Merchant's Restaurant
Located downtown in a historic building on the corner of Broadway and
4th Avenue, Merchants restaurant has stood the test of time by remaining one of the most well known restaurants in Nashville.
The causal, street level Bistro is lively and spirited with it's black and white motif and great view. It’s a popular spot for lunch and often attracts many locals before or after any downtown event. The food is thoughtful, well-crafted and affordable. The bistro also features a creative bar program and is open until midnight on weekdays and 2 a.m. on weekends.
On the second floor, Merchants restaurant features fine dining by Chef Jason Brumm, known for his playful yet refined take on southern cuisine. The dining room is open seven days a week from 5pm - 10pm.

"Glad to have used Open Table to secure a table at the street level (casual) dining area before a concert at the Ryman. It was busy with diners and bar business. Soup and salads were fresh, tasty, and generous.. Servers were attentive refilling drinks. Our table provided a view of Broadway and all the foot traffic was entertaining."

"I like this place a lot. It's right on the corner of 4th and Broadway. It's a lively location. It's in the heart of downtown and gets a lot of business people at lunch time. It can get quite busy. The service if friendly, helpful and attentive. I had the blackened tilapia with a side of the pimento cheese grits. The grits were outstanding. The rum blondie with pecan ice cream for desert was very sweet and rich. This place is a bit on the pricey side, however that seems to result in a more well-heeled clientele for being in the middle of the honky tonk, tourist scene."

"We were early (about 45 minutes) for our reservation so went to the bar for a drink. After waiting for about 10 minutes to order a drink, we finally asked a manager as none of the 3 of the bartenders would respond to our requests. About 1/2 hour after our reservation time, I went to the hostess stand. Apparently they had forgotten about us and then seated us right away. Once seated and eating the rest of evening of fine. It just took a while to get there."

We knew we were only going to have one dinner in Nashville, so we debated for a while before settling on Merchant's. It ended up being a good call.
Its location right on the corner of Main St. and 4th Ave S. was terrific -- right in the middle of all the action. The classy, yet relaxed feel of the restaurant was exactly what we wanted. It didn't feel like we were in loud and overcrowded tourist spot, but we still felt part of the excitement around us, as we could look out onto the street to see everyone passing by.
The food was very good. We had the duck fat tots (solid, slightly saltier than reg. tots). I also enjoyed my soup & sammy. My girlfriend liked her fish tacos."

"I took my fiancé there before a concert and we had an amazing time. The good was outstanding and I couldn't take more than two sips of water before someone was coming around to refill it. Great time, I would highly recommend the upstairs part of the restaurant if you are looking for a romantic setting."

"WE had a great evening. We ate at the first floor bistro and were seated at the window. Great place to sit because Broadway Street is a great people watching place. Our waitress was at the table within minutes bringing us their great popcorn and took a drink order. We ordered the duck fat tator tots to start off and they were amazing. The blackened tilapia was excellent, cooked perfect and the sweet potato hash was a perfect match. The rib eye steak was cooked perfectly as well. Had a great evening and will return the next time we are in Nashville."

"We had a late lunch before attending an event downtown. The staff was attentive and friendly. The food was good, though the flat iron steak was a little over cooked. Ordered the deviled eggs as an appetizer and they were awesome with the little pickle on the bottom! Since we could only make reservations downstairs before 5pm, we will return in the very near future to experience the upstairs menu. Overall the dining experience was a good one."

"Snooty. When reservation made we were not informed main dining area (upstairs) would be closed to private party. Had to eat in bar. Large amount of foot traffic, noise level from music to the point a customer walked by with fingers in ear. The employees (other than our waiter) act as if they doing favors other than taking care of you. Hostesses are just rude. act as if customers are simpletons. This place will not miss my money. They will miss my recommendations that I have given freely in the past. Waiter extremely apologetic. I wish them well. I know it is a "Broadway" bar disguised as a restaurant, but upstairs is the best part of it."

"Merchants is located right on broadway in the heart of everything. It's a really cool restaurant that probably has been there a long time. Very pretty old architecture. They start you out with popcorn and I love popcorn. The menu us interesting, very southern. I had the Greek salad with chicken and I very much enjoyed it. The fried green tomatoes were a good appetizer."

