"Country did not have a handle on their wine cellar. Wine out of stock. 15min search. Waiter left us, without taking a new order until after food arrived.
A simple sorry sir, but here's what I'd recommend, would have been the correct approach."

"I love Town, so figured same chef, should be great. Wow, was I wrong. The only option was a tasting menu, but we probably would have ordered it anyway. Service was slow and they didn't collect/replace utensils between courses. The 1st course, sashimi came out with an overabundance of salt and raw red pepper on it. The 2nd course, lobster, was inedible and had a strange briney taste to it. The ravioli were supposed to be foie gras and black truffle (sounds delightful) but tasted like the ravioli had been made a day in advance and re-heated. The veal was overcooked and served with the same sauce from the ravioli, but the braised cheek piece was excellent. We didn't even stay for dessert. Such a disappointment and not worth the $$."

"Four women had dinner on Friday night. Conscious with eating small portion + expected snow storm within 4-5 hrs, we told our waiter that we would skip appetizers and have entrees & dessert (we were celebrating a birthday of 1 of us). She told us that the entree would take about 20 minutes and was somewhat forcible that we would have to try their app. So we did. It turned out that the cheese plate came about 40 min later and the entrees 1 1/2hr later. Having seen only 2 couples other than us during our entire dining, it made no sense. Food was good and ambiance was excellent. Recommend for a couple who want to spend hours in a quiet place with decent food."

"Though I hadn't realized that they had ostensibly converted the ritzier upstairs dining room to an events space, it was (and still is) the downstairs "club-like" restaurant that gave the restaurant its unique character as a place to go for a quiet and relaxing dinner with very good food and wine.
Unfortunately, it seems to have slipped a bit both in terms of food selection (and quality?) and service. Though still a place I will go to on occasion, my latest dinner there (Feb '10) didn't live up the (albeit higher) expectations I had had based on my previous visits."

"The waiter spilled one of Country's julep cocktails on my client. The waiter said, "It's good luck." No apology. The waiter took the half-spilled drink and returned it to the bar. The drink came back to the table with blackberry brandy poured into it. We returned the drink saying it wasn't what my client had ordered (blackberry brandy wasn't in the menu description of the julep, and wasn't in the other two juleps--three of us had ordered the same thing.) At this point the bartender walked over with a bottle of blackberry brandy and poured it into the other two drinks so that all 3 looked the same. They didn't want to waste the drink that had spilled so they masked it by adding brandy to the original and other two. UNBELIEVABLE!"

"Good for small, business, breakfast meeting. Staff was pleasant, but the kitchen was rather slow (2nd time). The Carlton Hotel is a great place to stay for a quick in and out of NYC if one is in the Madison & 28th area. Small rooms, but inexpensive, clean, & comfortable. The Country Restaurant is attached & convenient, as is the bar. Expect hotel restaurant quality food, not fine dining, but ok."

"The restaurant was almost empty on a Saturday evening, which we found worrying, but the food was excellent and so was the service. The restaurant has changed since the formal dining room upstairs was closed and perhaps that is the reason for the desolation, but we did not mind the quiet meal at all."

"The restaurant was weirdly empty at 8pm on a Saturday which isn't usually a good sign. The service was not great - our waitress was not knowledgeable about the menu or wine list and was extremely casual. The food was pretty good. We had heard good things about Country a few years ago but clearly it's not a hot spot anymore."

"The food was good, but I had a real problem with the service being too rushed. As soon as we even paused for a second, they swooped in to take our plates and bring in the next course immediately. I had to ask them not to take my plate once because I wasn't done, and then again, my son was actually still clearly eating from his plate and they tried to take his plate away. And then the next course was brought in immediately with no pause. There was no reason for it either. There were plenty of empty tables. And a 20% gratuity was added to our party of 4. I'm not sure why."
