The Seattle Times, August 26th 2010: So thoroughly have the three Varchetta brothers re-imagined the relocated Mamma Melina their own mother would hardly recognize the place even though that's her name above the door.
The new Mamma Melina, occupying the south end of the Corydon Apartments near University Village, has more in common with the Varchetta's stylish Barolo downtown.
On a summer day you'd think it was Rodeo Drive and not the Burke-Gilman Trail that runs alongside the broad front patio. Amid shallow pools holding silver globes that glint in the sun, beautiful people in oversized sunglasses sip wine on thickly cushioned sofas or sup on house-made pasta under canvas umbrellas at white-clothed tables.Price points are moderate and the cooking is assured.

"Normally, this is one of our go-to places for drinks/dinner on a Friday night but after our last visit, we won't be returning. Every plate that made its way to our table (except for dessert) was overcooked. The calamari was rubbery and tough (the sauces were up to them normal deliciousness) but really, no amount of good sauce can mask overcooked calamari. My pasta was so overcooked, it was dry and hard. My husband's pasta was fine but the meatballs had dried out and were totally overcooked. We were really disappointed. We have been going to Mamma Melina since it was in its old location and we have always loved it, so this experience was really disappointing for us."

"Our family gathered together for Mother's Day for the first time in twenty years.
Three generations together.
Food was fantastic, service--incredible!!! We had many delicious courses!
Got the check--shock! It was about half of what I expected this FEAST, this "Big NIght" experience, to be.
When I interviedwed Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward, it was a passing reference to Mamma Melina that broke the ice. He, famously, had dined there three times in five days-- And that man KNEW Italian.!!!
Good to have Mamma's packed on the night before M Day--our family celebrates a day before or a day after. Thanksgiving Dinner will be at our son and "daughter's" home, but we will get together the night before....at Mamma Melina's!

"Loved our experience eating here on Friday night May 10. Happy hour wine, then a nice outdoor table in the sunshine. Knowledgeable waitress about the menu's gluten free options. No guff when wanting to substitute prosciutto for ham on a pizza. Romantic and fun and loud and will be back again."

"The restaurant has an open yet intimate feel, beautiful lighting and very creative placement of artwork . The service was exceptional. We each had 2 different cocktails which were perfectly made. The crab salad was fantastic and the butter lettuce salad was great. The entrees and dessert were just perfect. I want to keep going back to try everything on the menu!"

"Was a fan of Mamma Melina's when they were in their restaurant off of Roosevelt, but this was my first time at their new swankier locale. We brought my mom here for her birthday and had a table in the back...where the decor is nice, but lighting is dim and "romantic" and not the easiest to read the menus by. I'd love to come back later in summer and sit on their patio though! My sister and husband have a few dietary restrictions and our waitress was Very accommodating to requests and even made suggestions for improvements to their meals. Everyone loved what they ordered (which is an accomplishment when it comes to my younger sister) and practically licked the plates clean. Don't forget dessert! I think the tiramisu made my mom's birthday :)"

"The food did not taste as wonderful as when Mamma Melinas was under the Seven Gables theatre on 45th but still good. The four of us enjoyed our dishes..though none were standouts. A good place to go if you don't feel like cooking and want to hang out in a really loud restaurant (we ate outside-quiter). The wait staff was superb."

"We can't say enough good things about this place. My husband had our first date there 17 years ago and we have returned every year on the same day! The restaurant has generously reserved us a lovely table and provided a lovely dessert at the end of our meal.

I loved my September lunch and have been back for lunch and dinner probably 15+ times and everyone I bring there loves everything about it. Try it once and you will be hooked."

"There were four of us in a booth. A little tight but nice configuration. Our waiter was outstanding! Very friendly and very helpful and great personality. Food was very good. I love the wide open feel of the restaurant and the high ceilings.
Most of all, love the free easy parking. Four of us drove so nice not to have to hassle with parking."

"The food was fine. The service was fine. The timing was terrible. Our cocktails, our starter course, our salads, and our entrees all arrived withing moments of eachother. This was not a case of the server trying to rush us to turn the table. Rather, the kitchen just either doesn't know or doesn't care about timing a dinner. We watched the same thing happen at tables around us. Good service does not always mean fast service."

"truly outstanding restaurant near the Univ. Village. Roberto the owner greated us and made sure we had a great dining experience. Casey our waiter was very attentive and took care of us. The four of us ordered six appetizers, four entrees and six desserts. With the Dining around Seattle promotion going on, the place was full yet our orders came out well paced, hot, beautifully presented and delicious. We loved the calamari appie, salmon and shrimp bowtie pasta, and tortino bread pudding the most...but everything was GREAT!"

"We had an office lunch for 11 recently and thoroughly enjoyed our experience. The menu is diverse, so everyone found something wonderful. The service was attentive, and we took advantage of the 3 for $15 luncheon specials which were awesome!"

"Our meal was very good and the service was great. We dined early in the eveing (before 6:00pm)and the restuarant was just getting going. It was a Valentine's dinner although we ordered off the regular menu. The osso bucco was outstanding....some of best I've ever experienced. We thought the Valentine dinner special was a bit over priced.
What seems to be missing here is more of the quaint artwork, cozyness and ambience that your'd typically find in an italian restuarant named Mama Melina's. All in all it was just fine though."

"Food quality and service were exceptional. Our waitress was always alert and attentive to our needs. We had the specials, and were amazed by the complexity of the ingredients and yet simple presentation of our dishes. We will definitely come back."

"The restaurant really made my husband’s 50th Birthday an enjoyable experience for all our family. The waitress was wonderful, attentive, polite and very accommodating. She even brought my niece a glass of ginger ale to drink when we all had champagne without being asked to. They let me bring my own cake and kept it out of the way, cut it up and served it with no issues. Accommodating 14 people isn’t always easy but we had a great table and sat down immediately. Great experience!"

"High expectations and low results. Ignoring the mess at check in our food was less than expected. The shrimp risotto was bland and the shrimp itself overcooked and tough. The gnocchi was mushy. My pasta rustica was passable though one could hardly taste any gorgonzola. Perhaps it was a bad night but with other restaurants in the que I probably won't be back."

I wish this was one of those great reviews but unfortunately it’s just the opposite. We chose to celebrate my birthday at Mama Melina’s because it had good reviews however it was the service that night to ruined our evening for me and all my guests.
It was his (bald guy) cocky attitude all night long that make the night very unpleasant. When asked if lamb was fresh, his response was “we don’t kill lamb in the back every night”. When my guest asked if cheese cake was made with real cheese, his response was “no one has ever asked me that walked away and shook his head back and forth as if we were bothering him with our food questions. There is more to tell you but not enough space to write it here..."

"Many years ago I had eaten at its location at 50th and Roosevelt and had been disappointed. However, based on recommendations I decided to try this restaurant again along with three friends. I am glad I did. The food was very good. The server was attentive, cheerful and knowledgeable. The wine list was fairly extensive. I had a simple green salad that was nicely dressed and osso bucco which was tender and tasty. The profiteroles for dessert were a perfect end to a great meal. We shared a bottle of sangiovese, which was reasonably priced, full bodied and smooth. One negative for all of us was the noise level. However, it was a Friday night and the crowd was quite energetic. I plan to try it on another evening to see it if is quieter."
