Restaurant Reviews for Teatro Goldoni

Teatro Goldoni reservations Teatro Goldoni

1909 K St., NW
Washington, DC 20006

"DC's Best Italian Restaurant"--Esquire, 2008!!! Highest rated Italian restaurant in the "100 Very Best Restaurants"--Washingtonian, 2009!!! Winner, RAMW's RAMMY for "Your Favorite Neighborhood Restaurant"--2009!!! Exceptional cuisine is the underlying theme that drives Teatro Goldoni and our Executive Chef, Enzo Fargione – one of Esquire magazine’s 2009 “Chef’s To Watch” – is the driving force behind it all. Teatro boasts one of the largest dining venues in D.C., with 7,500 square feet of dining space for any event. Come try “the best lobster risotto in the city'" (Zagat, 2008) and our smoked Branzino Carpaccio cigar box which has “proven extremely popular” (Cigar Aficionado Magazine, October, 2008), or for a more intimate setting, a “chef’s table tasting menu [that] will blow you away” (Zagat, 2008). Daily happy hour bar specials are available daily from 5-9p.m. Less than two blocks from Farragut West metro. 1909 K Street, NW, Washington, D.C., (202)955-9494. teatrogoldoni.

Review 2 for Teatro Goldoni

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"This place was okay...we went for a fixed menu and the first thing we found out was that they didn't have one of the dishes they advertised...no big deal, the dish they used as a substitute was good. The first and second course were good, the swordfish was really dry and inedible. The service was mediocre...he seemed bored but nothing was really wrong...so that about sums it up...nothing was really wrong but nothing was really right either."

Review 3 for Teatro Goldoni

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"The food and service was exceptional. Only issue was that there was some kind of private event in the back of the resturant, where are our table was located. There were people walking in and out the party the entire time. That really took away from us enjoying our meal; as people from the party kept entering our personal space. Next, time management should move tables away from the private area durning events (to give more space to diners and partier's) or have some kind of traffic control."

Review 4 for Teatro Goldoni

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"One of the best dinners my wife and I have had. The lightly smoked branzino carpaccio appetizer was superb and the presentation, it was served in the cigar box in which it was smoked, was delightful. Rest of the meal matched the branzino in quality. Great to see an old stand by back at the top of its game."

Review 5 for Teatro Goldoni

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"We did the Tastings Journal event. There were only 2 choices in some of the 4 courses offered and tho we were there on only the second day at 7pm, they were out of one of the choices with no suitable substitute offered--only mixed green salad. The service was perfunctory and not helpful--didn't bring a wine menu until well after we were seated; had to ask for the red wine to be slightly chilled 3x--like Tom Sietsema we like it 15 minutes in the fridge not room temp. Food was OK but not outstanding. All very surprising in supposedly top rated restaurant."

Review 7 for Teatro Goldoni

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"We were promptly greeted & seated for the reservation we made through Open Table. I really enjoyed the decor - the colors were bold, the light fixtures were fun, and overall it was a nice change from a lot of other nicer DC restaurants. We sat under a wall of masks in a comfy oversized circular booth. Our waiter, George, was friendly, unpretentious, and very knowledgeable about the menu. The pasta dishes (tortelli & gnocchi) are not very big, but we were fine filling up on appetizers (tuna & proscuitto sushi) & bread. If you are looking for Italian food that is not straight up traditional, I highly recommend Teatro! It's definitely not cheap, so make it a special occasion...and most nights you'll get 1000 points at Open Table!"

Review 8 for Teatro Goldoni

Overall Rating 2.0 out of 5 (Fair)
"While the food was good and might have made us returning customers after this first visit, our very bad experience in getting credited for our 1,000 Open Table points was enough to put us off Teatro Goldoni completely. The maitre d' did not register us when we arrived although we explicitly stated our Open Table reservation. We were shocked to get a no-show notice the next day and even more shocked when the restaurant insisted that Open Table collect our credit card receipt as proof that we showed up, rather than search themselves, as they weren't overly busy on the night that we dined. Also, we'd requested a quiet table and were seated next to the wait station and a loud dining party rather than the quiet back room. Not recommended."

