'Too much is so good, you can't stop eating it. The tandoor-baked breads are not mere swabs for sauce but could be eaten, and enjoyed, on their own; the naan with cilantro and rock salt is terrific, as is the kulcha richly stuffed with minced lamb. Masala Art offers combinations you don't see often around here, but even its more familiar dishes can be revelations. Consider its samosas. They're flakier than a lot of the competition, and their filling of peas, potatoes and sweet raisins tastes fresher, too. A burst of cardamom in every bite helps. In the same vein, soft logs of minced lamb pulse with heat from jalapeno peppers, a shock offset with breezy mint. "Having eaten Indian food worldwide, it’s hard to match in DC. Our quest was to test the best Indian restaurants. We had very good appetizers: Aloo Tikki Chaat and Aloo aur Pyaz ki Bhaji (though sauces were bland). Then Adraki Lamb, Murgh Tikka Masala, Baingan Bharta, and Nan with rock salt. While well presented and cooked, the lamb was exceedingly salty. The rice was over-salted and the Nan added insult to injury. The lamb was inedible, and the waiter was gracious to offer a replacement However, after this, the saltiness of the other dishes was off putting. The Murgh Tikka Masala resembled chunks of chicken in a salty can of tomato soup. The waiter served us rice pudding (very nice) to make up for the food. But overall very disappointing."

"The food is great, the room is attractive, the crowd is mixed and low-key, and the prices are reasonable. A relief after so many contrived menus that disappoint. If I lived closer I would be a regular. As it is, we eat here whenever we're in the Washington metro area."

"We've eaten at Masala Art several times but came away disappointed after this meal. In the past, the service has been slow but the food was well worth the wait. This time, the service was still slow (they always seem to have trouble coping with a busy night) but we wished we had eaten elsewhere. Lamb Kabab appetizer was nothing special (skip it). The Tandoori Salmon was awful--way over salted and seasoned for what should be a straightforward dish. Our other main course was not bad but nothing to rave about either. Nan was fine and delicious."

"My wife and I has visited Marsala Art on several occasions and we have never been disappointed. The food is always excellent and the staff are courteous, efficient and friendly. Having grown up with Indian food in East Africa, I can safely say that this is the best Indian food I have eaten in DC. I always recommend the restaurant to friends and I am always happy to take visitors and family friends there. I am a "foodie" and although I am quite a good Indian cook myself since finding Marsala Art, I now prefer to dine there than cook myself. This restaurant is genuinely a neighborhood gem and I fully recommend anybody who has not been there to try it."

"Masala art is a truly good indian restaurant. it is not great, dc does not possess a great indian restaurant no matter how much people rave about rasika. Masala art in my opinion is significantly cheaper and just as good as rasika. Both rasikas have better ambiance, but the price tag to go along with it.
My suggestion is if you are eating at Masala Art, is to get the kabobs, papri chat for appetizers, the dahl, chicken tikka masala and lamb for main courses.
I have been here multiple times and not been disappointed."

"Love the "half price wine" nights (M-Th). The food here is some of the best Indian food I've ever eaten, and it's not your "run of the mill" type of food you can find just about anywhere. This is Northern Indian at its best. Add to that a lovely restaurant and truly excellent service, and I plan to continue to dine here as often as possible. What a lovely experience."

"We took guests to eat at what we consider to be one of the best local Indian restaurants. The food, as always, was excellent. On this occasion the service was not excellent - which is unusual but we understand that this happens on occasion. The ambiance at Masala Art needs to be improved. The back portion of the restaurant is dark and crowded - perhaps subtle lighting or table reconfiguration is all that is needed. Although the front portion is 'lighter' it too leaves the diner with the impression that you are sitting in the passage way. The only table - for only a larger party - that is out of a walk-way is the one at the window in front."

"first time. awesome breads. mediocre chai masala. great service. clean decor. very spicy entrees. make sure you communicate with staff before ordering. the rice sides were great with the entrees . they weren't your typical white rice. they were golden in color with much flavor. desserts were sparing in quantity. i ordered three desserts to fill my single dessert box in my tummy. they were tasty but small. if you haven't been there , it's worth the try, especially if you live in the neighborhood. and the staff will treat you well."

"What is not to love about Masala Art? My only complaint is that I do not live closer to it. The sauces on every dish are rich and flavorful. There is heat, but it is not for heat's sake. The naan's are spectacular and I've never had an appetizer I didn't like."

The kitchen had a little trouble keeping the buffet replenished, with so many people dining simultaneously.

"A lovely quiet lunch at Masala Art on a Saturday. We have recently "discovered" the fabulous Murg Tikka Kali Mirch (chicken breast marinated in low fat yogurt and crushed black pepper) which is served in beautiful chunks that have been perfectly marinated and cooked. That plus the chicken tikka in spinach sauce provided not only a wonderful lunch, but enough leftovers to take home for another meal. The spices in all of the dishes at Masala Art are always perfect - if only we could nail it every time in our home kitchen!"

"Masala Art is my favorite Indian restaurant . Its cilantro naan is incredible, andthe butter chicken is the best in the city. They fod tends not to be that spicy, but you can ask for extra spices. We also love the somosas and the tandoori dishes are good as well. Half price bottles of wine Sunday-Thursday. It has a decent selection of vegetarian dishes although not as wide a choice as some places. The service is particularly good; we are regulars but it adds up to only a few times a year (along with take out). This last visit was for my daughter's eighteenth birthday, and they gave us all celebratory drinks (lassies for the 18-year olds and champagne for the over-21 crowd as well as dessert."

"This is a nice Indian restaurant at Tenley Circle, a step above what I anticipated just seeing it from the outside. The restaurant itself has a cleaner, more modern look -- no kitschy design. The food was very good -- I would give it a 3.5 and might upgrade it once I have a chance to try it out a few more times. While not the cutting edge menu of a Raska, what I had was well prepared, and it is moderately priced, so I will definitely return here. Service was friendly and efficient and the noise level permitted conversation at the table -- a real plus."

"The buffet was a very nice surprise as the flavors were pronounced, but not overwhelming. It appears that the kitchen prepares the food in small batches so that it does not suffer from spending too much time on the steam table."

"I'm a regular at Masala Art and have never had a bad meal there. The food is always fresh, the flavors are interesting, the spice level is good (a little hotter than some other Indian restaurants), and the menu changes periodically, keeping it interesting. They also have a reasonable wine list with a selection of wines by the glass. I feel like the entire staff cares about making your meal a good experience, and I always feel welcome there. I highly recommend Masala Art."
