Keens Steakhouse, a classic New York chophouse, was already famous for its steaks and chops at the turn of the century. Founded in 1885, Keens has 90,000 clay pipes that line the ceilings – pipes once smoked by customers after dinner. Today Keens legendary mutton chops and dry aged prime steaks are still without equal in the city.

"I decided to have lunch at Keens with a great friend and both of us really enjoyed our food.. I thought the lamb chop I had was the best I ever tasted. The meat was perfectly cooked and so were the string beans that came with it. My friend had the sirloin steak and he was suitably impressed having been to many other steak houses in the USA. The only small issue we had was the space. The next table had to move their table and bump against ours everytime one of them needed to go to the washroom. However, it doesn't take away the fact that this was an absolutely outstanding meal."

"I save Keens for special occasions. The setting is an old beautiful building, formally the theatre district, sitting amongst the skyscrapers of midtown Manhattan. There are different rooms to dine in, each with an old world feel and setting. Clay pipes hang on the ceilings, beckoning to a time gone by. The food at Keens is top notch. Steaks are dry aged in house and the mutton chop is one of those dishes you must try. This time around I had the Chilean Sea bass, they are not just known for steaks. This place is a gem."

"Have dined at Keens many times but this time was a big disappointment. Could not get plain iced tea, steak was not up to the price , one steak had to be returned and took 15 minutes to come back, food was cold and the service was very slow . "My wife and I were in town for SNL. We saw this restaurant on one of travel channels best places to eat type shows so we decided to go. I've been to quite a few steak houses, both chain and mom and pop style. The restaurant itself was very cool. Lots of history. Very fun to look at all the old pictures and pipes. As far as the food, for the price it was just ok in my opinion. We had the filet and the mutton with market veggies. The steak was good but I've had better (for less) and the mutton was very good. All in all I would recommend this to a friend but only because of the ambiance. Probably would have a star rating higher across the board if the price was slightly lower."

"We went here as a group of 5 girls visiting New York. We weren't disappointed. The service, the atmosphere and the food were all fantastic. It's not a cheap night out, but certainly worth every penny. The portions are huge so we even came away with a doggy bag! We had 3 sides between 5 and it was ample. If we ever go back to New york we'd certainly book again. A hidden gem."

"We sat upstairs. Beautiful room. Waitress was very nice and attentive to our every need. Relish dish with olives, celery and carrots with dip was placed on the table when we sat down. We started with shrimp cocktail. Big and cooked perfectly. Next was the thick cut bacon. Great flavor. We cut off the fatty areas. Coca-Cola served in glass bottles - ($3/bottle - yikes! And no refills!) T-bone and baked potato for the main course. Undercooked. Sent back. Perfect on the 2nd go round! Filet was tender. The strip side had a tough membrane that we had to cut around. Dessert - coffee ice cream with hot fudge. DELICIOUS!!! Overall a great experience for our vacation in NYC."

"We had a great time. You provided a large round table for our party of 8. We were all comfortable. The service was very good. The steaks were cooked accordingly and delicious, but the side dishes were lack-luster. The lobster bisque had nice pieces of lobster, but the soup itself was substandard. The various vegetable side-dishes were also not wonderful. One in particular, soggy cauliflower and broccoli, seemed to have been in a steam tray for 12 hours prior to reaching our table. Thank you still for the great environment and the beef, but at your prices, the side dishes should really be much much better."

"I made my reservation for 5-11-13 for my bachelor party. The email that prompted me to write this review asked me "We would appreciate your feedback about your experience at Keens Steakhouse on 5/11/2013" The only problem was that when I arrived at the restaruant, the reservation they had me listed for was for 5-18-13. The restaurant blamed the reservation error on me, but it seems that it is either this website's fault or the restaurant's. They were able to seat me and my party of 10, though. But if they hadn't, I would have looked like a total a-hole in front of all my friends who flew in town to spend hundereds of dollars there. If it wasn't for that, I would have given higher ratings for overall service. The waiter was 4 stars."

"The thing that makes this restaurant great is the decor. You can tell that there is a lot of history in the place. From that perspective, it's worth a trip just for that.

As far as the food goes, the steaks were wonderful. The sides were only ok. I have had better sides at other steakhouses. Given the price, I would be more likely to try another steakhouse before returning to Keens."

"We decided to book a table at Keens following a wonderful night there last year - big mistake! Our waiter was the most miserable man we have ever encountered in a restaurant. The guy who poured our water was just as bad. No warmth or smile when taking our order, food was just ok - my husband loves steak and his ribeye was nothing special. Not once were we asked 'is everything ok?' as one would expect when you're paying $200 for a meal.

Suggest you go to Quality Meats if you want a fantastic steak and second to none service from lovely warm waiters who know you're out for a night out, paying a lot of money for a meal that you want to tell everyone about."

"Food was delicious and outstanding service. We were never rushed. Waitstaff was professional and caring. Even the vegetarian joining us at the steakhouse found something to eat. In the party of ten, we tried the oysters, bacon, mutton, rib eye, filet mignon, porterhouse and sea bass. All cooked to order....I really like the mushroom side. Only complaint was the serving sizes were so large.

This is a do again....good food, great service, and able to accommodate a large party. We were seated upstairs in the pipe room. If seated there, look up to see the hundreds of pipe (smoking pipes, not plumbing pipes)."

"Great steaks and atmosphere. Deceptively big restaurant but still feels like a steakhouse should. We were a group of 6 and I felt like it was the perfect number of people. We got the mutton chop and porterhouse for 3 and had more than enough food for 6 guys with sides of course. The mutton has a distinctive flavor and while i don't think i could fully enjoy an entire mutton chop being able to share it was great."

"Everything here is top notch. My favorite piece of beef is still the prime rib (King cut). Cooked to perfection with plenty of flavor. Shared a few pieces of the Porterhouse which is also excellent. Sides were excellent and the chocolate mousse was delicious."

"Keen's Steakhouse is a must on your itinerary. Our table ordered the mutton, sirloin and dover sole. Each was excellently prepared and the portions were generous. The meats were particularly tender and the sole melted in my mouth. There is a excellent wine list and the service exceeds expectations. We'll definitely return!"

"This was my 3rd time to Keens. Menu is good if a tad on the pricey side. I sat at the bar this time which has a bar menu which is much more reasonable. Steak was good, not a good as previous occasions but certainly couldn't complain! Will be coming back here again and again as the service is impeccable, the bar staff knowledgeable and the drinks and food are almost a "can't miss" for a decent meal."

"The steak was excellent and well worth the price. The bacon appetizer was very good, too. The waiter was a little pretentious at first, but he ended up mainly irrelevant. He was not extremely helpful."
