Range
Nestled in the heart of the Mission District, Range is the creation of husband and wife team, Phil and Cameron West. Since the summer of 2005 Range has welcomed diners into a warm, inviting space furnished with wood floors, zinc table tops, leather banquettes and art deco elements.
As the seasons change, the food and cocktail programs follow suit. Chef Phil West’s compact menu offers locally grown and sustainably cultivated ingredients with succinct flavors layered into sophisticated fare. Pastry Chef Michelle Polzine’s thoughtfully hand-crafted desserts provide an innovative yet classic finish to the meal. Specialty cocktails reflect the produce market’s bounty and every day a new cocktail is created by our talented bartending staff. Range’s entire front room and full bar are set aside for diners without reservations to have anything from a quick drink or dessert to a fully coursed meal.

"The service was great here at Range. The menu looked amazing, and all of us wanted to get the same entree. The waitress convinced us otherwise... bad move. All of the flavors were nice but none were mindblowing. For the price though, I would return again, perhaps in the winter, to try the coffee-rubbed pork shoulder."

"Dined on a busy Saturday night with four friends and had a wonderful time. Lots of variety in the menu and everything was perfectly prepared. Roasted asparagus as an appetizer was consistently done and not caved in like when I make it at home. The duck leg was the best I have ever had, the skin perfectly crisped and the meat tender. We shared 2 desserts but I wish we'd had more! The wine list is good and reasonably priced and if you buy wine by the glass, the pour is generous. The service was impeccable. They even left all the plates until we all had finished our meals. Great evening and I can't wait to return. Not hard to get to by BART. Thank you."

"Appetizer was homemade noodles with pistachio pesto and garbanzo beans. It was outstanding.
Wouldn't normally order the chicken at a restaurant like this, but it was recommended and was definitely the right choice. Tender, juicy, flavorful meat, and the skin was seasoned to perfection. The beef was also very good. The sauce was slightly sweet and complemented the meat nicely.
We had a great waiter who was attentive but not overbearing.
Ambiance was good - nice and not stuffy."

"We are disappointed. We have really enjoyed Range in the past, but this time the service was really slow and both of our entrees (halibut and chicken) were incredibly salty. And it seemed even louder than usual! On a Tuesday night!"

"This restaurant is a must-visit for people who love fresh food served creatively and very well. Our waiter was very knowlegable, pairing our dishes with appropriate wines (and not going for the highest prices). The evening was exceptional. "I stumbled upon Range while killing time before a reservation elsewhere. It compelled me from the sidewalk, the menu looked fantastic and the other restaurant did not look as good. Luckily we were fit in. I went back again the following weekend. The olive oil poached halibut with crunchy brown rice, braised endive and asparagus with lemon verbena nage is killer! I loved the housemade egg pappardelle with pistachio pesto, fava bean and goat feta and the English pea salad with buttermilk dressing. All paired perfectly with the "3rd Rail" off the menu, but so good: Bulleit Bourbon sour. The meal was blissfully finished with a s'more like treat: Graham ice cream, salty, crunchy chocolate cake with bergamot mint marshmallow."

"4th time dining here and all aspects of the experience were excellent. Great cocktail, "Brooklyn" variant of the Manhattan. Alaskan Halibut cooked to perfection, seasonal spring pea salad with radish and a wonderful spicy buttermilk dressing. We came with friends from London and they were very impressed. "have enjoyed Range off and on over the years. "Don't be put off by the limited menu! Every appetizer, entre and speciality cocktail required some thought. Both appetizers (fava bean pasta & the marinated squid) were delicious and packed full of flavors artfully arranged allowing each one to stand out while blending perfectly at the same time. our entres were equally as thoughtful! One might find the portions a little small for sharing, but I found them to be the perfect size to enjoy an app, entre and a desert without rolling out the door. The cherry tart with creme fraiche ice cream was divine. Pleasantly unpretentious with an unfortunate volume level of 10.....perhaps just the Friday night crowd.
They have earned their Michelin star"

"We invited a work couple that I had never met and we had a great time here. The cocktails were an amazing start. We ordered a few starters, all very good and not overly fussy, which I enjoy. My halibut was excellent, my husband had rabbit, which he enjoyed. The others had salmon and also the halibut. We didn't order the chicken for which they are known. I never order chicken in a restaurant. Overall, the place is a lovely find in the Mission, the place to find little gem restaurants. Highly recommend."

"They have a seasonal menu so they may not have the same entrees etc. as when we were there. My husband got the halibut with carmelized fennel and chickpeas and blood oranges, which we LOVED. Unusual flavors to pair together but it worked very well. I had the artichoke barigoule with ricotta dumplings and spring vegetables and it was lovely and delicate and delicious (the sauce was salty, which I enjoyed but others might not.) The strawberries and buttermilk panna cotta dessert was fantastic, as were our cocktails. A lovely evening but definitely a splurge for us. Don't go here thinking you can get away with a light meal, even the small plates were pricey."

"After having this restaurant recommended to us from local friends, we were looking forward to our first meal in SF .... After reviewing the menu (interesting) and wine list (super creative and reasonable) we were excited; however, we were let down. Despite fantastic service and some really great and interesting wines, our food was over salted and over wrought. Add to this that the place became so raucous (it was Friday night) we could not hear each other sitting across a small two seat table.
I wouldn't recommend."

"We had the chance to share the our food. We all agreed that the appetizers were fantastic, and the roasted chicken was fabulous as always. But the pork shoulder and the salmon with chanterrelle mushroom were way over salted. Couldn't really finish mine, and I like salt. I think this is still a great place for a nice dinner but the food was a bit inconsistent that night."

"Limited menu and quite expensive but a hot spot and fun place to dine. Go for the cocktails, but you may leave hungry... Needs to be more selections of salads and appetizers... And maybe little bites with your cocktail like warm olives and bread?"

"The food was definitely the highlight ... which is exactly what you want in a restaurant. Several at our table had the halibut, which was sublime. I had artichokes with ricotta dumplings. The dumplings were fine, but not notable - but the artichokes were perfect. Tender, not one bit of the tough leaf left on the portion - and the broth they were served in was flavorful. I sopped it up with the bread. Will definitely return - and next time hope to be able to sit in the"

"Wow! I can't think how to begin. This restaurant is just about perfect. The food is unusual, well prepared and absolutely delicious. I love their use of fresh seasonal ingredients. The bar makes a fantastic manhattan and you can get unusual bourbons that are great on the rocks.
The service is wonderfully attentive, without being snobby. The wait staff is very knowledgable about menu items. Next time we are in San Francisco, we will be sure to eat at Range."

"Food and service were good, just not particularly exceptional, sounds quite pretentious, but I suppose there are too many restaurants doing about the same continental/California cuisine thing without a whole lot of creativity. That being said, the food is well prepared and well thought out - you should try it yourself.
The staff is very accommodating. They made us wait, but got the first round of drinks on the house, they served us the next table's food but corrected that immediately. This is a well run restaurant with good quality food.
What was probably most lacking was in the ambiance of the place, it had absolutely nothing going for it - decor, lighting, noise, seating arrangements"

"Range was ok, but disappointing. To begin with the waiter described how rose was made authoritatively and inaccurately. We got the cod and pork shoulder. Cod was pretty fishy, pork shoulder very fatty and salty. For the price and reputation I'd expect a lot more. It's fine overall, but Don't think I'll be back."

"The food was delicious. Service was generally attentive and helpful. A minor complaint is that the 2nd course arrived as soon as the first course was taken away. The plates had clearly been waiting some time before they were served and had been timed to quickly. The other complaint is that the noise level makes it difficult to have a conversation without raising voices a lot."
