PicNic Market & Cafe

PicNic Market & Cafe is an Upper Westside neighborhood Alsatian Bistro serving what Chef Proprietaire Jean Luc Kieffer calls “nostalgically French cuisine with a twist.” Alsatian Classics like Choucroute, Tarte Flambe & Spaetzle reflect Kieffer's roots as well as French Classics - Cassoulet, Duck Confit, Beef Bourguignon, Coq au Vin and Cheese Souffle. Chef Kieffer presents these dishes with a modern elegance. He is very selective in the ingredients he uses and works closely with many of the farmers from the Greenmarket. The menu encompasses seasonal ingredients with weekly deliveries from Bradley Farms (organic) in New Paltz New York. The wine list is composed of small boutique vineyards with some organic offerings and a large selection of by the glass.

"The food was actually quite good, but they couldn't manage to get 3 entrees out at the same time, 2 came then a wait for the third, then side dishes even later..at the prices they charge they should be able to manage food delivery better.."

"good food well served in a casual setting. Nothing to write home about among all the choices in NYC, but a good value, conveniently located and pleasant atmosphere."

"Had steak au poivre, but had ordered hanger steak with shallot sauce. Meat was good and well cooked--MR. Initially ordered Languedoc red wine, but it was a pinot noir, so sent it back. SA cab sauv wasn't good, so 2nd glass was cab sauv from CA, which was only OK. Must get decent French red wine by the glass & bottle. Ratatouille unacceptable--canned tomatoes and sliced zucchini, maybe something else, but couldn't see it; only taste was tomato. Kale very undercooked & poorly prepared--inedible. Wife's paella too spicy. Waitress fair, but unfriendly; ignored us completely when we left. Not to say good night and thank us for coming is rude. Just nothing at all. Servers a bit clumsy. Seems like staff is new and not trained at all."

"My favorite neighborhood spot. The food is always a notch better than the other French or pseudo-French places in the area, and it's quiet enough for a proper conversation. A nice wine list, and a very nice place for morning coffee and a brioche. Dinner is always a bit more expensive than I remember, but worth it."
