Oak features a menu that implements classic steakhouse fare with Chef Brett McKee’s favorite Italian dishes. The menu includes generous cuts of USDA Prime Porterhouse, Bone in Rib-eye, New York Strip, Filet Mignon, Rack of Lamb and various types of Veal. Italian specialties incorporated are Penne a la Vodka, Linguini alla Carbonara, and Lobster Macaroni and Cheese. Seafood dishes such as Jumbo Lump Crabcakes, Lobster, Pan Seared Grouper, Yellowfin Tuna, and Atlantic Salmon round out the entrée menu. The dining experience is heightened by the incredible surroundings. The bar is adjacent to a wine room situated within the original bank vault dating from the 1800s. In addition to the bar, there are five separate dining rooms on three floors each with a distinct and elegant atmosphere. "For fine dining with a strong Charleston flavor and atmosphere, this restaurant did not disappoint! Third floor dining is the most romantic room. Our food was very good, but not quite exceptional, considering the price. Service was very friendly and attentive. Overall, a delightful evening...we will return!"

"The steaks were not as good as other steakhouses and therefore were overpriced. Very ordinary caesar salad and side was returned since it was poor. They took it off the bill which we expected. The third floor is quieter than the first and second and we recommend a seat by the window. Lovely setting and nice waitstaff although the person delivering the meals placed one of the dishes off to the side rather in front of the person served--odd--seemed not to be suited for the task."

"Oak Steakhouse was a disappointment. The food was below average for that type of restaurant and the ambiance was average. But the worst part was the service. The waiter never asked how things were going, how the food was, or anything. We were in Charleston
for the weekend and made reservations which ended up being a mistake. Anyways, you live and learn. And if you never have expectations, you will never be disappointed."

"My wife and I both had the 7 oz Filet. It was impeccible. Ours sides were Hash Browns and Aspargus. No sauce was ordered with our steaks, honestly the steak did not need it. It's juices were sauce enough."

"We were in Charleston for Wine and Food weekend. As a vegetarian, I very much appreciated that a STEAK HOUSE had 2 veggie options - usually at a steak house i get a potato and some veggies. My boyfriend loved his steak and the wine list was good. Overall a great experience, be prepared to drop a bit of cash, but for a special occasion it is worth it!"

"Service was excellent. However, we were "underwhelmed" by the steaks. The presentation, service and ambiance were most acceptable. However, we went for steaks and there in lies our disappointment. We ordered filets. They were cooked to our desired temperature. However, for the price we felt a bit disappointed. There just wasn't enough differentiation between the overall meal at Oak and what might be found at a mid range establishment. That is to say, we did not fell we got value for the price. We are accustomed to paying for a fine dining experience but we expect everything to be "right" especially the meal."

"We encountered one of the worst hostesses we have ever had. We had a reservation and the restaurant was not full. First. the hostess tried to seat us in a very noisy bar. When she did reseat us it was at a table where one of the seats was directly over an air vent emitting very cold air (it was a chilly night). Our waiter was great. The food was good. Nonetheless, I was very disappointed in the management."

"The food was good. Our steaks were done exactly as ordered. The atmosphere is very nice and the service is very good. Having said that, the food is overpriced and not the quality I would expect from fine dining in Charleston. It lacked creativity and presentation. While the food was good, it was not excellent. "This was our second trip to Oak Steakhouse, and Chef Brett McKee and his staff really worked to make it a special one. The food was amazing - steaks cooked to perfection, presentations were top-notch, and the flavors were to die for! My companion enjoyed the 7oz Filet Mignon Crab Oscar style, and I cut into the sublime 16oz CAB Prime NY Strip, which was paired with a delicious Balsamic BBQ sauce that fit the steak & grilled onions perfectly. Topping it all off was the sinfully decadent Chocolate Indulgence, which I must say is one of the best chocolate cakes I have ever tasted. Should you ever find yourself in Charleston, you would be doing yourself a disservice to miss the experience of Oak Steakhouse. Wonderful! 4 stars!"

