nopa is a San Francisco gathering place north of the Panhandle, serving urban rustic food and specializing in organic wood-fired cuisine. We serve simple food created with seasonal ingredients sourced from local purveyors.
"What can I possible add to what hasn't already been said about Nopa. Clearly a top "SF restaurant" that does it all and does it all very well. Hip, cool, yet comfortable enough for out of towners and older folks who want a good meal to not feel out of place. I love that the place stays open late and have found it to be regularly packed after11pm on weekends. Cocktails are superb and wine list is top notch. The Nopa bartenders are second to none - hands down - in how well they handle the demanding crowd dining at the bar or those waiting for a table. The servers can at times be a bit uneven or erratic. This place shows no signs of slowing down or resting on its laurels - my guess is it will be around for a long time. Lucky us!"

"Was able to get a reservation after catching a concert at the Bill Graham Civic Center, was quickly seated and ordered the pork chop, unbelievable. Highly recommend ordering it, but tempted to try many other things on their menu, in particular the flat breads which I heard about from the Food Network's "Best thing I ever ate." We will definitely be back!"

"NOPA has been on our 'To Do' list for quite some time and finally made a trip up to the City from the Peninsula to have dinner with out-of-town friends. We made our dinner reservation one month ahead as recommended by many reviews. Dress is casual and bar scene is vibrant. All four of us agreed that it was one of the top meals we have ever enjoyed. Two had the salmon which they said was excellent in both flavor and texture as well as being cooked to perfection. My friend and I both enjoyed the duck with cherry sauce and greatly enjoyed every delicious bite. We all shared the special appetizer of ribs which were fall off the bone tender. Service cold have been a bit more attentive. We were not offered bread and had to ask for it."

"...in both good and bad ways. The good was the menu and staff, the bad was how long to get a reservation HERE? And surprised as I expected a little more than surfers wrapped in towels at the bar...something which has been perceived as quite the coveted spot...just fell a bit short for me."

"Our meal at Nopa had two average appetizers, two out of this world entrees, one great dessert, and one terrible dessert. Overall - a mixed experience though the good was good enough to go back for. Wait times for the food are very long so don't go there starving!"

"Our first time here and at 6:30 Sat night, busy as expected but still open tables to be found unless they were reserved. Bar scene was active and crowd not as young as expected. Mixed group of people, comfortable, nice feel to place, open ceilings. Service pleasant and bustling. Portions very adequate for a ni-ce place. Don't expect belly busting, but I did have to take my pork chop home. The halibut was gone. Next time I want to try the lamb, looked good at neighbors table. Parking not great here."

"The wait staff is friendly and attentive. This is a great place for a special occassion, business dinner or after work snack and cocktails. While the atmosphere is stylish it is not snobby and the staff is refreshingly down to earth while still having a unique hip appearance. For a full meal it is on the pricey side but if you want a little treat sit at the bar and have a smaller dish or dessert. I can't speak to a normal dinner party but I was there for a special event and we spent about three hours at our table. Not once did we feel rushed. I for one enjoy a long sit down dinner and find these days even pricey restaurants are trying to rush you out the door. You can do plenty of people watching and try out some unique dishes. Enjoy!"

"Super good, creative food. Great atmosphere. Rustic, interesting menu..... Service is very nice but perhaps under-staffed? Mostly young wait help which detracts from the level of sophistication one would expect at a place like Nopa."

"Maybe my 15th time eating here over the few years. On my last visit the service wasn't worth much at all. Greetings and service from the host, manager and server was barely positive. This is unusual and our second course was obviously fired late as we waited way too long.
I hope this was just a bad day"

"My girlfriend and I had a wonderful meal here and the wait staff were well informed and helpful. The place is very popular and packed even on a Wednesday night. The food is definitely worth the effort and the kitchen accommodated our dietary needs with any fuss. The roast chicken was the best I've ever had."

