"Canteen has a terrific limited menu that changes each night, and very good wine choices. Seating is limited and the setting is a bit like an upscale diner - the service is very personal. It's a great place with an individual personality that brings you back and back."

"I had not eaten at Canteen in years and it remains a terrific destination. Yes it is funky with the four booths and eight seats at the bar and only two seatings. But get over it and just sit on down and enjoy a truly fabulous meal. The food is amazingly good--beautifully prepared, very fresh and 100% delicious. The service is relaxed and fun--clearly the people who work there love it. It ranks up there with any other of the highly-touted restaurants in the city. As a bonus it is in a funky little space next to the art school and you get to tour the dorm when you go to the loo. Go for the food--you will not be disappointed. And the prix fixe price (around $50)is quite reasonable for the quality and volume of food you get."

"Had a fabulous 4-course dinner for $52! Again! Couldn't be happier with the food or service. The menu options are limited but everything was delicious and everyone went away satisfied. Well-priced wine list--I do wish they'd add a few higher-end bottles, though, because the food deserves it."

"Delicious food, as always! All 4 of us agreed that the 1st course (trumpet mushroom salad with walnuts) and 2nd course (crab soup) were spectacular -- these were the only choices on the prix fixe menu, thank goodness, otherwise we might have missed them. The 2 choices for main course (cod or lamb) were also fabulous, as were the 2 dessert choices (chocolate mousse with chicory tulle or old fashioned strawberry shortcake). This tiny "diner" restaurant in the Union Square area continues to serve up amazing food."

"Canteen was excellent. We both had the same thing but enjoyed every bit of it. The trout salad, cod soup, bass and strawberry shortcake. The dessert was the best strawberry shortcake either has ever eaten. The cod soup was a bit unusual and unexpected but delicious. The bass was wonderful and the trout amazing. Canteen never disappoints which nice to be able to depend on that."

"We loved our dinner at Canteen! The food was absolutely delicious. The service was attentive but not overbearing, and the meal was paced perfectly. Every dish was comprised of incredibly fresh ingredients with flavors that melded perfectly together. We aren't typically big dessert enthusiasts, but we ate every bite of our meal from the first course all the way through to the outstanding strawberry shortcake."

"I love small, unique spots in unexpected locations which is true of Canteen. Also on the plus side, the food is refined in almost every respect. Well, perhaps the rolls were a bit pedestrian. But speaking of rolls, they exemplify one of Canteen's main shortcomings: too small portions. Don't get me wrong. I'm not expecting some oversized hunk of expensive fish for my entree. (The bass I had was quite adequate and ever so tasty.) But I hungered - literally - for more when it came to everything else. The other major failing was service. Not that it wasn't attentive or prompt. Quite the contrary. We were practically rushed through our dinner and then abruptly given the check in a manner that said "there's the door!" Overall value = small."

"Welcoming, fun and the food is delicious! They offer choices within the fixed menu and our table of 5 all thoroughly enjoyed the dinner. The wines are well chosen to compliment the menu."

"The two sitting prix-fix menu offering is an experience on is own. The dishes were amazing, each better than the one before. The main course of pork and lentils, richly spiced and mellow, cooked to perfection with well balanced flavors. And the dessert of pear and hazelnut tart with chocolate mousse a worthy ending to an incredible diner. This place is a must for foodies."

"I want to keep this treasure available at all times, for myself, but that is about selfishness. Everyone will love this restaurant, despite smallness, with many of us at bar stool seating. We had great view of ongoing operation and total access to staff!"

"We selected this restaurant as it was close to our hotel and well rated. We found the fixed price menu (the only option) to be a little pricy. The staff worked to ensure my gluten free needs were met. The food was well presented and very tasty. While the restaurant was very small it had a cozy atmosphere. If the booths were all taken groups of 3 or less would possibly have to sit at the bar. We would recommend it as a place to eat if you were in the Union Square area."

"Canteen is a gem! The food sparkled with fresh, light taste notes and surprised us with delicious flavors. The hot rolls served before the meal set the tone by being buttery, warm and tasty. The rest of the semi-pre-fix menu -- trout salad, pea soup with crab, beef tenderloin or hazelnut-breaded skate (outstanding) and chocolate mousse with caramel or buttermilk cake with poached, spiced pear -- was delight as each course arrived. Service was attentive, cheerful and professional. We will definitely be back!"

"We loved the intimacy of the restaurant. Only 20 people dining during our sitting. The atmosphere was that of serious foodies enjoying the Prix fixe menu. Everyone enjoyed the pea soup and the venison. The almond pear flan was disappointing. Boring! Cauliflower appetizer and rockfish entree got mixed reviews.Overall we enjoyed the experience but found it on the pricey side for two good courses."