Review 11 for Teatro Goldoni

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"I took my wife here for the first time this weekend for her birthday dinner. I'm afraid we were a little disappointed. The huge dining space of the restaurant price, finely appointed surroundings, creative dishes, and high prices would make this a good place to impress a large group of clients for a business dinner-but not so good for a romantic birthday dinner for 2. The veal cheeks appetizer was tender and tasty, but the scallops appetizer and our salads were all extraordinarily salty - almost inedible. The pasta and sausage entree was good, though not exceptional, and the sea bass entree was overdone. Our waiter so frequently interrupted us, it was annoying. Our meal was just much more expensive than the experience was worth."

Review 13 for Teatro Goldoni

Overall Rating 2.0 out of 5 (Fair)
"The food was OK - nothing spectacular although one would expect above average in view of the prices. The tomatoes and Mozzarella were tasteless - they were pre cut and refrigerated which should never be done - both should be served at room temperatures. If good tomatoes are not available then this dish should not be served.
Overall, the food was just OK, and the price rather high.
Service was good.

Review 14 for Teatro Goldoni

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"Good spot for a business lunch. I had requested a big, secluded table in my reservation, and when I arrived, we were placed in a middle table right next to a server station. The hostess was accommodating in allowing us to move to a larger booth. Service was attentive and never rushed, although we were there for 3 hours (business lunch!). Very reliable, pleasant spot for lunch."

Review 16 for Teatro Goldoni

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"Unfortunately, a big club type party was setting up around 10pm that night, kind of killing the ambiance (rearranging tables, chairs, setting up plastic cups at the bar etc). The food was good, but the service was scattered (nice, but we had three different waiters), and the bartender had NO idea what she was doing. I asked for sidecar, and she basically gave me sugared vodka with a splash of Cointreau. Pretty awful. The red wine was also served warm. Not cool or even room temperature - warm. It could be a very nice place, as the chef seems to know a thing or two, but it seems they are turning into a weekend club scene - I asked, and this is a regular occurrence there. Too bad."

Review 20 for Teatro Goldoni

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"Sloooooowww service, but makes for a reason to talk with friends. It took one and a half hour before we got our orders (same as the three tables next to us). We were told the chef got busy with "chef's table"! Lousy excuse. We were having a good time otherwise we would have left.
BTW---- great drinks... special thanks to the bartender and our waiter George.... he was mixing them well, not watered down!

Review 22 for Teatro Goldoni

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"The restaurant is very attractive. We had a lovely banquette that was cozy and quiet. The first course of scallops in prosciutto was tasty. The scallops were fresh and perfectly cooked. The fresh mozzarella salad was wonderful. Garnished with candied cherry tomatoes and bits of balsamic gelatin, it was both interesting and delicious. It would have been enough for three diners to share. The lobster risotto was a bit disappointing, as the lobster flavor was somewhat overwhelmed by the tomato. The cavatelli with lobster and wild mushrooms was rich, earthy, and delicious. Portions are very generous and could easily be shared. A "tasting" type menu would be fun and give diners a chance to sample more of the offerings."

Review 23 for Teatro Goldoni

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"We had been to this restaurant about five years ago and were not impressed. However, we decided to try it again with some friends. This time it was a winner. The menu is one of the most creative and unusual selections we have seen. The variety and flavor combinations splendid. We all enjoyed our selection and appreciated the fact that when we split a salad they put it on two plates in the kitchen for us. We still find most restaurants too noisy, but this one was manageable. We will return."

"Our night at Teatro Goldini was very good. The extensive menu provided many options to choose from and our waiter was very knowledgeable and helpful. I had the Gnocci, which was a bit salty, but overall a very good dish. Not sure how crowded this place would be on a regular Saturday night since when we went it was during a heavy snow. Review 27 for Teatro Goldoni

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"Walking in the restaurant is beautiful. We requested a large rounded booth and loved it. We ordered all of the appetizers, each an entree, many of the desserts and a cheese plate. On food we spent nearly $400 and loved trying it all. There were maybe three others tables when we entered, halfway through our meal an 8 top arrived and our server disappeared we had to ask another waiter to get any sort of help. We were there on holiday and very excited about the ambiance and menu but our server didn't seen to find us as important as others making it disappointing. We didn't get one of the dishes we ordered until i asked again and it didn't seem to concern them as they still charged us for it. Attendance to our table was poor and uninterested."

