Carpe Vino (21+ Establishment)

CARPE VINO SERVES PERSONS 21 YEARS OF AGE OR OLDER (YES...EVEN THOUGH WE SERVE DINNER). Located in what was originally a Civil War-era saloon in the heart of Old Town Auburn, Carpe Vino offers a unique setting for relishing great wine and stellar cuisine. Enjoy wine and dinner at the "Mary Pickford" wine bar with selections from all over California, or relax in our elegant dining room, surrounded by racks of wine. Carpe Vino's innovative menu is French-inspired with Mediterranean influences and flavors from around the world. We offer fine dining tempered by our Old West heritage, with many core ingredients sourced from local farmers whom we know by name. The menu changes virtually weekly, with new selections added based on farmer's market availability. Upwards of 40 wines are available by the glass; since Carpe Vino has a substantial wine shop business, bottles opened in the building are priced at retail plus $5. Carpe Vino is truly "one of a kind!"

"We usually avoid an event day like Mothers day or Super Bowl to go out and deal with the crowds. We took a chance on the Carpe Vino as we had heard gereat things, they had a nice menu planned and we wanted to be pampered. the food, service and experience were fantastic. I highly recommend this restaurant and we plan to back again soon."

"Highly recommend to wine lovers and foodies. Very pricy, so not for anyone on a tight budget. Had a nice romantic dinner for two, shared the Filet Mignon, used a $75.00 gift card, and spent another $75.00 so we could split a 5 course meal. Cheese Plate big enough for three people, soup, salad, filet and dessert. Great for special occasions. Service was excellent. The best bargain is to buy a bottle of wine (at retail price, with only a $5.00 service fee added)."

"As always dinner was excellent!!!! We had the french prix meal which enabled us to try different foods which was exciting and delicious!! Our server Paul is the best server ever!! Wine nor water glass remained full and my husband who is a very slow eater never felt rushed!!! Highly recommend!!"

"The only reason I didn't give the food five stars, which I usually do, is because this one time my lamb was tough. The fava beans it was served on were delicious though. Carpe Vino is our favorite restaurant in the entire Grass Valley, Nevada City, Auburn area with consistently great food normally. We always do the monthly themed dinners with a group of our friends and it is a lovely evening and I never hesitate to recommend CV to anyone."

"Took my husband there for his birthday. He was looking forward to having the caesar salad, but it had been taken off the menu just recently. The salad he did have was so-so. The entrees were good. Our main problem was the noise level. We sat in the first dining room to the right of the bar. When we arrived, the noise was not too bad, but by the time we had finished dinner, we had to scream to each other - and the room was not even fully occupied. We understand the building is old with bad acoustics, so most likely will not return for a quiet dinner, but stay in the bar area for wine tastings & small plates."

"We celebrated our anniversary at Carpe Vino. They had a $49 four-course dinner special which my husband enjoyed. I had two items off the special menu - everything was good. The mussels in a coconut citrus broth were xlnt. The Moroccan chicken also very good. The dessert was delightful as well. The food is always consistently good to excellent and if you are on their e-mail list, you will get info on their fixed price dinners that roll around fairly often. Drew was on hand talking to folks as they were winding up their meals - always a nice touch to talk to the owner."

"It was 'Citrus Serenade' prix-fixe dinner at Carpe Vino and what a special treat it was! From the sashimi of halibut, to the carrot tangelo soup (I could eat this all day), the salmon with blood orange, and the splendid desserts.......Well, I could go on and on.
As I have always stated in my reviews of Carpe Vino, they simply are the best! With Chef Alexander, I am always amazed with his culinary craft and creativity. The staff (kudos to Ada) is always attentive and knowledgable. And let's not forget the wines....Jay Johnstone came by our table and turned us onto a great Elyse Zinfandel, and so we purchased 6 bottles!"

