"I had heard much about the excellence of Restaurant Eugene and had been wanting to go for some time - having a friend visit from out of town spurred us to go - I really wanted to like it but it turned out only OK - for us this was definitely a case of the whole does not equal the sum of the parts - excellent nuances in taste, competent wait staff in terms of explaining the menu, providing suggestions, handling the wine - very good presentation on the plate - BUT...small portions and an annoying delivery of the dishes for the main course (putting the plate down, explaining everything on the plate while pointing to each item made me think "ehough already") - too bad - have had better at Bones, Pricci, Capital Grill, Joel, Seegers, Baccanalia,"

"Had always planned on goig to Eugene's but never made it. Went for wife's birthday with son and daughter-in-law. Had the 7 course tasting dinner paired with wine. We were blown away - everything was excellent - food, service, wine, etc. Have been to just about everywhere in Atlanta. Eugene's was right up there with Baccanahlia, Quiones, and a few others. Also liked that the chef Linton Hopkins came out, stopped at every table and took the time to talk to everyone. I haven't seen that in a while.

Can't say enough about waht a great time that we had - just had a great evening."

"We had the 7 course degustation menu. I'd put it on par with some of the best restaurants in Chicago...Trotters, Everest, Alinea, etc. At first, I thought the service was paced slow...but that's the only way you can get through 7 courses. We arrived at 7pm and left at 11pm. The wine flights were a bit...lets say...different. Not the usual high end stuff, but selections like say a good white cab from Italy. My dinner guest, not at all the carnivore was thrilled by the lamb and the beef. I might add the Wagyu beef is the best I've ever put a fork to. The decor was sleek and appropriate for this altar to gastronomy. Atlanta should be proud."

"Our experience at Restaurant Eugene was positive, even though the food itself was somewhat underwhelming. Our server was excellent, and the surroundings quiet, simple and elegant..... The appetizers were better than the entrees -- especially yummy were the salmon tartare and beats with goat cheese custard.....The entrees were not amazing even though they sounded great....the lamb was fatty (rather than marbled) and pork medley was ok...but the flavors did not captivate....."

"We had a good experieince, the food and atomosphere was great. The time between courses however was painly slow. Our waiter was very knowledgeable and very friendly but after our first course it was an hour before the main course arrived. Maybe that's standard??? I would go back, I may just make sure our server keeps us posted on the status of our courses every 20 minutes or so."

"My good friend, who is a bona-fide foodie, highly recommended Eugene's for our friend's going away dinner party. I was strongly interested in a restaurant that not only had fantastic food, but also beautiful decor and a great ambience. Well, suffice it to say, I was tremendously pleased by his pick. This place has to be one of Atlanta's finest dining establishments. Our friends ordered various dishes, some which included the duck, lamb, snapper and the fresh winter vegetable tasting. I must say, we enjoyed every morsel of it. Thank you for providing outstanding service (our waiter was fantastic, he was instrumental at our dinner), and a truly wonderful place to wine and dine.

"In one word, our dining experience was amazing. We opted for the five course sampler with the wine pairings. It was divine. Each course was expertly prepared and brought out the flavors of each ingredient wonderfully. Our waiter was awesome and it truly is an experience that should be had at least once in a lifetime (yes, it's expensive, but worth every penny)."

"Upscale restaurant without feeling overly formal. The food is definitely fit for foodies. Lots of interesting choices and takes on fish, meats and veggies. Some of the dishes were hit or miss depending on the selection. The hits were big hits (Salmon Tartar, Mushroom Tasting, Grouper), some dishes were delightful but not spectacular (porcini lamp, Pork tasting), and some were disappointing (Veal Confit, Potato Tart). All the deserts were just ok but nothing special. Service was excellent and highly knowledgeable. Oodd wine list that is approachable at various price points. I would go again for the salmon tartar especially if someone else is buying."

"Great experience. Love to go there a couple of times a year. The menu was intriguing and the 4 courses I had were all great. I particularly enjoyed the flounder and the goat cheese cheesecake. "Maybe Chef Linton Hopkins was off this particular night. But, with all the notoriety surrounding this restaurant, we were not wowed, (and we wanted to be WOWED). We each had the tasting menu with one of us being vegetarian, and the food was not worth the price tag. The wine list was good and the service was also good. Only the food seemed sub-standard."