Review 28 for Teatro Goldoni

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"Of the 3 courses I ordered, 2 were excellent and unusual, but the 3rd was a disappointment. I started with a flat saffron pasta with seared tuna and very nicely flavored accompaniments. I had never had a pasta quite like this, and it was excellent. For dessert, I had a red wine creme brulee, and it was also excellent. This was unique, and the wine gave it a richness and depth that most creme brulees don't have. But my fish entree was quite a letdown. It sounded wonderful: thyme-coated red snapper with mushrooms. But the fish was a limp, dry mess. Either the fish was overcooked, or it sat getting dry and soggy before being served, but it made the coating tasteless and the fish just didn't have any richness. I expected much better."

"Went for restaurant week lunch. The service was very pleasant and they made nice recommendations. Only glitch was that they gave us all each others' entrees, so we had to switch. A food highlight was the bread basket - they had a tomato bread that was really good, and they refilled the basket without us asking. Salad was crisp and fresh. My fish was cooked well, but a little salty. Desert was a little chocolate torte that had a lovely presentation and was a good end to the meal."

Review 33 for Teatro Goldoni

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"restaurant has all the potential of a five star, but I ordered lobster risotto, which was good, but for $33.00 a plate I expected a little actual lobster in the dish. it was comparable to a much less expensive italian restaurant in my opinion. the appetizer we had was really good however."

Review 36 for Teatro Goldoni

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"Very complex appetizers--delicious. Entrees were great.

The desserts were disappointing. We got the almond cake and white chocolate something. Didn't have much flavor; tiny portion. I honestly think those desserts could have been bought prepackaged at Safeway.

Review 37 for Teatro Goldoni

Overall Rating 1.0 out of 5 (Poor)
"Previous visits had been delightful. This visit was problematic. A scallop carpaccio was the highlight of the three offered appetizers, while the rolled sausage strudel that accompanied theparmesan flan seemed more like a bizarre reinvention of pigs-in-a-blanket. Of the three available main courses, the Gulf shrimp with roasted artichoke hearts in a red pepper sauce was fine, but a plate of cavatelli in a duck ragout neither looked attractive nor tasted well, the flavor more like liver than of duck. The desserts were small, little more than a palate cleansers. The music was loud and blaring, and no one turned it down despite numerous requests. We brought friends and were embarrased. They will not return. We do not know about us."

Review 39 for Teatro Goldoni

Overall Rating 2.0 out of 5 (Fair)
"I had previously given up on Teatro, but decided to try it again. My first course, diver scallop carpaccio was very disappointing. The topping totally overwhelmed the scallops, and was too tart to enjoy. The entree, I had, pasta with duck ragout, was too salty. The pasta alone was good, after I scraped off the sauce. And that's a shame to have to do that when that was the focus of the recipe. I enjoyed the Panne cotte dessert. Everyone at the table felt that all their food was too salty. We all agreed that the pudding first course was good.
I rated the service as very good because of the personalities of our wait staff, although they consistently confused the orders in terms of which dishes belonged to each of the 4 of us.

Review 41 for Teatro Goldoni

Overall Rating 2.0 out of 5 (Fair)
"As I had read mixed reviews, I decided to look into Teatro Goldoni for myself. The food was good, but nothing noteworthy. There are much better Italian places in DC, such as La Tomate and Sette Osteria.

The wait staff seemed strained, but the host staff was impeccable. The ambiance may speak to some, but frankly, it seemed contrived. I was seated in the back, adjacent to the kitchen, facing this huge photo-mural of three carnival masks. I would have prefered some more subtle wall art.

