The Cupping Room Café was established in 1977. It was originally a wholesale coffee establishment. Different blends of coffee were brewed and tasted by perspective customers. This act of blending and tasting different coffees is called cupping - hence the name The Cupping Room. The coffee tasting went so well that the owners decided to change the name from The Coffee Connection to The Cupping Room Café. They also decided to open the back of the store and sell coffee and pie to the local artists.
The building hosting The Cupping Room is a landmark building. It was the first "tall" building in SoHo and is more than 100 years old. The high tin ceilings, hard wood floors, pot-belly stove and exposed brick walls are all part of the original setting.
The Cupping Room was a home for artists and locals. Today it is still a neighborhood place where you can see the locals and the famous come together in our homey environment.
"One of the most extensive brunch menus. We loved that the waiter let us sit and enjoy the place. It was a nice leisurely pace for the meal. Great location on a beautiful day to go shopping after you eat."

"We are from Chicago, wanted a great place for brunch for five in the SoHo neighborhood. We were seated within 10 minutes of our reservation. The inside has exposed brick, very light and bright. Good omelets, good breakfast potatoes, very good brioche french toast, great fruit on the side. Coffee was fine and I am a coffee snob. It was a very nice spot. I'd recommend it."

"Almost walked out immediately because the service was so bad. We had about 7 different waiters through our entire meal..which was only about an hour. They gave me SUCH a problem about asking for different cheese in an omelet and said they do not do custom omelets....what kind of brunch place doesn't have custom omelets?? But, then I guess they decided they were capable of doing it, so they made it for me and it was delicious! Food made up for the service...definitely."

"Visiting SoHo has been a food-lover's dream! One of the best places we've been to was definitely The Cupping Room Cafe. There is a reason this place has been in this location for 37 years, as the owner told us when we visited. I had never had Eggs Florentine before and...wow! It was SO good. My son had Eggs Benedict and my daughter had Whole Grain Waffles with Berries and they both raved about their food too. Our server was friendly and attentive....our whole experience was fantastic. I HIGHLY recommend."

"We had a lovely brunch. Since it was a Monday it was not crowded and we were able to sit for longer than usual. My guests were from out of town and thought it was a terrific place, very New York. Food was good, service excellent, and I will surely be back."

"Not too noisy at lunch for a business meeting. Specifically wanted Cupping Room's new american cuisine as our business lunch guests were from overseas."

"There's something about going to a place, walking through a hall and then being delighted at what you've found. That's what cupping room is. It's like walking into a gem -- with the long wooden bar and the brick wall."

"We were a group of 14 including kids celebrating a special family member's birthday. Our waiter, Jam was fantastic. Our meals were very good. The best part of the night was the lice jazz trio playing. They even played a happy birthday tune to my aunt. I highly recommend this place whether you are 2 or more."

"The 4 sausage links were fried which I'm okay with, but a couple of them were so deeply fried that the ends were burnt to a crisp which I do not enjoy. Eggs were fresh. French toast is okay."

"I went to the Cupping Room Cafe for Brunch with a friend for their birthday, brunch seems to be their most popular time. Because it is downtown it is a much more lax setting than a brunch spot uptown. We arrived and the host was very kind as they were running behind with seating, and were seated at an amazing table a few minutes later. Our server seemed to be overwhelmed by the amount of people because his attention was everywhere but at our table. We were in no hurry and did not mind, but I would not recommend if you need to be somewhere after. Over all the brunch was lovely simply because of the food and the company."

"Came here based on good reviews for breakfast and was sorely disappointed. Coffee for one thing was lukewarm and not that tasty. I expected more from a place called the Cupping Room. I got the waffles with eggs and sausage. Waffle was soggy, eggs requested was over easy, got over medium, sausage was regular link sausage. The side portion of sausage was huge though. My kids got croissants and they were cold and hard, but large. My husband got the eggs benedict, which was ok. Overall, nothing to write home about nor go out of my way to eat there again."

