"Joseph's is located in the heart of Iowa City at the University of Iowa. A fine dining restaurant in a college town? Don't even think about it -- until now! Who would have thought that a wonderful restaurant having terrific food, great service and a charming atmosphere would be hidden in plain sight. I will never visit Iowa City again without having a dinner at Joseph's!"

"Very nice restaurant to celebrate an anniversary with family. Each table is surrounded by a curtain, making it very private. We tried 4 differant appetizers. The onion rings were excellent, as was the fried Boursin. Two of us ordered the lobster, and felt it was tough, and dry, especially around the edges. Was also fishey tasting. The other six diners were happy with their choices, prime rib, sea bass, and sirloin steak. This is a very pricy restaurant."

"Our experience at Joseph's was great. The service was outstanding. They wait staff really made you feel like you were the only ones in the restaurant. The food was amazing. My wife and I actually stayed a while after we were finished eating because of the atmosphere. Very romantic."

"First time we've ever eaten there and for a special occasion, we really enjoyed it. Service was great, atmosphere just what we were hoping for--quiet, comfortable, with great food. We'll return for other very special occasions. However, it's probably a little too expensive for us to frequent any more often than such special occasions."

"The porterhouse steak my husband ordered was full of gristle. I sent back my prime rib due to lack of taste. The Caesar salads were some of the worst/dryest we have had and the asparagus stalks were the size of tree trunks and had very little taste and were tough to try and even cut. All in all, we expected a far better meal for the price we paid."

"Josephs would be a straight 5 star place but the waitress forgot about our table and it took her 45 minutes to realize that she had done so. All in all I would recommend it though as it still has the best food in Iowa City."

I had clearly requested that the flowers not be brought out to the table until my wife and I are seated and ordered a drink, Sure enough, the flowers were on the table when we arrived, which took away from the surprise effect that I was hoping for."

"I have previously had excellent meals at Joseph's, but this visit was not up to that standard. The pork chops were overcooked and rubbery. The crème brulee was flavorless. The only dish that I would order again was the spinach salad.
My advice to diners going to Joseph's is to order steak, and avoid the pork."

"The steak and the Boursin potatoes were absolutely fantastic. I was disappointed that the crab cakes were lukewarm a at best, and that the creme brûlée had raspberry sauce on it after we specifically told out server that we weren't ordering the soufflé because a member of our party didn't like raspberries. Service was average, which was disappointing for such a nice place."

"We visited Joseph's Steakhouse for a birthday dinner. We arrived about 15 minutes early and were promptly seated. Our server was efficient but not particularly friendly nor particularly knowledgeable about some of the dishes. We ordered simply-salads, a cup of soup, and entrees. The tenderloin was excellent, nicely done, tender, flavorful. The lobster and the salmon special were fine; but not of the quality of the tenderloin (seafood in the midwest?). Overall, a competent dinner but for the price I think I expected something a little more special. Will probably return."

"Excellent service on a Saturday evening. We had two no-shows in our party of five, and apologized for the no-shows. Staff was gracious about that.
Salads were good, bread was good.
Three of us each ordered Steak Frites. One was good, the other two were not good cuts of meat, in our opinions. We understand this was not their best steak option on the menu, but two of us felt they were still not very good.
We have had an excellent experience during a prior visit, and will try something different next time."

"When spending over $100 on a meal for two, I expect something a little special, sadly Joseph's Steakhouse failed to impress. Our waitress was incredibly snobby and judgmental throughout our entire dining experience. There is very little on the drink menu pardon wine, and we seemed to be judged for not ordering an alcoholic drink due to this. With our steaks came a soup or salad, since I don't like either and spent forty dollars for a slab of meat, I figured I could substitute these choices for a different side, this was not the case. I had to pay an extra six dollars just for a baked potato which was extremely unimpressive. The steaks were tasty and lucky so was the red velvet cake dessert.
All in all, I couldn't be more disappointed."

"Traffic was a nightmare but Joseph's was very accomodating when I called and told them we would be 10 minutes late for our reservation. The appetizer, entree and salads were very good. Dessert was a letdown. Not the best way to finish a meal. I had the red velvet cake and the frosting was fabulous but the actual cake part tasted like refrigerator. I also was disappointed when I ordered a glass of Riesling and was given a very sour white wine - maybe a Sauvignon blanc? It was Valentine's Day and they were very busy so I did not want to make a fuss at the time. But other than that, it was a nice experience. Great service and generous portions."

"I have been to Joseph's several times, wonderful environment and excellent food. My only complaint is I am a young adult, and the wait staff came off as a bit rude for lack of a better term. Instead of embracing my date and I lack of knowledge for fine dining they made me feel unwanted at times. With that being said they still did an excellent job at making our experience great. I will continue to frequent Joseph's Steakhouse as their food and ambiance is spectacular."
