Flora is housed in an Art Deco architectural gem in the Uptown district of Oakland. We serve a selection of reinvented American classics accompanied by an extensive menu of prohibition era cocktails.
"Have dined at Flora with friends after Art Walk, on birthdays, with my sons and their girlfriends, and this last time had brunch with hubby for Father's Day, and each time was special and different. Flora is like a chic New York restaurant with Oakland warmth and fantastic California grown food."

"We enjoyed Flora's great big pot of Blue Bottle coffee, the warm donettes, and a fine pork shoulder hash. If you are in the Uptown area, or going to the Fox or the Paramount, this is an excellent choice."

"My partner and I dined at Flora for our 5 year anniversary. They sat us in a great booth seat that was off to the side and romantic and they even printed " Happy 5 Years" on our menus! It was really beautiful, special, delicious cocktails and food and we loved our waitress. We're very happy with our experience there and are also looking forward to checking out their bar next door "Fauna"."

"We had dinner at Flora this past Saturday (a group of five) and the service was great - they let me sit at the table while I waited for the rest of my party - a good 30+ minutes but they didn't seem to mind and were good about checking back with me and getting my drinks from the bar. The food was tasty (we had the flat iron steak, salmon, pork loin and burger) and of course the butterscotch pudding for dessert which was outstanding. My only complaint would be the service from the kitchen was slow - we waited quite a while for our food and it wasn't that busy at that point (after 9:00PM) and it was pretty loud but I would go back - good vibe and nice/attentive staff."

"My wife and I went there for Saturday brunch with another couple and the food was excellent, and the service was good. However, the place was VERY noisy, too much so for anything like comfortable conversation. Probably a good spot for young people who like a very 'lively' environment, but older folks might want to look elsewhere. Too bad, because the food really was good."

"I love the feeling of the interior-- visual people will love the wallpaper. Cocktails are really nice. the pork shoulder was just outstanding, with tart cherries, the saltiness of the meat went nicely with it, and my friend's salmon was excellent, too. so was the fried squid!!"

"We eat dinner at Flora's fairly often, and I'm a fan. Friends have recommended brunch here, so we went this past weekend. While the menu looks appetizing, the food fell a little short of expectations. Fried chicken was underseasoned, variant of croque monsieur was drowned in bechamel sauce, which was just crazy overkill on the richness. Coffee not to our liking - so bland I wonder if they gave us decaf by mistake. But the cocktail was very good.
I'll be back, but we'll stick with dinner and pass on brunch."

"Flora is housed in a great art deco building (the former flower mart) and the inside decor lives up to the outside promise. The menu consists of a number of small plates and a half dozen or so larger entrées. I recommend sharing to get as many different tastes as possible. Each dish has a number of different ingredients, which the chef brings together like an orchestra leader creating a symphony. There is an excellent adventuresome cocktail list with both classic drinks and inventive creations. The wine list is extensive with many French, Italian, and Spanish selections. The best ingredient of all, however, was service by Erin. She was very knowledgeable about the dishes and ingredients, was accommodating, friendly, and professional."

"Very friendly and attentive service, and very well made 'comfort' dishes are marred by small portions and high prices relative to the serving size which detracts from the overall value of dining. These are attributes of San Francisco fine dining, but Oakland? They should take a hint from Paradiso in San Leandro which serves SOMA like dishes in a SOMA atmosphere with San Leandro size portions..."

"I tried Flora for celebrating my friend's birthday, having heard that it has excellent food. How true! The choice is not huge, but adequate for different dining needs/preferences/allergies, and the combinations of ingredients are unique and very delicious. The staff is also very accommodating and friendly. Every morsel that we ate was truly unique and fabulous. They even brought a free birthday dessert treat for my friend with a candle, a yummy and special surprise. And a block away on 19th there is an amazing new bronze sculpture outdoor art square. Downtown Oakland is really changing in a good way. I am a Berkeley resident."

"honestly, flora has the best cocktails in town! oh, and amazing food, too. loved the squid starter - it was way more special than your average calamari appetizer. the vegetarian option was a falafel plate that had somewhat incongruous ingredients, but everything was absolutely delicious. the salmon was cooked perfectly rare and accompanied by faro, rice and veggies. i had forgotten how much i love this place and am eager to return!"

"Loved the decor, in keeping with the restored movie theater across the street & with the vintage building it is located in. My dinner was fabulous, a delicate blend of flavors that enhanced my pork & complemented the polenta & vegies that went with it. My salad was a great mix of greens & cheese 7 dressing. the dessert to blended espresso, ice cream & cookie. Picked a wine from Argentina a Malbec that wrapped it all up . Can't wait to go back & bring friends!"

"I booked this restaurant after reading good reviews of it, and they were right! We celebrated a bday celebration over brunch, and yes, the food was excellent, the art-deco decoration was so nice to be around. Very much enjoyed it. I highly recommend it! The restaurant had the special touch of personalizing the menus for the table.... very nice!"

"Must admit I have not dined in the down town Oakland area for many years having once been an Oakland resident, so Saturday evenings dinner for a friends birthday was a wonderful surprise. Flora is a wonderful restaurant with high standards without being portentous or snobbish - a great break from San Francisco and Berkeley watering holes."

