Chef Jason Fox takes a decidedly global approach to California's tradition of showcasing local, seasonal foods by incorporating diverse culinary ingredients and techniques. "I had heard good things about Commonwealth but we were surprised and delighted by the unusual combinations of ingredients and presentation. Everything was excellent with two particular stars; the peas with tapioca and squid with pork belly.
We dined while the sun was still out and found the atmosphere to be fine but this place is definitely about the food. I hope they keep it that way - you can have a truly special meal without breaking the bank!"

"This place is wonderful. I thought it was going to be another one of those serviceable but unremarkable places that are popping up all over the Mission. It's not; not at all. First, the food is incredible. We ordered off the a la carte menu as well as ordering separate items off the tasting menu (after the waiter checked with the kitchen). Everything we ordered was great, but the asparagus with sunflower seed risotto and crisp chicken skin was fantastic. The waiter was extremely competent, accommodating and genuinely friendly. As for portions being small, I like that. For once I didn't waste half my food. And it may be a bit expensive but it's exquisite, and worth every cent."

"Commonwealth seems to have garnered a strong reputation in a short time. Against these expectations my wife and were satisfied by creative, well presented and tasty food, but underwhelmed in light of the restaurant's rep. I think the menu could be slightly expanded beyound a total of eleven items; and the wine list could be dramatically expanded, and better priced. There must have been no more than fifteen or so choices of red wine; that, taken with erratic and in some case elevated prices made it hard to choose. For example, for Spanish wines there were two on offer, one for $43 and the other for $200. We chose the lower-priced one, which was perfectly good for the price. Overall: a good experience, but not a memorable one."

"Can't pass up the $70 tasting menu. Even at that low price, $10 goes to their charity of the month!
This is fabulous food. I think it's terribly fair that they don't have a Michelin star. Perhaps Michelin's problem is the location in the Mission, with graffiti tags visible on the windows. The food is as good as the best one-star restaurants in town.
Loved the smoked trout. And the sweetbreads. The celery sorbet in verjus was very refreshing, and the chocolate-covered peanut-butter semifreddo was killer (as usual - it's been the dessert on the tasting menu all five times we've gone to Commonwealth.) Presentation is beautiful, flavors exquisite. The chef really likes to play with different textures and temperatures, which is fun."

"The food was excellent! What was slightly disappointing and even annoying was our server's attitude. She did everything she should have done, but with an odd edge/attitude. My out-of-town guests and I noticed it from our very first interchange with her, and there were several other instances throughout the meal. This was in contrast to the last time I was at Commonwealth, when the server was exceptionally warm and helpful. But despite this, overall we had a good experience because of the delicious and interesting food."

"Definitely one of my favorite restaurants in San Francisco that I like to hit up when I am in town. The menu is creative using modern techniques without hitting you over the head with it, all the while taking advantage of the great product that the Bay area has to offer. The wine pairings are well thought out and exciting for the wine geeks, but at the same time the knowledgeable staff are helpful for the novices as well. I recommend the tasting menu ($10 is donated to a worthy cause), as well as sitting at the chef's counter to check out the action."

"This restaurant is outstanding. The feel and vibe are very pleasant. It's a distinctly urban feel but lovely and hip all at the same time. The server we had was knowledgable, lead us towards the menu highlights when we asked. He made excellent wine pairing suggestions and the food was fine dining quality of the very best at moderate prices. I have worked in the restaurant business for the last 25 years traveling and in and out of 6000+ restaurants in that time; Commonwealth is now in my top top 10 list globally."

"The food was excellent! We had the tasting menu and it was worth every cent. Although very loud we were able to maintain a conversation. Had to wait for a table more than 15 minutes even though we had a reservation. Crowd was young and mostly female, which was interesting. Having parking available in the Mission was a definite plus."

"This experience was very disappointing. Execution of dishes was definitely off (Salt, Acid, Overcooked). Service was technically proficient but inappropriate both conversationally and in appearance. The experience was really underwhelming in general.
There are too many places that are on their game every night to give this spot a second chance."

