Lineage
A farm to table American restaurant with a focus on seafood. Our menus change daily to reflect the best of what the markets have to offer and allows us to feature the work of many local artisans, growers and fishermen. A three course seafood tasting menu is always available. Jeremy and Lisa Sewall created Lineage Restaurant"s concept. We are a married couple with extensive culinary experience and deep New England roots. Located in the heart of Coolidge Corner, Brookline, Massachusetts, the name "Lineage" is based on Jeremy's own. In 1705, when this "Muddy River" hamlet of Boston became incorporated, Samuel Sewall, son of Judge Sewall of Salem Witch Trials fame, lent the community his services as the first Town Clerk and, it is thought, the name of his family's "Brooklin" lands, which lay between the Charles and Muddy Rivers.

"We like Lineage a lot. But it's brunch was not up to their usual. The Bloody Mary was all worcestshire sauce. We changed to Mimosas which were better. The service was very slow. But we had a pleasant Mother's Day."

"The food was very good, but not stand-outs relative to their prices. Lobster tacos are their trademark... Very good, great balance flavor-wise all around. Swordfish and steak entrees were cooked perfectly, the pickled grapes that came with the swordfish was very strong, maybe only needed half of what was on the plate. The chutney-style sauce that came with the steak was amazing! Cheesecake was deconstructed, accompanied with candied kumquat. I'm not a fan of cheesecake, but the candied kumquat had a very strong and sweet flavor (sugar and rosewood water?), which I personally enjoyed. But it's an acquired taste. Decor was very masculine - neutral & gray tones. Bar was jumping, bartenders appeared very active and engaged."

The 2nd time I was with a party of 3- it took a very long time to get a cocktail, & a long time to get our entrees. Our waiter was helpful w/ne selection; he was earnest, but didn't smile enough... then another waitress came. I ordered the pasta made with ricotta & xpected it to have ricotta cheese in it, didn't know it was part of the pasta dough; good, but disappointed as it was not what I expected...would have been nice to have a better explanation- I would have ordered something else. Lobster tacos definitely great, though they are called spicy &eren't. great crème caramel & butterscotch puddi"

"Very gracious host and our overall experience was very good at this restaurant as you can see from our ratings. Keeping in mind that we visited on Tuesday evening, not on a busier night such as Thursday or the weekend.One point: the wine list needs work: it is more limiting than one would anticipate given what the chef is offering on the menu. Not looking for "fancy" or long, but there needs to be somewhat greater depth in both whites and reds. An example that comes to mind is Nicole Bernier's list at Rendezvous in Central Square -- again, the list need not be that long, but some of the Italian, Spanish, French, Austrian wines provide suggestions for an addition or two or three for Lineage."

The only drawback at Lineage is the configuration of tables -- there are very few private spots, or good deuces, and my friend and I sat in the middle of the room -- not my idea of a good table -- so as to not be next to anyone. "The food was a mixed experience The beet salad contained 3 slivers of beet tips and leathery beet greens...totally unacceptable, the salmon was greasy and had a slimy texture and sat on a mushy chop of vegetables, the cheese cake was gelatinous. This was a restaurant week meal and certainly does not invite further visits to this restaurant. Another of our group said the chicken was run of the mill, but certainly acceptable. However, the scallops were the one delicious dish. One out of three is not good enough. A disappointing meal."

"T started with the baby arugula salad with shaved fennel, roasted beets, local blue cheese, and a sweet garlic vinaigrette. For an appetizer I managed to snag the last order of spicy lobster tacos! Their signature appetizer comprised of a mini salty hard taco shell, with chunks of lobster, diced red pepper, onion, a tasty avocado mousse, and a mango salsa. The dish wasn't very spicy, the only bit of mild spice came from the red pepper, but it was probably for the best. The combination of different textures & tastes was perfectly balanced."

"We've liked Jeremy Sewall's food at Eastern Standard and Island Creek Oyster Bar. Lineage is something of a step down in terms of service and quality. Our server seemed rushed most of the evening and somewhat impatient. While the place was busy it was not packed. The pacing of the dishes seemed off, with a very long lag between appetizers and entrees, and then the entrees arriving just as the appetizer plates were cleared. The salads were nice, and the scallops were expertly cooked, but the quinoa on the side was pretty flavorless. The salmon preparation was nothing special. While this evening was okay, it was by no means stellar."

"This was our second time dining at Lineage and it did not disappoint. The food is the real star here. High quality outstanding taste. The staff was attentive and polite. Not crazy about the chairs as they had more of a patio feel, but overall it was wonderful and we will be back. Highly recommend it to impress a date or client."

"The restaurant is very nice inside. Small menu. My waitress auggested the seafood tasting menu which I ordered. The salmon tartar was very small and had no seasoning. My second course of mussels was very good. The thridr course which was described as entree size was a very small piece of cod. It was cooked nicely but needed seasoning and was entree size for a 3 year old. We ordered dessert and I ordered the vanilla buttermilk cake. This was the most dense cake I have ever encountered. It had very little taste and I almost needed a chainsaw to cut through it.
