Located at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), The Modern is a fine dining restaurant serving Chef Gabriel Kreuther’s Alsatian-inspired, French American cuisine with warm hospitality in a spectacular setting. The Modern’s Bar Room offers guests a more casual, cosmopolitan experience. The menu features an array of over 30 savory dishes served as small and medium sized plates with desserts by Pastry Chef Marc Aumont. The extensive wine list includes over 900 international selections; also offered is an exciting array of cocktails. Set in one of the world’s leading art institutions, design plays a major role in every aspect of the dining experience. Guests can enter the restaurant via its own street level entrance, as well as through the Museum itself. The restaurant is open beyond Museum hours including Tuesdays when the Museum is closed. In addition to the bar room, guests are also welcomed in the dining room for a more refined experience. Reservations are accepted 28 days in advanc

"One of the best lunch scenes in NYC. European art lovers, classy seniors, businessmen from the neighborhood, gorgeous women ... I often take out-of-town friends and they're always impressed. Beautiful room, wonderful, inventive food. My only quibble would be the price per mouthful. With very delicate portions at a premium price, it's not the place to come if you're a hearty eater or looking to watch the dollars."

"We enjoyed the respite of this restaurant after a hectic hour and a half in Tim Burton land at his delightful (but crowded) MoMA exhibit.Our server was friendly, and assisted us easily with a kid-friendly menu selection (as we were traveling with our 8 year old.)She also suggested a lovely wine for th wgrownups that paied well with our lunch courses. Our food itself was exquisite and beautifully created, and again, graciously served."

"The food was wonderful - especially scallops with an amazing beet sauce. The menu, however, is quite limited for non-meat eaters. (We do eat fish sometimes; otherwise, there would have been nothing on the menu for us.) It's expensive, so it's not a place we're likely to return to any time soon. But it will stay on our list for very special occasions."

"The Modern Bar is quite fabulous! The long bar is beautiful and the cocktail tables are
perfect for small plates or dinner. The Bar room also has tables for those that want a
more traditional dining experience.

I have been to the Modern many times, but during my recent visit to NY I went from being
smitten to falling in love. The food is perfectly prepared, flavors are balanced with a finish
that is mouthwatering. After a "celebration" day lunch with a friend, I took my husband for
dinner and then we went back the next two nights.

Service is friendly, informed and exceptional in their descriptions of the menu choices.
Dining at the Modern is Art! Enjoy!!!!!!"

"i was shocked at how the foot has gone down at this chic midtown spot. Such an attractive room, but the food was airline quality, and the portions minimal. Very disappointing. The food tasted like a packet of onion soup mix was thrown in to add whatever "flavor" there was. The service was also very spotty, and the very "green" waiter kept disappearing for long periods, while cocktail and water glasses went unfilled. I have eaten at this restaurant several times before and enjoyed it, so am very disappointed at the current state."

"We visited during Restaurant Week as part of an overseas holiday. It was the most unforgettable meal I have ever had, and I found myself comparing the food to everything else we ate on our trip. The confit duck was fabulous, with a delicious cripsy skin even after the dish had cooled. I really love desserts, so when I tried the chocolate dome I didn't want it to end it was that good. I tried a Hinny Kick cocktail, which was also unusually flavoured and very nice. My partner also found his meal to be fantastic and definately a place to beat. The restaurant was quite loud on the night we visited but this added to the cheery atmosphere. The normal menu is a little pricey, but definately worth every cent, and we can't wait to return!"

"We had a reservation and came right on time. We had to wait for 30 minutes in the crowded entrance area, since it was impossible to get a seat at the bar. If you are vegetarian you have a very limited choice. The choice for that was green salad, pumpkin salad, and two main dishes with mushrooms: Mushroom soup and pasta with mushrooms.
Meat dishes where good, but nothing special or unusual. It seems that the menu is created for a big turnaround, big crowds of tourists. That is reflected in the high price of food and wine.
It is also a very loud place for dining experience.
Overall it is kind of a fun place, but I don't think I would go there again."