"We went to Flora to celebrate a college graduation (Go Bears!). The food was nicely prepared and tasty, the veggies were fresh and, from what we understand, local. The service was beautiful. This restaurant is nice, but not stuffy. I think its a perfect place for a celebration, a romantic date, a casual bite or even just cocktails Yummy...."

"The 3 of us agreed that the food was excellent. I would, however, never go back. The cacophony, indeed roar, was excruciating. I have never been in such a noisy restaurant. We couldn't wait to get out of there.

"I went to Flora for my bachelorette party and again for a friend's graduation dinner. Both experiences were wonderful. We had excellent service and the food was very good. It's the handcrafted cocktails that really tip the scale in Flora's favor. They are creative, delicious, and well-mixed."

"We went in for a mid week dinner to this place and were not impressed. First and foremost the service was terrible. The girl who was serving us took about 10 minutes to acknowledge us and then returned with our drink order another fifteen minutes later. She was over her head with tables. Apparently the bus boys were given the task of actually serving us. About three different bus boys brought us everything but the entrees. My flank steak came out cold and under cooked, but I was starving. The hamburger was mostly bread and condiments, and was nothing interesting. She basically just said "are you ready to order ?" Overall we had a horrible experience and I will not be going back to waste another $100 on a very subpar restaurant ."

"The deco building is beautiful from the outside, but nothing out-of-the-ordinary inside. Since Flora is directly across Telegraph from the Fox Oakland, it could be handy in that regard. The food was fine, but not memorable enough for me to return, given all the other options we have in the East Bay and SF. The servers were friendly and knowledgeable."

"Beautiful art-deco restaurant, fabulous bar, flawless cocktails. But, sadly, poor service; consistently slow, inattentive, with long delays and poor follow up. food and drinks were good enough to bring us back, but having dined there 3x w/ same poor service, don't think we'll dine there again, but we'll return for drinks and dessert at the bar.
Also awkward menu with a lot of repetition of ingredients in both the starter plates and entrees. I wanted farro asparagus salad and the salmon entree, but both had farro, making ordering without duplication difficult. Springtime in CA offers a plethora of options, thus no excuse.
Lastly, the restaurant is very loud, so I don't recommend going with more than two people if you want a conversation."

"Flora is a wonderful choice for an event in that part of Oakland or if you're in the neighborhood and want a night out. The food is outstanding, the cocktails are both creative and absolutely delicious. and the desserts--oh, boy. The menu is relatively restricted, so if you're a high maintenance diner, you may be disappointed. The tables are also rather close together; I wouldn't want to propose or have an argument here. But if you're in the mood for a Paris bistro type experience, you have found your restaurant. We will definitely be back any time we're in the Broadway-Grand Avenue area, if only for the caramel pudding--absolutely to die for."

"We were trying to make an 8 PM concert - our reservation was at 6. Should be plenty of time, right? Wrong. The restaurant was not even crowded. Our meals finally arrived 15 minutes before we absolutely had to leave, after we had asked several times. And...they were cold. The server was inappropriately cheerful and upbeat about how soon our dishes would arrive. I'm sure her intentions were good, but her ability to influence the kitchen was nil. The ambience is attractive, but unpleasantly noisy. I would not return nor recommend this place to anyone."

"The food and drinks were good, but pricey. The food portions were small. My husband had a burger, which was pretty good, but it was just a burger. I had grilled quail, which was good. We each had desert, too. But after it was all over, I did not feel satisfied."

"Flora did OK well by our party of three. We're non-meat eaters, and there were nice vegetable dishes on the menu, including some pretty inventive salads (a burrata with homemade pan de mie, salad with crispy morels [in season now!] and arugula [and shrimps, which, OK, I ate, gimme a break, in order to get the morels]). Entrees however were interesting but overprepared. Falafels were _too_ crispy, even blackened -- maybe that's an idea! -- and vegetable underlayers were rendered more as ragus than as discrete items to be enjoyed discreetly."

"The restaurant is unique in that it's restored to the former elegance, ambiance and cocktails of the Art Deco period...and it's fabulous! A visual and gastronomical treat. Two dozen signature cocktails from some of the premier water holes of the Art Deco period (20's. 30's and 40's) Featuring gin in many of the concoctions, they are very reminiscent of a fantastic slice of American design history. We were in town for The Art Deco Preservation Ball at the nearby fully restored Paramount theater (also an unbelievable gem from the 30's)and Flora had featured a special menu just for Ball attendees. Had the salmon and pork loin chop...both amazing. Wonderful salads and don't miss the salted caramel pudding dessert. Well worth the effort to go!"

"Way, way, way to loud. Sound bouncing from every direction. Very difficult to hold conversation across table. Was such an effort I was mentally exhausted by the end to a point of irritated. I would do something in that room to stop the sound waves, hang something from the ceiling, add cloth to the walls, something. Felt like being in a disco bar trying to have a high class intimate dinner. Wrong menu for atmosphere. Also, my steak had good taste but quite tough. Stringy tendons tough to cut through with knife I was provided. Not a good steak for the price, sorry. Everything else on my plate was good, including desert, and espresso."
