The Market House on the Square is a concept built on a few simple concepts. Chef Zumpano uses Fresh, Local ingredients and makes as much as he can from Scratch to create a unique take on Familiar Food that we grew up with, and a fresh look at Dishes we have come to Crave as adults. The James Beard nominee and Chicago native infuses a lighter touch to classics such as Meatloaf, Crab Cakes, and Beef Stroganoff, while bringing a healthier and fresher approach to very popular dishes like Risotto, Ginger Steamed Salmon and the very unique “Burger, No Bun."

"We previously had dined at Market House and had enjoyed our food. That was not the case in this instance. The turkey on the Van Doren Club was dry and the fish on the fish tacos was fishy. The donuts were great, however. Our server was very attentive and helpful. I have no complaints in that respect."

"I was a frequent visitor to South Gate before it became the Market House. I was pleased to see that Market House retained many of the outstanding servers. Food was very good and the presentation was outstanding. I like the lighter paint and the way the Market House interiour has become brighter. The candy bar desert was a hit with our group."

"We went there as a group of 8 to celebrate my son's high school graduation. Overall, it was a perfect choice and the food was fantastic. The portions were a bit uneven, though. The beef stroganoff required a doggie bag but the mahi mahi special was particularly small. Our waitress seemed quite green and could've been more attentive. But these are certainly forgivable things and did not diminish the fact that the good was great as well as the atmosphere. The $2 mini desserts are a nice way to satisfy a sweet craving after the meal. And we all enjoyed the black olive tapenade and white bean hummus served with the bread basket."

"Very nice menu, good food and pleasant, cordial service in a very nice surround. Unless they do something about the acoustics, however, we will not return; all four in our party found the noise level prohibitive.
Because conversation and company is the reason we go out, we even booked on the early side; but by 7:15, the noise level was too much. There was no going around it and we left early with throats and ears hurting. Like anyone, we enjoy a lively restaurant but we do not enjoy having to struggle to speak or be heard. What otherwise is the point of a meal out with friends?
We do so hope they do something about the acoustics--ceiling, curtains, floors--any amendment would be an improvement. We would like to come back ."

"I enjoyed my whitefish served on a bed of mashed cauliflower. My husband ordered the salmon which was done to perfection and served with freshly asparagus. YUM! Restaurant is quaintly tucked away in Lake Forest. We were staying at Great Lakes Naval Training Center and the location was a short 10-minute drive from there."

"They have taken over an old establishment - the inside bar has a very local english pub feel yet the patio has a great little "side street" feel with a gorgeous old tree and wonderful ambiance. Probably one of the best places to sit outside in the spring/summer/fall. The food ranges from upscale (tuna tartare) to modernized pub fare (stroganoff with homemade noodles). The wine list quite notably did not have any of the usual brands - instead, it listed unique wines that were lesser known and likely carefully selected. Anyone whose white special is an Albarino gets my vote, and they did well on the Pinot Noir which is not easy. The cake doughnuts were a fun, nice touch at the end, great for sharing."

"I thought a restaurant that featured outdoor dining would be just the spot to celebrate my friend's birthday. We were fortunate that the weather cooperated. We enjoyed a lovely table in the sun, where we received good service and outstanding salads made with fresh ingredients. We even were served a scrumptious birthday brownie. Beautiful weather and an excellent restaurant contributed to make our lunch perfect!"

"We had a delicous meal at Market House. I started with the crab cake. It looked small upon arrival, but when it bit in I was impressed as it was all crab meat and very little filler..worth the price. I then had the white fish and it was cooked to prefection. My husband had the amedei salad and he said it was the best salad ever. He had the salmon for dinner and loved it."

"The meal for the most part was great. We each started the meal with a , crisp and tasty spring green salad with goat cheese, spiced almonds and green beans started the meal, shared an exceptionally large mussels appetizer which included 25-30 pieces/shells in a pleasantly mild onion, garlic and wine broth. We opted to share the beef stroganoff which was some odd version of shredded braised beef with non-tasting noodles on top of a flavorless puddle of broth. Not the traditional presentation I was expecting, perhaps this is the new trend in preparation? I even re-read the menu, thinking I missed the description, but there was no indication to expect anything other than a traditional beef stroganoff."

"We sat down ordered drinks, Martini's came with the glass 3/4 full. Ordered a hamburger and a pork chop (that was recommended) for 28.00. Ordered it medium cam to the table so dry was not edible we told the server (who was very sweet) she told the manager who said "I will let the chef know" That was it couldn't eat it and they never offered to get us another one. Same exact story with the hamburger. Big dissappointment all the way around. The mussels appetizer was good...but...WE WON'T BE BACK!"

"I took my sister in law to lunch for her birthday on Saturday. I had had a previous experience with this place when they did not honor another birthday. I expressed this after I made the reservation and they certainly made up for the time they forgot the birthday. "The back room was quieter and we could have a conversation although the noisy crowd in the bar area in the front room did interrupt our conversation at times. It was a fun group and they appeared to be having fun though. The food was very good as was the service."

"My father and I and a friend enjoyed a delightful lunch at the Market House. We sat in the main dining room, in a banquette with a full view of the room. We all ordered different things and each item was delicious. We had fish tacos, whitefish a salad and a crab cake. all were hot, nicely plated and tasty.
I personally don't like the trend of the gigantic plate/bowl thing that most food comes in these days. It is unwieldy and pretentious and is hard to fit on the table. I would much prefer a dinner plate, and especially a cup for soup, but that is a minor thing.
The new look of the Market House is crisp and clubby. Beautiful panelling gives the room a warm, rich feeling. The new owners have taken the old Southgate well in hand."

"Our party of 4 had lunch. We were immediately seated and the waiter (Fabian) was very knowledgable about the menu. Two of us had the soup of the day (beef & veg.) which was delicious. The Reuben and pulled pork sandwiches were very good as well. All over a very enjoyable meal. We will certainly return again."

"Horrible service. Food came out slow. Appetizer never arrived and waiter practically yanked the bill out of my hand as if we were holding him up and it was only 9 p.m. This restaurant replaced an absolute landmark restaurant in Lake Forest and better consider providing better friendlier service if they expect to be held up to the Lake Forest standard - they won't cut it on food alone!"
