Amma, the name means "Mother", is an intimate restaurant and has the same soothing qualities. Opened in 2002 by Anju Sharma, is a gem tucked away on the upper east side of Manhattan, the stylish restaurant evokes images of spices, with its ochre colored walls and sensuous red-orange suede wrap-around banquettes. Art deco chandeliers and pristine linens complete the ambience. In a short period of time, Amma has received numerous accolades from the press. Amma was rated "Two Stars" by Mr. William Grimes of NY Times. At Amma, the wine list is updated on a weekly basis and is carefully chosen from 30 countries from around the world. Amma, shows its guest a different India, so old that it is fresh.

"the food at amma is the best representation of regional Indian cuisine with a twist of fusion in the city. the service has now improved to match the food (previously found the staff so incredibly arrogant in serving Indian people that we actually refused to go back for many years). the menu is very good - we were particularly impressed by the spinach chat, trio of rice and goan fish curry. the wine list is excellent for a neighbourhood indian restaurant. would definitely recommend it for those looking beyond chicken tikka masala!"

"This was my first experience at Amma and it was incredible. It was my birthday and there were flowers waiting on the table for us and they even addressed us by our names and took our coats. The waiters were extremely knowledgeably about the food and wine pairings. I highly recommend this restaurant!"

"If you have friends who are skittish about trying Indian food, take them here. If they don't like this meal, they will never like Indian. The waitstaff was helpful, the food well-prepared and nicely presented. Upscale dining and inventive food."

"Amma is great! I've recently moved back to the US after living in New Delhi for several years, Amma stands up to the best restaurants in Delhi. Make sure you don't skip appetizers, they do a great job on their chaat. I was also really impressed by their wine list, quite good for an Indian restaurant."

"I have Indian food at least once a week and have for many years. I was introduced to the cuisine many years ago living in London. I have sampled most of the high end restaurants in Manhattan (classic Indian: Tamarind, Dawat, Chola and fusion, like Tabla. The food at Amma was truly outstanding. I would add that the service was excellent, the staff was warm, helpful and very well informed. The owner came by and was actively working the room. All in all the best Indian food we have had in Manhattan."

"The service was appallingly bad. We waited over an hour for our fist course and the rest of the meal was similar in timing. Worse yet, the management and staff attitude was at best, inattentive and indifferent. Excellent food but a terrible dining experience, particularly as I was entertaining my clients."

"My friend and I enjoyed our meal tremendously in this tiny restaurant. The only food complaint was that the chicken in the butter chicken was pretty overcooked. But everything else was perfect. The decor is really pretty, and the service was excellent. There were two groups nearby that got quite loud, but that's not the restaurant's fault. They had to keep us standing in the very tiny and busy coat/bar area until our table was ready, and so they gave us a lovely dessert on the house. A great evening, hope to return on my next trip to NY."

"This Saturday night was my first trip to Amma but it certainly won't be my last. The food was incredible, the best Indian food I've ever had in NYC. My friend and I were able to partake in the Restaurant Week menu which was extra special as it came with soup or salad, 2 appetizers, an entree, naan, and dessert for $35. Unbelievable! You have to try the chili shrimp appetizer and the mango cheesecake dessert as they were my favorites. My only complaints were that we had to ask for the naan early as it was not served until the entrees and that our table experienced a lot of foot traffic that would have been distracting for a romantic evening."

"This is the first time in a long time, I have to say I can't wait to get back to the restaurant. My friend and I both chose the taster menu(one veg and one non-veg). Well worth the $50. Staff explained what each dish was. It was not the "regular" Indian fare I was used to. My only regret was, they really didnt rush us and let us savor each course, but we had to catch a show across town so we had to ask them to speed it up!"

"Our server was very friendly and accommodating, as my friend and I had reservations on the amount of spiciness of the food. Food, itself, was very authentic, and quite good! "Came for RW dinner with 3 other people- everyone loved the food. Cute little place with nice music (not loud). Decor is not overdone, pleasant colors/ art/ details, warm atmosphere. Wine list is trully impressive (I dined with Parisian people- they know their wine! and they loved the Reserve list). It's not a huge place, but good for smaller groups.