"Over the course of the past couple years we have attended most of Carpe Vino's prix-fixe special dinners. They have been consistently outstanding. We think Chef Eric Alexander is one of the best, most inventive chefs in the region (including the Bay Area). He must have a great sense of humor to turn out such impressive dishes while working in such a tiny space! The dishes are inventive, creative, thoughtful and entertaining.
Service is attentive and knowledgeable. The staff is ready to discuss the different wines, and will make recommendations without being pushy. Sometimes it has been quite dark at our table, they seem to take their "mood lighting" a little too seriously.
We remain consistently "wowed" by meals at Carpe Vino."

"I've been here two other times for wine and appetizers and had good experiences, but hadn't had a full meal before. During this last visit, we started with wine at the bar and them moved into the restaurant. We ordered the pork trotters, ahi tuna, mussels, and lamb shank. Split everything down the middle (too good not to share). Plus, the flourless chocolate torte for dessert. All were awesome. Service was great - very friendly and attentive. Will definitely be back!"

"I ordered the four course meal, and every course was delicious. Each dish was perfectly prepared with wonderfully fresh ingredients, and included a wonderful combination of flavors and textures. On par with San Francisco and Napa restaurants."

"I will return to Carpe Diem. The food was incredible, specifically the lamb shank and the sturgeon. Our server was knowledgable and recommended perfect wine pairings for our entrees. The only downsides were that the restaurant is very small, the noise level high, and the service slow. When we arrived there was no host to meet us and we stood around for 10 min not knowing where to go. There is not much room to move about the bar area, and the tables are close enough that we could hear the conversations at the next table (and they were speaking in a normal volume). The noise level was also considerable, but we found that sitting in the room next to the bar (as opposed to in the same room as the bar) was provided a quieter environment."

"1st time at Carpe Vino. Really enjoyed ourselves. Menu was Prix Fixe - New Orleans style food. Very good. Especially the desserts: Bananas Foster and Gateau de Sirop.
Good service - the only complaint was when we asked for a wine recommendation, he selected the most expensive wine in the category. (the wine was outstanding but we were hoping he'd select something that provided a little more 'value')
We'd definitely recommend and return to Carpe Vino."

"This was my first time at Carpe Vino. Quaint setting with limited seating. Daughter and I treated ourselves to "New Orleans" prix fix dinner. While the New Orleans meal well seasoned (not spicy hot), the flavor profile was excellently balanced which I would call a unique experience for foodies (but probably not for a "steak & potatoes" palate).
I would rate the service as very professional, knowledgeable regarding both the dinner and wine menus, and curteous but a tad bit low on the "friendly meter" (although nothing to complain about and note I gave service 3-stars).
Carpe Vino was recommended to me, and I will likewise be recommending to others. I am planning to anxiously watch for future prix fix monthly specials."

"Carpe Vino provides a unique menu, excellent service, and excellent wine value for an overall dining delight. Not to be missed if you love wine and fabulous cuisine. The cauliflower soup was a huge surprise and the chicken liver mosse i couldn't say enough good things about. My sturgeon was prepared perfectly and our server could not have been more helpful. Pricey? Not really, when one considers the value received. Highest recommendation!"

"The bread was not very fresh, but I enjoyed the day boat scallops and the duck breast enormously. A bit noisy for my taste, and also a bit noisy to make this a terribly romantic venue. But the menu is always changing and is quite creative. Do wish it featured more fish and seafood options."

"The Chef does an outstanding creative job on his starters, soups, entrees, etc. All is excellent. And Paul is a most efficient waiter, and is friendly and professional at the same time. "The food and service were excellent.. The only concern was that we had a 5:00 p.m. reservation confirmed and when we got to the restaurant the reservation they had was for 7:00 p.m. They had no problem seating us, but I wonder where the glich occurred..."

"We love this place and are regulars there. The chef is extremely talented, the staff well trained, and everyone works together as a team that makes the experience of eating here special every time. It is a 'high end big city gourmet restaurant' in the comfortable semi casual atmosphere of Auburn with a touch of comfortable elegance. Great for an evening with friends or cozy couples occasion."