"Overall the experience was good once our table was moved. The 3rd floor does not have a casual atmosphere as the tables are entirely too close together. No music is heard at all either and that means you are hearing 4 conversations at once with your neighbor an elbow away. The Caesar salad was horrible, the dressing had no taste and the veal marsala was overcooked. The service was great however and the veal parmasean and the gorgonzola cheese fondue appetizer was delicious as well."

"I have worked in the restaurant industry for more than 15 years and I am currently enrolled in culinary school.I have never had a better dining experience.Brandon was our server, yet there were at least 3-4 other staff members that checked on us.Brandon was pleasant, professional, and made sure that all of our dining needs were taken care of.Foodwise, the cajun blackened New York strip was probably the best piece of beef that I have ever eaten.Obviously, the chef understands that simple ingredients prepared properly result in wonderful food.We also had the tuna tartar as an appetizer, which was delicious and the perfect amount for two.Leave room for dessert, the chocolate indulgence is not to be missed.Will drive 2 hr. just to eat there."

"The steak is overpriced, sure, but having someone else cook you a great steak well is going to cost you. The Veal Saltimboca is great, just about licked the plate. Highlight of the night was the service, though. Sean was our waiter but Wolfgang and Bret both helped out and were uber attentive. Only time our needs werent anticipated was when we were ready for the check. Only real downside is everytime Ive been to Oak you see young nebish guys with obvious escorts, kind of a turn off."

"For our midwinter wedding anniversary we had to decided to revisit an old favorite right in the heart of the city. Oak Restaurant on Charleston's timeless Broad Street made our decision easy. Sure we were tempted to sample newer establishments, but, in true native son fashion, tradition trumped temptation. The food was superb. There's a reason the steaks and chops are legendary -- the preparation, the presentation, the taste, and the accompaniments. I'll make this short, whether you are a fifth generation Charlestonian or a first time visitor to the Holy City, make Oak your destination for that quiet evening when the kids are with the sitter and the shorts and sandals are in the hamper. You owe it to yourself to get that kind of meal."

"We were quickly seated when we arrived with reservations. The table was downstairs near the door and we were cold. We were immediately changed to an upstairs table which was quieter and warmer. Our food did not disapoint-the rib eye was cooked perfectly to order and was outstanding.
If you like a livlier table setting, downstairs near the bar or even on the 2nd floor is the place for you! Otherwise, ask for an upstairs table."

"Set in an old bank building on Charleston's historic Broad Street, Oak Steakhouse is a must-eat if you're in the Lowcountry. The steaks are cooked perfectly, and I'd definitely recommend the chef's "Pittsburgh style" finish where he grills the steak, then removes it right before your desired temperature, and sprinkles granulated sugar over the outside and pan sears it to lock in the flavors. The perfect steak. The sides are all a hit as well. I would recommend this steak house to anyone."

"Dined during Charleston restaraunt week. I opted for the squash bisque and the short rib and was not disappointed. Everyone else at the table had the NY strip choice that was good, but not as high-caliber as you would expect from a gourmet steakhouse. The chocolate mousse trumped the over cooked bread pudding by leaps and bounds. Servers were attentive when they were there, but only checked on us once after our initial order to give us the bill. Restaraunt week should be the time to shine and to promote the restaraunt to people who had never been there before and to remind them why they would need to come back. This was not the message the servers had during our visit. Of note, the greeting staff was very friendly and helpful."

"for being one of the most talked about restaurants in charleston, we figured we'd give it a try. we should have got the hint as soon as we walked in the door that this wasn't worth our time or money. we checked in with the hostess, and waited for 20 minutes even though we had a reservation- while we watched two other groups of reservations come in and get seated right away. once we were seated, we were greeted by two separate waiters- neither which took a drink order until 15 minutes after they greeted us. the steak was tough and unseasoned, the salad had no sight of dressing, not even a drizzle, and the bread pudding was hard and crunchy. not worth the money or time!"

"My wife and I went here with high expectations. My wife had the ribs, which she wasn't exactly thrilled with, but the bisque was to die for. We shared a plate of oysters, which were every bit as good as promised. I, on the other hand, had the NY strip, which I felt did merit the hype. Brett's meatballs and the bread pudding were nothing to write home about but still nice. The wine list was extensive, but on the high side.