"We had a wonderful Sunday "supper" at Restaurant Eugene. In each course, attention to detail was evident and the pursuit of local, fresh ingredients obvious. Beginning with a cosmo that our waiter insisted contained FRESH cranberry juice (?!) through a salad of baby lettuces with spiced peanuts and a pork sampler entree served with al dente rutabaga strips, and even to the coffee, each course left me awed. The only (slight) flaw, if one could be noted, was that although the crust on the browned butter pear tart was heavenly, the pear itself was a bit hard. Not ripe, perhaps? or maybe just underbaked? At any rate, the meal as a whole was superb, and we enjoyed the waiter (and bartender trainee)and his extensive knowledge about the food."

"This was our 3rd time dining @ Eugene & 2nd after new menu format. Our party of 3 went with a lot of different tastings. Most things were excellent (especially the shrimp with nettle pesto, pork tasting, spoonbread, mushrooms, daikon radishes, & the breads), but a few were a little disappointing (the octopus, cherry belle radishes, & fingerling potatoes)--a risk for a chef constantly innovating new dishes. Presentation was elegant--especially for the lovely amuse bouches that arrived before the meal. The wine list is diverse & our waiter made a nice suggestion that we enjoyed very much. The desserts were interesting & of the 3 we tried, the pear tarte stood out. Smoked salt with the chocolate was interesting but there was too much salt."

"The overall experience was a little disappointing. While we had to take an early reservation because the time we wanted was not available, there were only three tables of customers in the hour and a half we were there. The portions were VERY, very small and the prices were VERY, very high. We got a side item, a sweet potato tart, that was the size of a coaster and it was $11!! The staff was non-intrusive but sometimes had trouble keeping the water glass full. It was okay but I will not go back."

"It was wonderful to enjoy a fabulous dinner in a quiet, candle lit surrounding without the typical "white noise" so common to restaurants today. The food was interesting and beautifully presented. "Well.....was recommended by friends that are very classy and have good taste so was excited to celebrate our Valentines there. It was a few days before Valentines but fit our busy schedules. First of all was sat at a table in front of a very drafty door, and I moved to the other side of the table beside I was wearing a dress and my legs were freezing. Waiter took no note of this. Still cold I asked for my coat to put over my legs and still no offer to move us. There were two other tables at the time 6:15. Had to ask for a black napkin....maybe my black outfit wasn't noticed along with my frostbite. Being our first time and a unusual format to the menu, naturally we had questions. Well, that seemed to really be a drag for our asleep waiter"

"The Steelhead tartare was was the best part of the meal for me. The flavors blended really well but you could also taste all of the individual ingredients; it was an explosive dish! The entree portion (I had the steak) was a little small for the price, but very tasty. My girlfriend ordered the duck confit and it was well-portioned and really flavorful. The waiter we had (Scott, I think) was amazing! he recommended the perfect wine parings with each dish and gave us the pinnacle of service, please send our thanks... Will return in the future!"

"This was our fourth visit to Restaurant Eugene. We had never done the prix fix menu there and it was excellent. Our waiter was not very warm and friendly, which was a big change from our previous experience, but the food was still outstanding.
The foie gras was the best my wife has ever had (compared to some in Napa & Paris). All in all, a great experience AGAIN."

"Nice restaurant but mixed feelings to experience. Décor was pleasant/upscale and service fantastic but mixed view on food. Focus on fresh, seasonal and local ingredients a positive and understanding is refined techniques used. However, impression that food was a bit bland and lacked anything to make the meal memorable (best thing I ate was addictive pimiento cheese spread); had vegetable soup, salmon tartare and vegetable medley and all lacked seasoning (soup was best). However, overall good experience so gave 4 stars and maybe I just had some items less seasoned then others. Want to highlight service was absolutely first rate; every person was helpful, friendly and knowledgeable and bartender recommended great cocktail and wine pairing."

"I had read a lot about this restaurant and had high expectations. They were all met.
I became worried when our table was not ready when we came in but we sat at the bar, ordered a outstanding cocktail and by the time we had finished it our table was ready.
I had a simple green salad with citrus and spiced peanuts, my date had the sweetbreads.
For entrees we shared the veg plate, a must have because of its variety and we shared the ribeye, decadent and perfectly cooked.
I opted for the cheese plate, two of the cheeses I had never had before. We also ordered the apple tart, perfect.
Service was knowledgeable and professional. Our pinot noir was great."

"Exquisite! We arrived at 6:30 and the restaurant was relatively quiet. Around 8:30 or so, the noise level was noticably louder, which is not a plus. The food, however, was outstanding! The staff was very knowledgeable, friendly ( but not too friendly, if you know what I mean). Definite foody spot. The menu layout is a little difficult to understand. It was divided into three sections: Fish, Vegetable and Meats. The items at the top of the list under each section were appetizer portions and toward the bottom of the list were entree portions. We opted for the tasting menu and let the chef select the wines for each course, which was a great decision. Wonderful wine pairings with meal. We'll be back."

