"The American is known as a very upscale and stiff restaurant. This bruch was a departure from that expectation. The atmosphere was relaxed and fun. There was piano music on the background. Very much a wonderful experience!"

"Great food, great service, great view! The American restaurant is a MUST stop in Kansas City. The place has an old time classy feel. The decor is beautiful and the scenic view of the city amazing! The food is a treat for the eyes and palette. If the antelope is on the menu, get it, it was superb! It was tender and complimented by the chorizo. Excellent presentation and flavors. This place does not disappoint. I've frequented top restaurants in Vegas, D.C., And Manhattan. This place competes with the best of them. Two more notes: the service is impeccable and the live entertainment a treat. We visited on a Saturday night and had a great time. CHEERS!"

"Went last year for our anniversary, returned this year because our experience last year was amazing. This time we were disappointed. We have some food restrictions, and last time, advanced preparations were made so that we had lots of options and the evening and food were fantastic. This time, with almost a month's advance notice, no effort had been made for us. My wife eats only vegan, and she was left on her own to scrape together a meal from the sides of other offerings, and even then the portion sizes were miniscule and did not justify the high price tag. We left feeling cheated AND we were still hungry! Additionally, the dining room was absolutely freezing."

"As this restaurant had recently changed chefs, our meal had a few glitches. Sadly, the return diners that accompanied us sent a couple of courses back and were greeted graciously with other choices and other accommodations that worked very nicely. Service was impeccable. Our seats afforded us a beautiful view of downtown."

"I had a business associate come in town from the east coast. Neither he nor I had been to the American Restaurant. We were very impressed with the amazing view of the Kansas City landscape. We could see Crown Center, Union Station, Hallmark Cards, downtown KC, the new Kauffman Performing Arts Center, Bartle Hall, and much more. The food was outstanding. We had a 3-course meal with antelope as the main dish. The thing I liked about the food was it was not based on quantity but on quality. We both felt full and very satisfied but not stuffed. The service was excellent and the American Restaurant is truly not only a 5 star restaurant but a Kansas City gem as well. Highly recommend it."

"I have always loved The American Restaurant! It is the most beautiful restaurant I have ever seen, and the food is excellent! Debbie Gold is extremely talented! Service is spectacular and friendly! So why are so few tables filled on a Friday night? Our reservation was at 7:00 p.m. There was only one other table seated when we arrived. Only three more tables were seated (5 people total) while we were there. People don't know what they are missing!"

"Love the ambience. Tried it twice within two weeks. Really want to like it but have been disappointed with the food. Different persons in party had antelope each time and it had very little flavor. One party had the rib eye and it was over-cooked and had little flavor. Other members of the party had the seafood and said theirs was okay. Too bad! We really tried to make excuses to like it but for the price, everything should be outstanding. There should be no misses."

"Priciest place we have ever eaten ($100 per person for a 5 course meal)...but worth it to us because we love trying new things! Instead of being forced to pick one item off of each category (appetizer, salad, main course, cheeses, or desserts)....the Chef lest you choose any combo...even if its 5 main courses or 5 desserts! She simply adjusts the portion sizes to be sure you get full but are still able to finish it all. Complimentary fresh bread w\ fresh gourmet butters, as well as sample bites prepared by the chefs are included. We ate Foie Gras, Antelope, Artic Char, Salmon Roe, and many other delicious combinations of meals. Staff is over-the-top friendly and helpful, only wish portion sizes were slightly larger. All in all...amazing!"

"This place was great!! We went for my boyfreinds birthday, I made reservations a few weeks in advance. They went above and beyond to make it special for him!! They put Happy Birthday Brent on top our menus, the valet, said happy birthday as soon as we got out of the car, several other people came out to wish him a happybirthday!! I am so impressed by the outstanding service!!!

"Very appropriate for a special evening out with the husband, but not somewhere I would take anyone who doesn't have an appreciation for flavors or creative foods. For me, I loved it, but for my less cultured husband, the mix of flavors on one plate was too much for his taste. Very awesome view and very professional staff."

"We went to the American last week to celebrate a birthday. Everything was exceptional. Truly. The service, the presentation, the view, the food. It was a very special experience. "This was our second dining experience. Very quiet ambience with spectacular views. Great, imaginative menu, marvelous service, incredible wines from very inexpensive to "over the top." Dining options and portion sizes are based on how many courses you desire! If you wanted a 4 course dessert only meal, you can have it! I had the sea urchin panna cotta with sea grasses, sea grapes and daschi as an appetizer- very subtle, while my wife had chestnut agnolotti (ravioli-like), also a subtle starter. The aged beef and antelope were spectacular. We have been twice and will come back again next time we come to Kanas City!"

"Dined for the once monthly offered lunch. I have high expectations The American based on fantastic past dining experiences; however, the food was only ok this time. Some of the menu offerings (fish and chips, grilled cheese) seemed plain and overpriced. I won't be deterred, though, and will try the lunch again as this restaurant remains one of my favorites in KC."

"We had a beautiful night and a memorable dining experience. The presentations of dishes were pretty, but the taste was not as good as we expected. Rice was unevenly cooked and veal lacked of flavor. The overall ambiance was great because the beautiful view and outstanding service."

"We visited The American for the first time during restaurant week after years of living in Kansas City! The service, food and view lived up to every good thing I had heard! Our waiter was attentive without being over-bearing and our courses were brought out with what seemed to be perfect timing! We will definitely be back for dinner and to try the happy hour!"

"My husband & I went here for dinner during Restaurant Week, & as usual it did not disappoint! View was lovely; our server was courteous, knowledgable, friendly & yet professional. The prix fixe menu included three courses & the food was not only delicious, but also presented in attractive & witty fashion (arugula salad w/ pumpernickel crumbles & dehydrated carrot was plated to look like the earth, field of greens & the sun above). The cod was cooked perfect, flaked & yet tender & moist. Campo Lindo chicken w/ greens, while not the most exotic ingredients, was so flavorful & hearty, salty but not overly so, it was simple perfection. Wine pairings excellent, complemented the flavors of the meal so well. Best fine dining in KC, hands down!!!"

"Loved the food , service and view. Ordered the cod with black rice and saffron foam and it was delicious-as was my husbands Campo Lindo chicken. When we first arrived we were given an Ipad loaded with all the drink information-wines,cocktails,cordials...with details on each-great feature. Will return for more, it was a lovely experience."
