The Plumed Horse Reviews List

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"Fantastic food. From amuse bouches to a coconut dessert, the food was transcendent. We had foie gras three ways which was outstanding and a terrine with winter vegetables that was also excellent. The crab and uni souffle was a revelation and the halibut, a daily special, was one of the best fish dishes I have ever had. Portions were also reasonable. Service was attentive although someone added 2 bottles of mineral H2O ($16 each) to our tab. Decor was beautiful, austere: a few blooms would have been nice.

I had a cocktail which was excellent and wonderful glass of Chablis which, at $20, was way over-priced. The wine list seemed to have a wide selection of affordable wines so it is too bad that wine by the glass is so costly.

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"First time we went after the change of the owner. To our great pleasure they gave us THE CHEF'S TABLE, which have huge window looking in to the kitchen in a private room. The food was over the top (Peter is better than when he was at Aqua in SF), great service. We are planing to dinner again very soon."

Review 7 for The Plumed Horse

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"We were pleased to find the Plumed horse open on a Monday evening. We were greeted and given a tour of the restaurant and the immense wine collection. Once you've been seated you're greeted again with the champagne cart and throughout the meal many little extras are brought to the table. The chef's signature black pepper souffle with uni and dungeness fondue is stunning and delicate. We did feel a bit overwhelmed with the wine list, this being our first experience in a restaurant of this caliber. We ought to have enlisted the help of the sommelier but did not think of it at the time. Portions are quite reasonably sized and it was lovely to eat such a spectacular meal and leave the restaurant feeling fully satisfied yet not unpleasantly full"

Review 8 for The Plumed Horse

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"The dining room was hip, modern and very comfortable. My husband and I enjoyed the eight course tasting menu. The food was innovative and deliciously prepared. The standout was the squab with a farm egg and greens. The wine pairings were spot on. The service was professional and fun. Kudos to Manny and the entire staff for hosting a wonderful dinner in a beautiful spot."

"We are frequent diners to the "New" Plumed Horse and love the design, the food, the service, and the wine list. We enjoyed fabulous line-caught halibut on this occasion. Review 12 for The Plumed Horse

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"My wife and I were celebrating her birthday, so I picked the Plumed Horse with a nice romantic evening in mind. We both picked the 8-course prix fixe menu since it was our first time dining at the restaurant and thought that it would be the best way to "test the chef". It was very pricy, but we realized that going in. We were not disappointed! Each and every course was fabulous, from the foie gras to the bluefin tuna to the kobe beef to the chocolate souffle. Each course memorable. My wife thought that the interaction with the serving staff was a bit too frequent, but I didn't share that feeling. With an 8-course menu it's going to be more interactive than with a traditional ala carte meal. Overall outstanding!"

Review 13 for The Plumed Horse

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"From the moment we walked in, until the end of the 5 hours we spent there, was a fabulous experience. Even though the night was sold out, and the servers were very busy, we never felt unattended, neglected or rushed, obviously from the time spent. The food was incredible and perfect timing in between courses. We had the tasting menu with great wines to compliment and enjoyed every taste of it. The presentation and artistry of every dish was such a creative piece that we looked forward to the next dish with such anticipation. The service was flawless throughout the night with attention to every detail including our departure by the valet. The server, sommelier and maitre'd made our night one that we will never forget."

Review 15 for The Plumed Horse

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"From the moment we arrived were treated with personal attention. Our hostess sat us immediately and congratulated us by name on our special occassion. Not only proffessional but very thoughtful. Our wait staff were always there when we needed them and yet not hoverimg over us needlessly so that we could enjoy our time together. The food was simply fantastic! I've dined at a number of the best establishments in wine country and they are certainly one of the best. I wish the restaurant was closer to Sonoma because I would go much more often! Thank you to all of you from the valet to gentleman who kept our water glasses full you all worked wonderully as a team and made our special occasion even more so. We will certainly be back!"

Review 16 for The Plumed Horse

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"I took my wife to Plumed Horse for Valentine's Day dinner. The food was a disappointment compared to our past experiences (before the redesign of the restaurant). The salad came essentially without dressing. The pecorino cheese had no trace of truffle in it, albeit it was described as "truffled". We had the salmon, which was high quality, but with a bland almost tasteless sauce. The steak was OK but nothing special. Finally, the desert, a microscopic size chocolate souffle, was OK, but came with one spoonful of sauce, if one can believe that. Overall, the service was as good as it used to be, but they should hire their old chef back."