Review 44 for Teatro Goldoni

Overall Rating 2.0 out of 5 (Fair)
"A friend told me this place was great so I was quick to book a reservation during Restaurant week. I don't know if it was just one of those restaurant week flukes, but we left very unimpressed - and believe it or not, hungry! The main dish was three shrimp in some kind of puree and while it was fairly tasty, it was more of a tapa than what you might expect from an Italian restaurant! The appetizer diver scallops were way too salty and hardly edible. Dessert was not memorable. Also - the music was very odd - it went from heavy metal to rock which to me is just inappropriate for an Italian restaurant."

Review 50 for Teatro Goldoni

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"Only got to try the restaurant week menu for period Jan 11-17, 2010. The selections were limited but the food was pretty good. The selections were almost all anti-pasta, I enjoyed my meal but my date didn't eat much. The desserts were a little disappointing in that most Italian desserts tend to be rich and indulgent but the selection they had were more tart and tiny."

Review 51 for Teatro Goldoni

Overall Rating 1.0 out of 5 (Poor)
"Service was unprofessional. We waited 20 minutes after being seated before our server approached us. As we were a party of 6 youthful diners, they must have viewed us as lacking serious attention. The bottle of wine I brought was neglected until I made it a point to ask it to be served. The server did not ask if it needed to be decanted and instead went about pouring. In a cafe this is acceptable but not in fine dining at least at the price point they command. The food was uninspired. My diver scallop carpaccio lacked texture and was overseasoned. The flavors lacked any real inspiration. The problem persisted with the veal cheeks. While homely and tender, the flavors had muddled together. Family dining quality at obscene prices."

Review 53 for Teatro Goldoni

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"Restaurant Week lunch started with a bread basket that included a fantastic foccocia with a tomato paste puree. All four of us had Borlotti bean soup with mixed vegetables, pancetta cubes and an pool of extra virgin olive oil with a focaccia bread crouton. Entrees included Black squid ink Handkerchief size pasta served with a sauce of tomatoes, fresh basil and crab meat and Baked filet of black cod fish dusted with bread crumbs and black olive paste served with a ragu of mushrooms and pesto cream sauce. Dessert was a single choice of a Square of chocolate Gianduja torte with hazelnuts and served with Prosecco zabaglione sauce. The food was good but nothing special (the fish was dry as was the torte) given the provenance of the chef."

Review 54 for Teatro Goldoni

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"We recently tried Teatro Goldoni for Restaurant Week. The food was good (the white asparagus soup was tasty but too salty; the veal was tender and flavorful but nothing special; the white chocolate panna cotta was the most memorable part of the meal) but not excellent. Although our server was very good, it was obvious that they were trying to get us in and out as quickly as possible. There was no break between courses...they cleared the dishes as soon as we set down our utensils and placed the next plate/course. Considering the decent choice of good Italian restaurants in the District, I am reluctant to return to Teatro Goldoni."

Review 60 for Teatro Goldoni

Overall Rating 2.0 out of 5 (Fair)
"The waiter was not trained, and it was disappointing the standards of Teatro had gone down. All took a long time from bringing the menu to take the order. He was only quick to bring the bill before we had finished our dessert and coffee. The food was tasty, but the portion was small, the size of a kids'meal. Appetizer was half a small bowl of asparagus soup. The main course: 3 medium size shrimp on a round bed of about 2.5 inches diameter by 0.5 inch height, made of artichoke and chick peas puree. The dessert: a 2-inch by 1-inch cake with a bit of sauce. It is no longer the same Teatro Goldoni I knew."

"Our waiter disappeared for a long, long stretch after handing us the menus. He apologized when he returned, but it was odd.

The food in the meantime, was roundly unimpressive--particularly for the price. The low point was the shrimp, which was unshelled. Maybe this is a convention for high-end restaurants downtown, but having to pull apart a meal with black beady eyes and lots of legs is not something we find pleasant.

Review 64 for Teatro Goldoni

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"We went with a group of nine people and I think that every one of us enjoyed the food - all of it was quite unique and flavorful. Our main complaint was regarding the waiter - another large group was seated after us, and he took their orders before he took ours. None of us appreciated this. Also, the restaurant week menu was somewhat limited - not a lot of options, unlike other restaurants. Otherwise, I think this is a great restaurant with some amazing food - although a bit on the pricey side, so I would recommend going to their bar for their lunch specials OR during restaurant week when you get a three course meal for $20 (lunch) or $35 (dinner)."

