jeans would have been just fine. I was overdressed in a dress. Even at the relatively late hour of 9 p.m., there were children seen (and heard) in the restaurant. Service was wonderful. Just wished I'd picked someplace with a different vibe for a romantic dinner. We will be back, probably with our kids, for brunch."

"This is a fun place. The server was pleasant, knowledgeable and professional. Nice wine list. We enjoyed the creativity the chef displayed with his food combinations. The execution, however, was a bit lacking: the lettuce for the Caesar salad was just about to turn brown, the croutons boring and I really didn't want Cajun dressing. The cod for my entree had good texture and was not overcooked, but the coconut milk flavor was nowhere to be found. My husband thoroughly enjoyed his short ribs. The banana cream 'pie' was not pie. It was a few banana slices on a chocolate mousse/ganache/pudding/something. Good chocolate flavor, but honestly, it was too cute. A simple slice of well-made pie would have done it. We'll try again."

"I have eaten at Evening Star at least six times before this visit and had found the food to be above average--on several evenings outstanding. This visit, however, was the first time I was disappointed with a few dishes. Perhaps the kitchen staff had an off night or was simply distracted. Shrimp fritters should never have left the kitchen: burnt on the outside and bland tasting. My beef tenderloin was on odd cut and presented with a unmemorable sauce. Radicchio accompaniment was a good idea and prepared well but there were barely three small bites of it.
Good news: Evening Star has set the bar very high. Challenge is consistently meeting the well deserved high expectations."

"this used to be a regular favorite in the 'hood, despite high prices, noise, friendly but poorly-trained service, and unwillingness to take reservations for normal (not super-early) dinner times, not to mention the lack of ability to seat diners with those super-early reservations promptly into an empty restaurant. Why? the food used to be good.
But something has gone terribly wrong, and now there's no reason to put up with the problems. The food is suddenly awful. Shrimp and grits brought 3-4 shrimp on a huge puddle of bland, utterly unseasoned mush. (I think those tasteless grey lumps in it were the "house-smoked tasso," but who knows.) The table next to us wasn't too pleased with their tenderloins either. Feh!"
But something has gone terribly wrong, and now there's no reason to put up with the problems. The food is suddenly awful. "Two couples there after several years, curious to check out the food and service under new management. Unfortunately the food left a lot to be desired and none of us have any desire to return. On a positive note, the sweet potato and corn muffins and honey butter were delicious. My husband also enjoyed the anchovies in the ceasar salad. The winter citrus salad was also a hit. However, all of the entrees were a huge disappointment. The lobster in the roasted lobster dish ($27) was rubbery; the accompanying broth was almost nonexistent and the overall flavor level was subpar. The roasted butternut tortelli ($18) was "just not good." Finally the shrimp and grits ($22) was lacking in flavor and had very few shrimp. Very noisy."
