"Facility and ambiance were amazing but service does not match for several reasons, primarily wait times and service demeanor. We had a 745 reservation and were seared within 5 minutes of arriving which was fine. We submitted an order for appetizers and entrees around 820 and did not receive our appetizer until 915 with our entrees approximately 20 minutes after. Additionally, I called to request seating upstairs and the person on the phone was quite brisk and unaccommodating. As a previous member of the service industry there is an appropriate way to handle requests and this method was not the way. I understand that the request may not be possible to fulfill, but wouldn't expect the request to be met with seeming disinterest and disdain."

"We have eaten at 1833 several times. Each time, including this occasion, the food and service once seated is exceptional. However, we arrived 25 minutes early to enjoy a drink and relax outside near the open fire pits...which create a nice atmosphere. I checked in our dinner party of five and asked for drink service outside which I was assured they would be right with us. We waited ten minutes before one of the staff looked out and realized we had no service. When the server came, she was not very helpful...just wanted to take our order and turn it in. We then waited another five minutes for our drinks, during which time another waiter came out and asked to take our order...not realizing it had already been placed."

"My girlfriend and I visited 1833 to celebrate our one year anniversary and from the moment we walked up to the front door, the staff of 1833 made us feel welcome. There were two gentlemen at the door who greeted us with smiles and held the door open for us, and once we were seated we were immediately asked what kind of water we would like. Our waiter was nothing short of spectacular, from recommending starters and drinks to asking and congratulating us about our special event. We even got a sweet 'Happy Anniversary' note on our dessert plates! There is not a single thing I can complain about, and we will definitely be visiting 1833 again very soon!"

"We had a birthday dinner with a party of 8, were given a private room and Brian, who is an exceptional waiter and made this a perfect evening including providing many laughs and trivia notes. Food was all tasty and well prepared. VG wine list too."

"1833 is a fun place to dine, but the 4 of us ended up in a VERY loud room (Hattie's) with VERY loud people, upstairs. We would expect that in the bar area, but not so much in the dining area. We had a difficult time conversing which was too bad because the drinks & food were exceptionally good & service was excellent. After dinner, we had to leave our table & go downstairs to the outside area for dessert & after dinner drinks & comfortable conversation."

"When I made reservations, I noted that it was our anniversary. Nobody mentioned anything when we came in but we felt like we were given great consideration! We were seated at a fairly private table at the end of the balcony. We could hear the bar below which we enjoyed but had no issue hearing each other. Between our appetizer and entrees, "compliments of the chef" we had a strawberry gazpacho. Beautiful and delicious. I had the duck breast; my husband the pork loin. Every bite was surprisingly delicious! As if I had forgotten how good it was from the previous bite. Then we had dessert. I got the absinthe, which I had only heard about - Fantastic. My husband got Bourbon Pudding with "Happy Anniversary" written in chocolate. They did know!"

"This is a one-of-a-kind restaurant. I absolutely love the vintage, haunting decor. Service is wonderful, and they were nothing but accommodating to my gluten/dairy food sensitivities. I totally understand what it's like since I used to cook in restaurants in my former grain/dairy eating days. Rib-eye was AWESOME!.Service were very well-informed of the menu and ingredients, and they actually know what gluten is. :) Loved our experience so much, we came here twice on our 2 day getaway from the Bay Area."

"Our experience at at 1833 was excellent. For starters, the building & the decor are beautiful. This space has a great design team behind it with a great eye. Then the service kicked in and we were treated very well from the person who greeted us to our servers to the person who showed us out the door. Our meals were no exception as we all enjoyed something different & unique but delicious & sophisticated. No wonder this is a hot spot..they have everything covered."

"We were very disappointed with the service and pace of the evening. We ordered a glass of wine to accompany our appetizer. What appetizer? The appetizer took so long to arrive that we ordered a second glass of wine which was not served until after we finished eating the appetizer. We declined it anticipating our entrees and the wine we had ordered with that course. When we got our wine for the entrée, it couldn't have been 3 ounces. What's with that?? Ridiculous! The rest of the evening had the same disjointed pace. At one point, we had been without food for so long, an alert busser asked if we were waiting for the Truffled Chicken (which takes an hour to prepare). We were not..."

"Awesome, Awesome, Awesome. I wished I remembered our servers name, but he was a true pro. We had the marrow bones, the hamachi and the tartar to start. The wild mushroom with soft poached egg pizza was our "pasta" course (they were sold out of the gnocchi w wild boar ragu) and then we were dazzled with the salt crusted dorado and their truffled whole chicken.
We really had a fantastic dinner and a wonderful experience. I have recommended to others already and would go back in a heart beat."

"1833 has gone from spectacular to mediocre. The food has slipped noticably, but the service has disappeared. Our party of seven did not need a half hour to ponder our salad order, and seven possible desserts and absinthes walked out the door in frustration after another half hour contemplating the dessert menu. After awhile, the "dining experience" turns into "let me out of here.""

