The Porterhouse Brewing Co. at Fraunces Tavern, is located in one of the city's most historic landmarks in the downtown Financial District. The Porterhouse offers a large range of small batch and specialty beers, serving traditional American food with a strong Irish influence. Fraunces Tavern has been a part of our city's history since 1762. "A group of us who worked together in the Battery Park area in the 1970's and '80s got together at a restaurant we had dined at many times back then. The memory was severely damaged. The food was uniformly bad across the items our group ordered. A big disapointment."

"You go here to share history with our of town guests and especially to wander upstairs to see the undiscovered world class museum! But don't expect the food to be any better than any other pub, and be prepared for decidedly slow service."

"My family (7 people) had dinner here last Friday evening. It was recommended to us by the hotel that was withing walking distance. The night prior we had dinner at Harry's down the street, which was superb. We had high expectations for this tavern as well but were totally disappointed by the lack of service. The restaurant was 50 % occupied and there was a party going on in a private room adjoining the restaurant. We had to constantly remind our waittress to attend to our table but she seemed more pre occupied with talking to other waitresses. Food was mediocre, some dishes were luke warm. The waitress' and hostess' attitude were less than welcoming. All in all, we would not recommend this "museum/restaurant" to anyone. Overrated by far."

"The service was thoughtful and not intrusive. As history buffs, we thoroughly enjoyed dining in a place so significant to Americans. The ambiance of this tavern where George Washington took leave of his officers gives one a sense of living history. My choice, a chicken pot pie, was perfect: a humble dish perfectly prepared with plenty of moist, tender chicken and peas and carrots that were not overcooked, topped with a thin, delicate crust. My friend's burger was pronounced excellent. Our dessert, although the sweets were very tempting, was a trip through the incredible museum upstairs. If you have time for nothing else, go stand in the room where George Washington stood. You will never forget it."

"Generally very good---although they were out of the award winning stout that they advertised on the table card, and then also out of the fish and chips. The fish didn't bother us so much because we figured that meant that their stuff is very fresh---but we never got to taste. Shephards Pie was very good--and large enough to take home half. Waiters changed middway through the meal which was also a little odd--but she did let us know she was going off shift. We did not get the brunch special with the two bloody mary's---but we will next time---a great deal. And the Irish Trad music in the bar started halfway through our meal (sunday afternoon at 4pm, I think) which we really enjoyed and it added to the historic ambiance!"

"Take a step back into history as you dine where George Washington gave his farewell speech to his troops. Fraunces Tavern is one of those places that if you didn't know what it was; you might pass it by without going inside! The atmosphere is set somewhere in the 18th century with all the modern touches we diners crave. Do take the time to stroll through the entire facility - it seems to go on and on and on! Indulge in a microbrew; taste the finest wine; marvel at the antique bars! Though I would prefer MUZAK of the lighter variety; that is the minor fault of the restaurant ambience! Lunched with two Out of Towners who couldn't get over what a "find" this is!"

"We're New York natives who were seeing a show in the neighborhood and thought we would check out this latest revision of the historic space. Expecting a cheesy tourist joint, we were delighted to find a varied American menu, fresh but old-timey décor and great service.

"I loved the atmosphere and the food, but the service was very slow. Also, we had an extremely loud party next to us (not only loud - but the language they were using was horrible). "Took quite a bit of time for our appetizers to arrive. Onion soup was warm, not hot. Clam chowder was hot and starchy. It had been some time since it had seen a clam. Long wait for our food. Then, halfway through our appetizers, our entrees arrived. The eggs in the eggs benedict might as well have been hardboiled instead of poached and the little bit of Hollendaise sauce was dry and hard. Potatoes were inedible.The Bison Burger was a better choice and with a reasonable charge for its substitution for fries, the brussel sprouts were very good. The service was indifferent at its best. Our servers clearly wished they were anywhere else, but this remarkably important historical place. We decided not to take a chance on dessert."

