The Liberty
The Liberty is Charlotte’s first Gastro pub. Our goal is to provide great food and drink at a reasonable cost. The first Gastropubs started in London as many top chefs turned away from the high costs of fine dining, wanting to do their food in a more casual setting.
We also share this vision. Our menu offers elevated comfort foods and pub fare using the best ingredients available. We serve 19 hand crafted beers on tap (plus PBR!), and another 60 by the bottle. Our wine list is carefully chosen to give you 30 affordable wines by the glass. Naturally, we also have a full selection of spirits as well.
We don't have a dress code, or for that matter, an ounce of pretension. We are casual enough for jeans and a tee shirt, but nice enough for a first date.
We are a neighborhood establishment, sitting at the gateway to South End and Dilworth, with a light rail stop in our parking lot.
We are unlike anything else in Charlotte.

"We enjoyed the Father's day pre-fixe menu. Most importantly Dad really enjoyed it. Our waitress was really great at the begining. With it being a holiday she got into the weeds a little towards the end. All together, great food and a good time."

"I've been looking for an excuse to visit the Liberty as it has been some time since my last trip. Their Father's Day Brunch special proved irresistible and my wife and I found ourselves there in the early afternoon. As always, their well thought out beer list beckoned and I chose a brew I'd not had before, a Sierra Nevada Black IPA. Delicious. We split the iceberg salad and heirloom gazpacho with lobster (cannot begin to describe just how good this dish was) and then their unique take on Shrimp and Grits (including Andouille Sausage) and tasty bacon wrapped pork tenderloin on a bed of lentils, spinach, and asparagus. We finished with a warm berry cobbler and ice cream and took the chocolate-caramel budino home. Can't wait to go back"

"We so enjoyed this wonderful neighborhood restaurant. Our son lives near by and we were delighted to walk to and from dinner. The beef short ribs with risotto were outstanding and my husband loved the burger. Our friend said the trout was excellent and we all were happy with the the moderate prices. We're from out of town but will definitely be back when we are in Charlotte next!"

"Had afternoon show to go to uptown on Sunday. This was convenient and very great food. We ate outside and it was great also. I,had the omelet of the day which tasted very fresh. The other people with my party all tried different items and where greatly pleased with their lunch. We usher on Sunday a lot and there isn't many good places to eat. We will definitely tell others."

"Took FOREVER to get our drinks, had to stare at an empty glass while I ate, host watched as I struggled to push stroller through the door (seriously, other places would break their necks to open the door for a customer in that situation). Burgers were good, tea was terrible. Just slow, really really really slow and without any reason to be slow. I won't be going back....I expect more."

"We had an excellent dinner at The Liberty. I had the Southern Crunch Burger and I was pretty much the best burger I've ever had. FABULOUS! Get it! My husband had the chicken and dumplings. When it came it looked, well...almost healthy! It was very different than what we expected but it was absolutely delicious. Two chicken breasts over delicious mushrooms, and other veggies. It looked like health food but the taste was absolutely delicious! Would order it again. Huge beer selection and great service. Some of our fellow diners were loud, bordering on obnoxiously loud, so that was the only minus. Great atmosphere and cozy lighting. I'll be back!"

"We decided to venture downtown via the light-rail and made a stop at the East/West station to try Liberty. It was ultra-convenient to this stop and there was no wait as it was still early evening (5:30ish). The burger we tried was pricey but very tasty. Not a huge fan of the buttermilk-blue cheese dipping sauce for the chips but other than that, we enjoyed it. Would go back."

"Great evening dining at Liberty. Had several people tell me they had enjoyed it. They remarked on the food, service and ambience. I have to concur. Our waitress was delightful, the food timely and delicious, and the ambience was great. Now I have to put a caveat in....we went on a weekday night. The restaurant was not full. I suspect that on the weekends, bcause of the large rooms, it might get a little loud. Still, that is merely the price you pay for a good, causual, homey close-in, easy to access restaurant. Enjoy"

"Made Mother's Day reservations. Did not realize it was a special 3-course brunch menu only for $25 each person. Was not happy with the food choices. Their online menu looked so much better but we did not have that option. Very loud on Mother's Day, especially with concrete floors and lots of kids. One server worked our entire side of restaurant, so service was a little slow. Really wanted to try the food from the online menu, but not sure if I want to go back."

"We had the Mother's Day pre-fixe which had a very good selection. The bisque was a little disappointing but the chicken & dumplings were very good (as usual). It needed a few more gnocchi though. Our waitress was really off her game. We had to ask her for refills repeatedly and she disappeared for long periods. We were there at 11am when the doors opened before the rush, so not really sure where she was."

"Because it was Mothers Day, the wait staff were a little harried and too busy. The food was excellent, the menu creative, although not too many vegetarian options. They were willing to make some things without the meat, which we appreciated on such a busy day. The desserts were absolutely superb. It was a bit too noisy for my liking. I look forward to going there another day when I can try the regular menu and see what it's like on a non-special day."

"This is my 2nd straight year taking my wife and family out for Mother's Day Brunch at the Liberty. The food and service is top notch! Everyone always has a hard time deciding what to choose. We missed not having the desert buffet this year vs. last year where instead of choosing just one desert you could sample more than one of the fabulous deserts. I recommend you bring this back for Mother's Day 2014."

