Maverick
In the heart of San Francisco’s Mission District, Maverick prides itself on using classic and modern cooking techniques to create innovative menus rooted in modern, regional American cuisine. Executive Chef Emmanuel Eng sources as much organic produce, sustainable meats and fish as possible from local markets and farms. They offer a constantly changing selection of wines from all over the world, and Wine Director/Owner Mike Pierce is always happy to find a wine to complement your meal. Maverick serves dinner nightly and brunch on Saturday and Sunday.

"Unique and tasty take on the American brunch standards. My wife had the lumberjack, I had the Lobster benedict. Her honey ham bacon was amazing. My lobster cakes were flaky, crispy, meaty, delicious. Her strawberry-lime-pepper mimosa was new and different and fantastic.
Parking is available on the street right at the restaurant. Service was top-notch and fast. The host was helpful, gracious, accomodating even to those that showed up without reservations. Can't say enough great stuff about this place, highly recommended. You won't be disappointed."

"The food is creatively crafted without sacrificing taste. . Flavors are subtle but brilliant. The combinations are creative without competing. The presentation is whimsical and wonderful. Every course was as special as the next. I especially loved the several starters. We ordered the fried green tomatoes and gruyere gougres ."

"As a Portland resident I am a little hard to please when it comes to dining out. I enjoyed this restaurant for a number of reasons. I could get in! I found it difficult to choose among the entrees, all of which sounded delicious. I prefer a smaller menu with 5 dishes well done to a larger menu with many poorly executed meals. I also thought the service was particularly friendly, casual and efficient. For high end food they weren't taking themselves too seriously. I hate precious attitude. These guys are down to earth. My only regret was that though we were quite satisfied with our meals we would have considered dessert if something like fruit sorbet were available. Surely with all the ice cream places now in San Francisco...."

"Even at brunch (when it's not on the menu), you can get their amazing fried chicken just by asking for it. Sure, it takes a few minutes, since they're not officially serving it, but you don't do yourself a favor by not ordering.
Just be sure to tip the highly enthusiastic staff (and, if it's brunch, try the house strawberry-and-other-things mimosa. It sounds weird-black pepper?--but tastes great!)"

"My partner and I took my brother to Mavericks. My brother is a well seasoned traveler and foodie from D.C., so impressing him with something new isn't easy. Maverick's combination of ingredients and flavors did the trick. My brother had the Alaskan halibut and called it "fantastic." I had the rissotto and my partner had the lamb and both were phenomenal. The waitstaff was impeccable... knowledgeable and ever present but not interferring. The restaurant's casual atmosphere made it easy to relax, a lovely experience overall. This was my first time at Maverick's and it certainly will not be my last. Bravo!"

"Second visit in recent month - really enjoyed everything. Brought friends from Amsterdam and they also thought the food was super. All our appetizers (we shared a number of them) were excellent - particularly the duck cured in earl grey tea and the bone marrow. All our entrees were top notch. The only less than superior item was the dessert...they were all pretty pedestrian. I say stick to the appetizers and mains and get a dessert wine or digestif."

"We had high hopes for Maverick. It started out well with the fried green tomatoes and octopus salad. The squid ink breadsticks were interesting, but had no flavor. This is where it got disappointing. My friend ordered the short ribs and I ordered the pork chop. He specially asked how the short ribs were prepared to make certain it was what he wanted. Both ended up very disappointing. His short ribs were dry and my pork chop was overly brined and not very hot. When we told others of our experience, they agreed with us. Disappointing."

"I've eaten at Maverick a number of times. Each time I have had good food and service. We started the meal, sharing the deviled egg with caviar. The caviar didn't have much taste, but the dish was tasty as a whole and I would recommend it. There was one egg with a dollop of caviar on each egg. I had the fried chicken and it was fabulous. Moist and flavorful. It was boneless, except for the wing bone. I asked or all white meat; had two huge breast halves, and took one half home. My wife had the short rib which was tasty, but too dry and tough. You really can't go wrong with this restaurant. As a bonus, we parked right in front."

"Went here with my wife for her birthday and we were very happy with the choice. Hadn't been previously but a friend recommended so we decided to check it out. Overall it was very good, but a couple of the food items marred it from being excellent.
On the plus side, the service was excellent with a friendly and helpful waiter. The wine list was very good, and we liked the ambience & general character of the restaurant. What let it down was the food. Generally high quality (the octopus salad was a good choice) there were a couple of mis-steps, such as a slightly dry pork entree and a beet ice cream for dessert (not good)."

"Simplicity at it's finest. A friend recently went and had brunch and raved about the Lobster bread pudding. Intrigued I headed there for brunch and will say i will go again!!! Start with cream puffs: chocolate, strawberry, and vanilla. The Lobster bread pudding is out of this world AND the potatoes served along side are toasted to golden perfection. "None of the dishes at Maverick were standout. For a party of 2 expect to shell out about $100+ for an entree, small appetizer, and a glass of wine per person. This is a very average restaurant, with above average prices, wishing it were of a higher caliber.
The popularly recommended fried chicken (breast and thigh) was fine, but nothing mind-blowing. The only vegetarian entree option was a potato croquette dish, heavy and chunky, with sloppily cooked and soggy truffles, disappointing.
One of my pet peeves here was when I asked the server about her personal favorites on the menu and their response is, "everything is good, I like them all". With so many good dining options in SF, I don't think I'll be returning to Maverick any time soo"

"Inventive and delicious deviled eggs and cornbread fried green tomatoes were wonderful starters. Fried chicken is definitely one of the best around! The fresh baked chocolate chip cookies and milk is one if my favorite desserts and simply comfort food done perfectly. Go on a Monday and enjoy the wine by the bottle savings, too!"

"I had been looking forward to dining here. Although the menu is limited, I would agree that most of the items are tasty. The appetizers were expensive relative to their portions. I had the short ribs which were wonderful but don't order this if you don't like bone marrow. My friend had the lobster and fish and didn't think much of the fish. The fried chicken while tasty, came in one extremely large piece and a much smaller one. Of the three entrees, I was least impressed with the fried chicken because of the size of the pieces and chewy vegetables. Our server was not one bit apologetic about the chewy vegetables and seemed very dismissive throughout the meal. With so many options in the neighborhood, I suggest dining elsewhere."

"Good at Maverick is always good and delicious. The menu is simple and easy to go through it. However, the price of the appetizers is very high while the portion is very small. I do not mind the small portion since it is appetizer but $15 for two teaspoons of crab salad? The price of the entrees are in the range of $20, in par of most restaurants in SF. The price of the wine is reasonable."

"I have been to Maverick before and liked it, but our most recent visit was the best. The salads were particularly extraordinary--we tried the caviar with egg over melted leeks (yes, they were so tender that they melted) and the hay-smoked beets, which were delicious. The wine special was delicious and very reasonable. My main course (the pork) was great as were the desserts. Plus our server was terrific: she knew how to be attentive but not hover and she had a good sense of humor. While the menu is limited, each item appears to be made with great care."

"Came here with some girlfriends for Sunday Brunch. The food was excellent: duck confit and perfect eggs on brussels sprouts and butternut squash. The presentation is phenomenal. The waiter did rush us a little with making the selection as we were having a great time chatting over coffee, but the service was quick. I would return, but there are other restaurants that offer the same experience."