"Disappointing at best. Went for Valentine's dinner. Wine pairings were excellent and service was nice. But the food was mediocre at best. With the rantings and ravings about this place, I expected much more. Heck, the lobster was as rubbery as an eraser...a restaurant of this quality should never overcook their seafood."

Review 20 for The Plumed Horse

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"What a fabulous, special dinner! The Plumed Horse is not the kind of place one can afford to eat at regularly (at least, not most of us), which makes it a very special dinner. The attention to detail, from both the Chef and the staff, is impeccable. The wine steward is one heck of a wine snob, which is what you want when the wine list is actually comprised of two separate and lengthy books! This is the kind of place where the server is going to tell the you the background and history of the chef, including his education, experience and food preparation philosophies! Make sure you allot at LEAST 2 hours for dinner here and do not miss a walk through the glass wine cellar with a glass floor with views down to the additional cellar space!"

"Other than the smelly antelope and barely OK Tuna the food was exemplary. Those dishes are hard to cook and we are willing to forgive. Service is at the level of a Four Seasons or Ritz Carlton. It really bowled us over.

The noise was kinda hard to bear but hey it was Saturday night....and the folks there were happy!

Review 24 for The Plumed Horse

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"I would give this restaurant 3 1/2 stars. I went there with my husband and sister; we decided to skip the tasting menu, and just ordered a la carte. The food tasted very good, and is beautifully prepared. Our only complaint is that the kitchen and wait staffs were not totally in sync. The amuse bouche and appetizers came very fast; there was a long wait between appetizer and entree (at least 20) min, and there was no explanation, no amuse bouche... We were just sitting there. Finally, our waiter came and informed us that the chef is working on our dish and it's coming. Also, one of the wait staffs didn't know which page the chateauneuf du pape was on on the wine book. He had to go back and ask."

"My wife and I went to Plumed Horse for Valentine's Day. It was our first visit. We loved the ambiance of the place; we were hoping for a night out that felt truly special, and different from our usual whole-family haunts. The Plumed Horse certainly delivered on that front. The service was delightful, though strangely enough, each and every course was delivered to the wrong person. You'd think they would have caught on after the first or second. Then there was the food. It was very good, but not... spectacular. I would have loved this meal for $250, but for $400, I was expecting more."

"The experience was great, but we chose the wrong day to go since it was Valentines Day weekend and the food was only par, nothing to jump up and down about. However, they should've told us, plus update their website that they were going to have a Valentines Day taste menu the whole weekend and not only Valentines Day since we were expecting to order from the menu especially it was not Valentines Day when we went. We will try going again on a non hoikday weekend to see if it is better."

Review 30 for The Plumed Horse

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"The Plumed Horse has an air of atmosphere for the sophisticated and the more traditional dinning experience. If you want to be taken serious for both your eating pleasure, palate and dietary exceptions, this place will graciously fit the bill.
My date and I had a lovely experience on Valentines Day where we received exceptional service without being hovered over, but as though they knew instinctively when to attend our needs. I felt almost like royalty. It was a very dignified approach with light interaction. The ambiance was warmly sophisticated without being sedate. It has kept up with modern times without losing the special appeal of its history. Although the meal was pricey, for the special occasion it was worth it. Memorable!!!

Review 31 for The Plumed Horse

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"I've been to The Plumed Horse before and both the food and service were impeccable. My experience on Valentine's Day was not at the same level: the staff seemed a little overwhelmed and the dishes (a pre-fix menu) weren't as exquisite as my last visit. I would definitely recommend this restaurant for a dining experience other than a holiday."

Review 32 for The Plumed Horse

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"An absolute amazing experience! Even though it was Valentine's Day, their service did not falter and it was exceptional, from busboy to Maitre D'! Top notch service with a delicious menu (love everything from salads to main course) and excellent wine selections. We couldn't have felt more pampered from the service (never once did we have to ask for water refills or even a smile) and the food was incredible. This is a real gem for foodies who want to enjoy the entire dining experience."

