"We had our wedding reception there a year ago with 20 people. They did amazing. We decided to eat there for our one year anniversary and when they seated us and gave menus, "Happy anniversary" was written at the top for us. They personalized menus just for our occasion. It was the little touch that made it special."

"We were in Des Moines to celebrate a special occasion and chose this restaurant based on its recommendations. We were not disappointed! From the time we entered the restaurant we were welcomed. The expansive wine selection was impressive. And our waiter was outstanding. He was attentive and helpful and exactly who you would expect and want at a great steak house! He had excellent recommendations for the entrees, wine and dessert! Actually, the soufflé dessert was one of our favorite parts of the evening! We had a memorable evening!"

"Food was great as always. The service was very slow. Had empty water glasses and had to wait several mins for a bottle of wine that was ordered. A second waitress ended up coming in and helping us out. I have been here many times in the past and had great service, not sure what the issue was on this night."

"I've lived in the DSM area for 10 years and have always heard about 801, but never once tried it, until now, and I regret all the times I ate somewhere else for special occasions.
Every single aspect of the dinner experience was perfect, from making the reservation online, arriving, getting seated, all the way through dessert and leaving.
This place is expensive, but worth every penny. The steak was superb, and so was everything else. My wife mentioned to the hostess that this was our anniversary, and when our dessert came out they had actually printed "Happy Anniversary" in chocolate around the rim of the bowl. What a surprise, and to top that, they gave us the dessert for free. We will be returning."

"My friends and I were there several times during a visit to Des Moines. Very good service, very good food. On our second visit, Saturday the 23rd at 4:00 PM reservation I ordered a bone in Delmonico. I found it a little overseasoned and very salty. I was also disappointed to find out one of my friends left behind a hat which was not recovered by your bus crew. I called the following day about his hat and got a very "eh" response."

"Our original waitress was also serving a large party table and beyond the initial “hello, be right with you” was never seen again.
After a 10 minute wait, another waiter took over for our table. After another “hello, be right with you” he came back after 10 more minutes to open our wine. He need to grab some water first, and came back another 5 minutes later and opened our bottle. That is 25 minutes in we had our water and an open bottle of wine…..
Toward the end of our dining experience our waiter must have noticed that he never once filled our glasses throughout the night and graciously topped off our already full glasses…

"This was not the best night for 801 Chop House - I was disappointed. The food was not hot when it arrived at our table. No one was at the bar...and the restaurant was not busy at all, so maybe they were simply off their game a bit. We'll definitely return and try 801 again. Who can resist that beef? Anyone who has savored a USDA Prime Graded Steak knows that it is delightfully tender and juicy with a buttery flavor that makes it distinctively superior to any other steak...things to love about living in the Midwest!"

"The food at 801 is top notch. Between my wife and I we enjoyed the crab legs, the NY strip, scalloped potatoes, green beans and cheesecake. There was nothing we didn't love about our meal and would definitely recommend it to anyone. It's fairly upscale and pricy, but the quality of food and service is worth it. Highly recommended."

"Food was great as expected, however it took two trips back to the kitchen to get my wife's steak cooked as requested. Once it was cooked as she ordered it(medium)she said it was very good. We shared the mussels as an appetizer, and they were extremely fishy tasting. Not good. Lamb chops were a little overdone. I asked for them medium rare. The creamed spinach was superb as was the creme brulee. THE WAITER WAS TERRIBLE. He seemed to be hard of hearing, or it may have been boredom. My guess is he wrote medium rare on the ticket for my wife's steak, and medium for my lamb. Our friend asked for a scotch and soda with a twist, and got at least an eighth of a lemon in his drink. Overall experience, not up to par."

"Excellent service with food that is very reasonable, but in servings that are larger than needed. This latter point is made worse by the fact that the menu prices are a bit too high. It's a case that less (in terms of both price and quantity) would have provided more (in terms of overall dining satisfaction. The wine list is quite good, but do bottles really need to be 3-4 times the actual price? I seriously don't think so."