"We had a 730 reservation this past Saturday night for a party of 6. We arrived on time and were informed by the hostess that the group ahead of us was just finishing up and it would be a few minutes. No problem, we head to the bar where there was plenty of space. 15 minutes pass and nothing, 30 minutes pass and I'm pretty frustrated. I spoke to the hostess again only to be told the same thing. Finally at 815 I find the manager and tell him my frustrations. With not even an apology he does a cursory check of the available tables and tells me they are cleaning our table now. At 817 we were finally seated. The food at the Liberty is good, but the service is TERRIBLE! We won't be back. They didn't even comp a drink, or an appetizer."

"We have been to this retaurant several times and always the food has been very good, tasteful and well presented. The kids always like the poutine and pretzel appertisers while the burgers, steak, pork and fish and chips were very all very good entrees. We have however, noticed the service has been typically hit or miss on several occasions - small things like our cocktails/drinks taking too long to arrive, or not arriving and we having to ask again for them, waiting too long to order further drinks or even not even being asked if we wanted further drinks."

"We tried the Liberty for the first time, to test the winning burger in Charlotte's Best Burger contest... and it was definitely in the "best" category. Although I'm not sure I would say it was "the best." I put the burgers in Charlotte into 2 categories: gourmet, and quick food. Category 1: I still like 5 Guys (best fries also?)... Category 2: I like, Big Daddy's, Liberty and the Kickstand burger. In no particular order.
...Back to the Liberty. The Liberty is one of those places where you want to come back, simply, to try everything on the menu. Very creative, and everything I've tried was very good. So I hope to return again and fulfill my destiny... But it is expensive, so that may take some time!"

"We tried the Poutine, for an appetizer. It is calorie loaded and was a little much, but I could see how it would be great on a winter's night in Canada. The table next to us also ordered it and gobbled it down like wolves. I do not usually like gravy, but I loved it in this. It was more of a brown gravy not like a thick biscuit gravy.

"Great beer/wine competition dinners.
This time it was Easter brunch -- quite a crowd but wait staff kept their cool and made one feel welcome. Price point and variety of tasty selections was fine.
Draft beer list is highlighting more and more of the local NC craft brews -- really appreciate that."

"Mostly because we live in Rock Hill, SC, my husband and I have only been to this restaurant on two occasions - Thanksgiving and Easter. We have recommended it to many of our friends because the food was very out of the ordinary and delicious. Kudos go to the chef! The hostess and servers are efficient and at the same time friendly."

"The Easter menu was superb both in quality and price. Bit of a wait despite having reservations,however this is expected on a holiday. We like this restaurant all the time and wish it was closer to home! chef Tom and staff really outdo themselves to make dining here a pleasant experience. Beer varieties are outstanding and mimosas reasonable. Prime rib was cooked perfectly and both the crab cake and gnocchis with lamb were very good. The dessert Bart was excellent!

"We adore the Liberty..but the Easter experience was not as good as a normal day. First we waited quite a while for our table..we had 1 PM reservations but did not get seated till after 2 PM.We understand as it is Easter and everyone goes out to eat. We did not get drinks for quite a while..no server..and then when we did put our order in we got the first course before we got our bar drinks. We had to ask three times for the Biscuits which were part of the Easter menu. The first course was great - a fresh pea soup with mint and lobster. We all had it..wonderful. The second course - when we recieved the biscuits, was Lamb Shoulder in a Ragu sauce over Gnocchis and a Prime Rib and a Salmon. The Salmon was not cooked at all..."

"Went for Easter brunch, having received the menu by email earlier in the week. Must make reservations, heard the hostess tell several people they were booked solid. Food was to die for as usual, mimosas were tasty. Server was very speedy and friendly. Did have to wait for half.hour after our reservation time."

"I agree with some previous reviews in that they do seem to be understaffed and a bit disorganized. I think we were the second pair of diners to arrive for Easter brunch (11 a.m. reservation, which is when they opened for the day) and when our food came out I noticed that the server (not our waitress) tried to deliver at two other tables before finally getting to us, so apparently their system doesn't properly identify which food order is to be delivered to which table. The food was okay, but not great. We both had the three course (appetizer, main and dessert bar) Easter brunch special. Very reasonably priced, but our overall impression was that at least some of the food was pre-cooked or at least partially cooked earlier."

"The Liberty was slammed and turning customers away at Easter Brunch, but we were seated for our 12:30 reservation very quickly. It was a 3 course meal and there were several selections I would have chosen. The crab soup shooter and crabcake were very good and my shrimp and grits were excellent ! The dessert bar was killer. My daughter loved the pea soup with lobster and she thought the pecan crusted chicken & waffles were delicious. A very enjoyable Easter brunch !"

"It was extremely dissapointing. I know it was Easter Sunday and it was very busy but to be seated at 1.30 pm and we had a 12.45 reservation was unacceptable. The young lady who was the host was very friendly and continued to smile with all of the pressure she was under. She was answering phones, seating people, cleaning off tables, all by herself! Easter Sunday and they were so under staffed?!? It was very unfortunate. I might be back for lunch during the week - but never again with my family."

"I'm sure this is not the only poor review for the easter brunch this past Sunday. Reservations for 12:30 turned into seating after 1:00.
That was after inquiry moments before of how much longer? Although not in this business it was evident they needed more than twice the staff that was present. The hostess was clearing tables and was rarely at her station. Management was likely in the kitchen or hiding since the entry was packed with families, relatives and young children in their Sunday best all very frustrated. I saw one patron down a manager's throat for over five minutes. Sure he wasn't the only one either. The food was basic and at best bordering on warm. The open dessert bar was lacking stock including plates and silverware."