"We miss the pris fixe Sunday Supper. The restaurant says that you can order three courses from their Sunday menu and stay "close" to the previous $29.50 fixed price for three courses, but it would definitely cost more than their longstanding Sunday Supper which was a great value. The food was excellent, but given the higher price and the somewhat small servings we will reserve Restaurant Eugene for a special occasion."

"Excellent food, but poor management. My wife and I have gone here a few times, and everytime we go, something bad happens. Three times ago we were brought out stale wine, the time after we had to wait 30 minutes past our reservation time to be seated (they didn't care to ask if we had somewhere to go, which we did, and were then late). This brings us to last time when we had to sit at the restaurant for close to 2 hrs, 30 minutes of which was to get our check. This was not a tasting menu, and we didn't even have dessert. All we got was a prefunctory "We apologize" from the manager who didn't even ask us if we liked our meal (but did a great job of chatting with tables who bought pricey wine, etc). This place is snooty, never will go again."

"I have to say I was very disappointed by the service at Restaurant Eugene. My husband and I went with another couple on a Friday. No joke, by the time we sat down and received our appetizers was 1 hour 45 minutes. It took us having to track down the waiter to get our drink order after sitting there for almost 30 minutes. I wasn't in a rush, but come on, the attentiveness was very poor. It wasn't crazy busy, 3 waiters and a busboy for the amount of tables, I think they can be on the ball alittle better. Our table was getting tired of hearing "sorry". The food was great, but boy the service was horrible. For the amount of money you spend there, they should get better waiter service. I probably won't go back anytime soon...."

"We chose Restaurant Eugene to celebrate a special occasion. The food was inventive and very flavorful from appetizer to dessert. The wine list was so so, ordered a bottle of wine that was very average but over priced. I expected the service to be very attentive, however we sat for 10-15 minutes with no menu, water or any attention at all. Once our waitress finally did arrive we found her to be quite charming. Maybe just part of the whole slow food ambiance. Overall, would recommend to a friend especially for a special occasion or romantic dinner."

"The food was wonderful, especially the sweet potato soup; some of the side dishes were a bit disappointing: slaw that was pretty ordinary and a vegetable plate that was so crowded that you could not really identify what was included. The fried chicken was good, but not as good as that served at Watershed! I was disappointed that the Sunday Supper advertised on the Web site was no longer available but was not told this until we were trying to decide what to order."

"Our waiter, Chris, was TOP NOTCH! If there were a reality show for waiters, he'd win it! The ambiance was very lovely. The food was superb. Not totally sure the steak was worth $42, but it was indeed spiced perfectly. But honestly, I don't personally see a need pay more than $30 for it. The wine was outstanding. The overall service was really wonderful and the valet parking was helpful. The bartender was wonderful in serving us our requested tea on a very cold night. The only negative comment would be that the chocolate ganache dessert was disappointing. Small and flavorless. I would think RE could do much better than that. But, we really enjoyed our overall experience very much and would like to go back for our next special occasion."

"This was the first time we dined at Restaurant Eugene, where we enjoyed the five course tasting menu. The waiter queried our food preferences, so each of us had some input, although basically (unlike Bacchanalia) the chef chose each course for us. Some food items were out-of-this-world (the scallop!) and some didn't excite (radish with butter--not a butter sauce--hard butter). We had read some unfavorable reviews regarding service, but had absolutely no complaints. Waitstaff was very attentive and, overall, the meal flowed extremely well. Portions were sufficient, but we certainly weren't stuffed. It was quality, not quantity. Expect no doggie bag. Was it worth the expense? Yes, if you can afford it. No, if you can't."

"Our experience at Restaurant Eugene was absolutely superb! Everything, from the bread basket to the entrees was elegant and delicious. I had the duck, and it was the best duck I have ever had anywhere - including Bacchanalia where I had duck 2 nights later. It was so flavorful and tender, I would have believed it was pork tenderloin if I didn't know better. We had the cheese for dessert and asked the server to select 5 for us, including wine pairing. It was absolutely the best cheese sampling we have ever had - again compared to Bacchanalia, NY's Gramercy Tavern, and several highly esteemed European restaurants. Simply Amazing!"

