Kushi Izakaya & Sushi
Located in the heart of the Mt. Vernon Square neighborhood in D.C. is Kushi, an izakaya and sushi restaurant serving some of the best Japanese cuisine in the city. Izakaya - a traditional Japanese restaurant serving grilled items created from the highest quality ingredients (many of which are flown in daily from Japan) - is represented well here, as Kushi uses a deep charcoal robata pit and smaller yakitori grills to create its delicacies. The grill counter is located in the main dining area and has 30 seats wrapping around it. To complement the grilled meats and vegetables, Kushi presents a fantastic array of fresh sushi and unique concoctions ranging from small-batch sakes and shochus to Japanese microbrews. Focusing on organic and sustainable ingredients, Kushi also puts an emphasis on fresh and delicious seafood. The restaurant features polished steal, reclaimed woods and warm lighting. Kushi offers seats at the grill counter, sushi bar, regular bar and dining room.

"I thought the food, drinks, and service at Kushi were great! I think the only drawback is that, because of the open indoor grilling, the entire restaurant is smoky. My eyes were tearing by the end of the meal, and everything on my smelled for days. Other than that, I thought it was great!"

"The food was delicious and the service was great, but it was too loud in the restaurant. The decor and seating was poorly done. Definitely not a place for a romantic dinner, more like a spot for a couple of friends to have a few drinks, while nibbling on good small bites of food."

"I used to love this place, but my last two times there, the quality in their food has gone down steadily. The age dashi tofu was made with tofu that had been frozen rather than fresh. They didn't have unagi which should be a standard in any Japanese restaurant. I'll be moving on to greener pastures after my last visit..."

"I love the place, the decoration and layout is really nice, the place have a big tables as well as small ones. We make a reservation because were not sure about how busy will be, but there were plenty of open tables. I definitely would return to try more dishes. The slow grill pork was delicious, my favorite dish was a spicy tuna over sushi rice, simple but amazing. We also try the cold udon noodles with sesame and wakame, which was refreshing and tasty. Service was well-timed and friendly, the waiter help us to navigate the menu and was eager to suggest dishes and help us to choose from there selection of sakes. Overall was a great experience, is was a bit expensive, but for us was a special occasion so we were willing to splurge."

"Kushi has a young, hip vibe. We went on a Saturday night. The restaurant was crowded and very lively. It is fun for groups or a date. We had a window side table with wooden stools near the bar. The sushi and yakitori/kushiyaki (grilled items on a skewer) were both excellent. The service is good but not great; they forgot one of our dishes. I would rate it as the top Japanese restaurant in the DC area. However, it is pricey at over $50 per person with drinks."

"I simply love this place! Try to sit at the bar if you can - it's great to watch the food being cooked. Actually this is how we found one of our favorite dishes - the crispy duck thigh - on a previous visit. Don't miss the fried chicken - it is the best I have had in the area."

"Our table was in an awkward place even though I had a reservation. I requested several times to be moved because it was the hubs bday but I was given too many excuses by the host. The bar selection was awful and so is the sushi! The place was too loud so we couldn't hear what our server was telling us half of the time and each other. Place is terrible!!!"

"If you know what an izakaya is, you should love Kushi. If you are looking for just sushi rolls, it seems that Kushi is moving away from that. Also, the choice of music has really killed the mood for us lately. Not a good date spot. Service lacks good timing for some reason, and it's impossible to get the attention of your server due to noise and busyness. The skewers are good. The sushi rolls, if they have any left on your trip there, are excellent. The miso soup depends in the month: in fall and winter it was great, but lately it's been nothing to comment on (too light on flavor). The rice bowl dishes are okay: not as flavorful as I like, but still authentic. If the black sesame gelato goes away, so will I."

"Went to Kushi on a quiet Wednesday night to catch up with some girlfriends. Coming in at 7pm, it was pretty quiet and our waiter was fun and attentive. We started with a round of cocktails -- good but the saki blossom was a bit on the sour side -- and then switch to Kiran on draft. Food wise:

"Disappointing wine list and menu. Price does not reflect the value of the food served. Can't get the Japanese standards right. The beef and pork katsu were fried to death - not juicy and golden as you would get in Japan. The Sushi was average. The tasting menu was a disappointment. Nothing special, just your standard pub fare. I expected kisetsu ryouri - seasonal harvest food - but what I got were your run of the mill stuff. The skewers were small and again, charboiled to death. Won't go again or recommend."

"Reservations were a must for a friday night. They have many tables for any size group, but I will try to request counter seating next time. The lemon lime chuhai was light and refreshing. The food melted in your mouth. The pork belly skewer (recommended) and smoke salmon nigiri were delicious. The smoke taste over powered the duck scallion skewer. They also have chicken liver and gizzards for the adventerous eaters. The onigiri with bonito flakes was just heaven for this rice eater. And the banana desert was a great way to end the meal. One can easily keep eating more and more, but i had to cut down because of price. $3+ for every piece gets expensive. Be selective or go with a group to share."

