Designed by partner Jean Denoyer, Orsay strikes that difficult balance of sophisticated-chic in a warm convivial atmosphere. Dark mahogany raised paneled walls meet Art Nouveau styled arches in a deep, creamy butter color. The floor is a work of art, Italian mosaic tiles in warm tones of precious metals hand laid in a beautiful fan pattern that floats in waves across the expanse of floor. Banquettes with high wood backs topped with frosted glass panels provide privacy if wanted, and the low, soft lighting emanates from Art Nouveau period chandeliers that Denoyer had custom designed. A 20-foot long zinc-topped wood bar shipped in one piece from France, and French doors that spill onto the sidewalk terrace, completing the feeling that you are in the 9th arrondisement in Paris. This sophisticated and elegant Parisian-style brasserie marries modern French cuisine and classic brasserie fare. Orsay's award-winning wine list includes all 300 predominantly French and American varietals.
"Superb and beautiful ambiance- one of NYC best looking 'bistro type' in appearance. WEllserved and etremely pleasant front desk for reservations and overall spervision."

"Orsay is a neighborhood hot spot. The crowd is chic upper east side and yet very comfortable. The food is excellent and the service might even be better. We have been going there more and more lately because they have been so nice to us and the food is consistent every time. Closest to being in Paris of almost all restaurants in NYC.
I highly recommend it. You will have a wonderful experience all around"

"The food was excellent. The waiter appeared once to ask us for our drink and food requests. Never saw him again. Missed 1/3 of the drink order. Could not get his attention. To say he was indifferent would be a euphemism."

"We went on Mothers Day and were surprised that the restaurant wasn't too crowded - our service was attentive without being overbearing. We spent the first 20 minutes talking over wine with friends before we even looked at the menu. Never did our waitress make us feel rushed. The portions of food were perfect without feeling skimpy. We would go back."

"We took the kids for a "fancy" dinner, and they had a great kids menu with more than the typical kid fare. Also sides are usually forgetable but the green beans were outstanding."

"Orsay is an Upper East Side institution. I believe they used to call it Divorsay because it had such a vibrant pick up scene. But when we went it looked like a normal, not that special French restaurant. Maybe it was the mood I was in but it just didn't rock my world. If you want a good French meal that's pretty traditional invert traditionally French surroundings, then great. I would rather go somewhere else."

"Food was overall excellent, including the desserts, and service was great despite it being crowded. However, noise was TERRIBLE. It was the kind of place where you have to yell to talk to anyone across from you. Went with a party of 6 people. I could only hear the person sitting right next to me."

"Ended up here by accident (after giving up on Arlington Club, which kept us waiting in a horrible scrum of people for 30+ minutes past our reservation time), but was so glad we did. Our party of 5 received a warm welcome, and we were shown immediately to our table. The atmosphere is very authentic--it feels like you've stepped into France. Everything we tried was great--in particular the crab claws and the pistachio sausage appetizers, and the steak frites and cassoulet for the main course. Tasty desserts too, and good wines available by the glass or carafe. Will definitely return."

"We were seated promptly on time, and what is more, although we had an unexpected guest joining us, they happily accommodated our change from 2 to 3, which was very gracious and unexpected. Now the difficulties: almost none of the wait staff, other than the waiters themselves, speak English, which makes asking for ANYTHING very difficult. One of our party spoke Spanish and we were forced to use that for many requests. That shouldn't be in a French restaurant that prides itself on being authentic. I ordered poached eggs with a pork sausage, the eggs were cold and the sausage tasted very strange. I sent it back however and ordered Eggs Benedict which was wonderful. The other guests enjoyed their meals.Since it was Easter they did very well"

"This restaurant effortlessly recreates a Parisian brasserie in New York City. The space feels authentic, staff spoke French, but the menu was in English, something you have to beg for in Paris. I enjoyed foie gras, duck a l'orange and a tarte tatin with a delicious crisp Sancerre. Yes it was pricey, but worth every cent. A marvelous place for a romantic dinner, or a family outing (if you are a wealthy family)."

"My friend's Birthday lunch was a hit. The staff at Orsay were amazingly attentive from check-in, to our exit, which seemed rather grand with two maitre d's opening the double doors for us. Tasty mushroom soup, and her tuna tartare was abundant, lovely and quite delectable. The complimentary and celebratory plate of cookies...macarons, elephant ears, almond paste & coconut...such a sweet ending to a very nice Birthday, ladies' lunch out."