"I fell upon 1833 accidentally and stopped to go in. The manager immediately took me on a tour of this history filled setting. That was when it first opened and I have been visiting ever since. We sat at the bar this time and had dinner. It was Saturday night and very lively. The service including the hostess was great and so was the food. Love this place!!"

"The bar is great fun to enjoy one of their Creative Cocktails while waiting to be seated. Order their Bacon-Cheddar biscuits with the Maple-Chipotle butter-- amazing (and I don't even like biscuits.) The menu changes, but if they have the Branzini fish, then get it. Layers and layers of flavors like tamarind gastriqe and wasabi foam. Great wine list and good wines by the glass. Enjoyed the Baked Alaska. Be sure to get reservations as this place is hopping and busy. This summer, I look forward to reserving a terrace area to sit by the fire pit and nosh on apps and cocktails. Will return, for sure."

"In a town not known for food, the care and attention stand out. The house vibe seems to favor sweet-- noticeable in the cocktails-- whereas I'm a savory girl. I was unimpressed with the salads; however, the gnocchi was exceptional. A vivacious night place-- if you're in Monterey, highly recommended.
On another note, what is it with Monterey-Carmel? I remain unimpressed with the poor food quality. This despite surrounding dairies, farms, etc. Good food here should be easy to find. It was all meh compared with the Central Coast (eg Full of life in Alamos). You guys can do better."

"A group of us went for the Sunday fried chicken dinner. Everything was pretty excellent.
It's a little too noisy for a large group and my only complaint was that we weren't seated at a round table because we really couldn't hear anyone except the persons right next to us. The mashed potatoes while tasty are kind of oddly runny looking which was just a little off-putting but overall we liked everything. It's a good thing they didn't bring more than one deviled egg per person because we would have gobbled them down. I always love the Penicillin #2 and probably should not have ordered the 2nd one . .
We'll likely make this a regular event as long as they keep doing the chicken dinner Sundays."

"First table offered was so dark could not see/read menu. The option offered on second floor was in a bar area under the loud speaker. It was transit passage for the waiters next to the stairs,etc. The table itself had a pedestal that made seating uncomfortable. Noone came to apologize or check if seating acceptable. The waiter did his best to serve us but whole experience was unpleasant."

"This is the second time we have eaten here. This time we ordered the tasting menu. We had all the choices. Everything was fabulous except the steak which was a bit ordinary though the polenta and chard sides were great.

"I had been reading wonderful reviews about 1833 for quite a while so when a friend had a birthday, we thought we'd give it a try. I think when the service gets off to a bad start, it usually taints the rest of the experience. It wasn't THAT busy but it took at least 20 minutes after we were seated to order a drink. Then one if the recommended wines (Chardonay) was served warm so I asked for some cooler and they shook it with ice??? Yuck
The signature biscuits we were told took 3 minutes came in 30.
Food was interesting, all ordering something different. Signature chicken takes an hour and no one alerted us when we sat so by the time entree orders were FINALLY taken, it was kinda late ( we had ordered appetizers 1st)"

"This restaurant was a huge disappointment. We first had a drink at the bar and noticed how unfriendly the staff was. For dinner, we were brought to an upstairs dining room, where we were the only customers. The food was overpriced and not very good. We live in the Napa Valley and dine at some outstanding restaurants. We hope that 1833 can improve, if not, we won't be back."

"After all the rave reviews I read prior to making reservation was a tad disappointed. Not greeted when we sat down at bar, but very social after drink orders placed. Ordered the Steak for 2 (45 minute cook time) medium rare; was mostly rare with LOTS of fat and gristle (sp?). Roasted cauliflower was terrific. Bone marrow was good. Waiter stood behind me (plenty of room to stand at table for 2 and face both patrons) so had to crane my neck to see and hear him."

"The food as reviewed by folks on yelp..i.e. the bacon cheddar biscuits and the bone marrow were outstanding. Did not have the opportunity to try the items that require an hour: roast chicken, roast rib eye and salt crusted dorade so will save that for next time. The wine is relatively pricey and not so great. I understand the cocktailsa re marvelous but we're not into cocktails so are unable to comment. The scallop dish was pricey and didn't work well with the cauliflower. Will try it again but relatively pricey for what you end up with."

"We enjoyed the food a lot, even though it arrived somewhat haphazardly. The service, from the front door greeter through departure, was egregiously amateurish. The waiter didn't know the menu and didn't think we should be bothering him with questions. The water glasses were never refilled,etc.,etc."

"It was husband 36th birthday and I totally wanted to surprise him. My husband is a very harsh critic when it comes to food, beer, and wine. Considering he had a cold and feeling a little under the weather... he was amazed how wonderful the food was. We moved from Denver and it's been over a year and we truly thought there is no great nor amazing restaurants in Monterey, but this place provide us wrong. Thank you for making our night fun. The only complaint we have was the seating. We were close to the kitchen and whenever we talke, we would hear a slamming door going in and out. The hostest knew it was a birthday surprise but they failed to make it special because of the slamming doors"