"One of the worst NYC brunches I can remember. Host, management and wait staff were all consumed with them selves and seemed to ignore the fact that they had a packed house. Were sat 30 minutes past our reservation time and things never got better. I will never, ever go back and I live a block away"

"We celebrated my wife's birthday in NYC with our college/adult children who live there. B My daughter selected The Cupping Room for brunch based on reviews. We had wonderful food and a great time. I had the eggs benedict florentine which was delightful. I was also very pleased with the side salad. My son had the same but with home fries which also were very good. Others had pancakes with various toppings and sides which were enjoyed. Reservations far in advance for a Sunday brunch are strongly recommended."

"We really enjoyed our brunch at the Cupping Room Cafe. The crowd was young and attractive, the "Salty Dog" was delicious with fresh grapefruit juice, and the food was yummy. The staff was pleasant and accomodating. I ate a brie omelet that was fabulous and we shared a tasty sour cream and raspberry muffin. The coffee was very good - as expected given the restaurant's history! Great location in SoHo too! We would definitely return when we're in NYC again."

"Have been a couple of times to the Cupping Room for brunch and once for drinks in the evening. For brunch it's a great place, good location, easy to find, yummy food. It can get quite busy at times, so best to book a table over the weekend. Price is reasonable too. It's not a fancy, over the top venue, but is interesting inside and is fast becoming my regular over the weekend."

"The good news is this wasn't our first time at the Cupping Room; otherwise we would not return. The Eggs Benedict were inedible, the potatoes ice cold and soggy, the cappucino luke-warm and tasteless--and the waitress (!) one of the worst servers we have ever had anywhere. Unfortunately, we were entertaining a guest and it would have been too awkward to complain. What was once our go-to breakfast place we now view with suspicion. Yes, we'll go once again--and then we'll see...."

"Brunch was excellent! We had a wonderful, relaxing meal in a really nice setting. Service was attentive, without being overbearing. The only question we left with was how did other tables score that lovely plate of small muffins and goodies that we did not get? We came down wanting to visit the Cupping Room and we already look forward to the next time."

"We had brunch Sun. 3/10 - the best was I could make a rezzie 3 hrs. in advance. It was a cute, cozy place - but it's a mad dash throughout brunch service & waitstaff, foodrunners, the lot are all bustling through the place. Hot plates, servers, hostesses are racing past you in every direction if you need to get up for any reason. The food came out in good time and the service was good ... until we were done with our meal. Afterward, the server wasn't very attentive with checking in on us so we probably sat for a good 20 minutes until he came back to offer dessert. It took another 10 min. to get menus. Overall, good service/food but they need to chill out and not operate so frantically. The food was good too but didn't blow me away."

"I loved The Cupping Room and will definitely be back at some point. I'm not sure making a reservation helps as we still waited for brunch and our names were put on the list along with others who were waiting upon arrival. Other than that, food was great, the people running the restaurant (hosts, etc.) were super nice and had great personalities. Our waiter was a little stiff and we had to ask for water refills, but it was busy and other than that everything was amazing!"

"Our server was excellent, very bustling scene, real estate is at a premium in this space, but where is it not in NY? We had a 12:15 reservation for a small group and was seated within 5 minutes of all people in our group arriving. Large portion sizes, excellent craft brunch cocktails. Ready for a cocktail - you should start with the ginger-sugar-rimmed 'Carrot Chic'. Not too carrot-y, more like TANG. Super sippable."

"Nothing really standout-ish besides their pancakes, which my friend ordered. I'm always on the hunt for the best pancakes and Cupping Room is definitely up there now. Didn't have any issues with service- our waitress wasn't too personable or anything, which may or may not be a good thing, depending on who you are. There is a lot of seating, which is a plus in NYC where it's impossible to get brunch seats. Having reservations available on OpenTable is a huge plus for any brunch spot in the city."