"Loved dining at Nopa! As good as everyone said it would be! I never realized how close it was to my house. Just a 10 minute walk so I will be sure to come in for drinks. The cocktail list was fun and different. My boyfriend and I came in with another couple and we shared a few appetizers and two main courses since we could not decide. Pork chop and burger were by far the best I have ever had!"

"Nopa has a beautiful, large, sunlit, high-ceiling room with a long bar, tables, booths and balcony seating. We went for the first time for a crowded Easter Sunday brunch not knowing what to expect. The service and food lived up to their strong local reputation. We were seated exactly on time. The specialty cocktails were tasty, and the grilled multi-grain bread with fig jam was great. On that day, it was a high-energy room but we didn't feel crowded or rushed. They have a large communal table in the main dining area. Definitely on my "next time in SF" list for dinner."

"Many high end restaurants rely on a certain amount of novelty for their appeal; they bring you new experiences, and novel combinations of flavors. That's great, but it's not what Nopa does; they rely on being very very good instead.
Everything I had at Nopa was quite straightforward, but flawlessly executed. Actually, I take that back; my drink was quite complex and not what I expected, though also very good. Clearly I'll have to try more things, but based on what I've seen so far, they can do no wrong.
The service was extremely good, the balcony area quite pretty and not too noisy.
We'll definitely be back."

"Went for my husband's birthday, with a late night reservation, since we were visiting post-ballet. Absolutely loved the food and wine, didn't enjoy the upstairs seating. Felt isolated and the service was a bit off. Not their fault, of course, since they are very popular and need to seat as many as they can, but that upstairs venue just isn't as special as dining in the main area... Will definitely return with this in mind."

"Everything was good but my main course (the roast chicken). The whole thing was dry as a bone. After i commented on it, my friend who had a birds eye view of the kitchen informed me that 8 chicken plates had been sitting Off to the side the entire time we were there. Went with 6 and between all of us we ordered a decent chunk of the menu. While everything other than the chicken was good... it wasn't amazing...certainly didn't live up to the hype. I'd still like to try the brunch but I won't be going again for dinner."

"Overall dining there was a very nice experience. We came at the beginning of the "rush hour" and had a very nice table upstairs with a view of the bar scene and the kitchen. It was not too noisy to have a conversation. I had a very nice glss of wine and my husband had a few interesting beers. The appetizer of sliced halibut was outstanding. I had a black cod, which was excellent, but the bed of lentils with bacon was salty, and altogether a puzzling choice for the delicate black cod. In my opinion, it would be more suitable with a more hearty meat course. The entree of leg of lamb was good but the meat was a bit chewy, not delicate. The dessert of lemon tart was quite good, and delivered with a birthday candle, as requested."

"Food-wise, brunch was very good, but the wait for the food was very long. At first we found the server's slow approach to serving very unnerving - "Would like water?" He gets the water, puts it down, walks away. A while later, "What may I get you to drink?" We order our drinks. One arrives. Eventually, the next one arrives. Still later, "May I take your order?" (finally!) However, after seeing how long it took for our food to arrive after we ordered, perhaps the very slow start was meant to slow us down so that our expectations of the restaurant's pace would be very laid back - which was just far too slow for me. I like a leisurely brunch, but this leisurely pace was forced upon us - not our choosing."

"Nopa has become a neighborhood institution over the years and, you can see why: it is a unique venue for its use of space, vibrant scene and gourmet food, wine and cocktail selection. Small disappointment for me: not enough Vegan or fish selections so that my choices felt very limited. It's also become so popular that it's tough to get a reservation, even on a weeknight. The place was positively hopping at 9 p.m. on a Wednesday, for instance. Upstairs dining feels intimate, special and relaxing. The place harkens to L.A. or NYC but not SF with its liberal use of community tables downstairs and cozy nooks upstairs. Prices are not cheap but still a good value. Wine list offers some solid selections though may reach a bit too much."
