Zapatista – South Loop
Zapatista is an authentic Mexican restaurant in the Near South Loop. Made with the passion, heart & soul of Mexico, using the freshest of ingredients, the fare at Zapatista is a blend of regional Mexican dishes that are authentic, yet contemporary. The menu ranges from grilled chicken, pork, steak and seafood entrees with house made moles and salsas to burritos, tacos & enchiladas, plus the guacamole is made table-side just how you like it. "We went to Zapatista for Mothers Day lunch. Our reservation was for 1:00pm and we were seated immediately.
That was one of two bright spots of the lunch. The other was the guacamole. It was delicious.

Other than that, the food was a bust. The chips were soggy, the steak fajitas and burrito were very tough. the burrito was not served as asked and had to be sent back. we waited forever for our server at every aspect of the meal
You might get me to go back and try another meat dish, but with so many other wonderful restaurants in Chicago, why bother?"

"My husband took me here for lunch on mother's day, it was more crowded than usual for that time of day (2 pm) but we were still seated quickly. Their chips & salsa are awesome, chips are alwasy crispy and not greasy. The guacamole is one of the best I've tasted and made to order. I had the tampiquena with rice and beans which was good and out order was out to our table quickly. I always leave more than satisfied from Zapatista."

"This was a great experience for service, food and drinks. We had this amazing coconut margarita with salmon/plantains/spinach and then shrimp prawn fajitas. My only complaint was they sat us next to a large bridal shower party."

"Zapatista has been a wonderful addition to the South Loop and I've enjoyed many previous visits. Unfortunately, this time the ambience and service made for an uncomfortable experience.
The tables were too closely packed together, the lighting imbalanced, and the server was inattentive, lacked personality and erred on our check.

"Friends I had not seen in decades met me at Zapatista for a reunion. We had much catching up to do. The waiter was totally accommodating to our need to talk more than eat, which we did. The waiter recommended the house margaritas which were wonderful. My two guests, being from the west coast, had lots of experience with Mexican dining, as have I. We were very impressed with the variety of regional dishes on both the regular & gluten-free menus. We started with the Guacamola with chips and jicama sticks which was gone almost instantly. Though my ceviche was just ok, the Espinacas y Hongos Quesadillas were a wonderful vegetarian selection. We all left highly satisfied with every aspect of our dining experience. I, living here, plan to return."

"Unfortunately, we were disappointed with Zapatista. The service was really lousy. Our last visit here was 3 years ago, and we were surprised that it seemed to have gone down in that aspect.
Our water glasses were never refilled, we were never checked in on after we received our entree, and we had a hard time getting the check.
Also, the Aztec soup was really comino-ey.....this is such a basic recipe that should be perfect from a regional style restaurant like this.
I couldn't recommend this restaurant to anyone in good conscience."

My husband had the tamales as an app, and loved them, until he had a bite of my plantain/goat cheese empanada, which might have been the best thing I ate all week. I wished I had only ordered more of them. I had the chicken a la maria, which was only ok, I just think there's too much going on with that plate. My husband had the carne asada, which was so good, I almost licked the plate. My friend had the tilapia, which actually tasted better with the chicken a la maria sauce than the tilapia sauce.

"This was my second visit to Zapatista. The first time I went was in the summer and I quite enjoyed the food and atmosphere. The guacamole is made fresh and the drinks are splendid! I had the burrito and it was DELICIOUS! I must say that my favorite are the beans and rice. There is something about the flavor of the beans that is just so darn yummy. The server was very friendly and accommodating. I need to go back soon to indulge in another plate of great good and that divine prickly pear margarita!:-)"

"As soon as we arrived we were greeted with a friendly smile! Our reservation showed up perfectly. Food was excellent, my wife ordered the steak fajitas, unbeleiveable, meat was juicy, tender and melt in your mouth. I had the pork chop and as well it was amazing. "I ended up really liking the quesadillas even though they gave me the wrong ones. I wanted the spinach and mushroom quesadillas with steak added but they gave me cheese and steak quesadillas. They must have been good though (or the margarita was) because I didn't even notice until I'd almost finished the plate lol. Very cheesy and delicious.
The margarita/sangria drink was fabulous, good strength to it and tasty.
I went back the next day because they were having lunch specials and $5 taco and $5 margarita specials. I should have stuck to the quesadillas because they were way better than the chicken tamale (terrible, i hated the sauce....that dish was not a winner)."