"We eat here often. It is consistently fine food, unpretentious cooking without the cuisine affectations that so many places fail to deliver. Great East Coast oysters, hanger steak (the cut the French eat) and a well constructed wine list. Just as good as you would hope for in a Bourgeois local brasserie in France."

"We had to rate this experience rather low for 3 reasons. First - they seated us and then seated another couple right next to us on a small two-top when all the tables in that run of maybe 10 tables was empty (as was the restaurant). We could not avoid hearing their conversation constantly. Second-the noise level was unbearable. When it became full-it was impossible to hear each other without speaking very close or very loud. Third-the duck, which was their sat. night special was dry and the skin was not crispy. My son's steak was very good, though, he said and the strawberry dessert was very nice. The restaurant also played no music...it would have been charming to have some some bistro Parisian type music playing in the background."

"Really great restaurant an their food although was not the best I ever had it was pretty authentic French. I had the Saturday special of duck a l'orange and it was good followed by strawberry vacherin which was so yummy. We sat on the enclosed terrace which was a nice spot and a bit quieter than the main dining room, but still energetic in feeling. Great place for some French food and outstanding staff to make everything enjoyable for you."

"In New York where there is a large selection of Parisian bistros, surely Orsay is the most authentic. Try the cheese souffle for lunch, it is as close as you will get to France without hopping on a plane!"

"Both of us were delighted with what we ordered. I had the salmon tournedos with bernaise sauce on the side, grilled asparagus and a mesculin salad. My friend had the cod dish and also found it very flavorful. The wait staff was also very attentive. In the past we've had their scallops and also their steak. Very good as well."

"The food was great and the portions appropriate. We had a good evening. Two negative observations:
The osso bucco listed on the menu with polenta and "carrots" came with 4 little popcorn-sized carrot bits placed more for adornment than digestion. Together, they would fill a tablespoon. It was really quite silly.
The server, though attentive and a veteran, appeared distracted and bored; he didn't look people in the eye.
These are minor criticisms to an otherwise pleasant experience, but worthy of correction nevertheless."

"Again we had a wonderful experience at Orsay. The staff was incredible, very knowledgeable and willing to go above and beyond to accommodate us. The food was impeccable and we've been dreaming of the bearnaise sauce ever since, it's by far the best we've ever had. Please try if you're in the mood for classic french food at it's best."

"I went on Super Bowl Sunday so it was quite dead. It was nice the Fillet mignon was very good so was the hanger steak. For a French place I was extremely disappointed in the desert. I have been there before for brunch and if you ever decide to go there go for brunch. It is one of my favorite brunch places in the city. Don't bother going for dinner because brunch there is so much better."

"The service was horrible. We were seated and waited over a half hour and no one took our order. We kindly reminded the waiter who walked by us that we were ready to order and waited another 10 minutes, then we went to the hostess up front and asked if she could get someone to take our order. In a few minutes a manager came and took our order. The food was very good when it came, but we were in the restaurant over 2 hours for lunch."

"Pretty place. Menu was fine -- on the traditional side, for those that are looking for that (as we were) But the food was not at all special -- not bad, but not worth a return visit. And the service was inattentive and rushed. We had a group of 9. On the one hand, that can be a tough service task. On the other hand, we were all polite and in a festive mood, so a bit of attention would have gone a long way and earned a big tip. No such luck. I couldn't even get a coffee ordered. Finally, it was cold. The restaurant left its French doors to its outside (enclosed) patio open, and on a frigid day that means we felt the draft akl the w. Overall, it felt like place that needs an infusion of talent, or at a minimum, of caring."

"I booked this location based on its availablity for restaurant week, specifically dining on a Saturday night. When I got there, the menue indicated that the pre-fix menue was available every day but Saturday... not sure who to blame for this Open Table or Orsay. Dinner was ok, I had the duck, my guests had the fish and the chicken, all were full of flavor but you lost the taste of the actual item in the sauce. The wait staff was ok, not attentive but very professional. The place has a very noisy section, we sat near the window/outside dining area and we still heard the noise from the other side of the restaurant. We paid full price for the meal and it was not a treat."
