The Modern - Bar Room
The Bar Room at The Modern offers guests a more casual way to experience Chef Gabriel Kreuther’s contemporary French American cuisine in a vibrant and welcoming setting. The Bar Room offers an expansive a la carte menu inspired by Chef Kreuther’s Alsatian roots. The restaurant also boasts an award-winning wine program as well as a carefully curated list of cocktails, beer and spirits. Located adjacent to The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), the Modern’s Bar Room accepts reservations 28 days in advance. The Bar Room also includes a Bar & Lounge area that welcomes guests on a walk-in basis. The restaurant also features a prix-fixe only Dining Room.

"The favorite restaurant of our trip. We even enjoyed it more than Per Se and Le Bernardin - which cost 4Xs more. Food was inventive and delicious. I'm still drooling over the farm egg in a jar with lobster and sea urchin foam and the rabbit fettuccini. The bar room is beautifully designed. Service is exceptional. I simply loved it. There aren't many restaurants in NYC that we choose to revisit simply because there are so many to try. But we will come back here every time!!!"

"I chose this restaurant for lunch with a great friend who was visiting from London.
Despite a little wait for our table, and the need to prompt them about the wait, we had a truly delicious lunch with courteous service.
We could have stayed all afternoon and certainly felt welcome to do so.
The menu is appealing with some interesting options making it quite difficult to choose. However, all our choices were excellent.
It is a popular place and was very busy when we arrived. However, I would highly recommend it. This was my 4th time and I have never been disappointed."

"Conveniently located within the MOMA, the Modern (Bar Room) is a less expensive (but still pricey) option to their more formal dining room. The diner has a tapas-like menu to order from (the portions aren't tiny, but they are small). We ordered 1 dish from each of the 3 selection categories, and with one round of cocktails the bill was nearly $200. This said, the food was delicious - and has been consistently so during each of my prior visits. Service is generally very good, though this time our waitress forgot about us for quite some time and then rushed us at the end - hmm...."

"We have dinned in the Bar Room and the Dining Room on several occasions and always enjoyed the food and service. I think we hit the room on an unusual night, but the overall experience was disappointing. Food - EXCELLENT - though the "cassoulet" could have been better described and duck thigh with beans and frisee (??). Otherwise, all was great.
The service was another matter. (EXCELLENT DESSERTS!)."

"The menu was a bit confusing (rather small plates, one from column A, B and C), and frankly, I would never know what was coming out of the kitchen from the description on the menu. However, the food was spectacular (and well worth the surprise!). One caveat - the portions are very small, and one does need to order a lot of (expensive) food to feel sated. But all told, our dinner was lovely, and I would come back for a special occasion."

"With the Modern restaurant closed on Monday, and drizzle outside, the Bar Room was a good choice. Of course, it was the only game in town (MOMA that is), so it was at full capacity. The kitchen handled the press with ease; food arrived timely, and hot from the stove/broiler. Nice lunch-size portions. The by-the-glass wine list was well selected; and the server brought the bottle(s) to the table so that we could confirn what we were drinking; a practice we have seen at 5 star restaurants, and appreciate where ever it happens."

"After my unfortunate prior experience, the manager, Dino, personally reached out to me to apologize and to offer a gift card to give them another try. I notified the Dino of my visit and went with a friend. It's amazing how different experiences can be at the same restaurant! The service was fabulous. Dino and his staff were warm, attentive, yet relaxed and well paced. Dino also sent us a few extra dishes to try. The food was great and my friend who isn't an adventurous eater couldn't stop raving about his steak. He even devoured our shared scallop and duck, even though he claims to not like these at all normally. I am so happy to have gone back and grateful to Dino and his staff for our great time. Thank you all so much!!"

"Started out with a delicious glass of the Vouvray Chenin Blanc, sweet, fruity and complex. Then the outstanding mushroom soup, which tasted like essence of wild mushrooms, followed by the duck leg confit a l'orange. The sauce was just ok, but the meat was extraordinarily tender, the skin crisp, and no fat to speak of, just the way a confit should be. For dessert our waiter recommended the Modern Sundae, a melange of chocolate and cherry in several forms. It was very good. Others at my table raved about the smoked salmon appetizer, the lobster gnocchi, and the rabbit tagliatelle. Service here is top-notch, as one would expect at a Danny Meyer restaurant."

"Really enjoyed my experience here! My friend and I both had the South by Southwest cocktail - delish! Our appetizers were wonderful (i had the steak tartare and she had the goat cheese terrine) and our mains were superb and beautifully presented. The scallops were sweet and perfectly prepared. Service was friendly and the place is just beautiful! The only thing our server struggled with was explaining the cheese selections. They don't have a cart, just a menu, so we needed some guidance which was tough for him to provide. But all in all a very pleasant experience."

"On the positive side, the food was creative, well prepared and well presented. The ambiance was modern and elegant. We were seated right on time. On the negative side, the noise level makes it hard to carry on a conversation. Service was a little slow. The portion size of the dishes was too small. Most dishes, including main courses, were done as appetizer portions or smaller. The normal approach of ordering an appetizer and a main course does not work here. One needs to order three or more dishes to get enough food for a regular meal. This was not explained to us by the wait staff."

"I have been eating at the Bar Room since it opened. It has always been excellent, but I must say it was greater than great today! I had the new salad, which was delicious, and the tasty poussin. My friend had the mushroom tart and the spaetzel and we shared the fruit "carpaccio" and a parfaitish dish that was definitely 4 star! Everyone I take here wants to go back. In fact, the friend I was with today ALWAYS wants to go back. The food is creative, the service is typical Meyers -- warm, attentive, efficient, and altogether pleasing. I'm so ready to return that I will be doing so again this week, with friends who insist on meeting there!"

"A very nice experience overall. Food was very good - not insanely "to die for" but very very good. As a side note the truffled popcorn at the bar was really really tasty.
Service was amazing - everyone from host - to bartender - to coat checker to waiter was really nice / sweet.
The willingness and ability to transfer bar bill to table without a moments hesitation was a nice departure from the normal "I'm sorry sir, we can't do that - you must settle up here first" excuse most places use.
While The Modern is not a inexpensive restaurant - I would say that it was worth the $ and is a great addition to the NYC restaurant scene."

"Wonderful ambiance fit for a restaurant in MoMa. Everything about the Modern feels like art from the decor, furnishings, servers and the food itself. Portions are small and pricey; you're not going to get full or find a bargain. Instead you will find finely crafted food created with skill and attitude that is almost as lovely to look at as it is to eat. The tuna tartar is sublime; the best I've ever had.