"We took our two children- 4 years old and 7 months old- here for lunch on a trip to MoMA. What a great experience. They had a high chair waiting for us, and they treated my daughter so well, asking her for her order, catering to her changing needs. My energetic son was fussed over by all...and I haven't even mentioned the food yet. Wonderful. At lunch, all our dishes were tasting portions, which were great to share. My daughter's request to have her duck breast PLAIN was no problem. I will dream about the scallops I had. We'll be back on our next museum visit."

"We had a lovely meal here during our recent visit to New York from the UK. Although it was NYC restaurant week we had booked on a Sunday and the restaurant telephoned in advance to let us know the restaurant week prix-fixe menu would not be offered. We were happy to choose from the a la carte menu though and glad of the pre-warning.
The food was well prepared and tasty. The roasted long-island duck breast was delicious, although I found the dry aged strip loin to be a little lacking in flavour. Our service was attentive but unobtrusive and we would definitely return to this restaurant on our next visit to New York."

"Service was outstanding. Waiter had great menu suggestions and took the time to explain terms we didn't understand. Onion, Bacon, and creme fraiche tart was a great starter. The poached egg with lobster and uni foam was amazing. Duck confit was wonderful and non-alcoholic punch was pleasantly not overly sweet. Chocolate tart was wonderful as well. Great casual but upbeat atmosphere. Definitely worth returning to."

"Incredible meal through and through. Two of us had 3 courses each and one dish was better then the next. One of the best dining experiences I've had in a NYC. What a deal too - we went on a Sunday which is BYO so it was more affordable. Would absolutly recommend,I plan on taking advantage of the Sunday BYO again and will also try the dining room."

"A very happening crowd awaits your arrival...we were ushered off to the bar and had a drink. Alas NO Guinness in the house, REALLY?
Our seating time came and went and I had to re-introduce my self with the Maitre d', where we were promptly seated at a great seating location in the Bar room...the course were served in due course. We started with the Upside down Tuna Tarte and the Roasted LI Duck with
peppercorn-crusted apples and toasted pistachio-truffle dipping saucePan Roasted Veal Sweetbreads. The duck I have to say was a bit rare...Main course was the Red Snapper “en Matelote” and the Duck Confit a l'Orange....
Overall enjoyable, not sure if we would return, didn't leave quite the impression I had hoped."

"Went for Restaurant Week &it was the absolute best Restaurant Week meal we have ever had. They kept most of their regular menu choices for the Week. My boyfried left the choices completely up to our extremely competent waiter. He chose the Alsatian tart, the duck a l'orange, and the chocolate dessert. I had the roasted duck with peppercorn crusted apples & the most amazing pistachio-truffle sauce, the saffron taglietelle with braised rabbits & the cheesecake. It felt like we weren't there for Restaurant Week and we should have been paying much more for the food. It was a trendy restaurant & bar scene as well, which isn't what I was expect. We were completely full at the end; the portions were perfect!!!!! HIGHLY RECOMMEND"

"We took advantage of the $35 Restaurant Week set menu, and it was delicious, and clearly one of the best menu offerings among all restaurants participating during those two weeks. We had many great options per course and they also offered a wine selection with bottles $40 and under. Great value! The first course and desserts were truly wonderful with the mains not being as strong or extraordinary but very solidly executed. The two mains just seemed to need a little more pop or brightness in flavor. Service was good because it was rounded out by the attentive support staff who tended more to refill wine and water and fetch bread and things. Our server was friendly and helpful, but we didn't interact with him much after ordering."

"One of the very few restaurants that has an extensive menu for Restaurant week (10 choices at least for each appetizer, entree and dessert). The wine selection is great; several good wine bottles for $40 or less. I was really impressed. The decor is modern and chic - thought it would be minimalist. The bar has a lot of character as well. Our server was very attentive and helpful in picking a good wine. We were seated right away and the staff was very friendly. Would definitely come back!"

"We ate at the Modern to celebrate our daughter's 24th birthday. The food was divine, the service was both friendly and impeccable. There is nothing I can suggest to improve the experience. I had asked for a candle in my daughter's dessert, which they provided. No singing, nothing embarrassing, just enough to make her feel special. Everything was tasteful and impressive. "The food was good but not great for what it normally would have cost. We went for restaurant week, so it was $35 each with the three smaller plates of food. I read that usually it's $88, and I would hope the portions were a little larger. Even so, it wasn't so good that I would go back again for bigger portions for $88 a person. The bar area is kind of loud. You can still hear the people at your table, but it can be a bit of a challenge. The noise level detracts from the romance of it. The service was good. there were always people buzzing around giving us new forks or clearing plates and filling up water, etc. but our waiter didn't talk. He just pulled out his pad and like looked at us without saying hello. It was kind of odd."