Our waiter was extremely knowledgable, patient, and friendly. The ambience was nice, but it seemed a bit loud and conversation was tough downstairs. The food is memorable, as is the check. Overall, it was a good experience."

"Awesome experience. Was our third time there and it was perfect. Great food; New York Strip was cooked perfectly medium as requested and melts in your mouth. "We had been eager to try out this restaurant but were frightened off by reports that it was "pricey"...the 3 for $30(we both tried the steak and had plenty!) gave us a good intro and enabled to look at the full menu. my husband and I , both in our 70s, could eg, share a steak dinner and I could get a beet salad...that way this would be the amount of food that we would like to eat and be in our budget. Our friends also are eager to go back for Brett's meatballs.perhaps we could get a meal around that.
All in all it was a very good experience. look forward to having dinner there again."

"The experience was overall very enjoyable. We had a lovely meal with great service from Jarrod who was friendly but not overbearing and obviously knowledgable but not condecending. The other staff that were involved in our night were not quite as unforgettable. The beef carpaccio was a bit bland, although I'm not sure how that was accomplished with the amount of truffle on the plate (a positive). Salt was needed. Our second and third courses were both just perfect. The wine was delicious, a great list, but I wish there were a few more options by the glass. I have been numerous times and always leave with a smile, but just wanted to share some feedback this time. Keep up the good work!"

"Despite the previous reviews, we decided to go to Oak Steakhouse for dinner on a recommendation from a friend. I was not completely disappointed in the experience. We were seated immediately, despite arriving 30 minutes early, and one of the wait staff was very attentive to our table. Unfortunately, this was not our primary waiter. The food was good, but not outstanding as expected...but the roasted mushrooms were excellent and a wonderful side dish to the steak. We were fortunate to have a $50 voucher to help offset the cost of the meal, so the final price was not over the top as I hae read in previous reviews. Overall, this was a good dining experience."

"We got to see Chef Brett McKee in action as we were seated by the kitchen. He pulled a Gordon Ramsey on the waiters at one point, which my husband enjoyed! After that, Chef Brett kept coming by and talking to us and making jokes. He was very nice. Great overall. I would have preferred to be seated on the third floor like we were on our Anniversary, but I guess since it wasn't a special occasion we got seated by the bar/kitchen, which wasn't horrible, it was just noisy."

"This was our 2nd visit to the Oak. My wife and I agreed that we enjoyed the 1st visit better, mostly because of our food selections but also because of the atmosphere. The 1st visit was impromptu and we had no reservations, so we were seated at a booth in the bar area, which turned out to be very entertaining as we got to watch the staff hard a work and we like sitting close to each other while dining. On the 1st visit we both ordered the fillet which was really outstanding. 2nd visit she ordered the salmon and I the NY strip. The salmon wasn't anything special. The NY strip was the best I've had, but wasn't as tender as the fillet. We also ordered the shrimp and lobster mac & cheese. This was ok but really rich."

"Service was impeccable, and my husband, who's a Charleston native, continues to rave about the she-crab soup as being the best he's ever had. Both of us, however, felt our steaks and sides were par at best. I expected better from a restaurant specializing in steaks. I ordered fillet medium rare, but I feel that the outside of the steak was overcooked and the inside didn't have the "buttery" quality that fillet usually has. My husband's steak au poivre seemed to lack in pepper (the poivre part) and the cream sauce just didn't hold a candle to other places we've had it. We ordered potatoes and the fried okra, both of which were good, but for the price we felt there should have been something more "special" about them."

"We chose Oak Steakhouse to celebrate our anniversary due to the reviews it received for "Best Steak in Charleston". I would have to agree! I ordered the filet mignon and it was exquisite. Our waiter was friendly, professional and seemed to appear just when we needed him- no hovering. The only drawback for us was the noise level- which may have just been the group of 12 seated near us who were clearly having a good time- that and being seated directly above the bar. It was quite loud and difficult for us to converse to each other without practically yelling. Since we have six kids at home, this did not lend to a "get away" experience for us. However, we can easily overlook that and would love to return someday."