Helpful, well-trained servers are always there at the right time and you hardly notice them. They provide candid assessments of dinner choices based on your preferences. "The bartender, Nick, is known for his drink-making skills - he is very good! We had an 8:15 reservation and waited over an hour for a table. "the menu was not very helpful in selecting our courses. the only way to determine which selections could serve as entrees and which were more appropriate as sides or appetizers was the price of each dish, as they were scattered randomly throughout the menu. extremely over-salted on multiple courses. i had the monkfish, which was lukewarm at best; almost cold. the complimentary initial course (amuse bouche, i think) was "pretty" in a minimalist kind of way, but smaller than the size of a piece of trident gum. And the server who presented the course mumbled his way through the description, so we had no idea what it was. the one course that did shine was the dessert course; our party tried four different selections, and all were excellent"

"We were not pleased with the menu. We were expected "twist on southern traditional" and being from Birmingham, AL I was expecting food combinations and creativity like Frank Stitt's. Instead, it was chicken liver, sweatbreads, squab, duck and other choices that I don't seem to remember being in my Southern background. All in all, a mediocre experience with limited food choices. The table of four next to us were making the same comments."

Told to cash out because table is about ready…… waiter places drinks on tray to deliver to table…..table not ready for 10 more minutes……awkward for all concerned……

"We were disappointed with our dining experience at Restaurant Eugene. I had made a reservation ahead of time to celebrate 2 birthdays and then confirmed this reservation 2 days in advance and we were still made to wait almost 20 min. when we arrived. I have never had this happen at a high-end Atlanta restaurant. Also, the hostess was kind of flippant and unconcerned about our wait. The waiter who served us dinner was a little lackluster as well. I do not think we'll be dining at this restaurant again."

"My second trip to Restaurant Eugene was just as enjoyable as my first. I am a big fan of their Sunday Dinner concept. On this trip my guest and I supplemented our 3 course Sunday dinners with an entree size autumn vegetable plate, well aware that one of the restaurant's greatest strengths is in the preparation of fresh vegetables. While our waiter was not able to tell us ahead of time exactly which vegetables would show up on this plate, we were amply rewarded with a diverse and delicious medley of around 8 items to enjoy with our crispy Mary Randolph fried chicken. The toasted corn soup with chopped pickled beets in the center that was a first course selection on the Sunday Dinner menu was one of the best soups I've tasted in a long time."

"Disappointed with our first visit after hearing such rave reviews. Waiter spoke so quickly could baredly understand him so we found menu rather confusing. Ordered a salad to split-portion was extremely small for price. One person in our party ordered lamb and contained much fat so was not pleased. Limited menu and high prices. I would not return--too many other good restaurants."

"Everything was great. We went for our 25th anniversary and the restaurant was thoughtful enough to print a special edition of their menu noting our anniversary. One member of our group asked the bartender to fix "something special" that was non alchoholic (and also wasn't sweeet). I'm going back to get the recipe because it was great!"

"We dined at Restaurant Eugene to celebrate our anniversary. They had recently been honored as "restaurant of the year" by the AJC, and we had high expectations. We were not disappointed. It was pure food nirvana. From the moment we sat down to the time we left, the experience was sublime. The seven course tasting menu was a continuous, and delightful surprise (the lobster grits were heavenly). The service by Chris, was professional and attentive, without being obsequious. It was a dinner to remember."

"The restaurant is very cozy. We had the "chef's table" for a business dinner but it was not located where we could observe the chef which seems odd. The menu is poorly laid out - the appetizers aren't marked and are listed with the entrees - the waiter had to advise each diner individually at the table how to tell the appetizers from the entrees. The food was ok, not remarkable. Each phase of ordering was incredibly long - we ate alot of bread before the first appetizer arrived! What should have been a 2 hour buiness dinner turned into three hours. The waiter wasn't warm or friendly, and seemed condesending at times."

"We have been to Restaurant Eugene 3 times previously. All those experiences were great. Our visit on 11/25/09 was not that great. I had my mother, brother and sister-in-law in town and wanted to impress them with a wonderful meal. While the service was pretty good, all 5 of our entrees came out lukewarm. They offered to re-heat them, but that just ruins the entire flow of the meal--plus the food can end up overcooked. They did give us several desserts to try and make amends. We also found the small plates menu a bit confusing. And when they say small plates they mean it!! We all thought the prices were too much for what you received--even though the ingredients and flavors were very good. For us, it wasn't a $500+ dining experience!"

"This was one of the best dining experiences we've had in a long time - and we dine out frequently. The service was impeccable, the food beyond our expectations. The chef came out and spoke to many diners which was an added "touch" and made you feel like he was truly invested in your dining experience.
