In Italy, ristobars are casual, comfortable neighborhood gathering places where friends and family convene to conversate, eat, and drink. In San Francisco, restaurateur and pastry master Gary Rulli’s stateside version of a ristobar is a destination for rustic Italian fare and artisanal pizza, best enjoyed with Italian beer, wine, and good company. Rulli’s Executive Chef Michele Belotti combines the best products and practices of Italy with the bounty of fresh ingredients available in the Bay area.
"I recently had a early evening solo dinner at ristobar. I was quickly seated and a waiter came to my table straight away and offered me the menu and some water and bread. Food was great, not cheap though. I think you can find a better mix between quality and price but this place is a sure pick if you want quality food."

"We were there for the first time prior to attending an event at the Palace of Fine Arts. So close, you could walk it if you are a walker...we arrived before they opened, but they were all present and fine with seating us. Two of us were waiting for our 3rd person, so they were more than willing to get a drink while we were waiting... great experience, will be return! I also accidently left my phone, they had found it and said they would hold on to it. They closed at 10:00, we got out of the event at 10:10, and called just to see if I could still pick it up since I drove up from San Jose area... YES they said no problem - the staff was amazing!!"

"Three of us dined for dinner mid-week prior to 6:00. For the price (and quality), the portions are relatively small compared to restaurants of this type. Two of our diners had veal which was tepid when served and very dry as if it sat waiting for the companion dishes to be ready."

"Chef Michele took us from San Francisco and sent us to Italy with every bite. He know how to pull flavor from each ingredient he prepared for us. My family felt the Italian charm from the staff. I would say that this is one of the best Italian places in San Francisco. Caramento, Todd"

"The food was decent, not great, but good. My server was charming but not very efficient, nor apparently was the bartender who sent out two warm martinis. My big problem was with the hostess, who was downright surly."

"We are always passing by this restaurant since it is right down the street from our apartment. It is always busy and now we know why. The food here was fresh and of high quality. The service was very good and the restaurant itself was comfortable, but still trendy. Overall, we were happy to find a new neighborhood "go to" restaurant for a nice meal."

"Our first 3 appetizers were absolutely delicious and top notch and got us thinking this was a great place. But my main course of scallops was just OK. The bacon kind of fought with the pea puree and scallops, instead of complementing it. The sauce on my husband's pasta main course tasted a lot like Campbell's soup. My wine by the glass was delicious, my husband's had been open a little too long. So we were disappointed after such a great beginning. Everything was either fabulous or disappointing, split pretty much 50/50. What do you say about a restaurant like that? The average between the 2 extremes would make it qualify as at least "Good". If you order the right thing, you'll be blown away."

"When you walk into RistoBar the atmosphere and surroundings create expectations of fine Italian cuisine. So the disappointment is the greater when offerings come to the table. The disappointment about the preparations that come from the kitchen Is heightened on my third visit."

"Tired of the easy gastopub dinner? Then this is your place. From charcuterie and cheese to pastas then desserts, this place does it well and with a fresh Mediterranean flair. Definitely on our list for a repeat, soon."

"I took my Italian husband there for his birthday. Nice selection of Italian wines with a few from California. The salumi & cheese plates were excellent. We shared a huge misto salad. He loved his house made tagliatelle with fennel pork sausage but thought the portion size was small. I had the braised veal stracatto which was a bit bland - could have used a bit more of the reduction sauce. For dessert we had the bignolata with hazelnut gelato. Yummy. Other than the pasta dish, portions were generous. In addition to the salad, we also shared dessert, topped of with cappacino and Grand Marnier."

"The burratta is amazing! Would go back just for that dish. Also tried the octopus appetizer which was overlooked. Friend had the Kobe flat iron steak which looked fantastic. I had the risotto which was just ok. There are a few other items I'd like to go back and try, namely the pizza and the housemade pastas.
Our server was fantastic!!! Very nice and knowledgable of the menu and wines.
The interior is great and open. Noise level was a little high.
Overall, solid spot for reasonably priced dinner with friends that offers a wide menu and wine selection."

"The food was good, but not outstanding. Maybe it was what we ordered. Given the prices, I expected either better flavors or bigger portions. The service, ambiance and location were all outstanding."

"I was disappointed in our meal here, the service was good and the waiter very pleasant. I sent back my fish entree, which I rarely do, because it was dry and tasteless. The waiter had recommended it, as well as this lamb appetizer that they only have on the weekends. We weren't impressed by either. The atmosphere is okay, and the food mediocre. I do not plan on returning."

"Portion a little bit on the small side for a pretty high cost. However, the menu has lots of choice and much of it is tasty. Service was pretty fast and friendly."

"Ristobar was perfect for celebrating special occasions. The food was excellent - the portions were small but suitable for dinner. Not all that many vegetarian options, but everything served was delicious! I will definitely come back for the food and ambience. Parking, however, is extremely hard to find in the area - so come well ahead of time to be able to devote atleast 15-20 minutes in finding a spot."