"Kushi is a good and fun restaurant with interesting offerings, especially if you sit at the robata bar. Unfortunately, it used to be better when it offered sushi (and also had a sushi bar) -- this is primarily because the sushi was so very good. I moved here from SF and don't offer the "good sushi" compliment easily, but Kushi had good sushi. I just wish they hadn't changed their menu.
We had the pork belly donburi bowl, daikon salad, lots of sake, salmon belly and asked for off-the-menu sake (salmon) sashimi. the pork belly donburi bowl (and the salmon sashimi) were delicious. everything was good - but those items were really good."

"This was my third visit to Kushi and the food as usual was superb. For the first time the service was off--a member of our dining party added another Donburi bowl to their order mid-way through the meal. The bowl never showed up. While the waiter did apologize for the mistake he brought the pork belly skewer to the table instead of the pork belly bowl. Otherwise the experience was great."

"I've been to Kushi multiple times. I live 2-3 blocks from it so it's a shock to me that they had their renovations to accommodate people and forget about the ambience which adds up a lot in a restaurant's service as well. They removed the sushi bar and squeeze them all in their barbecue spot in their massive kitchen. I missed their wide variety of sushi. Don't get me wrong but their food is still awesome. They added some but removed a lot though."

"We have loved this restaurant since it opened but were very disappointed in the change in menu. There are many less choices and while many of the dishes we had were very good (the miso soup, the duck and the seaweed salad), some of our favorites are no longer on the menu, like the duck confit and the ribs. The pork belly tasted boiled and took all the taste out of the meat and turned the fat into a jelly-like substance. The beef skewers were tough and tasted exactly like the duck breat skewers. We were quite disappointed."

"Food overall was good, however was not what we weer expecting. The menu online is outdated and this restaurant should no longer be considered a "sushi" restaurant. They do have a few rolls but nothing consistent and maybe only 5 or so that actually contain raw fish. They recently changed their menu but did not reflect this change on the online version, so my boyfriend and I went expecting to have a nice sushi meal and did not receive one. The meal we had was tasty, but definitely not sushi. I would now categorize this more as a Japanese small plates restaurant, almost tapas style."

"There are a lot of sushi places in DC and this one came highly recommended. It may have been over-hyped. While good, the sushi dishes were neither creative or exceptionally done. Although they have a better selection of appetizers and salads. I enjoyed the meal but wasn't particularly impressed."

"I made the reservation thinking this was a Japanese izakaya with Japanese staff. But it wasn't so. NOt that this is a bad thing in and of itself, but my Japanese colleagues tend to want their Japanese food to be made and served by Japanese to ensure quality and authenticity."

"I have decided to give Kushi a second chance. After all, there are not too many restaurants in the neighborhood. However, the food was, again, very disappointing. The meat ant the chicken were very fatty, and the sushi was not good at all. In any case, probably the worst part was the service. We received twice the wrong order. The waiter would not listen to us at all and would bring whatever he thought we were ordering. The second time, he just got mad and never came back. The manager was very friendly and took care of us the rest of the evening."

"Lively restaurant with a high energy level when we visited on a Saturday night. Service was attentive and responsive to our need to order and finish dinner in time for a theatre performance. We tried the sashimi trio, duck breast & scallion skewer, and assorted sushi, which were well prepared. The fish and seafood used in the sashimi and sushi tasted fresh. This is a restaurant we plan to visit again."

"Food was good as always. We were very satisfied. Highlights were the scallop ceviche and the sea salt and the black sesame gelatos. While still good, we didn't think the miso marinated cod was as flavorful as before, but that is admittedly not-picking. Literally, it is only one of two fish dishes anywhere I'll eat as I just don't like fish.
It's loud. Really hard to have a conversation, but it fits the energy of the place. It's not a knock in my book, just something for folks to be aware of."

"We always have a great time at Kushi. The food is wonderful! The sushi is expertly cut at the perfect thickness and the grilled items are nice and smoky and delicious. Fresh fish and produce! I wish they would make the barachirashi for me sometime, but I always seem to come in when it's too busy."

"We came to Kushi for a low-key Valentine's day. We enjoyed it, but everything seemed as though it could have been a bit better, especially for the prices you pay. Our server seemed distracted and would disappear,and food-wise: the pork belly was delicious, the sushi okay, and the chicken teriyaki not worth ordering.
I think I'd try it again, but maybe go earlier in the night (we were seated around 8:45) when the kitchen and staff are fresher."
