Confined by segregation to the Dunbar Hotel, musicians such as Billie Holiday and Louis Armstrong found comfort in DC. Because of the strong Black community that lived around and owned businesses along the U Street Corridor, the neighborhood became an attraction for many renowned and rising musicians of that early 1900s. Similar to the later renaissance in Harlem, the richness of the Black Community in the area nurtured these artists and their then-new art form. Yet, before there was a “Harlem” there was “U Street.” And while Harlem eventually laid claim to Jazz, she was nurtured in her infancy on “U Street.”
True to the Spirit of U Street, JoJo Restaurant and Bar works hard to provide the ambiance and sound that blends the nostalgia of the early 1920s with a contemporary flair. Flavorful cuisine and nightly live music set the tone, and provide the adventure seeker with a refreshing escape from the mundane and monotonous. At JoJo, we invite you to shut out the world and its cares.
"This is not my first time at Jojo. We've taken large groups before. This particular evening though when we arrived it was different. I made a reservation for 10. I informed the person who seated us that the table was only set for 8. He reassured me that they'd add chairs but they never did. Finally one of my male friends asked again and we were moved across the room. Dinner was nice. I've eaten at Jojo several times and the food was great, but this evening the food wasn't the best. Some meat was overcooked and the muscles we ordered were tough. As far as service our waitress was amazing! I can't remember her name but i almost always have her as a server and she's great. We will be returning! Deubjs TO DIE FOR"

"We had a fantastic evening. We especially appreciated the hostess accommodating our request to sit upstairs (the jazz band was a bit too loud downstairs). The choice of taped music was fantastic! Great food, fab service, relaxed wonderful atmosphere. We'll definitely be back."

"Wow! With a name like Jo Jo's I didn't expect such a nice quiet evening with the most delicious steak dinner I've had in a while (I don't eat red meat often). It an old town home that was tastefully made into a restaurant. The space is a little tight, but you still manager to feel like you're the only table. The service is very relaxed so if you're looking for a quick in-and-out this isn't the right place for you. This is one of those restaurants you go to dine, not eat. This place was recommended to me by a friend. The funny thing is I went with my mother who was visiting (it gave us some good time to catch up), but I thought to myself that this is somewhere I want to bring my special someone :). Anyway, it's worth trying out!"

"Nice food and entertainment. Did not like our seating location. It was right by the bar and service area on the main floor. People were constantly standing over me and bumping into my chair and table. Service reps were carrying dishes over our head and bumping into us with ice buckets. Not a conveant location for seating. It really gets irritating after a while and makes for a not so nice experience."

"Obviously I made reservations, but when I arrived at the restaurant there were no tables available so we had to wait for about 20-30 mins. It was super crowded in there so we had to stand near the bar. My friend's drink was watered down but when he asked the bartender to make it stronger he did it without any problems. The music was very loud and the band didn't sound cohesive at all, kind of like they practiced separately. I ordered the BBQ shrimp and it was delicious. My friend ordered the Bourbon salmon and it was alittle over cooked and lacked flavor. Our waitress was not very attentive and if we were not honorable people we could have skipped out on the check no problem. Jojo's is a nice spot but not for intimate occasions."

"Great food and a fantastic experience at JoJo! The music is great, and sitting upstairs allows you to hear the music but also chat with your friends."

"Great Food, cozy atmosphere, good music. I would definitely make another visit. I went there as part of our Valentine's Day celebration. The mood was just right. We arrive early and they were able to take us early"

"Food was great, enjoyed the decor, and the live music downstairs. Service was not that great, and felt like the waitress took a very long time to bring out anything."

"Too crowded, and they gave us not a very good table, too close to the Bar...service slow as they have to attend too many tables. Despite that, the food was good, as usual, and we will keep trying this place."