"I had high expectations, based on Zagat ratings, but was disappointed. We all agreed (and we each had something different) that the food was good, but not great. The restaurant week menu was very extensive, much more so than I would have expected. The lamb and goat cheese appetizer was like eating baby food....it was for people without teeth. I also had the duck confit...which again was good, but not great. Best item on the menu was the dark chocolate dessert...which was EXCELLENT, and very light. Cappuccino was great too, but not worth going back for, especially with the normally pricey menu."

Tuna Tarte- A layer of scallions, ccucumbers, and red onions hid underneath neat, soft cubes of tuna. The tuna was fresh. The soft tuna and its crunchier veggie counterparts provided a stark contrast in taste. Overall, I thought this was a pretty standard dish, nothing too amazing, but still good quality.

Pan Roasted Veal Sweetbreads - This was a challenging and interesting dish. First of all the veal was lightly tossed in flour and then seared on each side. It only had a subtle aftertaste of veal. The sweetbread that accompanied it had a waffle-like texture with a hint of ginger. The caramelized turnips were hidden underneath the two and some greens. I never thought I would enjoy turnips, but these were amazing.

"We have eaten here before and have always loved the food. This time we reserved for 1:30pm, but due to lingering diners were not seated until after 2pm. You would think the staff would have anticipated this on a Saturday lunch. Anyway, we sat in the adjacent lounge area with glasses of wine, which were not added to our bill, which was quite nice of them, given our wait."

"Lunch between AM & PM sessions @ MoMA. Food ranged from very good to outstanding. Service was professional and friendly. Expensive: Lunch for four people consisting of two courses each and two shared desserts, shared bottle of wine ($105), no coffee, including tax and tip came to $75 per person. Menu organization is better as a concept than in execution, e.g. - Page 1 and Page 2 are appetizer sized portions and Page 3 is semi-entree sized portion. Choose whatever. One appetizer and one semi-entree made a good sized lunch. I guess for dinner I would have to choose the Dining Room or add an additional course."

"I have been to the Modern several times and I do not even live in the US so you can imagine how much I love it. It is always an amazing experience. I have dined both in the dining room and in the bar room and I think that I like the bar room better. The bar room offers
several small dishes that gives you an opportunity to taste several outstanding dishes. The service is always perfect, not stuffy.
Was there this weekend for lunch on Sunday to celebrate with friends and family after we bought my daughter's wedding dress, it
was the perfect ending to a perfect weekend in NY.
The desserts beignets were the best ever dessert the girls ever had! My favourite dish is the upside down tuna tarte, unbelievable! I take it every time!"

"We ate in the bar room. (I don't think the principle dining room is open for lunch.) The menu is divided into three sections - two are supposedly appetizer size and one is billed as "half a main portion size". All were larger than we expected and all were excellent. In spite of the fact that the place was packed, the service was great. I believe the restaurant now has three stars (at least two) and they are deserved. Do not expect a quiet environment - it is a little noisy, but very vibrant. This was not our first time and the experience has always been consistent. (If you are planning on seeing the Tim Burton exhibit at the museum, you should reserve for that too.)"

"Food was excellent, but if you are very hungry-NOT good- small portions (and I am a small person!!) but I like a little bigger main course --- and the theory of "tasting" all that the chef has to offer gets VERY costly and too " disorganized in terms of the palate"!!!
I must reiterate though that the food was scrumptious!

Bar dining - way tooooooo noisy--we sat near the kitchen and the staff was hovering and "talking shop" while we were dining- very annoying and unprofessional!"