"My family went here to celebrate my niece b-day. The staff was friendly and very courteous. There was no wait time and we had reservations,but most restaurant, still have you wait. "We went to Zapatista for Chicago restaurant week with our children (early dinner). We were promptly seated, liked the ambiance, and some quirk decor details, like a mexican doll in a small cabinet. We really liked the appetizers including empanadas del dia and the two flavored margaritas (one pomegranate the other prickly pears). However, the two main entrees (snapper and enchilada de mariscos) were a bit disappointing. They were good but sort of generic and not particularly memorable. So all in all a nice experience and we may go back if we happen to be in the area again, but we did not find Zapatista different from other Mexican restaurants of similar quality."

"My girlfriends and I hadn't seen each other in awhile and decided on Zapatista for dinner and cocktails. Unfortunately I will not recommend this spot to others. The food and drinks are over priced. The best thing about our meal was the guacamole (which they only give you a very small portion of). We had to order two servings for only three people. The server suggested the all you can eat fish tacos and when two of our party ordered them, the waiter never came back to refill the 3 bland pieces that they were given to begin with. They had to flag another waiter down just to get a refill almost an hour later. I ordered the shrimp fajitas but was disappointed that there was no flavor to them (how is that possible?!). Thumbs down."

"The food here was great! We enjoyed their selection of brunch/lunch which was not pricey. The Mexican mimosas are delicious and I would definitely recommend them. It did take some time to get our order, but I won't complain because it was worth the wait! I would recommend their empanadas, they were delicious!"

"had been to the restaurant several times,and this time took advantage of the Retaurant Weel deal for lunch @ $22 pp. We liked the fact that we weren't really limited (up to $16.99 for the entree) in price, and had the full selection of apps, entrees, and dessert. Service was just okay...server had to check to see what the restaurant week deal was....really? It's the last day....one would think that he should have known by then!"

"Service was not good at all. Steak was overcooked, asked for medium rare and it was well done. Nicely told our waiter and he offered to bring another steak but we waited 40 minutes for the first steak, we didn't have that kind of time. Didn't ask to take it off our bill or even offer us a little dessert to make up for it. Also never came by to refill our water, after waiting so long I finally went to the service station and got my own pitcher of water. Service was slow and not worth the wait."

"I went here with two of my friends and overall we enjoyed ourselves. The waiter could of paid more attention to us , I felt like we had to track him down too much. I ordered the carne asada and it was ok. This place has great margaritas though."

"I've always driven by this place almost everyday after work, and I was curious about it. I'm so glad I booked a table here for a girls' dinner outing. The food was spectacular! And their Margaritas were perfect. All of us were deeply satisfied with portions and pricing. The decor was great too. I did notice that their service was slightly slow, but I think it was due to lack of waiters working that night. Overall, I am definitely going back for a romantic dinner or with the family."

"Came by here last week for dinner with friends and will admit that I was pleasantly surprised. We ordered the fajitas for two and it came in this awesome rock mortar contraption. Not your typical Applebees style skillet fajitas. The service was a bit slow but overall okay. Would like to come back for fish taco night."

"We went for my birthday on a Friday night and even though we had reservations, we were seated about 20 minutes beyond our reservation. I was very annoyed but the hostess was very apologetic and stated that although people were done eating, they were not leaving. When we were finally seated we were given a complimentary round of drinks and dessert. To me, that's how you run a business. Our waitress was excellent and the food was outstanding. I normally do not wait more than 10 minutes for a table at any restaurant just as a rule, and although I would not do it again at Zapatista, I can at least say that they know how to treat customers. I will definitely go there again, I will simply make my reservations for earlier in the evening."