"We went for the historic ambience, but the brunch was a deal in itself: two courses and 2 drinks for $25. It was wuiet when we got there at 11:30 on a Sunday morning, but was almost full by the time we left--reservations are definitely advised! The corned beef hash was tasty if a bit greasy, and the onion soup was great. Research "blood sausage" before you order the Irish Breakfast. Perfunctory service from our waitress, but the hostess was very friendly and told us a lot about the damage from Sandy--you can see the waterline on the mirror, but otherwise would never know that the whole place had taken on water."

"Our table was ready when we arrived. We had a party of seven and I believe everyone was happy with their meal. Unfortunately the waitstaff left a bit to be desired. We asked twice for ketchup and never got it, and the coffee came to the table cold. The waitress never let us know that a new pot was brewing. Since the tip was already included in our bill there really wasn't much incentive to do a good job. Other than that it was a good experience and I will definitely use Open Table for all my reservations from now on."

"It is the ambiance and history of Fraunces Tavern that is the main attraction. It is a place that has stood since colonial times and has served the rich and famous. The food is good and the service adequate but the building is the main attraction. Lunch on a Thursday was quite busy as to be expected. Any visitor to New York should take the time to visit the financial district and include Fraunces on their itinerary."

"Everything about Fraunces was terrific. We arrived around 4:30 for a 6:15 reservation. The bartender was great, as was the selection of craft beers on tap. The 'tender recommended a very good Oyster Stout. The atmosphere speaks for itself.
Dinner, particularly the "George Washington Pot Pie", was worth a return trip!"

"I loved the atmosphere more than the dining experience.....great interesting beers, nice bartender (very attentive) and good solo musician for a great Irish pub atmosphere. Wish we had stayed in the bar to eat rather than the dining room. It was nice but I liked the bar better."

"We misread the information about brunch so arrived at 11am on a Friday (brunch only at weekends). Waiter offered to ask kitchen if they could make my favourite Eggs Benedict but alas no, they source fresh ingredients at weekend. Shame the chowder not avilable however, the chicken hot pot pie was very tasty instead and filling enough. My daughter (7) enjoyed sitting on the pony skin bench and her child's portion fish 'n' chips was incredible! We all shared a New York Cheesecake which was delicious. English versions don't live up to the real thing! The waiter was charming and the bar staff very friendly. We arrived prior to the office workers so quiet and got busier. We from London, UK and pleased to eat in a place of history."

"The food was really good! The restaurant looks very nice,and I liked the music. My one complaint was that our server took forever to come to our table for everything (we were ready for a long time before she came to take our order, to give us our bill, and to take our checks). It wasn't busy at all in the restaurant section, so I didn't really understand this."

"Fraunces Tavern was an experience. The fact that the Tavern is 250 years old and George Washingon made a speech to his troops at that sight
was special. The dining room we were in was very neat, wood everywhere and it gave you a feeling of a time long ago. The ambiance was authentic and the food was very good. One person in our party raved about the shepards pie. The service was great and the food was very good and reasonably priced. Outside the building, standing on the street is a little hairy, you are in the canyons and there is very little sunlight."

"Second time here - brunch on Saturday was perfect for the kids, and the pancakes were great. Pot pie for hubby was good, and all ages in group from 9 to Grandma were happy. Great deal to go to the museum for free after eating, and the museum folks were passionate about the great history of the building and it's famous visitors. Great spot, would highly recommend."

"This place is awesome, but we went for the Pre Fix brunch that is on their website and they don't do it anymore. We still had a great meal, but they need to take it off the site, as it was the reason we picked the restaurant.
Food was really good though, and service was fantastic!"

"France's Tavern dates back to Revolutionary War times, and is the oldest operating tavern in NYC. Great atmosphere with warm surroundings. Menu features a wide variety of things, not just standard bar food. We had a party of 8 and we all had a great tIme. This is a must see in NYC!"