"I think the menu needs updating and it doesn't all make sense, at least not to me (why is duck breast on menu 2 and duck confit on menu 3?) And the service this visit was noticeably not up to the level it was when I was last there in July '09. But the food and presentation are still "top-notch Danny Meyer-ish" which is to say, superb. "What a superb experience. I can't say more about it. Went on a Monday night to the Bar Room. The food was outstanding, and the portions more substantial than I would have expected, especially given the discalimer on the menu that they serve half-size entrees. The wine list is a delight, and the sommelier helped us piece together an exciting tasting experience from Alsace and Friulli, two often under-represented regions. The space itself is beautifully designed, and a few glimpses out into the Noguchi sculpture garden give a realy charge. A memorable evening."

"(CON'T FROM BELOW) The waitress was not truthful about what happened to 3 of our 4 entrees. First she said that 2 of them weren't cooked properly so the chef wanted to re-do them. Then she brought out 3 identical entrees but we had ordered 2 different ducks. So they had to cook a new entree and she kept saying that it would be out any minute; it was just being plated (not true). Anyway, she never came back after that although we saw her in the dining room. Another waitress served us dessert. Needless to say, our friends who had never been before will probably never go back."

"We definitely enjoyed our meal at the Bar Rooom at the Modern. Wonderful setting and attentive service, and the food was delicious. I didn't quite get the concept with the three different categories... I actually ordered one from each, and then didn't really feel like desert. Next time I'd have a better idea of how to order."

"It was outstanding, in every way possible; the food was delicious, the service was polite and promt, made good presentation of the wine list and gave two excelent suggestions, the space itself was perfect in every detail (the flowers, the decoration, the light, the location...what best finale to a visit to the MoMA than a remarkable lunch at The Modern). It was my first visit to NY - the first of many, I hope - and it was my favourite restaurante, without a doubt."

"Brought a friend to celebrate her birthday & it could not have been nicer. The cocktails are amazing. Our server was delightful (thanks Kellie). The food is terrific and the small plates make it possible to try a variety of items. Loved that they offered half bottles of some decent wines (since we started with those tasty cocktails). Being that we were celebrating a birthday, they sent over an additional dessert as a gift. How nice! The only complaint I would have is the noise level and that's only if you expect a quiet meal. It's a happening bar/restaurant so it's lively."

"The Modern has lost its luster. After a pleasant greeting by the host, the rest of the dining experience was a dull and disappointing experience. First, we were seated in Siberia in a three quarters empty restaurant. Then the waitress had an attitude of annoyed, rushed boredom. This was matched by everyone else who served us as well. Having just come from a wonderful performance at New York City Center which had put us in a great mood, we found The Modern was a consistent downer. We were always hopeful it would get better, but neither the food nor the service showed any bright spots. For entertaining an out-of-town guest, it turned into an embarrassment of a choice for dinner. I will not be returning."

"The Bar at The Modern is a sleek, glamorous restaurant. Our table ordered some vegetarian plates that at most restaurants would have been a simple dish. Instead, the kitchen took the opportunity to create original and startling combinations that were works of art in terms of taste and presentation. Everything at the restaurant was extremely fresh and well-prepared. The desserts were beautiful. A highly recommended place for a night out or special occasion."

"excellent food, as usual - we have been here many times, and love to return - but our experience this time was NOT good - we waited a full 5 minutes after our appetizer stuff was cleared away until our entrees were delivered - then when we wanted to get our server's attention when we were done with our entrees (I said in the confirmation call we had an 8 pm curtain at Carnegie Hall), he had disappeared - when he finally returned, we ordered sorbet for dessert - another five minutes passed before I could get our server's eye to tell him to forget the dessert - he took the dessert off the bill - I should hope! - but despite the excellent food we had, my memory of this experience is really not good - what's going on?"

"It was a bustling scene at the bar, but not too loud for conversation at the tables. The tarte flambee appetizer is a "must order". "I chose the bar room for it's menu knowing it would be somewhat noisy. This chef delivers! The food is incredible-each mouthful is so pleasurable. I only wished I could have tried more. Two of us ate, two appetizers and two 1/2 entree size portions and shared dessert. It was more than enough food. I made my reservation on opentable and requested as quiet a table as possible. The staff does its best to accommodate and our table for two was not right next to any others and conversation was definitely possible. If you love great and innovative cooking go here."

"My favorite restaurant in New York. Whenever I visit NYC the Modern is the first restaurant I want to go to. Reservations are handled with the utmost respect and concern for the customer.