Review 33 for The Plumed Horse

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"The ambiance is outstanding, and maybe that is what you're paying for. While the food was very good, it was not at the level one would expect for our $400+ dinner for two (after tip) on Valentine's Day. While certain parts of the meal were outstanding, too many parts were not. One course was lobster, and at a restaurant with this price tag, your lobster should not be overly chewy. The tastes were outstanding, but the lobster itself was not. The next course was a Kobe Beef. This had inconsistencies in that my wife's piece was amazing, it cut like butter and was a treasure to chew. My piece was all tendons, difficult to cut, impossible to chew... I would have sent it back had my wife not been full after eating half of hers (I ate the rest)..."

Review 34 for The Plumed Horse

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"Made last minute plans for dinner on Feb. 13 and had no problems making reservations for that same night. Unfortunately, at no point during making and confirming the reservations on Opentable was it stated that they were only serving a prix fixe Valentine's dinner that night. We were quite disappointed, as we had already picked out dishes to order ahead of time. Service was awkward from our host, Robert. he stepped on my husband's shoe twice, placed his dessert spoon on the table hanging halfway off the edge, was hovering by our table for the first half of our meal, and just look uncomfortable in general. My food was great, my husband's were mediocre. Would like to try a la carte, don't know if I can afford to risk disappointment again"

Review 35 for The Plumed Horse

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"Had the tasting menu with my wife last week. We commented a few times to each other that service was a bit slow, then when we were about to get the check, another couple across the room from us blew up at the server for slow service. From what I could tell, they had been at the restaurant for over 2 hrs, and the woman had yet to receive her main entree! Regardless of what others' service was like, their loud argument and my slow service made a less than acceptable evening. Food was tasty, but not too original. I have been to both Sent Sovi and Plumed Horse in Saratoga and Manresa, Nick's, Trevese, James Randall, and Dio Deka in Los Gatos, and I have to say that I enjoy the Los Gatos food better. The bar looked like it was fun."

Review 36 for The Plumed Horse

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"Went for Valentine's Day prix fixe dinner. Not worth the $400 price tag. Have been to French Laundry, Manresa, other Michelin restaurants - not up to par. It was a "good" experience, but not great. Music was too loud and not appropriate for environment (50s and 60s standards). Service was pleasant, but not attentive. Kobe beef was tasty but tough. Recommend spending the money on other more worthy restaurants."

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"Our dinning experience was amazing. The staff was very attentive and friendly. 3 of us had ordered the tasting menu, and each course was set down in front of us at exactly the same time.

In addition to the excellent service the food was to die for. The tasting menu consisted of 9 courses each of which is better than the last. There really is no good way to describe the intense flavors and each bite was a burst of sensual pleasure.

The food here is expensive however it is worth every cent.

Review 46 for The Plumed Horse

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"Fabulous service. We had the tasting menu. The food was extraordinary, although their was just too much food - 10 course plus an amuse bouche. We literally could not eat it all. This was disappointing since the it wasn't cheap. I actually was unable to enjoy the final courses. Seven courses may be more resonable especially with such rich foods.
Since it was my birthday they brought a cute little birthday dessert plate which was a nice touch. We turned down the free glass of champagne because I literally could not eat or drink another thing. I would go back again but not order a 10 course tasting menu.

"What a change from the old Plumed Horse! Excellent meals. Upscale decor. Incredible wine list. Two of our party had the Chef's Grand Tasting menu - 8 courses - most were excellent but we debated after if it was a good choice considering the price - $155 per person without wine. A la carte Antelope was perhaps the best of the evening. Definitely order the Black Pepper and Parmesan Souffle - it's on the tasting menu but they are very willing to offer it a la carte."

"I was surprising my date, who is a giant foodie, and he was amazed by my choice in restaurants. The service was amazing! The food was even better! I am a vegetarian and for the chef's sampler that we got before the meal, they switched out one of the tasters with meat for a custom tofu taster. The waiter gave great advice on the best food to get as a vegetarian and for my meat lover date. Review 52 for The Plumed Horse

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"This is our second time dining at the Plumed Horse. As with the first visit, we had a very nice experience, but a few things lowered our overall rating this time around. First, our waiter barely paid attention to us, which accounted for much of the good experience we had the first time around. Second, the menu changed and not only were the choices not quite as appealing as before, but the food we ordered wasn't nearly as tasty. It was good, but not incredible, which is what you would expect from a restaurant of this caliber. Third, the amuse bouche were, as with the first time, a nice touch, but they were exactly the same as what we had over two months ago. Changing them along with the menu would have been a good idea."