"Every item we ate tasted like the essence of what it was, from the fresh pea soup seasoned with a touch of mint to the desserts. The chef manages to make each bite delicious! Though the price is high the food, if not the ambiance, is definitely worth it."

"This is a very good restaurant for group / family dining as it is a casual, friendly place. The wood oven is open to the dining area and adds to the ambiance with warmth and aroma. The entrees can be served family style so diners can share from platters which are arranged with accompaniments. The rotisserie pork and cornbread stuffing was as good as I have had anywhere. Truly exceptional. We will return next trip to San Francisco. Cheers!"

"Dennis Leary, I think, is one of the best chefs in San Francisco and his small restaurant on Sutter street is a gem; he prepares all of the food himself, one server (two seatings per night) and each course (set menu), is wonderfully special. It is my favorite and I eat in almost all of the best restaurants in San Francisco."

"What an interesting business model. Service was outstanding, but I wish the food met that level. Food allergies were accommodated but with the prix fixe menu it was hard to enjoy. It's very weird to have everyone on the same part of their meal as you -- feels like a cafeteria or canteen (ok, bad line). Good to experience, but we won't be back."

"One of the best meals I've ever had, but not just in a "delicious" sense... after some discussion the best word we settled on to describe the food was "precise". Every single dish was so simply and perfectly composed, with flavor combinations executed with a precision I've rarely encountered. I found myself shaking my head, almost in disbelief and certainly in delight, with every bite. There were a lot of out-loud "wow"s during this meal. Amazing meal in every aspect."

"Me and my girlfriend went for dinner on a Tuesday night. It was a set menu that night which was a little bit of a surprise but fortunately we were excited about everything on the menu. A 3 course meal at a very friendly price. The noise level was perfect for being able to talk and hear each other. A great experience and I would recommend to people but I would warn them to check the menu ahead of time to make sure you are happy with the selections for the night."

"Excellent food. I had one of their special menus and the food was wonderful. Good ingredients expertly prepared with some innovative and surprising twists. The room was much more comfortable that I imagined (I sat at one of the booths). We brought our own wine, but the list was short and well edited. Kind and attentive service."

"My wife and I love Canteen. We took two friends to the fixed price 100 French recipes etc. and had an excellent meal. The venison was delicious, though nearly too small to amuse our bouches, the brioche sublime, the cream of artichoke soup absolutely delicious, the fish perfectly cooked, the sauce blan, and the almond torte dessert tasty, but ordinary. Thus, very good, but short of outstanding. The server truly was outstanding- unobtrusive, competent, and informative. Her description of the Rhone styled red wine we chose was spot on. Nice to be steered to a good value. We will return again and again the this cozy spot where we have never been disappointed"

"This place was recommended in Fodor's guidebook, and it was the find of the century! Only 20 diners per sitting, a short pleasant walk from Union Square hotels. Superb, beautiful food for just $43-50 for four courses. Really an extraordinary experience."

"Canteen was a delight! This is a very small restaurant seating maybe 22 people. Half of the seats are at the counter. The decor is somewhat diner-ish and the menu was quite limited although I understand it changes frequently. The food was phenomenal!!! It absolutely deserves the 27 rating in Zagats. The service was quite good although casual. Our server was extremely knowlegeable about the food and wine. She beautifully walked the fine line of being extremely professional but not stuffy. She seemed to enjoy her work and her customers. I would go back in a heart beat!"

"I've heard so mych about Canteen and have enjoyed every sandwich or salad I've eaten at The Sentinel or AU so when a good foodie friend was coming into town I thought what a great unassuming place to go. I was right and it was all the hype I heard! Especially was excited about the 100 menus he was doing and again worth the hype. The artichoke soup was divine, you'd think it would've been bogged down with too much cream but that certainly wasn't the case, s light and incredibly flavorful. I had the big eye tuna with lentils. I loved my dish but there were just a few too many red peppers for my personal taste, but it was spot on and I can get over that."

"Canteen is a very minimalistic restaurant - it looks like a throw-back to the 50s - a very small diner. Looks can be very deceiving - Canteen has top notch food served by a delighful waitress. The food quality and taste rivals the finest restaurants. The day I was there, there was only one choice for dinner - a prix fix menu, but they are very accomodating to vegetarians and food allergies.
Before dining there, my husband thought the atmosphere was cold and sparse and didn't have any interest in eating there, until I did with a friend and gave him a full report :-) This weekend, he thoroughly enjoyed our dinner there.
I do think it is a bit expensive though."