"I tried Amma for Restaurant Week, specifically because opentable.com indicated that it was expensive (why go cheap?) and because I love Indian food. Their offering was unusually varied and generous (soup, two apps, main and dessert) and every dish was innovative and delicious. The sommelier was quite knowledgeable and proud of his wine list. I can't say much for the decor (the place is small, and we were in the narrowest part of the room), but everything else was so nice that it didn't seem to matter. I will be going back for a "regular" meal; if the experience is as excellent as the one I just had, Amma will become a destination restaurant for me, despite the price."

"Don't let your date wait for you -- there's no area to stand/wait so you are seated immediately or have to stand in the dining room. The front door opens directly into the small dining room. Some might not like this, but I thought it added to the uniqueness. Overall the food and the presentation was very good. Portions were on the smaller side -- a welcome change. My lamb chops were tough and probably undercooked for most diners -- I wasn't asked how I wanted them done. Overall positive experience. However, with so many restaurants in New York, I'm not sure I would go again."

"My husband and I went there for restaurant week. The manager was very good and polite but the waiter's service was notably different to the service given to the table next to us who ordered from the regular menu. They arrived at least ten minutes after us and were on desert when we were only getting our appetizers(and the waiter got one of my appetizers wrong but sending it back wasn't worth another half hour wait). Food was good but not worth going back to."

"Given that it was Restaurant Week our hopes weren't particularly high. Boy, were we wrong! They produced a wonderful four course menu with a wide variety of choices, all of those which we tried were fabulous. Probably the best Indian food I have ever tested. Great selection of wines too. We'll be back for sure."

"The staff was very attentive and welcoming from the moment we walked in. Very nice atmosphere, and helpful service. Our server was very accommodating, and answered all questions in a helpful manner. The food was excellent! The Chicken Kolhapuri had a great spiciness to it without being overwhelming, and the Basmati rice was cooked to perfection. The naan was fresh and delicious. Overall a great place to take a date."

"This was our second meal at Amma. Both were characterized by excellent, flavorful food. The tandoori lamb chops were exceptionally good. "We booked Amma at the last minute just by looking on Open Table for Indian in Midtown then checking the reviews. It turned out to be an absolute gem! The food and presentation were exceptional. Comments other reviewers and Amma's site made about the wine list are correct - it's little so the wine list doesn't run to hundreds, but of the many (more expensive and better known) fine dining establishments we visited in north America Amma had perhaps the best wine list, most interesting in terms of choices of style and winery from each country, diversity of countries and regions represented, and in terms of including appropriate information about the wines. Service was also excellent. A very happy dining memory for two travelling Aussies!"

"We came to Amma with high expectations and were not disappointed. Definitely some of the best Indian food in the city - with a more diverse regional sweep than most. "I went to Amma Saturday night with a friend and we had the non vegetarian tasting menu with the wine pairing. It was one of my more memorable meals out in a long while. The food was excellent. It was very flavor intense, interesting, and well prepared across the board. The wine pairings complimented the food nicely. The service was professional, friendly and very attentive. "Overall the food was okie.The problem was that there was no information on the website that said close from 3-5pm.I looked carefully on the website and didn't find it or they should have made it more noticeable to viewers. The problem with that was they made it very uncomfortable because they came up like 4-5 times to let us know they have to vacuum and close.Also,they walked around the table too many times so it felt as if we needed to leave. They didn't inform us that the kitchen will be closing before so if we needed anything we can order.They came up said kitchen's closed.I wanted desert which I informed them when they were taking the food order.I asked three times but they won't do anything to get it basically NO!kitchen's closed."

"Our dining experience was wonderful. The service was exceptional; the owner and maitre-d were so acccomodating, one would think we were the only patrons in the restaurant. But, we weren't; it was full. The food, too, was terrific; in particular, the lambchops and chicken were flavorful, fresh, and succulant. In addition, the ice cream and pastry desserts were unusual and very tasty. We will return!"