"Service: We were rushed. Dishes were cleared as the forks were put down. Wife's wine glass taken before she finished last sip. Spoiled the experience. Food: Don't be put off by strange sounding ingredients. Artichoke salad, and shaved carrot salad were delicious. Broccoli bread pudding light and airy. Pork jowl and grilled mussels were great. The steamed cod was a beautiful piece of fish, flaky and white, but didn't have much taste. It was the only "not recommend" on the menu that we tried. Chef Fox is very talented. All ingredients were top quality. These are small plates and should be shared--enough for two people with each plate (getting a taste, anyway). Small portions. Good food experience, bad service experience."

"Absolutely love this place and we go a lot. It is just a joy. And the food is fantastic and so shareable. Four people can almost eat their way through the entire menu without feeling totally stuffed at the end. The service is wonderful and friendly too. Can't recommend this place more."

"All the staff were friendly and knowledgeable. Although the dishes on the tasting menu were sophisticated, innovative, and complex, they were presented and described simply and without a whiff of pretension. The portions were just the right size, and we left the restaurant feeling fully satisfied, but not over-stuffed. We opted for the wine pairing with the tasting menu, and got to sample a variety of interesting wines for about the same price as getting a decent single bottle of wine...a great value. We enjoyed everything on the tasting menu, and several of the offerings were remarkable. When we ordered, we were asked if either of us had any dietary restrictions -- one of us did -- and these were accommodated with no difficulty."

"We now understand why it has been so difficult getting a reservation at this place. The food is remarkably inventive, across all dimensions. There are wonderfully contrasting flavors and textures and visuals in every dish. The service was outstanding as well. We got excellent information on the food options, and on the wine, where our server steered us away from a substantially more expensive bottle to one that was quite moderately priced but really excellent both standalone and as a pairing to what we had selected. The meal was a real treat, notwithstanding the location and the tagging on the front windows. We can't wait to find an opportunity to go back."

"Our waitress needs better training. I was already seated when my friend arrived. He walked to my table. Before we could greet each other and before he sat down, the waitress just barged in with the water jar and asked him: "still or sparkling". My friend was quite taken aback. So was I ... it was totally unacceptable.
Food was innovative, and service was good afterwards. But that first act certainly ruined the otherwise wonderful evening!"

"WOW WOW WOW. This restaurant was AMAZING. I'm going to name drop here. Malcolm Gladwell recommended it to my friend who was visiting and who treated me to the tasting menu. Move over Thomas Keller/French Laundry. I'm serious. Each serving was explosively delicious and combined such unique tastes. From the amuse bouche onward, we almost stopped talking and just groaned with delight. You must must dine here. And the waiters and everybody who worked there was so normal and unpretentious and welcoming. FABULOUS."

"Very "interesting" food .... Unique combinations of flavors. The descriptions read like lists of ingredients rather then menu entries but the tastes are good. Not at all for hardy eaters. This is our second time and although we really enjoyed it we will wait a while before returning ...."

"I don't eat gluten so they gave me soup instead of the trout on toast that my wife had. The soup was fine; but everything else on our prix fixe menu (with wine pairings) was absolutely outstanding. The crab dish showed all flavors and harmonized perfectly. When I thought I could not eat any more, I finished with cheese and some quince paste that was out of this world. And, by the way, my wife loved the trout that I did not get. Wines were great; service outstanding. I was in a good mood, but it cannot all have been attributable to that. I highly recommend Cosmopolitan."

"I'm not sure where to put this. Food was amazing, but the experience had no panache. The interior is nothing special. Music could have helped that, but in this case it didn't since it was hard to hear. Or there was none? The wine was great, and the 2 mocktails on offer (since no full bar) were inventive and delicious. Our server was a little spacey. Or aloof? Or in a cult? But she was informed & friendly. The food was excellent. But time and mental space went to understanding what was what on the plate. Which was cool, like a mystery. But not sublime. Or even relaxing. Friday night date night for a couple with kids is a tough play for a place like this. Which doesn't mean it can't be really great if you have the right expectations."

"My boyfriend, my mother and I came here and were impressed at first, but later we all reluctantly agreed that we didn't actually enjoy eating the food as much as we did looking at it and reading the menus. To be fair, they use interesting flavor combinations and come up with some great pairings, like the hedgehog mushroom dish-- great presentation and delicious. However, my pork jowl entree was fatty with extremely bitter sides, and the flavors just didn't marry well. Same with the other dishes. As my mother said, "a little too hoity toity for me." It's just that some of the flavor combinations were only about being interesting, but we just didn't taste anything that we'd crave again. Service was outstanding though."
