Nobu Fifty Seven
Nobu Fifty Seven, the first uptown New York location for legendary chef Nobu Matsuhisa, opened to much anticipation in the summer of 2005. Nobu's co-owners are his longtime partners: renowned restaurateur Drew Nieporent, Oscar-winning actor Robert De Niro, Meir Teper, and Nobu managing partner Richie Notar. The restaurant showcases Nobu's signature new style Japanese cuisine with classic dishes such as Tiradito Nobu Style and Black Cod with Miso and the hibachi table. The restaurant received three stars from the New York Times.
Designed by David Rockwell, Nobu Fifty Seven evokes fluidity and the imagery of an Asian river with curves and details of abalone shell chandeliers, sliced bamboo stalks in terrazzo tiles, scorched ash tables and Japanese quilt fabric. Sake barrels imported from Japan tower over the first floor bar counter as diners make way to the upstairs dining room. Burnished woods, rich hues and soft lighting create an ambiance of elegance and refinement.

"I always try to go to Nobu 57 when I´m in NY. The food is always perfect. The yellow fish with jalapeño and the black cod fish where special that last time. It´s a place that you MUST go!"

"Finally gave in and made reservations for my wife's birthday with lofty expectations and an open wallet. Atmosphere reminded me of a slightly classier version of a PF Changs. Our waiter was eager to help, but knowledge of Japanese food was limited. Menu is structured quite oddly. A few appeling items leaped off the menu including toro tartate with caviar, cold tofu with uni, and uni tempura, while the black cod and lobster tacos seemed like must orders. Only food in the realm of reasonable pricing is the sushi, which is due to average quality.Few pages of unimpressive wine and beer selection is limited to $9 Asahi. Night was not about prices but all the money in the world couldn't change a gaijin menu of average Japanese food. Disappointed."

"We were very disappointed: the food was great but when we arrived for our reservation at 10 p.m. they told us already at the front desk that the kitchen will close in 10 minutes and that we should choose very quickly. The food came all together and after an hour everything was done. They also started to clean the spot so it was an hectic atmosphere and not the special experience we expected. So, please don't offer reservations so late when you can't handle it."

"I didn't want to believe the other reviews were true. But the arrogance of the managment and wait staff was so disappointing. If you want to keep the menu understated, then be willing and prepared as a wait staff to help us make our selections in a way that shows patience and is understandable to the customer. How embarrassing to be turned over to the manager b/c our waiter didn't want to "deal" with us. Why did I even leave a tip? What a regret. And what an embarrassment to me who took friends there for a special occasion. And to top all of that... the food wasn't even good. I will never ever go back."

"The sushi was good but expensive as things go. In this day and age there are plenty of places with a better selection of sushi at better prices. The cooked black cod was excellent. The service was so so. I kept on having to stop wait staff to ask for things as my waiter disappeared after taking the order. The restaurant was far better in the past."

"My wife and I were going to see Wicked. Nobu West was the perfect spot for an early dinner reservation. Outstanding service with a delicious cuisine. Nobu doesn't just offer traditional sushi, it's blend of Asian fusion gives the patron a lot if choices. Spectacular Mixed drink menu makes this a hot spot for before and after shows."

"We had lunch there this past week. Crowded, loud and so tightly packed it was difficult to walk between tables. Drinks took a long time and all three main dishes were brought 10 to 15 minutes apart. My Son almost finished his Bento Box before my sushi arrived. My wife's chicken came after we had both eaten and only after threatening to cancel the order and leave."

"It feels like the restaurant and the chain is becoming way too commercial, and this reflects on the food and the lack of attention to detail. The edamame was overdone, they one serve one kind of hot sake, which is actually the worse sake you can find in Japan (coming from someone who lived for yrs in Japan) and the overall experience is much better if you do a walk in and sit at the bar downstairs rather than the main dining room upstairs."

"There's a reason Nobu is so popular. The food is simply the best and most creative Japanese you can find. Service was competent, but our server had a very heavy Chinese accent and we could not understand her much of the time over the noise in the room. But the food just trumps everything else. Whether in LA, or Downtown or on 57, Nobu is a wonderful dining experience."

"We were a party of three celebrating my 14 year old's birthday for brunch at 1:45 pm. Was surprised to see so many young children squirming all over the tables. While quiet and cute it seemed out of place that the room was dominated by families with young kids. The food was fantastic especially the appetizers (eg, rock shrimp, yellowtail jalapeño,and miso black cod.) The sushi was good but only the salmon and the Japanese red snapper seemed special. The tuna was as good as can be found anywhere. After sitting down with appetizers and drinks after 30 minutes was informed by the friendly and attentive waiter that we needed to put in our order as the kitchen would close in 20 minutes! I nearly collapsed when seeing my bill for $367 BEFORE tip!"

"We arrived early and had a drink in the bar area. The drinks were wonderful as was the service. From there it only got better. We moved upstairs to the dining area where the food and the service were outstanding. I will definitely come back, even if it's just for cocktails."

"It was my third time there and I found a different mood. As always I asked for a US$120 Chefs Choice Menu, was my wife birthday and her first time there, and was a disappointed experience for both. The plates was not so creative, one of them was made with chicken... on a most famous japonese restaurant of the world?!?! And the dessert had everything that my wife doesn't like, with beer and mixing salt and sweet food. I am sure that was just a bad moment from the chef, or a bad service, but I am not sure if I will back again."

"This was our first time at Nobu 57. The yellowtail with jalapeno was outstanding, as was the fluke "cold dish" recommended by the waiter. Next we had tempura rock shrimp that had the best pure shrimp taste I've had in years. The black cod miso was sublime. The nigiri we ordered was good, but not great. The Japanese snapper was over seasoned. Still, it was a memorable meal."

"This place never disappoints. We go through all the small plates each time we go to change things up. This time we had the tuna tataki salad (dont think they call it that, but thats what it is); the always famous and perfectly cooked miso cod and ended with sushi and bento box for dessert. Had to keep asking for refills for water and tea which doesnt usually happen so we'll let that pass this time."

"I don't get to Nobu 57 much, but when I do it's all about the black cod for me, which is always plentiful and delicious -- as it was this time, too. The miso soup was also delightful. My husband had the squash "pasta" and enjoyed it -- it was tender and flavorful -- but it also came with a bit of a spicy kick that was not otherwise advertised. We were sorry that the restaurant was out of its own ice cream, but the imported ones I enjoyed as well. The service is terrific and you're really made to feel taken care of. Absolutely worth it!"
