"We came early on a Monday evening and had the place to ourselves. It gradually filled up. Our server was helpful and very prompt, almost a mind reader, showed up just when we needed him. The food was outstanding. We are both foodies and tried things from the menu that we normally wouldn't select for a meal. It was all wonderful. My wife is a fantastic cook and she doesn't like going out to eat much, especially if the restaurant doesn't cook as well as she does. She was very impressed. We have been there about four times and our response has always been the same."

"We chose this to celebrate our 10th anniversary. It was a wonderful choice. Food was tasted wonderful and looked/plated artistically. Just the right amount.

"I enjoyed the dinner immensely. Great menu, cocktail list, etc. I very much appreciated the proud focus on the use of local products, giving an out-of-towner a better understanding. My fellow diners were a diverse bunch and everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves. All the staff members were welcoming, efficient, and professional. Something really cool is going on here!"

"Heartland, Alma and 528 Groveland are the three top restaurants in the Twin Cities by general acclaim. (We agree.) Heartland is that its chef, Lenny Russo, is particularly strong on experimentation (the other two are only very slightly behind!) My Limousin beef rested on a pleasantly spicy bed of lentils, with pearl onions as another fine touch. My wife's steelhead trout had a broth that was almost pho-like, but with a touch of saffron. The wine list isn't all that long, but features a wide range of grapes and sources as well as a wide range of prices, from mid-20s to a few hundred. Service is both knowledgeable and hospitable, as well as accommodating: They composed a special sorbet assortment at our request. Great experience!"

"With my dear aunt planning a 3-hour layover during her day-trip business travels, I wanted to impress her with a delicious meal that represents the TC & the state of MN well. I wanted St. Paul, easy parking, polished service, amazing food, & a tasteful ambience. Heartland hit a home run! My aunt had the pork chop & I enjoyed an amazing pappardelle. The lamb amuse bouche was a "mouth amuser" to be sure. Sadly, with our time crunch, we were unable to enjoy a dessert. Fortunately, I live in the Cities, so I will be returning very soon to see if Chef Lenny Russo can appeal to my sweet tooth as successfully as he appealed to my savory preference.
The perfect choice for a tasty, and tasteFUL, dining experience. Not to be missed!"

"We made our reservation weeks ahead of time. That morning we received a call from Heartland asking us to confirm our reservation, which we did. We arrived on time and were seated in the bar, not the dining room. When we explained we had a reservation we were told we had to specify seating in the dining room. Ya right.

"When I made the reservation, I had some specific requests. Chef Russo personally (and promptly) answered my email even though he was working in Europe at the time. He assured me that we would be taken care of and that, if he could, he would make himself available to meet us (on my wife's bucket-list). Dinner was amazing! There are no words to describe how delicious each course was. The service was flawless as well. The evening was just perfect. Chef Russo knew that my wife was a huge fan, so he signed a menu with a personal note and made sure to come out to meet us before we left. We will go back often! Incredible."

"This was my second time to Heartland and although my first experience was just ok, it wasn't awful either and I thought I'd give it another go for my boyfriends birthday dinner.
It's a beautiful building and has a great vibe. It was packed, which is a good thing I guess, but it made it very loud and our service seemed to be lagging. We assumed it was becasue they were busy and when we did see our server, he was great.
My boyfriend enjoyed his Fauna selection, and I thought my Flora was just ok. We both giggled at the bread "bricks" we were served and even exchanged a joke with the neighboring table about how hard those rolls were! We were all struggling!
I feared for my teeth!
I don't think we'll go back, not for the price you pay."

"Heartland is my favorite restaurant. The food, service and ambiance cannot be beat! This last visit was for my birthday and we got a window seat as requested and complimentary dessert bubbly. We were the last table in the place and the waiter told us to feel free to take our time finishing our wine as they had plenty of other things to do before heading out themselves. Very nice!"

"A friend visited from out of town--both a vegetarian and a wine buff. Chickpea salad, field greens, and turnips made him smile, and so did the extensive wine list. (I'm a wine ignoramus, so I can't give any details.) I loved my potato-watercress soup and mushroom-chevre ravioli.Our waiter was friendly but knew when to leave us alone so we could talk.
One of the best things about the Heartland is the portion size. The portions are reasonable and you can walk away from the table without feeling bloated.
Alas, I find the desserts at the Heartland to be a little disappointing--somehow they don't have the depth of flavor as the savory dishes."

"Heartland was over priced. I have no problem spending a premium for a special occasion or for an exceptional dinning experience however Heartland fell far short of exceptional. The servers were lacking experience and created a nervous vibe. Some of the dishes on the Flora/Fauna prix fixe were good however my main dish, beef, was disappointing."

"Heartland is always a good choice for dining. Lenny and his staff consistently deliver delicious, creative dishes that highlight the freshest products - often from local producers. We had the ribeye and the (Lake Superior) whitefish. Both were delicious and beautifully presented. One item that caused my food rating to be less than five-star is that the portion of fish was very, very small - even by fine dining standards - no more than about four forkfuls. I expected the serving size to be larger. I noticed a table nearby with two of the same dish, where the fish portions were considerably larger than the one I was served. Consistency in serving size would be advantageous. Luckily, the ribeye was large enough to share."

"We LOVED the food at Heartland! It reminded us of the quality and presentation of great meals we had in France last fall. Each dish was a unique experience and so creatively deigned. Walleye sausage - who knew? Great pork chop and the special was roast beef, but not like grandma used to make. Sliced thin and medium rare on a bed of vegetables. Delightful! Service was excellent! If we had one comment, it would be the noise level. However, if you sit out in the bar area, it is quieter. Will try that next time. Highly recommend!"