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"I took my husband to the Plumed Horse for his birthday as I was curious to revisit the place since it had been renovated and became a Michelin star restaurant. The facelift has given the interior a modern/chic feel. The staff is attentive (but not overbearing) and knowledgeable. And the food is simply outstanding. It truly was a fabulous experience from the moment we set foot inside the restaurant to the time we departed. Also worth mentioning is the variety of amuse bouche dishes presented before our meal; tastefully and delectably done. My husband has thanked me repeatedly for taking him to such a lovely dinner. That said, I am eager to return for another memorable experience."

"Summary: Meal for 2, 2 glasses of wine, shared appetizer, good tip - $160. Food was suitable to the price. Service was outstanding. The room we were in felt like Vegas - that is good or bad, depending on your mood (over the top vs subdued).

I ate antelope over vanilla sweet potato puree, my wife had scallops. Both were good - scallops being slightly better. Shared a lobster consumee - tasty and served from the pot to a bowl at the table.

Extras: trio of canepes, a 'between courses soup', and a dessert mini-trio with the check. The waiter also topped me off with a free splash of wine after I declined a second glass 'just in case.' I actually liked all of these extras more than the main course - they were all interesting and gr

"This was my first time to the Plumed Horse and I was definitely impressed. I loved all the little "extra" tastes that were included in our meal. We started with multiple amuse-bouche and were served more between each course as well as at the end of the meal. That made the meal that much more extraordinary. No real negatives to this restaurant, though it is pricey and the staff, while attentive, really stretch out the meal. We were there for just over 2 hours."

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"Food was as good as any restaurant I have ever eaten. Very creative and flavorful sauces.Service was a not up to the same standard as the food. Slow between courses and slow to return to table for additional services. The food and wine list were so good that I plan to return when in the area."

Review 65 for The Plumed Horse

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"We went for New Years Eve and the restaurant seemed very over-booked. We waited half an hour for our table and the courses were served a bit too slowly. That said, the waitstaff & owner were very gracious and attentive and did everything they could to make the dining experience enjoyable, which it was. They gave us several glasses of complimentary champagne and a complimentary wine pairing for one of the courses, which was excellent. The food preparation, presentation, and flavors were superb. The entree portion could have been a bit more generous but the portions for the other courses were spot on. Overall, we had a lovely New Years experience complete with hats, crowns, noisemakers, champagne, and cozy fire in the chic lounge."

Review 66 for The Plumed Horse

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"Nice. A bull's eye hit for a fine dining experience. The New Year's prix-fix was interesting enough for some unusual sensations (e.g. the foie gras with some lovely remoulade, I forget what exactly). The wine pairings they offered indicates their wine selection is probably outstanding, and their sommelier excellent. I would go again in an instant for any meaningful occasion. A bit pricey."

Review 67 for The Plumed Horse

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"The tasting menu was fantastic, and the wine pairing went perfectly. Such wonderful thought and execution behind each dish; the only thing I put into my mouth all night which I didn't love was a very spicy side garnish with the Kobe beef. Other than that, food and wine was delicious from beginning to end. And service was lovely. Only negative -- the room is chilly, both literally (could be a couple of degrees warmer) and in terms of decor. The warm wooden walls are mostly hidden in the dark, the modern overhead lights are interesting but shed no warm light, and the candles on the table were oddly out of sync with the rest of the decor."

"We had a fabulous dining experience. The Plumed Horse is a wonderful restaurant with fantastic service and food. We had the Chef's tasting menu. Review 69 for The Plumed Horse

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"One of the best restaurants I have been to, just make sure you bring the pants with the deep pockets to dinner. Food was amazing, just keep in mind this establishment produces plates that are focused on presentation hence their portions are not as big. Service is perfect. The waiters make life easy for you as you want try everything and not miss out on something amazing to try...which is inevitable anyway. I highly recommend this restaurant."

Review 70 for The Plumed Horse

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"Our first visit here was on New Year's Eve for our wedding anniversary. The menu was excellent of course, but we would really like to come back for their bar menu. Best vodka tonic I have ever had. Great service. The decor was not what I expected, but elegant nonetheless. As far as fine dining in Northern California is concerned it's up there on the list. Would recommend to try the pre-fixe menu at least once. It's a more friendly and relaxed atmosphere than most fine dining establishments. The sommelier, Jeff, is a very nice gentleman."