Review 69 for Teatro Goldoni

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"I went to Teatro for Restaurant Week. Even though I knew it wouldn't be quite the same as going for the full experience, I was disappointed nonetheless. It was just ranked 21 on the Washingtonian's Top 100 list, and for me it didn't live up to that caliber. The menu was very limited (3 selections each for 1st and 2nd courses), and yet the waiter had to ask me twice to repeat my order. The server mixed up my and my date's first courses, and then later didn't notice that he had spilled the sauce from my dessert when he set it down. The scallops in my starter were drowned out by the other flavors on the plate, and my date's pasta was very salty. Highlights were the parmesan custard starter (delicious), and the braised veal cheeks."

Review 70 for Teatro Goldoni

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"The food was overall very tasty. I enjoyed the combination of ingredients in the diver scallop first course, but both it and the cavatelli entree were overshadowed a bit by the amount of salt they both contained.

The service was very efficient, if not a little brisk.

Having tried the restaurant week selections on Monday I would come again to order from the regular menu. Next time I will ask if the salt could be toned down or even omitted as I do not typically eat salt.

Review 72 for Teatro Goldoni

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"In the Summer of 2009, the meal was delicious. This meal was OK. The soup was nothing special and my pasta was OK. The desert was a joke. If you needed to add a few more dollars to serve the kind of meal you did last Summer you should have done it (like Prime Rib - where we were today and many others do)."

Review 74 for Teatro Goldoni

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"Being seated too close to the door on a frigid day made for an uncomfortable dining experience. The waiter apologized for delays in the kitchen but we waited way too long for lunch. I've had good experiences here in the past but this visit fell short of expectations. Food was good once we got it."

Review 75 for Teatro Goldoni

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"Great imaginative food artistically presented. Haute Cuisine without the Haughty French, just warm caring Italians. Best place I have found in DC so far. A bit pricey, but you get far more than you pay for. Great for that memorable special occasion. Service was very attentive without being intrusive, just there when you needed them. Terrific atmosphere, all around wonderful dining experience."

"The Lobster Risotto was not as outstanding as advertised, otherwise the food was above average. specially the rolled guinea hen. but the service and warmth of the staff more than made up for it. When we next visit Washington we'll try and hit it again."

Review 78 for Teatro Goldoni

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"The food here is very good to outstanding. We had spectacular appetizers: my roasted baby octopus, tender and flavorful, and my partner's branzino in a cigar box, one of the signature dishes. We each had pasta dishes that were very good. My cavaletti with smoked lobster had first-rate ingredients and was well prepared, but the flavors came off as luxe but muted. Desserts were good, but not up to the levels of the appetizers and entrees.
Service was very good. Tables are well spaced, and the chairs quite comfortable. One big complaint with the ambience is the third-rate Italian rock music that is piped in. Hearing "Eve of Destruction" sung in Italian did not enhance our fine dining experience.

Review 80 for Teatro Goldoni

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"I booked a reservation at Teatro Goldoni after proposing to my girlfriend. (she said yes) The staff went out of their way to ensure that flowers were on the table, champagne (Cristal) was chilling at the table, and the service was impeccable! I cannot say enough about the staff, management, and food at Teatro. If you pass up an opportunity to experience this restaurant, you are doing yourself a great injustice. A rare D.C. find!!!"

"The meal was delightful--light Italian cuisine. Do not miss the salads with their delicate, light dressings. Service personnel were discreetly hovering nearby to address any need of the diners. All in all, a fine dining experience.

N.B. to gentlemen: I have received two thank you's from the lady I took to Teatro for lunch two days ago .

Review 83 for Teatro Goldoni

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"there is a new owner, a new chef, but the same delightful maitre d Israel. The duck risotto was outstanding, as was the lobster cavitelli, topped off with wonderfully smooth and rich caramel gelato. Ask for a booth if possible, tables closer to the bar may be distracting. There was a huge crowd at the bar as they offer a terrific price, $20.05 for a choice of entrees and glass of wine I will return this restaurant to my "old standby" list and recommend it to everyone"