"We were there to celebrate our five year anniversary. We didn't get our wine for approx a 1/2 hour after sitting down. We ordered a Zinfandel... It was a desert wine, which we had no idea because wasn't listed as that on the menu. It turned out it had been put in the wrong case?! Why wouldn't the wine expert pouring the first taste have a red flag when seeing the bottle, and my husband stated, "this is really different!" This whole time we never got bread as well, while the bread basket was out, our table was never asked if we wanted any. Our waitress was wonderful, I think she had too many tables. Food was great- and extremely fresh. Overall disappointed in the lack of promptness and attention to detail w making you feel welcomed."

The food was good but the prices were astronomical. A cup of coffee was $10. Yikes! We'll go somewhere else in the future."

"Heartland's menu changes every day, and they seem to come up with something special given what's fresh. I had the best venison I've ever had. I also give them a big thumbs up for having a fun wine list and for pricing it reasonably so that you feel like trying something new, like some of their selections from Italy and Slovenia.
My one complaint about this restaurant is that the service doesn't match the obvious care they put into their food. The haughty hostess tried to seat us at a dark table in the bar area instead of one of the 6-7 open tables in the main dining room, though they knew it was a special occasion and we had a reservation. The servers also don't seem that familiar with or excited about the special things on the menu."

"Heartland, as always, presented us with an interesting and delicious culinary feast. This time the staff was even able to accommodate a request from one of our companions, to have the starter from one of the Prix Fixe menus as his appetizer, even though it was not offered in the Small Plates section. What a joy! Most interesting, I think, was the sunchoke preparation, as none of my party had ever tried sunchokes before. The wait staff even offered a special treat, since we were there celebrating my husband's 50th birthday - a glass of a dessert wine for each of us. This is a highly and joyfully recommended restaurant."

"Enjoyed the atmosphere and space. Food was fine, nothing stands out, but I do regret ordering the sunchokes (soggy). I wouldn't recommend dining here if you are looking for new/interesting dishes.
Everything on the menu was overpriced, WAY overpriced. I realize this is a comment complaint of many diners no matter the restaurant, but I mean it about Heartland.
Service was friendly, but very out of balance. Server was either at our table and annoyingly attentive or running around the dining room and completely unavailable.
I wanted to like this place, but I won't be giving it another shot."

"This was about our sixth visit to Heartland. All have been excellent. This one was a disappointment. There appeared to be tables open in the quieter, main section but we were seated next to the bar in the louder, high ceilinged section. The entrees, especially my rainbow trout, were so-so, a very meager portion floating in a taste-less green sauce, a $26 dud. The side dishes of potatoes and fried onions and eggplant (I'm really not sure) were left mostly uneaten. We had a really nice waiter, but she couldn't compensate for the mediocre food and bad table placement. Two of the four entrees weren't set in front of the right guests. We want the Heartland to succeed. It will be a while, however, before we return."

"Heartland was a wonderful dining experience. We had a 5:00 reservation but upon arrival (about 5 mintues early) the staff did not seem to be prepared for guests and the daily menu was not yet posted. Next time instead of entering through the market, I will make a point to enter through the main doors. Our server was knowledgeable, friendly and patient with our questions about the menu. The food came out fresh and delicious however, several times I wasn't sure which fork/utencil to use! The pace of each course was prompt but not rushed and left ample time to linger over each dish as well as the wine."

"Steak was tough. Wait staff served medium steak and rare stake to wrong parties. Freezing cold in dining area. Dinner bread was Rick hard and served cold. Waiter was also the bartender, and not knowledgeable about food. Steak was $36 each. I've had better steaks at Outback Steak House for $7.99. Now we know why it was so easy to get a reservation on Friday night at 7 pm. This restaurant has gone downhill fast. We will not be back."

"The atmosphere is good, not super cozy because it's a little warehousy. I think it would be better if it were a little more closer together.....anyway, it's really about the food mostly. I liked the menu; a few choices and a fixed price option. We went off the menu; cheese appetizer was very good. She had the special pork which was a very good meal, I had the walleye but that was not so special. Breaded but soggy and no great flavor and didn't come with any side that was very tasty. I orded a seperate vegetable (potato) which was fine, but no great thing for $10 bucks. The dessert was a torte that wasn't really that interesting. The coffee and wine were very good. We got out for $150 which I thought was OK. Service was very good."

"Sorry, wouldnt go back again. Service was great. Wine options thin; by the glass, only 1 cab option? Seriously? Rolls and salad were great. But, had the lamb chop which was the worst cut of meat I've ever received at a resturant. There literally were only 3 small fork fulls of (fatty) meat, surrounded by more fat. I rarely (maybe never) complain about food to a waiter, but when I did, he promptly had the manager come over, who gave me a "that's the way it is" speech, without any offer to resolve. Wrong answer, and I'm done with this place."

It was quite busy when we arrived. We checked in and as usual the reception ladies had no ideas what they were doing... That's fine... While we sat down, got water and looked at the menu; our server came over and ask if we can changed the table because he got reservation for 4-people. We were thinking why they didn't plan ahead of that!!! We were a bit crabby with that arrangement already. Also, the server is quote rude. When my husband filled up his empty wine glass, the server came and said without smile "I had my eyes on your glass, you no need to pour the wine."... WOW... so crazy. He didn't sound it was a joke!!! VERY RUDE!!!!"