Review 71 for The Plumed Horse

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"The food was outstanding, the service was even better!. I was however, disappointed in the layout of the dining area. The ambiance in the dinning room did not match the elegance of the rest of the restaurant at all.
The bar area on the other hand is terrific! I meet my girlfriends there for a drink time and again after work since it is so relaxing and takes the stresses of the day away. And the truffle fries are to die for!

Review 72 for The Plumed Horse

Overall Rating 2.0 out of 5 (Fair)
"We were highly disappointed in the New Years Eve dinner. The food was less than memorable and actually had both of us hungry afterwards. The service was poor. For example, the wait between courses was too long, we felt like we were just one of many and our main waiter rarely checked on us to see how we were doing. In fact, I was never offered a second drink (Mr. XYZ, would you like another gin and tonic?) and for dessert, never asked if we would like coffee. He didnt even say Happy New year. We do not plan on coming back."

Review 74 for The Plumed Horse

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"The Plumed Horse fulfills a niche for the Silicon Valley new rich or new rich wannabees. More mature patrons may find the seating uncomfortable and the decor harsh and possibly arrogant. For our taste, it is trying a bit too hard to be hip. Still, this is a great restaurant, one that has a vast, although very expensive wine list, and employs a well-trained staff that is up to world class standards of service. The menu is innovative and generally well prepared, although the duck breast was disappointing. The free treats between courses were delicious and varied. This is the place to go if showing-off to a date or guests is your goal, and you don't mind $100 a head for the privilege. The Plumed Horse won't disappoint."

Review 76 for The Plumed Horse

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"A bit of dissapointment this time - my husband's portion of the soup was so small, did not get poured evenly. The duck breast was so chewy, that it was so laborious to cut with the knife, which is quite dull. Our guest left 3-4 pieces of the meat on her plate. She too had a difficult time cutting the duck meat.

Overall, what mattered most was that my son, who was home from New York for Christmas, was satisfied and impressed as usual, and will return again. Oh, next time, I will ask for a table in the back -too much traffic for me near the wine cellar.

"One of my family's favorite restaurant. It deserves the Michelin stars afforded to it. We place this restaurant in the same category as The French Laundry, Per Se, Daniel's and Gary Danko. We have been to all these 3-2- Michelin Star rest, and I would put The Plumed Horse up there.

Review 85 for The Plumed Horse

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"We were quite overwhelmed by the staff which kept appearing almost every 10 minutes, yet made a quite few errors, some of them real doozies. There seemed quite an effort to put on big show of being attentive, but somehow the substance was missing. While the menu was quite exotic, it was heavy on very fish items (not my favorite) and not that many total entre items to choose from. All in all, my partner and I gave it an 8 out of 10, which for the price paid ($$$$$$)is not that much of a compliment."

"Went with a group of 4, had to change reservations from 7:30 to 6:30 and they were able to accommodate (not easy as they were fully booked). We all ordered the "Tasting Menu" (~9 courses). Overall the dishes were very good. Three of the selections were "excellent" (one was the chef's "signature dish"). We asked that they accelerate the service because one person had to get somewhere. The "menu" typically takes ~3.5-4 hours and they were able to have us finished in 2:15."

Review 90 for The Plumed Horse

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"I recently took my mom and wife out to dinner at the Plumed Horse for their respective birthdays. My mom had not been to the Plumed Horse for over 10 years, and wanted to see what the re-modeled restaraunt was like. Wow has it changed. The ambiance was modern and nice, but very different from what it had been before (Victorian home like setting). The ambiance didn't bother me though; what did make our visit less than memorable was the menu. I was not impressed with the offerings; let's just say it had some pretty "unique" things on the menu and wow were they pricey. Our palette is not that sophisticated I guess! I don't think it was worth the $$$$$ (very pricey)."

"Dining at The Plumed Horse was a wonderful experience! The service was superb, the food was delicious, and the ambiance was perfect. The only "complaint" we had was with the timing between courses. Good food should take time to be enjoyed and we felt a bit rushed when our entrees arrived before we were completely finished with our starters. Not a big deal, but the kitchen should slow things down just a bit. We will DEFINITELY be returning to The Plumed Horse in the future."
