The first Lettuce Entertain You restaurant, Grunts still exudes the funky, devil-may-care lifestyle of the 70s in its style, décor, music, and menu. Happily for all of us, the best eating of that day continues to be some of the best today.
While there"s a huge menu that's as much fun to eat your way through as it is to read, many of Grunts' old favorites spark return visits. The burgers are arguably the best in town. The salad bar boasts more than 50 ingredients daily. Giant malts and milkshakes are hand scooped and come in a rainbow of favors. Oh! Don't forget the barbecued baby back ribs and pulled pork sandwiches!

"One of the best places for an easy meal in Chicago. They have a great salad/soup bar, incredible sandwiches and all of their sides are fantastic. A personal favorite is the Mr. Chicken sandwich, a chicken version of an Italian Beef sandwich. Once can't go wrong at Grunt's--great food and even better people running it."

"I wrote a review previously about a negative experience I had at RJ Grunts and ended it by saying that I hope it was just a one-time situation.
I have gone back to this restaurant 2-3 times since then and have had nothing but good experiences. Great food, good service, great atmosphere and location.
Would recommend it to anyone.
Only complaint is that while service starts out fast and food comes out hot/fast, our server sort of disappeared after we got our food and it was difficult to track her down for refills or for the check.

"This original Lettuce restaurant is stuck in time - great food, great 70s music and I think even a few waitress' from that era! Rated on Yelp as Best Salad Bar - well not sure I would say that, but it has things you typically don't get elsewhere - chicken liver pate or cream cheese with chocolate chips to put on graham crackers. Go enjoy the 70s again."

"R J Grunts is just a great, reliable restaurant. The burgers are some of my favorite in the city: big and flavorful, with quality meat and great options for toppings. The giant mound of cottage fries (like kettle chips)that comes on the side is addictive. They have delicious wings and appetizers, and their salad bar makes EVERYONE full and happy. They also have a simple but very satisfying brunch buffet! It's a comfortable, terrific place to relax and eat before or after a day at the zoo or anywhere in Chicago. Go there!"

"This restaurant is the Chucky Cheese of Lincoln Park. We went at 5:30 on a Saturday night and it was babies and infants every 10 feet. They also had the tables 2 inches apart. Great if you are a young family, but if you want to have a quiet conversation, best to go elsewhere. The food and service were good though, but thumbs down on the atmosphere."

"I enjoyed the lunch experience at RJ Grunts. The service didn't blow me away like many reviews had suggested it would, but it wasn't bad either. I got a veggie burger which was one of the best I've had in all of Chicago and my boyfriend got a burger and loved it. We got a pickle appetizer that was a little small and greasy, but we'll just know not to order it next time.
Overall, great place and we'll probably go back sometime!"

"Very fresh salad bar. But as usual, soups were not hot! I have commented on this at least 20 times on OpenTable but obviously the restaurant doesn't care since no progress has been made. Otherwise, we have loved this place for over 30 years."

"RJ Grunts is one of my favorite neighborhood restaurants. The service and food are always fantastic. I was a few minutes late for my reservation, and they sat our party right away without question. There were many other parties waiting. My friend and I went for the brunch buffet and enjoyed everything. You won't leave hungry, and the options seem endless! I also like RJ Grunts for out of town visitors. It's not your typical Chicago place. It has its own charm and is in a great location with easy valet parking. RJ Grunts is one of my go-to spots. It's excellent."

"hadn't been here in many years. it has not been updated in any way. everything was exactly the same. that's not all bad. oh, the prices were very high - that's changed. was too pricey for the the quality. pitcher of sangrias of mostly ice and not much alcohol felt like a rip off. the food was good but costly. a $15 salad bar, really? even for lincoln park area. it was not that good for the price. waitress was very nice and friendly. the one upgrade was a sign in the ladies room indicating that a paper towel should be used to open the door and yet there was no garbage can by the door to throw out the towel. not well thought out."

"I had been really looking forward to coming here, but after walking past the overpriced, world famous salad bar (it reminded me of the salad bar at wendys restaurants from 10 years ago except at least wendys had baked potatoes And nachos) and taking a seat in the extremely tight dining room, I knew right away that I had made the wrong choice. The burger was in my opinion just average. The French onion soup, again overpriced, was not bad, but not something I would order again. The only saving grace of the meal was the chocolate peanut butter shake. I would also add the Merkts cheddar sauce, except that was a $2 up charge for a small ramikin is a bit much. Go to a different LEYE restaurant for better food at a better price."

"Was told there would be valet parking: they had left early. Was seated next to a cold drafty window, kept my coat on the entire meal. Ordered 2 of their signature milkshakes, returned both because they were gritty. The waitress was inattentive, could see her leaning on a counter in the kitchen as I was continuously trying to get her attention. Thank goodness for the busboy! The Burger was cooked to order and was ok. The vegetable patty "burger" was difficult to eat because it broke apart. Wasn't worth the trip; won't be back."

"Onion rings were good, battered not breaded. My husband and I both ordered a burger and while the quality of the meat was good I was surprised that mine did not come with any lettuce, tomato, etc. It was just meat, cheese and a bun. Service was EXCELLENT!! Very attentive. We were early for our reservation yet they sat us right away. Never had an empty glass, be it the beer or the water on the table. We had a booth at the window and had a nice view of Lincoln Park Zoo. Had the feel of a neighborhood joint which is hard to do with a Lettuce restaurant."

"We have been going to Gruntsd since it first started, but now wel feel that since we are out of the neighjborhood, it really isn't any different that our choices in our home area. It is fine for the neightborhood, but no longer worth the trip into the city to visit.

"It was quite noisy which was okay, but there are really too many tables too close together. It was very clostrophobic and uncomfortable. I had the salad bar and it was so hard to get up and down I only went once (for 14.95!). They need to let less people in so everyone can enjoy their dinner. The music of the 70's was great though!"

"We did the Restaurant Week Dinner and it was awesome! There was so much food included, we ate way too much. The waitress was very nice and helpful, she just had too many tables (there were only 3 servers on a Friday night!) so we had to wait a bit for things. The salad bar and burgers were great, and the wings were much better than we expected, they are definitely worth going back for!
We will definitely be visiting again!"

"RJ Grunts has been around for years and I had never been there. We had a Sunday lunch for my son's 21st birthday. It has a really good reputation but I was not all that excited about it. It is much smaller than I had expected with the tables being very close together. Overall I think we all agreed the food was moderately good, but not great. We did not do any of the specials or Sunday brunch, selecting all of our food from the regular menu. If you're in Chicago and want to say you've been there you may want to from a tourist perspective. They also added a large chocolate chip cookie covered with ice cream for my son's birthday that we did not ask for. Then they added $9.95 for it to our bill."

"Food is great. The serving sizes are huge. You won't go hungry when you come here. The salad bar looks small, but it has some interesting options and won't leave you hungry. The tuna melt trio has 3 tuna melts all with different cheeses, Yum! the only thing they could use is a side salad if you don't want to purchase a whole salad bar to go with your meal, since you get so much food as is.