"Had dinner before Bon Jovi concert. Very neat decor, lots of good people watching, VERY busy. The Southern fry appetizer was really good (probably not real healthy), chicken ceasar and brisket were good. Service was very good and staff/management very friendly. Must make resrvations on busy night (ask for window seat downstairs)!!

"We were given one of the worst seats in the restaurant....right by the front door. It was very cold outside and every time the door opened, inside as well. And the noise level was beyond belief. I supposed we should have booked the upstairs instead of the Bistro but were short on time due to attending a concert that evening.
I was very disappointed in the Talapia I was served. It tasted extremely "fishy"...something that just doesn't happen when Talapia is prepared properly.
I've eaten at Merchants numerous times and the food was always excellent. Maybe they changed chefs?"

"Loved the food and table service. The only issue I had is that I had a reservation at 6:45 and didn't get seated until 7:30. I had heard from some friends that they are bad about that so I was prepared to wait, I suggest you be too! Without a reservation you'll be waiting over an hour so it's still better than going in without one."

"First time at Merchants this past weekend, and we'll definitely be back! They have 2 dining spaces, each with it's own menu. We ate downstairs in the bistro, and it was great! Energetic vibe, friendly staff, unique cocktails, and great food! Reservations definitely recommended. MUST try the duck fat tater tots - YUM! The fish tacos were delicious, and the jambalaya was too. Fun place for a date or a group of friends. Cool decor, as it's in an old pharmacy and they did a great job of keeping the original tile and woodwork. Definitely a "thumbs up"!"

"Merchants is a wonderful restaurant in the heart of the country music downtown scene. The food is great and duck fat tater tots are amazing. The cocktails are really special and feature many local liquors. Sitting downstairs is a little noisy but really fun because you still feel very much a part of the action. Reservations on the weekend are a must even if just for lunch. Love this place!"

"The food was delicious. We had the trout and scallops. We were very disappointed in the ambiance and service. The upstairs dining room was boring atmosphere and lacked any decor imagination....very ordinary. Waitress was nice but service was slow. Had to ask about drinks when both orders never showed up. I would eat from more casual menu downstairs if we ever went back."

"I would love to give this restaurant a better score but there were just too many things wrong from the start. which was 7:45 - that's not late. First, they could not made a Sidecar, which is on the menu, because they were out of one, un-named, ingredient. Ok, not a big deal. Moving on - well they were out of most of the appetizers too - no scallops, just house or Cesear's salad. Ok moving on to entrees - you got it - no fish, basically just the fillet and a strip. They were even out of asparagus - only had brussel sprouts - really? Dessert of more (or less) of the same - only 3 choices. What we had was good. The service staff was more embarrassed than anything. But for the prices paid this was amateur."

"Yum, that's the best way to describe it! Everything my wife and I had exceeded our expectations. The bacon and eggs appetizer was unique and delicious. The Steak Tartar was perfect. I had to try the Duck Fat Fries. The name alone enticed me. I don't usually eat French fries with steak, but the fries were well worth the divergence for veggies. We booked our reservation the same day and had to wait to for a 10:00 pm dining time and it was certainly worth it. Fresh, prompt, friendly, who can ask for anything more."

"Only complaint I have, and this is worthy, in my opinion. Alcohol. WAY, WAY too expensive for a single glass of wine, or a single cocktail. 30%-40% too much. Also, ordered an Absolute Vodka Collins...10 bucks...tasted like koolaid. No hint of vodka at all, much less Absolute. My wife's wine, just a standard red zinfandel? 10 bucks. (But, it was good wine!)
With that being said...the food was FANTASTIC! Arrived early for our reservation, and yet seating within minutes. Top-drawer service and overall a truly great evening. Would definitely recommend it and will MOST DEFINITELY go back!"

"We were told to come to Merchant's for their parking & were deliciously surprised by how good the food was! We came at 4:45pm for 7pm game on a Friday night and the place was packed by 5:30pm. Appetizers: fried green tomatoes were okay, but the duck fat tater tots were AWESOME! Half an order is definitely plenty for two. My wife got the fish tacos, which are very popular for a reason. And the smoked brisket was the best I've had in town so far. Yummy!
As far as parking goes, it couldn't be a better location or more convenient: the entrance is on Broadway right before 4th Ave S, and if you come at 5pm it is complimentary. The valets go home at about 11pm, which is plenty of time for a regular 7pm Predators game. And it's only a block away"
